LB Von Miller has been named September AFC Defensive Player of the Month, which comes as the fourth time he's received the honor and the first since September 2016. Dan Cohen on the Israeli Operatives Behind some of Colombia's Most Violent Death Squads

MintCast

Colombia is regularly described as the Israel of Latin America. Although on opposite sides of the world from each other, the two countries share many similarities. They are both key outposts of U.S. power in their regions, helping make their neighborhood safe for American businesses and American profits. Both governments are carrying out wars against indigenous populations. Both talk of a “peace process” with their enemies but neither seems to get any closer to a lasting agreement. And both smear those enemies as terrorists.Violence in both nations has made worldwide headlines of late. In Colombia, President Ivan Duque's attempts to push through an economic shock therapy package consisting of privatizing the country's pension and healthcare systems, reducing the minimum wage, and increasing taxes on basic necessities sent millions into the streets in a nationwide general strike.Duque has responded with an iron fist, sending first armed police and then the military into the streets to quell the protests. According to local human rights group Indepaz, 71 people have been killed, as armored cars fill the streets and drones and helicopters terrorize strikers from above.Meanwhile, in Israel, security forces attacked the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem as worshippers were celebrating Ramadan at the third holiest site in Islam. The attack drew a response from Hamas, which began firing rockets into Israel, which, in turn, led to a massive Israeli reaction, with the IDF pounding much of Gaza into rubble. Hundreds of people were killed, thousands injured, and tens of thousands fled their homes. Among the buildings targeted were schools, a COVID-19 test center, and the headquarters of international media organizations.Unusually, Israeli actions drew criticism from the centers of power in the United States, with senior politicians and media figures alike condemning the attack and using words like “apartheid” and “ethnic cleansing” — a signal that perhaps a change in attitude is beginning to take place and real change could be around the corner.Last week, MintPress also revealed how Israel is helping Colombia repress its citizens, providing arms and training to security services.Yet a new investigation from our guest today has highlighted how the links between Israel and Colombia go far deeper and how Israeli officials were the masterminds of political massacres carried out by the Colombian government.Dan Cohen's new work shows how the Colombian government's genocidal policy of massacring its political opponents — over 4,000 members of the Patriotic Union Party, including two presidential candidates, 14 parliamentarians, 15 mayors, nine mayoral candidates, three members of the House of Representatives and three senators — was done on the suggestion of an Israeli official, Rafael ‘Rafi' Eitan. Eitan was employed by the government to advise it on counterinsurgency strategies.Another Israeli, Yair Klein, provided the training for many of the most notorious far-right paramilitary groups, including the AUC, thought to have been responsible for around 80% of the killings during the civil war. The leader of the AUC, Carlos Castaño, was educated in Israel and credited the apartheid state for teaching him all he knew about terrorism. “I learned an infinity of themes in Israel,” he wrote in his autobiography.Support the show (https://www.mintpressnews.com/donations/)Support the show (https://www.mintpressnews.com/donations/)

Secondly, we address the managerial chaos unfolding across Europe. All top five clubs in Germany have new or no manager. Two of the top four teams in Italy have new managers. #Zidane is gone. Together as one body, Christ reconciled both groups to God by means of his death on the cross, and our hostility toward each other was put to death. ~ Ephesians 2:16 (NLT) Cliques. If you're not sure what a clique is, count yourself blessed. A clique is a closed group of people who generally consider themselves friends which always hang out together and don't really associate with other people outside of their group. Cliques also don't generally allow others to join their group; barriers are established and no one is allowed in lest the group balance be upset. When members are added, it's because they are deemed worthy and like-minded. Cliques, overall have a negative association – people agree they are not a good thing. However, with this current generation of young adults and teens, they've reinvented cliques. They don't call them that anymore, because cliques are bad. Instead, they come up with cooler names like “squad.” Though the name has changed, reality hasn't. Here's the dangerous thing about cliques (beyond that they are exclusive): they tend to look at others outside of the squad as inferior. No, they may not state it out loud (though that is often the case), but within the squad they talk about others outside the squad. They gossip. They begin rumors. They laugh about other's hurts or perceived pain or issues. They seek to take down those that are either popular or are a threat to their own popularity. In their essence, squads seek to destroy others, not lift them up. They are hit squads. Unfortunately, our schools and churches are full of squads. I've seen it in both places, having the unique opportunity to serve as an academy chaplain and church pastor. The sad reality is that these people call themselves Christians – followers of Christ. Yet, there is nowhere in the Scriptures where Jesus tore into others, judging them as inferior. Nowhere do we see Jesus refusing the friendship of others. Nowhere can be found where Jesus turned those away who genuinely wanted to be a part of His life. Nowhere did He gossip or slander. Our verse today states, “Christ reconciled both groups to God by means of his death on the cross, and our hostility toward each other was put to death.” Here is our challenge: Be hospitable, not hostile. Be open, not closed off. Invite people in, don't exclude them. Being a Christian is about bringing people together, not tearing them apart.
