On this episode of Anti-Aging Hacks, I discuss all about self quantification with Bob Troia. We talk about: 1. How Bob got into measuring everything about his body that he could? 2. How can someone dip their toes into measuring their own body? 3. How to measure your sleep, Vitamin D levels, Blood Glucose, basic Blood Levels, and more...   01:30: What got Bob to start into this journey of self-quantification? -Dr. Bob was an athlete in high school. -Learning about yourself was the main motivation for him. -He didn't go through every statistic. -The key is to work constantly, and progress will come. -You can start very simple with some basic tools. -People's biggest mistake is that they are buying too many devices and tools and they are trying to track every lab testing. 06:17: How does your life change? -He started to learn  what is "under the hood" exploring and  combining data with some lab testing. -You are starting to understand what is going on with your body.   09:19: How much of basic quantification that most people do is automated? -"It just depends on how extreme you want to go." -Bob still has 25 years old tracking data notebooks. -You can start tracking your data with a spreadsheet. -People are still doing better quantification than any software.   14:01: What is the basic stuff that people can start tracking/measuring/biohacking for a good impact on health? *Evaluating your sleep (Avoid sleeping devices) -Go to sleep at the same time every day. -Measure the time when you go to sleep and when you wake up. -Start tracking blood sugar. *Glucose meters ($30) *Grip strength (Hand dynamometer) -Measure biological age vs chronological age (Biomarkers testing...) -You can't have a single chronological age (Your skin chronological age is maybe older than your body chronological age) *Basic lab testing 22:37: Tips for falling asleep easier? -We need to optimize our sleeping environment. *Avoiding blue light -Bob loves to be in a cold dark environment before falling asleep. *Cooling down bed in summer months *Breathing only on nose -It matters to have a routine before bed. *Inclined bed therapy 31:35: Have you done OGTT? (Oral Glucose Tolerance Test)  "Yeah, basically, I did it on my own." *FreeStyle Libre -It goes in the back of your arm. -Collects data every 15 minutes for 2 weeks. -FreeStyle Libre is great because it measures blood sugar levels while you are sleeping. -Some people have sugar escalations while sleeping. -Different types of foods and combinations have a different impact on your blood sugar spike.   40:45 What other blood tests do you do on a regular basis? -Start looking at basic panels. -Look at your vitamin D levels, Testosterone, and Cholesterol. "There is a rabbit hole on rabbit holes "   45:21 How Important is vitamin D, and how we can get some more of it? It is very important. -Worse COVID patients are having a problem with vitamin D. -Most people take less vitamin D than the lowest limits. -The modern lifestyle is guilty of it. *App "dminder" (Calculates how much vitamin D you are taking on everyday basis) 52:04 What is the balance between overexposing to the sun and perfect exposure to the sun for ideal vitamin D dose? -A tip is to expose yourself to the sun in the morning and evening. -Don't go out at noon when the UW index is 11. *Vitamin C *PABA Supplement (Has B vitamin)   56:36: Do you do anything for your skin? (Applying creams...) -Dr. Bob uses coconut oil, vitamin c serum... -He tries to avoid putting many things on his skin. -It matters to hydrate your skin 58:56 Do you work with individuals as a consultant? Dr. Bob is now co-founder of a company "awesome labs". https://www.quantifiedbob.com/ Instagram, Twitter, Facebook: @quantifiedbob LinkedIn: Bob Troia

How can we recover more effectively? In Part 2 of my interview with Bob Troia, we talk more about recovery strategies and what they entail, and the usefulness of heart rate variability as a measurement of nervous system recovery. Visit https://www.bodyshotperformance.com/topic/podcasts/ for the complete show notes of every podcast episode. Topics Discussed in this Episode: Nervous system recovery Using light therapy, percussion therapy, and NormaTec compression boots for recovery The benefits of infrared sauna and cold exposure Breathwork and heart rate variability Key Takeaways: Cold temperature, in general, has great anti-inflammatory properties for the body, so doing cold exposure knocks down inflammation. But also, it’s training your body to stay calm under stressful conditions. Breathing intentionally is very powerful for positively changing your physiology. There’s breathwork you can do to reset your sympathetic/parasympathetic response. Action Steps: Submit your body to cold exposure. Try to maintain day to day slow, steady breathing through your nose. Bob said: “When we say nervous system recovery… a lot of it is about how do we get the body back.” “There’s been a lot of research around this concept of heat shock proteins… or the idea that you train and then exposing the body to the heat… So I think if you’re trying to increase muscle growth and all that… it’s said to have benefit for that.” Thanks for listening! How can we overcome stressors in our daily life? Bob Troia is back on the show to talk more about training and how to handle things such as travel and jetlag. Find out what strategies you can implement and more! Visit https://www.bodyshotperformance.com/topic/podcasts/ for the complete show notes of every podcast episode. Topics Discussed in this Episode: What recovery means How we get microtrauma How to handle travel, jetlag, and EMF exposure The molecular hydrogen and why it’s good for you Amino acids for training and workouts The minimal effective dose for training and for exercise What hacks you can do to get the most out of your training in a limited amount of time Key Takeaways: Recovery is getting your body back to where it should be. Molecular hydrogen has really great systemic effects in the body. When we work out, we cause a degree of inflammation in the muscles. If we take antioxidants close to that exercise session, we might blunt the hormetic response of exercise. However, molecular hydrogen is a selective antioxidant, which makes it really great after a workout. Action Steps: Take molecular hydrogen to combat stressors when you’re traveling or when you’re working out. Get your circadian rhythm in check. Take amino acids pre and post workout. Bob said: “With air travel, it’s just about trying to mitigate whatever it’s throwing at [you].” “You don’t have to be on a treadmill for an hour a day, 6 days a week. You just go in there and you knock it out.” Thanks for listening! Tim Gray is a biohacker, avid self-experimenter, and founder of the Health Optimisation Summit, as well as one of the most well-known biohackers that inhabits this ball of rock hurtling through the cosmos we all call home. Tim has spent years testing, evaluating, and measuring thousands of biohacking techniques to improve health, cognition, and overall wellness, and now spends a great deal of his life sharing that information with the world. Tim's journey into biohacking started from a range of health problems that he decided to take into his own hands and overcome, when a lot of traditional healing avenues seemed to not offer him much help. Many of these issues Tim believes stemmed from mercury poisoning, which is something he will go into some detail into this episode. And after having also discovered the powerful benefits of hyperbaric oxygen therapy, Tim opened up his own clinic in London where people can bring the benefits of this technology into their own lives. And if you've never heard of how this technology can aid in overall health and recovery, prepare to have your eyes opened. In this episode, we talk about how Tim defines biohacking, how mercury poisoning lead him to take control of his own health, how you may be contaminated by mercury and other heavy metals from things like fillings in your teeth as well as fish, why farmed fish is so damaging to human health, how you could potentially have mercury poisoning even if your parents had fillings that contained this metal, what hyperbaric oxygen therapy is and the results Tim has had with it over the years, the most important metrics Tim tracks about his biology and why he no longer tracks as much as he did, some of the weirdest biohacks Tim has subjected himself to, the most important biohacks Tim recommends everyone should focus on, and much more. As I mentioned, Tim is the founder of the Health Optimisation Summit that's coming up in London this September, so if you can make it or are in the area, I suggest you check it out. There will be some of the biggest biohackers in the world speaking including the father of biohacking Dave Asprey, as well as many others including a personal favourite of mine and previous podcast guest Bob Troia (otherwise known as Quantified Bob), so you should come along if you're able. I'm almost also certain to make it as long as my schedule permits, and I'd love to see some of your faces there if you can make it as well. What is self-quantification? How does it differ from biohacking, and how can we use it to optimise our health? Quantified Bob talks all about the value of getting our data and using that information to optimise all aspects of our life. Visit https://www.bodyshotperformance.com/podcasts-blog for the complete show notes of every podcast episode. Topics Discussed in this Episode: Self-quantification versus biohacking Bob’s journey of digging deeper into his own physiology What data to track and measure Tracking your glucose and the benefits of using a blood glucose monitor Personalised diet and nutrition Some things you need to be aware of when getting a gut test Fasting: Should you do it or not? The different types of fasting Some of the things that can have the biggest impact on health-conscious individuals that are strapped for time Key Takeaways: Self-quantification is using technology and data to gain better insights into ourselves and creating actionable steps from that information to optimise your health and well-being. There’s a bit of an overlap between self-quantification and biohacking but they’re not the same. There are people who are tracking aspects of their lives that are not necessarily about their body, whereas there are a lot of biohackers who are trying a hundred different things to optimise their body’s health. Studies have shown people’s personalised glycemic response to different foods. Fasting allows your digestive system to get a break for a few days and allows you to get a metabolic reset. Action Steps: Observe how your body reacts to different foods. Try to keep your glucose in a tight range and avoid big fluctuations. Get a DNA test and/or a gut test. If you’re going to fast, do it during the work week when you’re busy and have no time to think about food. Optimise your sleep space and your home environment. Bob said: “What you see in the data doesn’t necessarily always mean things that are being expressed in your genes [are] also genetic factors. For me, it could be largely tied to [environmental] stress.” “You need to be measuring some things that are actually happening in your life… Just because your genes say one thing, it doesn’t necessarily mean that things are always expressed.” Thanks for listening!
