This week on the Fozcast we are joined by the man who has the fastest goal ever in Premier League history, scoring in 7.69 seconds and you never guess who was in goal, our very own Ben Foster! Of course it's Ireland international Shane Long! Shane has been a guest we've wanted to have on the Fozcast for a long time and he didn't disappoint. He told us all about what the Irish squad get up too when they go away on international break, which is traditionally very different from the English culture. We also look back on his career, specifically that Southampton squad in 2015 where they had the likes of Virgil Van Dijk, Sadio Mane, James Ward-Prowse, Dusan Tadic and many more. Shane also chats to us about his move to Hull and how it didn't go as smoothly as he hoped… Once again we hope you enjoyed this episode of the Fozcast! If you would like to see us live on September 22nd at William Aston Hall in Wrexham, joined by Elliot Lee and James McClean, get your tickets down below!

The shift from an individual contributor into leadership is something that most people will face in their career at some point, and it's not always an easy decision. Director of People Ops and Total Rewards over at OwnBackup, as well as an accomplished opera singer, Shane Long is here to talk about his jump into leadership and take us through how he arms recruiters to be more effective during the offer stage and throughout. In this conversation, we dive into the best ways for startups to navigate total rewards, previously known as benefits and recognition, and the importance of identifying what motivates people, be it a candidate or team member. Shane weighs in on how to compete when there's a FANG company's comp offer that outpaces yours, before discussing that intricate matter of equity, transparency, and answering questions that are and aren't being asked. You'll hear about some frank feedback that was hard to hear but formed a crucial part of Shane's growth, plus the oddest and coolest advice he received early in his career that swung his decision to pursue leadership from a 'no' to a 'yes' and deeply influenced his leadership style. We also get a sneak peek behind the curtain of his enablement sessions with recruiters and learn the importance of empowering recruiters to be the most knowledgeable person in the room, and what that empowerment looks like in practice. He's a true powerhouse of leadership from a hugely successful startup that's experiencing endless and exponential growth, year after year, and we hope you can join us for another fantastic conversation!   Key Points From This Episode:   An introduction to Shane and a brief sprint through his illustrious opera career. How studying business and organizational psychology prepared him to be a recruiter. A great leader that impacted his early career and his decision to jump into leadership.  The oddest and coolest advice he's ever received. Hear about the type of leadership that most people react negatively to.  The frank feedback that was hard to hear but ended up pivoting his communication style. We discuss total rewards in the SaaS industry and why it's better to start at an early stage. Always revisiting candidate motivations, plus how to compete with FANG comp offers. A peek into the enablement sessions and calls that Shane does with recruiters. Diving into misunderstandings about equity and how to best navigate those conversations. Working with managers to coach them through figuring out what motivates their teams. Talking about what motivates different people and how to find the right questions to ask!   Tweetables:   “At the end of the day, for me, I want to have a positive impact on my team and on their development, and empower them to have the same impact on the organization.” — Shane Long [0:09:36]   “First and foremost, it's not just about comp you want to sell, you've got to sell the company as well. You've got to package the company in a way that's going to be appealing to [the candidate].” — Shane Long [0:15:40]   “A lot of companies keep equity structure, and logistics and calculations really close to the chest or really close to the top of the organization. I say that recruiters are the frontline, they're the ones talking to these candidates. They need to be the most knowledgeable about it.” — Shane Long [0:19:33]   Links Mentioned in Today's Episode:   Shane Long on LinkedIn OwnBackup Talk Talent to Me Hired

A depleted Saints side lost 2-0 at Leicester City on Saturday evening - we discuss all the fallout from the match. The main topic is the injury crisis - first-teamers including Jannik Vestergaard, Danny Ings, Oriol Romeu, Moussa Djenepo, Michael Obafemi, Nathan Tella, Nathan Redmond and Mohamed Salisu all missed out. To add to that, Will Smallbone picked up an injury at Leicester and we'll also be without Ryan Bertrand in our next Premier League game - at home to Arsenal - after he picked up a suspension following his 5th booking of the season. Also on the agenda, Jack Stephens' defending, the 'foul' on Ibrahima Diallo, the introduction of Shane Long, and much more. Ben Stanfield (Host) is joined by the same merry band – regular panellist Glen de la Cour (League One Minus 10 Blog), Freddie Hunt (The Ugly Inside) and Simon Peach (Press Association). TSP112 discusses what may happen to Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg this summer, whether Saints may be forced to try and reintegrate Mario Lemina into the squad, how many more chances Sofiane Boufal is likely to get, as well as the likelihood of Moi Elyounoussi returning from Celtic and ‘tearing it up’ in the Premier League. Moving further forward, Danny Ings has been a sensation for Saints this season, but do Che Adams, Shane Long and Michael Obafemi give the Club enough firepower heading into 2020-21? Does Adams have attitude problems, is Obafemi too injury prone, will Shane Long be offered a new contract……or could Guido Carrillo offer the team some much needed physicality up front? The TSP views and opinions are, as ever, a blended mix of honesty, constructiveness and reality. Inviting Wolves into your home is always risky... Just writing that brings back memories of news stories from my childhood, where ordinary people somehow decided having a Tiger or a Lion or a Wolf as a pet. Not to mention Little Red Riding Hood or any of the other fairy tales where Wolves represented danger or a threat. But, if I had to pick a fairy tale equivalent for last weekend’s match, it would have to be the Three Little Pigs. Wolves huffed and puffed, but could not blow the house down, as Saints defended well, stood up to the test, and came out 3-1 winners over the newly promoted, top half side. Whether they were distracted or not, the performance and the result were, dare I say, what we’ve come to expect. An organized, aggressive performance, with a lot of work done without the ball, a strong performance from an academy product, a Shane Long goal, and an enthusiastic manager who celebrated every goal with us. It’s a beautiful thing. As is seeing us go 8 points clear of the drop zone. Joining me to discuss the match and his new YouTube Channel is Mike Smale. His new project is MatchDaylogs, and I had a great time discussing how he got started, what changes it’s made to his matchday experience and how he has made sure doing the vlog doesn’t get in the way of supporting the team, enjoying the match, or teaching your kids proper fan/referee interaction. You can get in touch and follow along on Mike’s journey on all of the major social media channels. Saints vs Liverpool. We are two years removed from the EFL Cup run that saw us deny Klopp’s LFC even one goal during the 2016/2017 season. I remember the tense night, under the lights, when, after missing several half chances, and after Forster clawed the ball off the line to keep the score at 1-0 to Saints,  Sims broke from an LFC corner and Shane Long made himself available for a pass to finish off Liverpool and send Saints through to Wembley. There was, at that moment, no better feeling. In a season of dour football, that was the light, the spark of joy in an otherwise miserable year. Unfortunately, this week didn’t pan out that way. Although the match was played at high intensity, and it was a respectable and entertaining watch for the neutral, ultimately Saints failed to take anything away from the match other than, perhaps, the belief that they can indeed play their game against almost anyone. Sure, the switch to a back five was defensive in a way, but there’s believing in your system and then there’s being naive. Saints chose a formation that was defensively solid and yet gave themselves width to attack Liverpool. Overall, I enjoyed the heck out of it. What I enjoyed more than that, though, was my conversation with Lucy Highnett (@lucyhighnett). Lucy brings the perfect blend of fan of the team and student of the game. I always learn something when I speak with her for an episode and even this time, off record, she clarified some of the differences in the US and UK higher education system. But, for the show, over Skype, we cover the LFC match, go on some tangents, and finish by answering some of your questions- only some because there were a lot and I was booked to be a guest on the In That Number Podcast and I was already keeping them waiting… but, don’t worry, I’ll answer a few more in this week’s newsletter, which you can sign up for here. Part 1 After winning the FA Cup semi final against Brighton 1-0, Manchester City have moved a step closer to the unprecedented Quadruple. Fear not though, Liverpool fans, for I have had a premonition. While looking at the remaining Premier League fixtures, I have identified 4 games in which I think City will definitely drop points in 3 at least of: Crystal Palace away, the Manchester Derby, Tottenham at home and Leicester City away. Part 2 Liverpool continued their charge towards a 19th title with an uncomfortable 3-1 win at Southampton. Can you imagine conceding to Shane Long? Big week for Chelsea and Tottenham in the top 4 hunt, as they won midweek while United and Arsenal lost away matches at Wolves and Everton In European football, Bayern re-took the lead of the Bundesliga in convincing fashion, while Barcelona are now basically champions once again. Part 3 It was widely reported this week that figures from the top European clubs met to discuss future plans for the Champions League that could see its biggest changes since the early 90's. The proposal put forward by the likes of Juventus and PSG are not 100% clear, but changes could include moving to 4 groups of 8, while also moving to a promotion/relegation system. Certain clubs are also looking for matches to be played on weekends and that leagues would be reduced from 20 teams to 18 and reducing the number of domestic trophies. Part 4 Big, big week of action coming up in the next 7 days. First we see the return of European competition. On Tuesday night: Tuesday: Tottenham vs. Man City & Porto vs. Liverpool Wednesday: Man United vs. Barcelona & Ajax vs. Juventus Thursday: Arsenal vs. Napoli Also a huge weekend in Premier League action, particularly Sunday Saturday: Man United vs. West Ham Sunday: Crystal Palace vs. Man City & Liverpool vs. Chelsea Monday: Watford vs. Arsenal Closing Contact us: @thetfpod on Twitter and @totalfootballpod on Instagram or email us at theTFpod@gmail.com Remember to rate/review the show on your podcast provider of choice and do tell friends and family about the show. First things first, this week’s episode contains some adult language. I’ve beeped it (at least most of it), but be warned. Moving on...I’m not really a “win at all costs” type of person. But I am, without a doubt, someone who believes in working your absolute tail off, day in and day out, putting in extra time to improve and get better each and every day. To the point where I find it easier to criticize someone like Pogba over Shane Long. In fact, I’d take Long on my team over Pogba all day. I know it doesn’t make any sense at all, and it might be petty and stupid and short sighted, but there are some things I respect and some things I can’t and won’t tolerate… with that said, my goodness do we need to score some goals, and play defence, and really just get things sorted out. The display at the Etihad was atrocious, and the team desperately need to turn things around.   This week I spoke with Aydin Osman who was at the match, and we discuss it, take some questions, regarding the team, and the management, and everything else. The @SaintsFCPodcast 's John Bailey and Tom Parker discuss all things Southampton as we look back at Saints performances against Tottenham Hotspur, Bournemouth, Crystal Palace and West Bromwich Albion and reaching 40 points in the Premier League Also on the agenda is James Ward-Prowse and Nathan Redmond's England debuts, Ryan Bertrand's 100th appearance for Southampton and Shane Long's recent run of form. We work out how to pronounce Dusan Tadic, then proceed to mispronounce his and a load of other players and managers names wrong in the podcast and Dele Alli is declared to the be the future world's best player! It's been a good few games for Southampton, so this podcast is a suitably cheery meander through a couple of wins and good performances. Enjoy, and let us know what you think, either on twitter, iTunes reviews and ratings or even on email: saintsfcpodcast@gmail.com

Kevin Doyle is this week's guest, and he talks to us about life in Colorado, along with how he found out he had missed out on Euro 2016, the truth behind those Sean St Ledger/Taylor Swift stories, and how a French teammate greeted him 'Story Horse'.  Elsewhere, Manchester United has sprung more leaks than, er, Manchester United's defence, so we discuss what next for Mou. Also, we have news of NASA's stinging criticism of Wayne Rooney (kind of).  Steve McClaren's Weird Stuff From The Internet features an incredible story about Shane Long and his dog, while fantasy returns with an exultant Gavan Casey.  Find us on twitter: @Mikeyt086, @GavanCasey and @gcooney93.

An 'El Classico' podcast for the penultimate episode of the season, with just Tom and Dan left to chew over the disappointing loss to Southampton at the weekend. Instead of a proper review, we talk about everything from the captaincy of Hugo Lloris to whether we'd sign Shane Long (yes, that Shane Long). We talk about Daniel Levy's end of season statement, playing Champions League games at Wembley and saying goodbye to White Hart Lane. Newcastle is previewed, but the real matter at hand is getting a result - ANY result - to ensure the season doesn't end disastrously by seeing us finish below the scum again. Surely we have to do it.....right? COYS
