Welcome to Extra Nos Academy. The phrase Extra Nos is a Latin phrase that means, "outside of us." This podcast will function as an outlet for unpacking ancient Christianity as preserved through Lutheran thought. I will address matters of culture, scriptur
The Extra Nos Academy podcast, hosted by Flame, is a hidden gem for those seeking solid theology and a powerful presentation of Biblical truth. As a longtime listener of Flame's music for over a decade, I was thrilled to discover that he had ventured into the world of podcasting. And let me tell you, he does not disappoint! This podcast is truly awe-inspiring and I cannot recommend it enough to my fellow listeners.
One of the best aspects of The Extra Nos Academy podcast is the way Flame challenges his audience to examine their preconceived ideas and confront them with Scripture. In a world filled with theological arguments that often turn into yelling matches or disrespectful exchanges, Flame stands out as a breath of fresh air. He encourages his listeners to dig deeper and engage in thoughtful discussions rather than resorting to confrontation. His approach is both thought-provoking and enlightening, providing us with new perspectives on familiar topics.
Another great aspect of this podcast is Flame's ability to disagree with certain assumptions commonly held within American Christianity without disrespecting or belittling those who hold different views. He models genuine respect and love towards others, even when they may have differing opinions. In today's society where heated debates seem to dominate our discussions, this level-headed approach is sorely needed. Flame sets an example for listeners on how we can engage in healthy dialogue while still maintaining love and respect for one another.
While there are countless positive aspects about The Extra Nos Academy podcast, it would be remiss not to mention any potential drawbacks. One possible downside is that the episodes can sometimes feel slightly repetitive or rehash familiar themes. However, given the nature of theological discussions, revisiting certain topics from different angles can also offer valuable insights and reinforce key concepts.
In conclusion, The Extra Nos Academy podcast is an absolute must-listen for anyone seeking solid theology presented in a powerful yet respectful manner. Flame has done an outstanding job transitioning from music to podcasting, continuing to deliver outstanding content that challenges and enlightens his audience. With his thoughtful approach and genuine love for others, Flame sets a high standard for theological discussions in our modern world. I cannot recommend this podcast enough to fellow listeners looking for a podcast that is both intellectually stimulating and spiritually uplifting.

There's no need to make a parallel between the bread being broken and Jesus‘s body being broken. There's weak manuscript evidence for that idea. Nor, does the bread being broken symbolize Jesus' body and thus make the Sacrament of the Altar a metaphor. Let's discuss. Welcome back to season 3, episode 3A. We continue our talk on the Lord's Supper. This time around we are thinking about Jesus' use of the word, "is," and it's meaning. To be sure, is always means is. Even when it's being used in a metaphorical or parabolic sentence. Let's discuss. #ChristForYou http://Smarturl.it/ChristForYou
We're back with season 3, episode 3. In it, we read from The Spirituality of the Cross by Gene Veith, Jr.. We discuss confidence from Holy Communion, the unworthy manner is explained, & the goodness of material means. In addition, we celebrate and learn how time & eternity meets at the Lord's Table. Indeed, Christ for us! Enjoy!
Welcome back! This is Season 3, episode 2A. As promised, this is one the short talks that will supplement each episode. In it, FLAME addresses the Roman Catholic and Lutheran Lord Supper Differences, Cannibalism, & the Unworthy Manner. Enjoy!
We are back in the book, Free to Be: A Handbook to Luther's Small Catechism. Season 3, episode 2 discusses:1. The communal nature of the Lord's Supper. This holy meal not only strengthens our faith but unites us as a family. Jesus meets us with forgiveness and family fellowship. 2. The hunger for revival as expressed in the Asbury Revival. And what it may reveal about our longing for the nearness of God. That in which the Lord's Supper also satisfies. 3. The 1500+ year teaching of the Mystical Union of the Lord's Supper that the majority of Christians hold. We listen to the song, That Long from the EP, Christ For You. Which further builds that case. Enjoy!
Welcome back! This is Season 3, episode 1A. As promised, this is one the short talks that will supplement each episode. Let's turn our attention to Numbers 21:4-9 and see God's instruction to look to His word to receive life. Although, this passage is not a Sacramental one, it helps us understand how to receive the Sacraments. God's visible word. We look to His word of promise however He says to. Enjoy!
We! Are! Back! Happy New Year!!! Welcome to season 3!!! In episode one we revisit the book, Free to Be: A Handbook to Luther's Small Catechism. The subject at hand is the Lord's Supper. The prevailing view is that the Sacrament of the Altar is memorial or symbolic in nature. Yet, biblically and according to church history, Christ is bodily present, in, with, and under the bread and wine. He promises to never leave us nor forsake us. He promises to forgive us of our sin. According to Matthew 26:26, He keeps those promises at the Lord's Table, bodily. "Now as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and after blessing it broke it and gave it to the disciples, and said, “Take, eat; this is my body.” And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he gave it to them, saying, “Drink of it, all of you, for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins." What an amazing promise. Such a comfort!
Recently I sat down with Cortez, aka, Vivid Cortez from Vivid Core Media to discuss an array of things related to my Lutheran journey. From criticism, the comment section, to backlash from Calvinist & more.
In this episode, FLAME continues expanding on his thoughts and intentions found in the EP, Extra Nos. The interlude, "Good Works" is the subject at hand. In addition, the reading from, The Genius Of Luther's Theology by Robert Kolb and Charles P. Arand proceeds. Finally, FLAME offers commentary from the book related to the freedom and assurance we have as creatures who simply receive from our Creator, God. From creation to redemption, humans are made to receive life. These truths function to alleviate the insecurities of inadequacy and human weakness that so strongly clings to our consciences. They ward off the ever looming attacks of anxiety and fear the old Adam threatens us with. In Christ we are free!

FLAME discuss the relevance of Lutheran thought for contemporary times. Particularly, concerning rap Culture, reimagining Christianity, community impact, & Lutheran strengths related to the way forward.
The fear of judgment dominated the Medieval Church. In theology and Christian culture. Similarly, in contemporary times many fear judgement, exposer, or being canceled. Perhaps not for religious reasons but the experience is similar. One is left with a troubled conscience. Fear, anxiety, pride or despair all result from this concern. The solution ultimately is found in being rightly oriented with Creator and creature. Christ Jesus makes this possible, by faith alone. Join Flame as he continues to unpack the central doctrine of justification by faith. The reading is from Robert Kolb and Charles Arand's, The Genius of Luther's Theology. Enjoy!—-The righteousness of faith, which God imputes to us through Christ without works, . . . is a merely passive righteousness. . . . For herewe work nothing, render nothing to God; we only receive and permit someone else to work in us, namely, God. Therefore it is appropriate to call the righteousness of faith or Christian righteousness "passive. This is a righteousness hidden in a mystery, which the world does notunderstand. In fact, Christians themselves do not adequately understand it or grasp it in the midst of their temptations. Therefore it must always be taught and continually exercised.Luther, "Lectures on Galatians, 1531-1535"
What does it mean to be human? It means to live rightly before God and one another; including the environment. Throughout the ages there have been many attempts to define the human being. Mostly through philosophy and/or contemporary categories. The Lutherans Reformers help us rightly define the human creature according to scripture. Join Flame as he continues to unpack the central doctrine of justification by faith. The reading is from Robert Kolb and Charles P. Arand's, The Genius of Luther's Theology. “This is our theology, by which we teach a precise distinction between these two kinds of righteousness, the active and the passive, so that morality and faith, works and grace, secular society and religion may not be confused. Both are necessary, but both must be kept within their limits.Luther, "Lectures on Galatians, 1531-1535"
Moving along in Season 2 with episode #3!!! This season will focus on the doctrine of justification. FLAME will unpack the Reformation landmark of justification by faith alone. This episode addresses "law & gospel" which are the two ways God speaks to us through His holy word. If you blur the lines between law and gospel, you will only add a burden to one's faith and distort the doctrine of justification by faith alone. In addition, FLAME addresses his song "Ordo Salutis" from his EP, "Extra Nos." All centered around justification by faith alone. The reading from this installment is from Gene Veith Jr's: The Spirituality of the Cross: The Way of the First Evangelicals. Tap in!
If You Think Having Answers to Your Deepest Questions will Satisfy, Listen in!!!——Season 2 continues with episode #2!! This season will focus on the doctrine of justification. FLAME will unpack the Reformation landmark of justification by faith alone. This episode addresses “speculation” which is the soul's attempt to find peace and justification by having all the answers. Speculation will not lead to salvation, however. Oftentimes, it leaves a person empty, unsatisfied, and only raises more and more questions. In addition, FLAME addresses his song "2KR" from his EP, "Extra Nos." All centered around justification by faith alone. The reading from this installment is from Gene Veith Jr's: The Spirituality of the Cross: The Way of the First Evangelicals.Dive in!
Welcome to season 2!! This season will focus on the doctrine of justification. FLAME will unpack the Reformation landmark of justification by faith alone. This episode addresses moralism which is the attempt to be a good person. Moralism will not lead to salvation, however. Oftentimes, it leads to masking personal issues and hypocrisy. In addition, FLAME addresses his song “Scattered Tulips” from his EP, “Extra Nos.” All centered around justification by faith alone. The reading from this installment is from Gene Veith Jr.'s: The Spirituality of the Cross: The Way of the First Evangelicals. Enjoy!
This is a bonus episode of the collected conversation between FLAME, Mike Real, Lex Lutheran, DJ Code, & Vivid Cortez. In it, they discuss baptism and an array of angels stemming from the freedom and assurance baptism brings. Things such as backsliding, bearing fruit, and the fear of abusing baptism (antinomianism).
Episode 10 addresses the limited nature of examining one's affections. It's better to look to your baptism as a means of assurance. In addition, FLAME reviews his final song, Let Us Remember feat. Scootie Wop from his EP Word And Water. You can get it here: https://lnk.to/WordAndWater Also, the portion of reading from this installment is from Robert Kolb's book, Teaching God's Children His Teaching: A Guide for the Study of Luther's Catechism. Finally, FLAME concludes episode 10 discussing baptism's role against temptation and its all encompassing nature of the Christian's life. Dig in!
Why did Paul say he was glad he did not baptize many? What does being "baptized into Moses" mean? Does baptism replace circumcision? If Abraham was justified by faith and not circumcision, how can Lutherans claim baptism saves? Is "Spirit Baptism" superior to water baptism? These and many other complex components concerning baptism are confronted head on by Dr. Jordan Cooper and FLAME in this episode. Lock in and learn things about baptism you may have never been confronted with.
Episode 8 addresses the controversial topic of infant baptism. Most Christians in America have never grappled with the biblical claim of baby baptism. Or, they have dismissed it due to the grave misunderstanding of what baptism is, according to scripture. In addition, FLAME reviews his song, Mark Them from his current EP, Word And Water, regarding the matter. This week's reading is from the book, Has American Christianity Failed, by Bryan Wolfmueller. Also, FLAME was inspired to give away a few books. The person who writes the most compelling and comprehensive statement on baptismal regeneration will receive two free books. A paragraph or two is sufficient. No longer than one page. The two giveaways are:1. Has American Christianity Failed by Bryan Wolfmueller2. Baptized Into Christ: A Guide to the Christian Life by Jordan CooperFor those who want to read further into the historicity of infant baptism, I'd recommend:1. Infant Baptism In the First Four Centuries by Joachim Jeremias 2. The Origins of Infant Baptism by Joachim Jeremias
This installment is a response to episode 7 on Spirit Baptism and Pentecost, from Acts 2. In it, FLAME addressing misconceptions from some in his comment sections. The book of Acts is unique. The term, "redemptive historic uniqueness" has been used to describe its nature. Many have questions concerning the varying descriptions of the givings of the Holy Spirit. As well as, the varying descriptions of baptism's oder in connection with the giving of the Holy Spirit. In some cases, the Holy Spirit is given through baptism. In other cases, person's were baptized but had not received the Holy Spirit until the Apostles laid hands on them. FLAME aims to bring clarity to this concern. Also, he sets out to prove that the varying order of things does not mean one must experience a second and more superior baptism. Known as, "Spirit Baptism." Enjoy!
As promised, FLAME is addressing the notion of "Spirit Baptism." Some have stated there is a need for a superior baptism to water baptism. Others have stated "Spirit Baptism" replaces water baptism. Either way, both notions are incorrect. In this segment, FLAME will explain the origin, definition, and error of what some call, "Spirit Baptism." The article, THE BAPTISM OF THE HOLY SPIRIT is available here: https://lutheranmissions.org/the-baptism-of-the-holy-spirit/ Enjoy!
Episode 6 postulates the reality that we perpetually live in the posture of reception. All that we have, which pertains to life and Godliness, comes from God. A gift! Baptism is another delivery system whereby Jesus hands us salvation and assurance. This week's reading is from, The Spirituality of the Cross - 3rd Edition by Gene Edward Veith Jr. In addition, FLAME listens to and discusses his song, "Read Em All" from his EP, Word And Water. Enjoy!
In episode 5, FLAME walks listeners through the implications of baptism's daily impact. A favorite line from the readings is, "God sent his Spirit to you in your Baptism to do just that--to kill the old Adam in you, to raise up the new you day by day, to keep you and make you what you will be." This episode also visits the popular song from Word And Water, The Patristics. As mentioned, the book containing the curation of quotes from the Apostolic Fathers and the Patristics is titled, What the Bible Teaches About Baptism & How the Earliest ChristiansUnderstood These Biblical Texts by Chris Rosebrough. Enjoy the free download. http://0352182.netsolhost.com/Baptism%20Texts%20%26%20the%20Earliest%20Christians.pdf
Episode 4 confronts our former way of functioning, known in scripture as the “old Adam.” The sinful flesh refuses to stay quiet as it relates to human efforts, merit, and works based living. It is God Himself who silences the old Adam by gifting us salvation. We can not earn our way into God's good graces. Baptism is the means whereby God kills the old Adam and raises us to new life, in Christ.
In episode 3 FLAME tackles the reality that baptism is a work of God not a work of human hands. This demonstrated by reading Ephesians 5:25-27 & 1 Peter 3:20-21. He kicks the episode off by visiting his song, He Delivers from the latest EP, Word And Water and explains key portions of the lyrics. Finally, he walks through the next section of the book, Free to Be: A handbook to Luther's Small Catechism. Happy digging!
FLAME sits down with Pastor Bryan Wolfmueller & Lex Lutheran to discuss the claim that baptism saves. They address difficult questions like: How can baptism save if we are justified by faith? How can infants be saved through baptism if they can't repent and believe? If baptism saves wouldn't that compete with Jesus?
FLAME discusses how to best understand the Extra Nos Series. He list things to avoid and things to consider. Due to most people's generic American understanding of Christianity, we are unfortunately underexposed to what Ancient Christianity is. Therefore, we are limited in experience of all the sweetness of the gospel. FLAME then walks through a portion of the book: Free to Be: A handbook to Luther's Small Catechism. Enjoy!
Welcome to Extra Nos Academy. This podcast will function as an outlet for unpacking ancient Christianity as preserved through Lutheran thought. I will address matters of culture, scripture, theology, and the Book of Concord.
