In this episode we look back on Saturday's 2-0 win over Everton, beginning with discussion of a first half that saw the visitors come closest to scoring, although Arsenal were denied what was an obvious penalty when Kai Havertz was fouled in their box. The Gunners tried hard but found it tough to break down obstinate opposition, before Viktor Gyokeres put us ahead in the 89th minute. Max Dowman played a big part in that opening goal, and then produced something very special to seal the game and become the youngest goalscorer for Arsenal, and in Premier League history. We discuss that incredible moment, the replays, the videos, the reactions, and lots more, as well as analysing Mikel Arteta's decision to pick him ahead of senior players, and what it all means in the title race. We then have listener questions about Dowman's involvement going forward, Eberechi Eze, the manager's sideline reactions during a tense game, whether the team needed this kind of emotional release, and lots more besides.Get extra bonus content and help support Arseblog by becoming an Arseblog Member on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/arseblogAlso, if you're a fan of the show, please leave us a rating/review on your favourite podcast app, it'd be greatly appreciated! With injuries piling up and the fixture list tightening, Mikel Arteta rotated heavily — including handing competitive starts to two Hale End 16-year-olds: Max Dowman and Marley Salmon. The hosts unpack the unusual lineup, the confusing early shape, and how Arsenal eventually settled into the match after a tactical switch and a return to a familiar back four. There's detailed reaction to Noni Madueke's opener, Mansfield's equaliser after defensive hesitation, and the moment of quality that ultimately settled the tie — a brilliant strike from Eberechi Eze.Attention then turns to the worrying moment of the night as Riccardo Calafiori goes down with another muscular injury — raising fresh questions about availability at a critical stage of the season. The conversation moves to the bigger picture as the hosts analyse Arsenal's remarkable resilience this year: just three defeats in forty-six matches across all competitions. With injuries affecting key players such as Martin Ødegaard, the squad's ability to adapt and keep winning becomes a major theme of the discussion.Part two shifts to the off-pitch headlines as the panel reacts to Edu's sudden exit from Nottingham Forest, debating what it says about sporting director roles, ownership structures, and the chaos that can surround certain clubs. There's also frustration directed toward Norway manager Ståle Solbakken after his latest comments about Ødegaard's injury situation — and what it could mean ahead of the upcoming international fixtures. Finally, the focus turns to Europe as Arsenal prepare for a huge Champions League trip to face Bayer Leverkusen in Germany. Dharmesh Sheth is joined by Carl Anka, Jacqui Oatley and Dominic King to reflect on the weekend's sporting action. We begin with Saturday's Six Nations clash between England and Italy. England suffered an historic defeat in Rome, losing to Italy for the first time after 32 previous attempts by the Azzurri. Does this shock result mark the beginning of the end for Steve Borthwick? We then turn to the start of the new Formula 1 season. Our reporter Craig Slater joins us from Melbourne to discuss just how entertaining the opening Grand Prix was, with George Russell taking the win. Then it's on to the weekend's FA Cup action, with Max Dowman lighting up the One Call Stadium with an exciting performance, becoming the FA Cup's youngest-ever player as Arsenal advanced to the next round with a 2–1 win over Mansfield. With Arsenal still in all four competitions, we ask just how realistic a quadruple might be. Carl says he'll eat his hat — and his shoe — if Arsenal pull it off.Staying with the FA Cup, City came from behind to beat Newcastle 3–1 at St James' Park and reach the FA Cup quarter-finals and Dominic thinks Pep will end Arsenal this season with more trophies than Arteta. And it was Hollywood drama at the Racecourse Ground, where Chelsea beat ten-man Wrexham 4–2 after extra time.Next, it's another win for England's Lionesses, who beat Iceland 2–0 in a dominant display, peppering the goal with numerous chances. But with Spain in their World Cup qualifier group and only one automatic spot up for grabs, do the Lionesses need to be more ruthless in front of goal?We close out with a hot debate on Arsenal this season. In this episode we look back on Sunday's 2-1 win over Chelsea. We discuss this Arsenal side's prowess from set-pieces, and while it might not be to everyone's taste, it shouldn't be dismissed so easily – especially as it helped us win a very important game of football. We analyse the goals we scored, and the one we conceded, as well as chatting about how corners etc are now almost impossible to referee because of all the pushing and holding on both sides. We also talk about how Arsenal failed to control the game when Chelsea went down to 10 men, how tight margin games are part and parcel of a title race, and there's obvious praise for David Raya after his heroics late on ensured Mikel Arteta's side took all three points. Then we answer listener questions about Declan Rice, midfield options, Leandro Trossard's recent form, mooted changes to VAR, and lots more.Get extra bonus content and help support Arseblog by becoming an Arseblog Member on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/arseblogAlso, if you're a fan of the show, please leave us a rating/review on your favourite podcast app, it'd be greatly appreciated! #979 | Ed and Dan look back on United's 1–0 win at Everton. It was functional rather than convincing but a vital three points as United close in on a return to the Champions League. There's plenty of praise for another excellent Senne Lammens performance in goal under heavy pressure from Everton's agricultural set-piece routines. When, if ever, are referees going to protect goalkeepers who are now routinely fouled? It's all Mikel Arteta's fault. Despite the victory, was this another case of United struggling to break down a low-block until Benjamin Sesko's entrance on the hour? The striker now has six goals in his past seven appearances but should he have been on from the start? United will face another team willing to sit deep at the weekend, with struggling Palace at Old Trafford. In this hastily scheduled half of an Arsecast Extra, James and I look back at last night's horrendous 2-2 draw with Wolves at Molineux. We discuss the team selection, and how after making a great start, Arsenal failed to capitalise on Bukayo Saka's early goal. Despite going 2-0 up, we let it slip, and we analyse the goals we conceded, the unpleasant trends regarding our goal concessions this season, and how the defensive lapses are secondary to the fact that the attack looks so inhibited at this moment in time. We also wonder if that plays a part in the way the team played with fear in the second half, what it all means for the title race, the questions about our mentality, the growing sense of now or never for Mikel Arteta and, at the heart of it, a sense of frustration because we know this is a team capable of much better than we've been seeing of late. There's no way to sugarcoat this, Gooners: it's time to panic a bit. In this episode I'm joined by Ryan Hunn of the Stadio podcast to pore over last night's 1-1 draw with Brentford. We discuss a first half in which nothing much happened, but one which raised further questions about Eberechi Eze, and how we get more out him in an Arsenal shirt. The half-time introduction of Martin Odegaard helped, Noni Madueke put us ahead but we immediately sat back and Brentford equalised not long afterwards. We try and explain how and why that happened, as well as chatting about the final stages of the game in which we could have both won and last the game, coping with the chaos of the opposition set-pieces, hindsight substitutions, the grind of the Premier League, what Mikel Arteta will do – if anything – to try and find the attacking spark, and lots more.Follow Ryan on BlueSky here: https://bsky.app/profile/ryanhunn.bsky.socialGet extra bonus content and help support Arseblog by becoming an Arseblog Member on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/arseblog Hosted on Acast.
