This is a rebroadcast of an important episode of Bio Alchemy: The Daily Biohacking Podcast from earlier this year that I wanted to re-share with you all. An all-new episode is coming tomorrow. Taking a vow of silence: biohacking the mind and relationships by shutting my mouth. Taking a vow of silence is something that monks and religious figures usually are seen doing, though I decided to take on the challenge by not speaking for 7 days. I was first introduced to the concept of not speaking for long periods of time via my partner Sorelle, who has to date completed two Vipassana silent 10-day meditations. I haven't as yet taken the plunge, though the idea of not speaking for a prolonged period of time had always interested me. Recently in Los Angeles, my friend Sunny gave me some insight into his own Vipassana experience, and I was inspired by him to see what would come out of my own journey of not speaking for a while. So within days, I'd shut my mouth, and decided to keep it closed for an entire week. Although I can't scientifically quantify any data points or quantifiable benefits, I am sharing in this episode some insights into what I learned during my interactions with humans as I took this biohacker's vow of silence, how it's changed me since, and lessons I've taken into my own life. A while ago, I heard a quick online soundbite about how different the food we eat today is nutritionally, when compared to the food our grandparents ate. Although there were no sources, the soundbite suggested that if you ate an orange today, you’d need to eat eight of them to get the same nutrition as an orange your grandmother or grandfather ate. I figured there would be a lot of truth in this. Due to the fact that food today is grown so much faster, and generally picked when not completely ripe, as well as in many cases eaten several weeks after picking, it makes sense that we’re probably not getting as much nutrient value as the food we ate a few generations ago. However, I wanted to know for sure exactly how much less vitamins, minerals, and nutrient value I’m getting today, when compared to a carrot or lettuce that my Oma may have eaten when she was a girl. And so, for my benefit and that of your ears as well, I decided to dig up some stats. In this episode of Bio Alchemy: The Daily Biohacking Podcast, I go into some statistics of how deficient our modern food supply is when compared to a generation or two ago. And trust me, the data ain’t good. You don’t have to be a biohacker to care about the nutrient content in your food. After all, we all eat food, and so we should all care about how nourishing it is to the human body. Despite all the doom-and-gloom you may hear about in this episode, it’s not all bad news. Fortunately, I’m also sharing three simple tactics on how we can all boost the nutrient content of our food for better overall health. I hope you enjoyed this episode. We’ve all heard about juicing for health. But let’s face it, most of the time the health claims around juicing are more often than not seriously inflated. But not in the case of the biohacking juice that I’m talking about in today’s episode. The topic of which, is beetroot juice. I’ve been taking a shot or two of beet juice almost every day for a while now, and sometimes as a pre-workout. It’s all down to the way that beet juice has been shown to scientifically boost our body’s production of nitric oxide, which can massively help our brain, muscles, and lungs perform. For me, it’s usually taken in the morning. The biggest parts of my routine in a day as a biohacker are the things I do in the morning, and beet juice fits in here as a way of getting my brain firing as best it can. But, on today’s episode of Bio Alchemy: The Spiritual Biohacking Podcast, I’m also covering how it may help with our sexual performance. And although boners are one thing it can help guys with, the ladies among us aren’t being left out either. I will admit that some of the information discussed in this episode is purely anecdotal, but at this point there’s so much evidence around beet juice as a biohacking tool, that it’s hard to ignore. Health Lies And Raw Eggs: A Biohacker's View On How Vague Statistics Make Us Live In Fear — #101

Have you ever heard about how you shouldn’t eat raw eggs as they may contain salmonella? Well, that whole health myth may not be as scary as you might think. As a biohacker, I’m always critical when I hear old wive’s tales, or seemingly hearsay about health. I mean, questioning this stuff is one of the fundamental basics of what I do here when creating episodes for Bio Alchemy: The Spiritual Biohacking Podcast. Recently, I posted on Instagram a recipe for a protein smoothie, that I drink most days. Although some of the particulars of the biohack ingredients I put in it change, one thing is almost constant: that I put a raw egg in my smoothie. This prompted a response from one of my followers as to whether I was scared of contracting or dying of salmonella, because of the risk of the bacteria in a raw egg. And although I knew the risk was extremely low, I decided to track down exactly how low, by digging up the statistics of exactly how risky it was. This episode will show you how risky (or not risky) it actually is to eat a raw egg when it comes to salmonella. And the hint is, you’d have to eat raw eggs for a VERY long time, in order to guarantee your death from one. But more importantly, this is another episode that focuses on the fact that you shouldn’t always believe what you hear. Or in fact, you shouldn’t be scared of what you hear, just because you’ve heard it a ton of times. So raw eggs: will I continue to put them in my smoothies as a way to biohack my health? Face-To-Face With The Goddess: Biohacking Consciousness With DMT, The Story Of My Life's Most Impactful Spiritual Experience — #100

And here we are: after 1.5 years of publishing episodes of Bio Alchemy: The Spiritual Biohacking Podcast, we’ve reached 100 episodes! This is a pretty big milestone for me. Although we would have reached the centenary of episodes much sooner id I’d continued to publish at the original pace I wanted to, unfortunately that’s not always the way it happens. But as with all things, everything happens as it should. In this very special episode, I want to share with you all a very special story. And that is, the story of how I biohacked my consciousness with the most profound spiritual experience of my life. And that experience was my first ever meeting with DMT. DMT is something that’s been used by our human ancestral cultures as a spiritual tool for millennia. In fact, although we know it has been used via many plants such as ayahuasca, we don’t know how far back this stretches into human history. The earliest record of human psychedelic use dates back to 12,000 years ago, via rock paintings in my home country of Australia. And my own personal psychedelic use stretches back over 20 years, which definitely isn’t as long. Although I’ve had some transformative experiences in my life as a spiritual biohacker with psilocybin, LSD, and other compounds, nothing could have prepared me with what DMT would show me. Mind blowing is an understatement, and one I’ve tried to express the best I can in this episode. This episode was written as a story. So I could best describe the experience, and how much DMT impacted me the first time it came into my life, I wrote this episode down, and recited it so it would sound the way I needed it to. Although with many of my episodes I’m reciting from memory to sound more organic, I thought this episode needed something more. It needed the accuracy and poetry I feel when I recall this experience in my mind. Biohacking is my passion, but uncovering human spirituality is even moreso. And we’re back! Yeah, yeah, I know my biohacking podcast has been away for a while, though I always knew it’d come back at the right time. Not to sound too much like a hippie, though the Universe always guides us towards the things that we should be doing, and after a bit of a long hiatus, I knew it was time to return. Today, I’m dropping two episodes of Bio Alchemy: The Spiritual Biohacking podcast. Today’s episode is episode 99, where I’m going to be talking about how you can biohack your body’s natural innate immune system using the phenomenal Reishi mushroom - sometimes called, the “Mushroom Of Immortality”. And later today, around an hour after this episode drops, I’ll be sharing with you my 100th episode of the daily biohacking podcast, which is a very special one indeed. Anyway, as I mentioned, today’s episode is all about the reishi mushroom, which has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for thousands of years, and is a tool that modern medical science is starting to back up for its hepatoprotective, immune-modulating, and potentially even cancer-fighting properties. Many of which, I’m going to discuss in this episode. I’ve been taking reishi myself as a biohacker for the best part fo four years (I usually buy my extract from RealMushrooms.com), however recently I started to cultivate my own reishi, and harvested my very first batch only a few days ago. Biohackers and other people alike were so intrigued by the information  I put up on my Instagram story, that I figured it definitely warranted a full episode on the topic. The Spirit Of Celery Juice: Avoiding Biohacking Bullsh*t With Kim Kardashian's Favourite Skin Healing Tonic — #098

Let's face it; there's a ton of junk science and plain nonsense being peddled on the internet when it comes to health advice. Biohackers like myself are guilty of it, the medical establishment is guilty of it, and normal people getting caught up in health fads are guilty of it. In my opinion, one of the most vile and BS-filled fads going around today is the celery juice diet/fast, created by a guy named Anthony William. And I'm going to get straight to the point: according to Mr. William, he receives most of his health information by talking to spirits. I'm not about telling anyone what to do. If you want to talk to spirits, or take information from someone who purports to do that themselves, that's your business. However, it's also my business to uncover the falsehoods and dangerous information being spruiked by people like the "Medical Medium", that are likely going to do nothing when it comes to fixing your health. And in many case, may actually cause you harm. Although the celery juice diet is one of the focal points of this episode, that's not really what this episode is all about. In reality, it's me using it as an example of how people get easily suckered in to diet trends and fad health information, and how easily it is to uncover the deceit, lies, and misinformation around them. It's also about critical thinking, and how you can better prepare yourself to take in information in the current world scene. Whether it's from the media, from podcasts like mine, or from people who get their information from the "Spirit Of Compassion", we all need to learn to think better, do our own research, and know when to call total BS on certain health advice. In this episode, I did mention that I was going to link to a page on Anthony Williams' Medical Medium website, though before publishing I decided against it. Simplifying Autophagy: Your Body's Toxic Waste Disposal System And (Possibly) Ultimate Biohacking Tool For Longevity — #097

Your body is a miraculous machine, capable of self-healing, removing toxicity, and taking care of itself to a level we all have trouble comprehending at times. And when it comes to detoxification, and removing damaged material from our bodies, there's likely no process more important than autophagy. Taken from the Ancient Greek word "autóphagos" which means self-devouring, autophagy is your body's means of removing the junk we all carry around that leads to disease, illness, and a shortening of our lifespan. Despite what some health gurus and detox-tea-peddling companies would have you believe, your body is always detoxifying itself. Autophagy is always happening. However, unfortunately due to our modern habits of carbohydrate-rich diets and eating to excess, we aren't letting it take place as often as we need it to. And unfortunately, as we live in a world that's becoming more toxic through radiation, polluted air, water, and food, we need autophagy more than ever. The good news is that autophagy is free, and it's something you can increase as a process your body undertakes more frequently, and at a deeper level. And fortunately for you, I'm going to touch on it in this episode. As one of the most common questions I get from people on social media is about fasting and why it's good for us, I wanted to create this introduction into autophagy, and why it's the main reason we should be fasting more. However, for you die-hard biohacking aficionados, this episode likely won't be anything new to you - this is very introductory information. Right now, most of are struggling with something we've all come into contact with before, that seems to be on a new level: boredom. Due to the global lockdowns that are currently in place, many of us are quarantined at home, not going to our jobs, not hanging out with friends, going out in public, or even seeing family. And that's given us a seriously increased awareness of how bored it's possible to be, when we're not able to do the things that normally fill up our time. However, could being bored be a good thing? Well according to modern research, it's a definite plus for the health of our mind. Being bored is something that we humans always allowed ourselves to do, though due to modern society stimulating our senses almost without end, many of us have little idea what it's like to be truly bored. But when we're able to harness this state, it's clear that our mind receives an almost automatic biohacking boost. The two main areas it seems where we see benefit from being bored are in terms of creativity, as well as mental health, both of which I'll go into in this episode. Unfortunately though, being bored isn't as easy as you may have thought. According to Sandi Mann, the researcher whose research I'll be referring to in this episode, there is a right way and a wrong way to be bored, if you really want to biohack your headspace with this tactic. Our comfort zone is the thing that stops us doing hard things, and being happy sitting around and doing nothing, when we know we have tasks that need conquering. But do you have any idea how to expand your comfort zone, to make hard things seem easier? I've spent the best part of a decade and a half on my human optimisation practice, trying to upgrade and enhance myself as a human being. It hasn't always been easy, though one thing I can count on, is that real improvement comes from doing those things that aren't easy. Your comfort zone is like a muscle. The more you work that muscle, the stronger it gets, and the more that tasks that once seemed difficult, stressful, or anxiety-inducing, seem much easier than they once did. In this episode, I discuss some of my personal stories and challenges when it has come to overcoming things I'd once put in the "too hard" basket, that became easier with time and practice. And also, a small daily habit that's become a part of my morning routine, that forces me to confront my comfort zone each and every day. I also have a personal challenge for you that you can start now, that will assist you in overcoming small fears, and expanding upon what is currently outside your comfort zone, that you can bring within it. Lessons From Mongolia: How To Survive A Global Crisis, Learning From Nomads, And Reconnecting With Human Nature — #094

Although this isn't a typical biohacking episode, in the grand scheme of things, it's one of the most important things we could do as a species to biohack our health and wellness: get back to living in harmony with nature. Last year, I was lucky enough to spend three weeks on the trip of a lifetime with my good friend (and phenomenal photographer) Max Muench, and his company Follow The Tracks. Mongolia had always been high on my list of places to see since I was a teenager, and this was truly the fulfilment of a bucket list item. I had no idea how transformative the trip would be. Not only because the nature and landscape of Mongolia is fascinating and stunning, but because I was able to spend weeks witnessing the human race truly living in harmony with nature, or at least the closest example I've ever seen of that in my own personal life. I think now is the perfect time to talk about my experiences in Mongolia, as they reflect the current global situation. Whereas many of us are struggling with food, travel, social, and shopping restrictions, the nomads of Mongolia likely have felt very little impact, because they're not reliant on the same systems that we are. 7 Day News Detox: Biohack Your Mental Headspace, Peace, And Creativity With Media Isolation Tactics — #093

I've never been a big fan of the news. For the past decade and a half of my life, I've had a practice in place where I don't watch, consume, to take part in the general world news conversation, which has always allowed me to achieve a certain level of additional positive headspace, creativity, and peace. However, since the whole coronavirus pandemic has started, I haven't been able to escape the news as much as I have previously. And a big part of this came to me as a realisation that despite the fact my news detox worked very effectively in my early 20's, the way we distribute and consume the news now has changed radically in this time. And as my media detox haven't evolved with it, my practice isn't really as effective as it used to me. As I publish this episode, I'm at the end of a seven day news detox, that I started during this time of global panic (or awakening) to get me kickstarted back into removing more and more news from my life. The experiment has so far been profound. I'll let you dive into this episode for all the details, but suffice it to say, I didn't think I could clear up so much mental energy and attain such an increased level of mental freedom, just by detoxing myself from the news for a week. Warrior Of Golden Light: How To Biohack Your Thoughts And Navigate The World As An Impartial Observer — #091

I don't always attain glimpses of profound universal wisdom in my morning meditation. In fact, I don't most of the time. However, this morning I received what I would consider a transmission from the gods and goddesses that I wanted to share in the hope it made sense to some of you. I've been meditating for almost 15 years now, and it's not always smooth sailing. As a biohacker with a very analytical mind, when I was younger I always thought that once you'd been meditating for a few year, you'd become a master at it. For some reason, I pictured people levitating above pillows, though that might have just been the Star Wars nerd in me that was always wishing "The Force" was real. Anyway, from time to time I receive downloads from the cosmos, or whatever you want to call them. Sometimes they're pictures, sometimes they're messages, sometimes feelings. And whenever I notice them (which I don't always do), I'm usually able to see some inspiration in them, or a lesson I need to learn. You'll hear more in this episode, though today's story is in part about the darkness creeping in, and my choice to counteract that with my warrior's golden light that's always with me. And in case you haven't yet figured it out, this is not a traditional biohacking episode. And that counts other podcasts besides my own. I hope you enjoy this conversation with a good friend, Chris Storey. Chris Storey is the founder of Primal Alchemy (http://primalalchemy.co.uk), amongst other titles including biohacker, philosopher, podcaster, ancient wisdom practitioner, and entrepreneur. And although his brand shares a similar name to mine, our organisations aren't officially linked, save for many similar interests and existing in the same industry. Gwyneth Paltrow's Dangerous Advice: How Goop Is Misleading The Public With Damaging Pseudoscientific Nonsense — #090

Gwyneth Paltrow is arguably one of the most famous movie stars on the planet, however, she's not really seen on the screen much these days. Instead, a lot of energy is focused on her company Goop, which has turned into a $250 million information distribution and sales powerhouse. Recently it came to my attention that Paltrow and Goop have just received their own Netflix show, which inspired me to create this episode. I've been critical of what Goop does in the world of health for quite a long time, though for the most part, those views have been kept to myself. In any case, I think I need to share my opinions on the matter, to showcase why I think Goop as a company is dangerous for people's health. Most of Goop's audience seem to be women, and because of this, women have been the target of a lot of the pseudoscientific nonsense that the company peddles, as I'll share with you in this episode. And it does get scary, with women experiencing serious damage to their bodies for following practices endorsed by Goop. The good news is that the company has been fined almost $150,000 USD for their misleading practices, though I'm sure that's not much of a saving grace to the woman who experienced second-degree burns on her vagina by taking part in a practice that has been endorsed by the company. Mostly in this episode, I'm using Gwyneth Paltrow as an example of why you should take the health advice you get seriously, and not just believe everything you hear, read, or consume online. And yes, I mean the information you get from this podcast as well. Yes, I'm a biohacker, and yes, I care about the state of my health, but that doesn't mean I always get everything right, or that I'm creating information dedicated to your unique body and biology. We all need to do better when vetting the information we use to make decisions about our health. There's no doubt that bluetooth earbuds (especially the white ones made by a very popular computer company) are very desirable right now. You only have to go into any gym or walk down any major suburban street to see someone with a set in their ears. But are they at all damaging to our health? There's been a lot of debate over the last few years about whether non-ionising radiation like that which is prevalent in bluetooth and WiFi devices is good for us or not. And with bluetooth earbuds becoming so popular and widely distributed, I thought it was time to tackle this topic again on the podcast. I have spoken about the potential dangers of bluetooth before in a previous episode (linked below), though I was inspired to create another after watching a recent video on YouTube where the VTudio channel compared the radiation being emitted from a microwave oven, and compared it to the latest "Pro" model of white bluetooth earbuds. And although this wasn't a very scientific test, the results were no less scary. They showed that a set of bluetooth earbuds may be frying your brain from the inside, with more than double the non-ionising radiation emitted when compared to putting your head right next to a microwave when cooking something on high. There's evidence on both sides of the table when it comes to stating whether bluetooth is safe or not, which for me shows that we should be making even more of an effort to discuss this health-related grey area. This ruffled more than a few feathers as it kinds goes against what the common collective wisdom says about how much we need to work in order to be productive members of society and earn a fulltime income, though as you'll hear in this episode, there's a lot of evidence that points to a shorter workweek that'll make us happier, healthier, and more productive human beings. In this episode, I go into some detail about Marin's plans for Finland's economy and workforce, as well as jumping to the other side of the planet to delve a little into another polarising work culture in Japan, and what that nation has done in terms of testing a shorter workweek for its citizens. You'll also hear about Japan's culture of "karoshi", which is the phenomenon where thousands of people are literally dropping dead at their jobs each year, and why Japanese people are pushed so hard to the point of exhaustion. I Stopped Speaking For 7 Days: Biohacking Consciousness And Relationships During A Vow Of Silence — #087

Taking a vow of silence is something that monks and religious figures usually are seen doing, though I decided to take on the challenge by not speaking for 7 days. This isn't something I've ever seen a biohacker do or speak about, which made me all the more excited to take up the challenge, and share it with all of you. I was first introduced to the concept of not speaking for long periods of time via my partner Sorelle, who has to date completed two Vipassana silent 10-day meditations. I haven't as yet taken the plunge, though the idea of not speaking for a prolonged period of time had always interested me. Doing Vipassana is definitely in my future, and hopefully something I put into my calendar for the year 2020. Recently in Los Angeles, my friend Sunny gave me some insight into his own Vipassana experience, and I was inspired by him to see what would come out of my own journey of not speaking for a while. So within days, I'd shut my mouth, and decided to keep it closed for an entire week. Although I can't scientifically quantify any data points or quantifiable benefits, I am sharing in this episode some insights into what I learned during my interactions with humans as I took this biohacker's vow of silence, how it's changed me since, and lessons I've taken into my own life. Do I recommend you take your own vow of silence? Due to a lot of people messaging about this subject, this episode is a rebroadcast of one of the first episodes of the Bio Alchemy podcast. Almost completely a carnivore in his dietary observations, Bryan discusses how this lifestyle changed his gut health, fixed his joint pain, and changed his overall energy levels. 100% Meat Diet: The Record-Breaking Carnivore King On Why Meat Heals, Biohacking Autoimmunity, And Food Quality — Dr Shawn Baker | #075

Dr Shawn Baker is a medical doctor, orthopaedic surgeon, former soldier, athlete, and world-record holder, Dr Baker is known to many online as the carnivore king, as he's one of the world's leading proponents of the carnivore diet. In case you weren't aware, the carnivore diet is exactly as it sounds, where people who hold this dietary observation eat almost exclusively meat, and basically nothing else. The carnivore diet is gaining a lot of popularity of late, with a ton of people turning to it for a variety of reasons, though where it's seemed to have the most success is as a potential treatment for a host of autoimmune conditions. But it's also generating a lot of discussion online, as well as criticism, from those who don't believe it can be a completely healthy choice. In this episode, we discuss why Dr Baker turned to the carnivore diet and what were the major benefits he saw from it, what the current research is saying about being 100% carnivore and why many other people are turning to it, some information that suggests red meat can potentially prevent ageing, what some of the potential adverse side-effects could be, the ethics of being a carnivore and what kinds of meats would be preferable, the potential hazards of low-quality commercial-grade meat, the potential dangers of amyloids in industrially-raised meat, why high cholesterol can actually be beneficial in older people, some of Dr Baker's own health and performance routines that have helped him break world records after the age of 50, and much more. As I mentioned in yesterday's solo episode, I don't necessarily agree with the carnivore diet in many ways for my own health, though that doesn't mean there aren't people like Dr Baker in this episode who are much more informed than I am on the topic, and who have research to back up why it can be effective in many cases, or why it seems to work extremely well for many people. I do personally eat meat, though meat and other intake of animal products for me is only around 20%-30% of my diet, so I'm a far cry from being a total carnivore, but I'm also a far cry from being a vegan. But again, I will say that to many people listening, this episode will be somewhat controversial. However, regardless of whether you agree with Dr Baker or not, I'd only ask you to treat his knowledge and experience with as much respect as you'd treat that of any other human. If you disagree, like I do with certain parts of the carnivore diet, that's fine. As I've said many times on this podcast, not every lifestyle choice is for everyone, and everyone is free to do their own research, and make up their own mind. The Ethics Of Meat: Animal Products In A Biohacking Diet, Health Concerns, And Why Veganism Doesn't Equal Innocence — #074

Meat: should we eat it? I do eat meat. And while I'm lucky enough to be in the position to afford the absolute best quality animal products from creatures that have lived natural, healthy, stress-free lives, that doesn't mean I haven't questioned my desires to take myself out of the chain of death, regardless of how long killing animals has been a part of human existence. I've been asked  the question many times about my consumption of meat for both ethical and health reasons, but it's the ethics part that's playing the biggest role in this episode. In advance, this episode of the podcast isn't like any other that's come before, as it's not necessarily only about biohacking your health when it comes to food. And while diet obviously plays a big part in human health, the simple fact is that this is also getting muddied by the fact that there are now ethical concerns when it comes to the consumption of eating animals. And not only just killing animals for food that have lived natural lives, but the fact that many people believe killing in any regard is unethical, and shouldn't be a part of humanity's food system at all. Regardless of what dietary observation you hold, chances are you're likely not going to agree with something I say in this episode. A part of that may be because I think we're all guilty of death and destruction to a certain degree (and yes, that means you too vegans), but also maybe because I raise some points in this episode that may be confronting to you. Or maybe, it's just because you think I have my facts wrong. All of these reasons are fine, and we don't have to agree. I may very well be wrong, as I don't profess to have all the answers. But in saying that, I thought it was time for me to bring this issue up, based on my current beliefs, understanding, as well as my desire to let it be known that whatever you observe when it comes to the way you eat, in the end it's your choice. Learning is awesome, but learning fast is better. And let's face it, if we can all take shortcuts to allowing our brain to take in more information, and retain that information better, I'm sure we'll all say yes to that. The brain is arguably the most important organ we have. Victor Mifsud calls himself the Blind Biohacker, and is my guest on today's episode of the Bio Alchemy podcast. Victor is legally blind, and at one point in his life was told that he was going to lose his sight completely by the age of 30. However, he didn't accept that diagnosis, and through the power of citizen science and his own research, he sought out non-mainstream alternative therapies to heal his eyesight. Not only did his vision not degenerate further, but now at the age of 40, he's regained over 30% of his vision, by learning how to biohack his biology. Victor also suffered from learning issues from a young age, which he learned to conquer through the emerging science of neuroplasticity — basically, learning how to remap and change the brain, to make it work better than it ever has before. Neuroplasticity is also the focus of Victor's documentary "My Neuroplastic Adventure", where he records his journey of improving his learning skills, as well as bringing himself back from the brink of total blindness, through the power of biohacking and alternative healing practices.
