After another week without live sport, we bring you the second episode of our "This Week In.. " series, one of our new schedule of podcasts on Balls.ie. Every week, we'll reminisce on a sporting week that was from a certain year. This week, we're looking back at 2004. Join Mick, Mark and PJ as they look back on Ireland's first Triple Crown win in 19 year when Eddie O'Sullivan's men played some of the most scintillating rugby in Irish history to overcome Matt Williams' Scotland. It's all hair styles, sexy jerseys, and post match interviews as we look back on what felt like the beginning of a rugby golden era. As well as that, Arsenal were on their way to an invincible season when they hosted Manchester United at Highbury with Thierry Henry at his very best, In the Champions League though, nothing at all went to plan as the craziest of seasons peaked at the Quarter Final stage. These ties were crazy long before the recent trend of crazy Champions League ties. We also look back on Padraig Harrington almost breaking America at the Players' Championship at Sawgrass. Introducing our brand new weekly gameshow, a football quiz show where members of the Balls.ie team attempt to "Stump Fynchy" Sean Fynch Meehan has ruined office quizzes for manys a moon now. Unfortunately, we are no longer allowed go to our office, so it's only fair we give him the chance to do it over the airwaves. With an impressive and hitherto useless knowledge of football, both mainstream and obscure, nobody has been yet able to Stump Fynchy. On today's episode, Mick McCarthy and Gary Connaughton team up to set a score, answering rapid fire football questions. Sean then has to beat their combined score answering questions of his own. (Any resemblance Stump Fynchy may have to the TV show The Chase is purely coincidental) Play along and shout at the eejitry. You can subscribe to the podcast here or search "Balls.ie Podcasts" on all good podcast apps, and if you enjoy it, please leave us a rating! Please be sure to rate and leave a review on your preferred podcast platform If you want to send in any questions to Stump Fynchy, send them thegaffer@balls.ie
The Buildup is Balls.ie weekly podcast, with Ladbrokes, where we preview all the major sporting action for the weekend ahead. We'll be building the hype, whetting the appetite and making some bold predictions for everything that's happening. This is the football section of the show where we talk to former Republic of Ireland international Kevin Doyle. With the near future of football and Ireland's trip to Bratislava uncertain, we talk to Kevin about playing behind closed doors, and about his own experience in Slovakia, when he scored probably his best goal for Ireland. That was also the match after which Stephen Ireland left the Ireland squad for good. We ask Kevin if there was too much hysteria surrounding Steve Staunton's time as Ireland manager and if, in hindsight, he was hard done by? If you want to listen to the entire show, subscribe to The Buildup on Balls.ie podcast feed or the general Balls.ie feed.
