Today we look at the fascinating medical treatment that is red light therapy. I speak Bryan Gohl founder of Red Light Rising a company specialising in Red light therapy. What is red light therapy and what conditions can it be used to treat. Find out how red light therapy affects the mitochondria in the cell and why this is signifcant. Anti-ageing : A 2013 study in the Journal of Cosmetic and Laser Therapy demonstrated that RLT improved skin complexion and texture, reducing wrinkles in participants after several weeks of treatment . Muscle recovery : A 2016 study published in American Journal of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation showed that RLT helped reduce muscle fatigue and improved muscle recovery in athletes after exercise. James Strong is a former rugby player having represented Wales at age group levels plus on the IRB 7s circuit. He played for 8 years at London Welsh and 4 years at Rosslyn Park semi professionally. Alongside rugby, he qualified as an accountant while working in financial services and completed a full time MBA at Cass Business School in 2010. After rugby he got into endurance sports such as triathlons but soon after started to suffer with his recovery and even his focus. He started to seek out ways to help with this and one of the things he found was light therapy. Off the back of this and the amazing results he achieved in 2017, he founded Red Light Rising as a passion project. Since then the company has grown significantly, with players in 3 of the 6 Nations teams using their lights, plus world champion heavy weight boxers, F1 drivers, Olympic athletes and many more. In this conversation we dive pretty deep into a discussion on health and various ways you can improve and optimise it. One of the key components is sleep and James goes into depth on the affect of different types of light has on us and our sleep patterns. His company aims to offer solutions to some of the challenges faced in the modern world with exposure to blue light through with our use of technology among other things with blue light blocking glasses. These glasses along with red light therapy devices offers modern ways to help us replicate our ancient connection to the natural cycles called our circadian rhythm. We also discuss some healthy hacks and things you can do around the home to create your own 'biohacking house' as James has successfully done after taking on a renovation project to create his new family home in the midlands. Bryan Gohl is a bio hacker, founder of Heavy and co founder of Red Light Rising. Bryan has a real passion for wellness and he loves to talk about it! Red light therapy has been extensively studied and the benefits are well documented with the use of red-light therapy continuing to gain in popularity as its benefits are communicated more widely. James and Angela discuss how red light and near red light works on our bodies at a cellular level and the extensive benefits of consistently using a red light as a part of your regular routine to aid your body. Red light can enhance testosterone production if used consistently and for females there are enhanced benefits for fertility. Sleep – latency and deep sleep can be improved through the use of red light and good light hygiene. The enhanced cellular energy and collagen synthesis fibroblast formation as a result of red-light usage enhance the body recovery protocol. This week's guest is Bryan Gohl. Bryan is a biohacker, avid self-experimenter, wellness expert, yoga teacher, and health coach. He has been interested in health, wellness and exercise for many years. His father first taught him to do push ups and sit ups when he was about 5 years old. A few years after that he began making his own dumbbells out of garden posts and broken bricks. When he turned 15 he was finally allowed to join his local gym and began hitting the weights with fierce commitment! After nearly 12 years of exploring wellness and exercise in all its forms, he settled into vegetarianism for 7 years under the impression that it was indeed the healthiest way to eat. It has increased in size and reach, and turning a lot of heads in lots of industries because it’s quantifiable. Biohacking is about using your common sense of going, ‘Here’s the stuff I’m doing and here’s how I feel and here’s the data that backs it up,’ and saying, ‘Well, actually, what other areas should I test subjectively? And then see what I can quantify through data?’ Grounding or connecting with the earth is apparently a great antioxidant and good for sleep. Red light therapy is brilliant for healing. Metabolomics is the future health care. It’s looking at the body at the cellular level and seeing what your cells are deficient of. Hydration, sleep, and sunlight are really the three key things to health optimisation, plus metabolic flexibility. Action Steps: Get to the basics of optimising your health. Look at your genetics and see if there’s anything in the MTHFR specifically that needs optimising. Make sure that your hydration is correct. Have the proper mineralised water and the right minerals. Make sure your nutrition is correct. Eat organic, naturally-grown foods. Optimise your sleep by making sure that your light exposure is correct. Get natural light during the day and minimise blue light exposure by wearing blue light blocking glasses in the evening Take responsibility for your own health. Focus on the basics before you even think about buying any new technology. Personalise your diet. It’s very closely linked to what we often refer to as ancestral lifestyle practices. Red light therapy is the intersection of science and technology that actually mimics nature. It’s mimicking some of the healthiest types of light that come from the sun. Red and infrared lights cause an increase in energy production on a cellular level. When the cells of the body are stimulated by red and infrared lights, there is also an increase in anti-inflammatory enzymes that get released into the blood. As science moves on and studies what’s happening in terms of red light therapy, they have been able to narrow it down to very specific wavelengths that are represented by numbers. And LED is important because they can be programmed by computers to be exactly on target with those numbers. Infrared light penetrates the body up to a depth of about 5 cm. Red light has been shown to increase energy production in the Leydig cells in the testicles, which are the cells that produce sperm. Action Steps: Give red light therapy a try. Bryan said: “What’s really exciting is that science is really starting to kind of inform us that light is so important.
