President Trump travels to Dover Air Force Base today to receive the bodies of service members killed in the Iran war, as he insists Iran is desperate for a deal. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth got a grilling from both parties on Capitol Hill as he asked for billions more to fund a war Congress never voted to authorize, with 18 troops now dead and nearly 500 wounded. And Arizona has picked its candidates for the fall, with Trump ally Andy Biggs, who tried to overturn the 2020 election, winning the Republican nomination for governor and setting up what could be one of the closest races in the country against Democrat Katie Hobbs.Want more analysis of the most important news of the day, plus a little fun? Brett Forrest, The Lost Son: An American Family Trapped Inside the FBI's Secret Wars. The story shifts to 2017 when Brett Forrest, a Wall Street Journal correspondent, receives a tip from Bob Foresman, an American financier with deep ties to the Russian and Ukrainian power structures. Foresman reveals the outlines of a "story of great depth": a young Michigan man who worked for the FBI in counterterrorism had disappeared in Russia, after which his handlers visited his family, confiscated their electronics, and then effectively "shut the Rileys out." Forrest visits the Rileys in the winter and finds a family living through a tragedy but fueled by a relentless energy to find their son. The timeline of Billy's final known movements is established through his WhatsApp messages to his mother. He arrived in Moscow, met with contacts named Mikhail Pollenov and Elena Gorbacheva, and then took a train to Rostov-on-Don, a staging ground for the conflict in Eastern Ukraine. Billy told his parents he intended to join a "humanitarian mission" delivering food and medical supplies to civilians in the war zone. While he was a self-taught expert on the region and could read Russian well, his parents remained uncertain if his humanitarian goals were his true or only purpose. On June 24, 2015, while his parents were on a bicycle trip, Billy sent a final, cryptic message stating that "plans have changed," ending all further communication. (2)1898

A separate $83.3 million judgment in Carroll's favor is still being contested. Podcast hosts Jennifer Welch and Angie Sullivan sharply criticized homeschooling, calling it strange, harmful to social development, and politically connected to conservative cultural movements. Subpoenaed records have now begun arriving for New Mexico's Epstein Truth Commission, marking the point where the investigation moves from public promises and subpoena announcements into actual document review. The commission was created to investigate Jeffrey Epstein's activities at Zorro Ranch near Stanley, New Mexico, and to examine the institutional failures that allowed alleged abuse and trafficking connected to the ranch to go unanswered for decades. The commission has subpoena power, a $2 million budget, and a mandate to look at law enforcement inaction, financial ties, government records, and who may have known about or enabled Epstein's conduct in New Mexico. The records being sought include material from state agencies, law enforcement, financial institutions, Epstein-linked entities, and organizations with ties to him, including the Santa Fe Institute. Earlier subpoena batches targeted records involving Zorro Ranch, Epstein's estate, the FBI, DOJ, U.S. Attorney's offices, Deutsche Bank, JPMorgan Chase, New Mexico agencies, the governor's office, the State Land Office, the Santa Fe County Sheriff's Office, and others. The significance is that this could finally force a paper trail into the open: real estate records, police reports, investigative files, correspondence, donations, financial transactions, and communications tied to Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell. For survivors, the key question is still whether this commission will expose why New Mexico was treated like an afterthought for so long, despite years of allegations surrounding Zorro Ranch.to contact me:bobbycapucci@protonmail.comsource:Subpoenaed materials start flowing to Epstein 'truth commission' | Local News | santafenewmexican.com

We continue our examination of the sacrament of Confirmation, specifically both who should receive Confirmation and who can act as the minister of the sacrament. Fr. Mike reiterates that every baptized person, not yet confirmed, should receive the sacrament of Confirmation. Without Confirmation, Christian initiation remains incomplete. He also emphasizes the importance of choosing someone who can help you grow in the Faith as a sponsor. Fr. Mike concludes with an examination of who the minister of Confirmation is, and how its minister ties us to the apostolic succession. Today's readings are Catechism paragraphs 1306-1314. In this episode, we wrestle with one of Jesus' shortest promises and one of our biggest temptations: turning the Gospel into a formula we can control. As Jesus says, “Whoever receives you receives me,” we explore how the kingdom of God comes not through our activity, but through Christ being received in the preaching of his Word—a passive gift that creates faith where and when it pleases God. The law is always long and always getting longer, but the Gospel is wonderfully short: God is for you, and even the smallest signs of faith are evidence that Christ's promise has already taken hold.GOSPEL Matthew 10:40-42 40 "Whoever welcomes you welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me. 41 Whoever welcomes a prophet in the name of a prophet will receive a prophet's reward; and whoever welcomes a righteous person in the name of a righteous person will receive the reward of the righteous; 42 and whoever gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones in the name of a disciple -- truly I tell you, none of these will lose their reward." CARE OF SOULS: DEATHIn Care of Souls, a special mini-series podcast from Luther House of Study, Lutheran pastors and theologians come together to explore the deeply personal and pastoral task of preaching to and caring for those facing death, grief, and loss.Rooted in the theology of the cross and the Lutheran tradition of radical grace, this series offers both theological depth and practical guidance for pastors, church workers, and lay leaders.Across five episodes, the hosts tackle tough but essential questions on death:How does Lutheran theology speak uniquely to death and grief? What does faithful pastoral care look like when walking alongside those who mourn? How can pastors offer both honesty and hope in the face of tragedy and loss? What does ministry look like when death impacts the pastor as well as the congregation? Why do funerals matter, and what is God giving through them? With conversations, real-life stories, and reflections from the front lines of ministry, Care of Souls equips listeners to enter the sorrow of death not with easy answers, but with the crucified and risen Christ.Because in the end, it's not about avoiding death—it's about hearing the Gospel from the One who has passed through death and opened the way to life.Listen to Care of Souls wherever you listen to podcasts or on the Luther House website: Care of SoulsSupport the showInterested in sponsoring an episode of Scripture First?Email Sarah at sarah@lhos.org or visit our donation page: lutherhouseofstudy.org/donate
