Weekly Shoutout: Cruznotes is back! One email a month to bring you everything happening across the cruzfolio network, join Jaime's secret newsletter here: cruzfolio.com/cruznotes. -- Hi there, Today I am so excited to be arts calling author Lee Upton! (www.leeupton.com) About our guest: Lee Upton's comic novel Tabitha, Get Up is forthcoming in May 2024. Another novel, a literary mystery, will be out in May 2025. Her books include her seventh collection of poetry, The Day Every Day Is (Saturnalia Books 2023), two short story collections, a novella, four books of literary criticism, and an essay collection. Her poetry has appeared in The New Yorker, Poetry, and Southern Review, as well as three editions of Best American Poetry. She is the recipient of the Pushcart Prize, the National Poetry Series Award, Poetry Society of America awards, the Miami University Novella Prize, the Open Book Award, the Saturnalia Book Prize, and other honors. www.leeupton.com Thanks for this wonderful conversation, Lee! All the best! -- TABITHA, GET UP is forthcoming May 22nd, 2024 from Sagging Meniscus Press, is now available for pre-order: https://bookshop.org/p/books/tabitha-get-up-lee-upton/21257767 ABOUT TABITHA, GET UP: Tabitha is a lonely fifty-year-old biographer who, in order to restore her self-respect and pay her rent, attempts to write two biographies simultaneously: one about an actor so famous his face is on the side of buses, and the other about a popular writer of children's books recently outed as an author of erotic fiction. Is Tabitha ready to deal with interviewing an actor so handsome and charismatic she thinks he should be bottled and sprayed on belligerent people as a form of crowd control? Can she form a genuine friendship with a cult novelist who pressures her to compromise her values? While facing these and other challenges, Tabitha is bedeviled by memories of her long-ago divorce and the terrible wedding when, accidentally bumped on a balcony, she shot off into the shrubbery. Is it true, she wonders, that there's probably a dead body beneath the floating rot of any marriage? When surrounded by pretentious beautiful people does it help to imagine their intestines are full of worms? Are champagne bubbles the devil's air pockets? Is it ever too late to change your life—from the bottom up? NOTICES: “For starters, Lee Upton's novel Tabitha, Get Up is funny—really, really funny. On top of that, narrator Tabitha's clumsy, desperate, charming search for human connection—not to mention a paying gig—is also a serious look at whether it's possible to bluff and hustle a life together. You're going to love this book.” —David Ebenbach, author of The Guy We Didn't Invite to the Orgy “Tabitha, Get Up is another remarkable book by the irrepressible Lee Upton, a novel that might remind you of the work of some of our finest living comic novelists—Elizabeth McCracken, Jincy Willett, Elizabeth McKenzie—but in the end is a book only Upton herself could have written. Its protagonist, Tabitha, is a glorious piece of work: a biographer with a feverish mind and a long list of antagonists and an indomitable spirit and an unforgettable voice and major money problems. I wouldn't want anyone to live her life, but I very much want everyone to read her book. It's Lee Upton's best, funniest, and most ingenious work of fiction yet. Which is to say, it's the best, funniest, most ingenious work of fiction you'll read this year, and most other years, too.” —Brock Clarke, author of Who Are You, Calvin Bledsoe? and I, Grape “There is no form of the novel. The novel has no form. The novel takes no form. The novel takes forms. It is a voracious form, the novel. Tabitha, Get Up, Lee Upton's comely new novel, presents as a series of exquisite “Notes,” and thus a “Notebook,” a book of Notes, to self, to random others, to you who finds them. A compendium of memorandums makes up the meat of the matter, a tender texture to the text, marginalia that has been turned outside in, has migrated edgily into the heart of the heart. Formally the form is perfectly organic to this novel new novel, parts being greater than the sum of the whole, this map more detailed than the thing it represents, this round-up of resuscitation, reconstitution, and reply. Riding herd, Upton wrangles a novel that writes itself and rights itself. —Michael Martone, author of Plain Air: Sketches from Winesburg, Indiana “Tabitha lives! In Tabitha, Get Up, Lee Upton has created an ebullient, witty, slightly nutty, and totally lovable character whose distinctive voice will stay with you long after you've closed the book. Smart, funny, crazy in the best sense, and a total joy!” —Iris Smyles, author of Droll Tales Arts Calling is produced by Jaime Alejandro (cruzfolio.com). https://www.catbohannon.com/ The talking points alone are enough to make you go hmmmm. She's insightful, intelligent and makes compelling points that science should listen to. We kept it more on the science end of the interview focusing on subjects you probably never thought about, but below are some of the talking points she includes in her book. Women outlive men because female bodies are just better at *not dying.* And with few exceptions, that's true from birth forward—even boys get more cancer than girls, and are more likely to die from it when they do—but this is especially true during our reproductive years. And that gap is only going to get bigger: 80 percent of the world's centenarians are female. We probably evolved to be sexist. But we don't have to keep doing it. From an evolutionary perspective, sexism and gynecology are two sides of the same coin: they're both ways we use behavior to innovate around our species' terrible reproductive system. (When you don't have the Pill or condoms, having strict social rules that restrict access to female bodies can usefully limit how many times a woman will be pregnant.) But gynecology has vastly outpaced sexism in this regard. Now that we can mostly deal with our glitchy, complication-prone reproductive systems, we can finally choose not to be sexist—which is good, because sexism is actually starting to kill us. Breastfeeding babies talk to their mothers through their nipples. Or rather, their bodies talk to our bodies in an ancient language: because of the physics of nursing at the breast, babies' spit is literally sucked into the mother's breast through the nipple in a kind of undertow, wherein it's “observed” by immuno-agents lining the mother's milk ducts. (Formally, this is called “upsuck.”) Sick babies get different breastmilk than healthy ones. So do stressed babies—mom's breast “reads” the cortisol in the babies' spit and adjusts the composition of the milk accordingly. Human penises are terribly boring. So, too, our testicles. And it's probably because men didn't compete for mates as much as other apes, and also because we didn't rape each other very much in our evolutionary past—species prone to rape tend to have whiz-bang penises and complicated vaginas to match, like the mallard duck's corkscrew contraption, or the dolphin's J-shaped prehensile phallus, which can literally swivel and whack a female until she submits. Female bodies probably led the way to bipedalism. The female musculoskeletal system is geared towards endurance, while the male's is a bit closer to the older (chimp-like) model. So male bodies are usually better at explosive strength, and female ones better at enduring. That's true all the way down to female muscle cells' metabolism. And the thing about walking upright is you need endurance. Shame about our lower backs and knees, though… female sex hormones also make us more flexible, which is great for yoga and pregnancy, but absolutely terrible for long-term wear and tear on the joints.

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Simple Kelly betting in prediction markets, published by jessicata on March 7, 2024 on LessWrong. Kelly betting is a strategy for gambling, maximizing one's log(money) every round, by betting a fixed fraction of one's income. I will define Kelly betting a certain class of discrete prediction markets, give a simple Kelly betting rule for these prediction markets, and show it equivalent to the original Kelly formula in a two-outcome case. A prediction market consists of a finite set of outcomes O, and a probability measure Q(O) on these outcomes. Participants may buy, for some outcome o, a contract that pays out $1 if o comes true, for a price of $Q(o). This assumes no transaction fees. Suppose you have m money. You are going to spend all your money on these contracts, with R being a probability measure over O, and R(o) being the portion of money you spend on each type of contract. Note that you can buy some of each contract as an equivalent to holding on to money (e.g. to "hold on" to $2, buy 2 copies of each contract o, costing $2 in total; these contracts combined will always pay out $2). This means it's fine to assume that spending all your money on contracts doesn't compromise optimality. If your subjective probabilities of the outcomes are defined by a probability measure P(O), what is the optimal R(O) that maximizes your log-money at the end of this round? Your money conditional on outcome o is mR(o)/Q(o), since you are spending mR(o) on contracts costing Q(o) each. Therefore your expected log-money is: f(R):=oOP(o)logmR(o)Q(o)=oOP(o)(logm+logR(o)logQ(o)) Note that the log m and log Q(o) terms do not depend on R. We can therefore ignore these terms when taking the partial derivatives with respect to each R(o): f(R)R(o)=(P(o)logR(o))R(o)=P(o)R(o) If any of these partial derivatives are greater than any other, then expected log-money can be increased by moving a small amount of money from the outcome with the lower partial derivative to the one with the higher partial derivative (since f is continuous). Therefore, at the maximum of f, these partial derivatives all equal some constant c, i.e., P(o)/R(o)=c for some c. (Formally proving this might require some additional work, using the fact that f is concave and R(o) has to be positive whenever P(o) is positive; I'll omit this for brevity.) Equivalently, R(o)=P(o)/c. But this must imply c = 1, since R and P are both probability measures; any other c value would result in R not summing to 1. This implies R = P. What this means is that the optimal Kelly betting strategy involves spending a P(o) portion of your money on contracts paying out conditional on each outcome o. Interestingly, this is entirely independent of Q. This can also be seen by noticing that Q only contributes to additive terms in f that do not depend on R, such that the gradient does not depend on Q. Is this equivalent to the original Kelly rule in a two-outcome case? This rule is given by: f=p1pb where f* is the optimal portion of your money to bet, p is the probability of a win, and b is the ratio between how much is gained on a win versus how much is lost on a loss (e.g. on a triple-or-nothing coin toss, b = 2, because twice as much is gained on a win than is lost on a loss). We can set O = {w, l} (w is win, l is loss) and determine Q as a function of b. Specifically, we set Q(w)=1b+1 Q(l)=11b+1=bb+1 These are the implied house odds for b. If you spend x money on contracts paying out conditional on w, these contracts pay out x(b+1), corresponding to a net gain of xb money, whereas if you lose you simply lose x money; this therefore adequately translates b to a prediction market. Our rule says to spend a P(w) = p portion of your money on w contracts, and a 1-p portion of your money on l contracts. Suppose your starting money is m. If you win, your e...

Formally known as Eliyya Lane whom we welcomed initially to the show in 2021 we were rejoined this week by Hey Sereena as she's now known on episode 193! Sereena had a cool discussion with us this week about what she's been up to both in life and musically over the past few years. Primarily what led her to change her moniker and the different styles of music she's now creating and playing as an artist, producer and DJ. When talking about DJing she describes what it's like to work with a wide array of different clients all of whom are looking for a different set list to be created for their event or show. This is something she's worked hard at to be able to find each person's specific needs and curate the right songs for every occasion she's involved in. She's also planning to release more music of her own this year and collaborate with other individuals as a way to keep things fresh and exciting. We thank Sereena for reconnecting with us this week and can't wait to welcome her back again soon! Consider becoming a monthly supporter of the show by visiting the link here

This week, the ladies sit down with Noelle Giddings, an immensely talented artist whose tremendous career has taken her from being one of the first female comic book artists to Beth's go-to artist for creating bespoke, set-specific 'cleared' art of the highest quality. The Interview with Noelle begins at Time Code: 6:36. GUEST BIO: NOELLE GIDDINGS Noelle Giddings, creator, painter and illustrator, creates set-specific, original though highly evocative, 'cleared' art for television and film. She has enjoyed a long relationship with CBS, creating most of the art needed for standing sets as well as an episode-by-episode basis for shows such as The Good Wife, Braindead, Instinct, Main Justice, and The Good Fight. Other networks include FX and the upcoming Y The Last Man, and the film Danielle Isn't Real. Formally trained at The Parsons School of Design (holding an MFA), Noelle combines sophisticated technique and craft with a broad visual literacy and vocabulary. This unusual versatility enables her to infuse each piece with the aesthetic sensibility of any period, movement, or school--from the Old Masters to Contemporary Art. Additionally, Noelle, one of the early (and few) female comic book artists, has over twenty years experience working for Dark Horse, Marvel, and mostly DC Comics (pencils, inks, color, and covers) with hundreds of credits--among them: Batman, Superman, Aquaman, etc. A particularly proud part of her comic book history was helping to start Milestone Media, a lone company dedicated to producing multicultural comics, where as Color Editor she designed and colored the universe known as Dakota. Noelle is also an accomplished animator having worked on the Nickelodeon series, Doug, as well as the Disney movie, Anna Karenina. Noelle has taught art at The Cooper Hewitt International Design Museum as well as at The Children's Museum of the East End. Noelle's actively works on projects ranging from Wake Board Design to Wine Labels, and has commissioned artwork in many private collections. She has had paintings shown in the juried art show, Woman Painting Woman (2014 and 2017) at the RJD Gallery in Bridgehamtpon NY, near where she currently, and happily, resides. We change it up this time and rename an episode...Bird Dog...in honor of both the drink of choice for Bry and that Google says it's a name common to refer to people from south of the Mason Dixon line...and since no one knows where that is, but it is legend that it originally ran where Highway 2 is. We go from pee break to pee break and if you turn up the volume to max, you can hear Frank's birdlike bladder fill. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Further, Baker-Brown has been a part of the brand for over three decades.
