Rio Ferdinand, Joe Cole, and Peter Crouch between them have won Champions League titles, Premier League medals, over 200 England caps. And yet not one of them ever lifted a major trophy for their country. In this roundtable, three men who were inside the 'Golden Generation' dressing room finally say what went wrong. The media that made players scared to perform. The manager who wouldn't listen. The moment the England coach was asking Beckham for a signed shirt. And why, for most of them, playing for England never felt free. But this isn't just a post-mortem. It's highlights what culture, leadership, and environment actually do to elite performers — and why getting those things wrong can waste a golden generation of talent. Thanks to our partners on this episode:Postcode Lottery

Welcoming Gary Stannett MBE to Purposely Podcast, Chief Executive of the Rio Ferdinand Foundation, the UK charity that uses sport and the creative arts to open up opportunities for young people in communities that have historically been overlooked and underinvested.Gary came into this work through youth work and community sports development, not through a career plan. He built programmes from the ground up in South London, earned his qualifications alongside the work, and has spent nearly 30 years getting better at something he never expected to turn into a career. That experience shapes how he leads and how the foundation operates. The Rio Ferdinand Foundation was set up around 15 years ago, inspired in part by Rio's mother Janice, who was deeply embedded in community life in Peckham and served as the foundation's chair until her death in 2017. It started with a focus on education and training for young people in London and Manchester, and has since grown to deliver work in Belfast, Derry, Sligo and across the UK and Ireland through partnerships with other organisations. In this conversation, Gary and Mark get into what it actually means to run a charity with a famous name attached to it. The brand opens doors but it does not conjure funding. Every partnership still has to be earned, every impact still has to be evidenced, and there is a constant discipline required to make sure people are engaging with the foundation for the right reasons and not just for access to Rio. Gary is clear-eyed about all of it.He talks about the foundation's model, using football and youth culture as a way in, then moving young people through personal development, accredited training and real pathways into careers. The goal is not a quick programme but a longer journey, connecting young people with industries and employers they might never otherwise encounter, and building the networks and confidence that social mobility actually requires.Gary also reflects on what he has learned about leadership over time, becoming less harsh on himself, stepping back more, and bringing people on the journey rather than pushing them towards a vision they do not yet share. And he talks about young people today, the very real weight of poverty, housing costs, debt and a changing jobs market, alongside the energy, talent and resilience he sees every day that keeps him showing up.Find out more about the Rio Ferdinand Foundation at rioferdinandfoundation.orgThis episode of Purposely is brought to you by Benevity and Trust Investments NZ.
Anderson sits down with Rio Ferdinand for one of the most honest and unexpected Rio Meets yet — a story that goes far beyond football and one that's been requested by thousands of you for many years. From leaving home at 11 and living in a football stadium without any parents, to becoming a Golden Boy winner and signing for Manchester United via Jorge Mendes, Anderson opens up on the reality behind the journey - including why money, not passion, drove his early international career. He reveals what it was really like living with Cristiano Ronaldo - from brotherly support to full-blown arguments, mind games over ping pong matches and being sent to do the weekly Costco shop. Plus, why Ronaldo's obsession with winning left a lasting mark… and why Anderson believes just “5%” of that mentality would have changed his entire career. There are incredible stories from what he described as “the greatest dressing room in football” - including why Ryan Giggs pushed him to take a Champions League final penalty, the moment his life flashed before his eyes walking to the spot, and how legends like Paul Scholes and Sir Alex Ferguson shaped him (even if he couldn't understand a word the manager was saying).Anderson also lifts the lid on the personalities inside that iconic United squad - from naming his dog after Wes Brown, to clashes with Cesc Fàbregas, dressing room chaos with Nani, and why that team's togetherness made them the best he ever played in.Plus, his honest take on modern football - including why Bruno Fernandes has carried United in recent years, why Michael Carrick deserves more respect, and why Neymar is still Brazil's key to winning the World Cup.This is Anderson like you've never seen him before - raw, funny, emotional and completely unfiltered. Fresh off winning “YouTube Channel of the Year” at the British Sports Journalism Awards, Rio Ferdinand is joined by Ste Howson and Joel Beya to break down Manchester United's performance against Brentford and what it really says about this team.Casemiro's record-breaking numbers spark a bigger debate: how do Manchester United replace him? And do those replacements have the mentality required to thrive under the pressure of Old Trafford?Rio also gives his honest take on Michael Carrick's time as interim manager, the perception around his impact, and what it could mean for his future in terms of a more permanent role.Mainoo gets his flowers for his recent performances before Ste gets praised after key predictions on Liam Rosenior and Arsenal's title race struggles come true. This is Paul Pogba like you've never seen him before. In one of his most open and honest conversations, Pogba sits down with Rio Ferdinand to talk through the moments that defined his career and the personal struggles that shaped the person behind the player. From growing up at Manchester United's academy alongside (and fighting) Ravel Morrison, to learning from legends like Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes and Rio himself, Pogba reveals what it really took to survive in one of football's most demanding environments - and why he felt he had to leave when he did.He opens up on the reality of his second spell at Manchester United, the pressure of his world-record transfer fee, the lack of clarity or plan for his role in the team, and why he believes the environment at the club made it difficult to succeed.Pogba reveals that he did not know who Graeme Souness was until Rio gave him some detail on his career and achievements within the game which prompts a fascinating discussion about how he felt the media misunderstood him.But this conversation goes far deeper than football.Pogba speaks candidly about family issues, betrayal, and the emotional toll it took on him and those closest to him - including the impact it had on his mother. He also reflects on his time away from the game, the challenges of being out of football, and what it's been like watching from the sidelines with his children asking when he'll return. There are also powerful insights into his career highs — winning the World Cup with France, his relationship with stars such as Kylian Mbappé and how players like Andrea Pirlo, N'Golo Kanté and Antonio Conte helped elevate his game to another level.Plus:Why consistency of position is everything at the elite levelHis honest thoughts on Bruno Fernandes, Kobbie Mainoo, Kevin De Bruyne, Scott McTominay and modern midfield rolesThe truth about his relationship with José MourinhoAnd why he will never change who he isThis is a rare, unfiltered look at one of football's most talked-about players - in his own words.

Rio Meets is where the biggest names in football tell the stories you've never heard before and in this episode Gabriel Jesus sits down with Rio Ferdinand for one of his most open and revealing interviews yet. From growing up in a favela playing football outside a prison, to sharing a dressing room with legends at Manchester City, Jesus reflects on the journey that shaped him — both as a player and a person. When discussing Arsenal's title challenge, Jesus describes the difference in leadership between Martin Odegaard and Declan Rice along with the two young players who are “killers” in training who expects big things from.He lifts the lid on working under Pep Guardiola - including the tactical demands, the intensity in training, and the one thing Pep tries to coach out of all the Brazilian players.Jesus also reveals how he developed his bond with Neymar and why he thinks he's the greatest player of his generation. There are also incredible insights into elite dressing rooms, from Vincent Kompany's leadership to Sergio Agüero's mentality, plus Jesus' ultimate 5-a-side team. This is a conversation about football at the highest level — but more importantly, about mindset, identity and what it really takes to win.

FROM THE VAULT: In this clip, Rio Ferdinand reflects on his unforgettable first meeting with Sir Alex Ferguson, revealing the intimidation, psychology, and presence that defined Manchester United's legendary manager. From a surreal hotel encounter that felt carefully staged, to Ferguson's surprisingly warm pitch that convinced Rio to join the club, this is a rare insight into how one conversation helped secure a British record transfer.Rio also opens up on the reality of life under Sir Alex — from the shift in personality once you crossed onto the training pitch, to the ruthless standards, explosive half-time bollockings, and the relentless winning mentality that drove Manchester United's dominance. He shares behind-the-scenes details on dressing room culture, training ground intensity, and why respect for Ferguson went far beyond fear. This is a fascinating look at what it truly took to succeed under one of football's greatest managers, and the mindset required to survive at the very top.If you like this clip, you can catch the full episode here:https://youtu.be/OYMXtCgwtS0?si=jvSL3g6uLrs8uV2S ChumbawambaFor more Peter Crouch: Twitter - https://twitter.com/petercrouch Therapy Crouch - https://www.youtube.com/@thetherapycrouch For more Chris Stark Twitter - https://twitter.com/Chris_StarkInstagram - https://www.instagram.com/chrisstark/For more Steve Sidwell Twitter - https://twitter.com/sjsidwell Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/stevesidwell14 #PeterCrouch #ThatPeterCrouchPodcast Hosted on Acast. Tony Armstrong considers himself a cynical person, which is why it's a somewhat ironic that he's emerged from his latest project with renewed optimism. The former AFL player has spent the past year researching the scope of racism in sport and society and seeking to do something about it. He's seen the failed anti-racism campaigns, the well meaning but toothless initiatives and Armstrong has had enough. Tony has travelled the globe to speak to influential athletes, tech pioneers and grass roots advocates to chart a way forward in an increasingly insidious space.

Michael Owen brings his Ballon d'Or trophy for this episode and he leaves Rio Ferdinand in no doubt about how good he felt he was as a young player. Rio has wanted to do this interview for years because he wanted to show everyone watching and listening a different side to one of just four Englishman to win the most coveted individual award in world football. After admitting he was on the decline when he got the Ballon d'Or, Owen discusses his career and the unshakeable self-belief he had in his own ability from when he was a schoolboy. He names the striker who impresses him most in the game today, reveals his concerns about the lack of good English strikers and states why he's so confused about Harry Kane's move to Bayern Munich. Welcome to Rio Reacts, where Rio Ferdinand gives his raw, unfiltered reactions to the stories that get your WhatsApp groups buzzing! This episode, Rio's talking about two generational talents:
There's a certain kind of strength that comes from knowing who you are, even when the world tries to tell you otherwise. That's what stood out in my conversation with Rio Ferdinand. Not just the success, but the mindset behind it: the habit of refusing to be reduced to a single story.Rio's journey is a lesson in identity, drive, and turning fear into fuel. With all the labels the world tries to throw at us, it's not just about ignoring them, it's about choosing your own. From the football pitch to the ballet studio, Rio shows us what it means to challenge assumptions and walk your own path, even when it's uncomfortable. In this episode, I also dig into a powerful psychological study that reveals how quickly our judgments are shaped by context, how one label can change everything we think we see. It's a sobering insight into how easily we box others in… and how often we do it to ourselves. If you've ever questioned the limits placed on you, or wanted to rewrite the script entirely, there's something in this one for you. Here is a list of studies referenced in the episode:Stereotype and Social Class Study. Ravel Morrison joins the podcast this week, and might just be the most surprising guest we have ever had on Undr The Cosh. Ravel lifts the lid on the lies, rumours, and misconceptions so many people have about him and why he never lived up to his potential. From a young age, Ravel had eyes on him as he came through the ranks at Manchester United under Sir Alex Ferguson, where he was widely regarded as the best talent in the academy. With a dressing room full of world-class professionals like Gary Neville, Rio Ferdinand, and Cristiano Ronaldo, it's hard to understand why so much of that talent went unfulfilled. Despite his raw ability, Sam Allardyce managed to get glimpses of his best including that unforgettable goal against Tottenham but after agent disputes, he was forced out the door and once again labelled a “bad egg.” After moving abroad, Ravel hit the lowest point in his career under Simone Inzaghi at Lazio before rediscovering his love for football playing in Mexico. And of course, in true Undr The Cosh fashion, we get the full story behind his obsession with tuna, the infamous incident involving Lee Clark's pond, and why Gary Neville once lost it and smashed his phone. Ravel opens up about the people who lied about him, his beef with Zaha and explains exactly where things went wrong and why a player with his level of talent never fulfilled his full potential.
