NBA officials are human beings (at least for now)...and they are emotional beings, just like the NBA players they share the court with. So it's no surprise when you see tempers flare in the heat of the moment between the two parties. And despite the contentious interactions we sometimes see on the court, players and officials often do end up forming relationships. And like any relationship, there are ups and downs. So today, Tim Macmahon takes us inside the game within the game, as NBA players try to win over the referees…and whether or not it actually works. Learn more about your ad choices. It's another episode of The Oil Stream in Five presented by Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen. Nielson breaks down the Oilers game 3 loss to the Kings. Has the series simply been too fast for NHL officials too keep up, is that the reason they've completely blown multiple calls so far in the series? Where are Nuge, Hyman, Kane and Yamamoto. The lack of production from the Oilers top six wingers are absolutely killing them. Oilers fans are in full blown panic mode but this series is far from over.

The 13th installment of our Camp Clips series, Crown Refs is always looking for more high character individuals like Brandon who love officiating and would appreciate being a part of a special community of referees. Our program was built to get stronger with each new member we add. Montrell talks about why he enjoys being a part of the Crown Refs Mentor Community and how the program has developed him as an official. Jake was an official that we worked with long before Crown Refs and we appreciate his continued support and engagement in our community. He continues to greatly devlop each year and we ar excited for his ascension up the industry ladder. Roger Ayers talks about what a dream come true it was to officiate the Final Four game between Duke & UNC. Then we are back to signal school for tips on adding an additional layer of information on new directional points. As well as covering the best way to change your partner out of bounds call and also the best way to ask for help on an out-of-bounds play. We've all experienced the feeling of moving too fast on the basketball court both mentally and physically. Rushing only leads to mistakes in all walks of life and that's why it's essential to try and master the skills of patience and poise. In such a wildly emotional game we have to be the emotionally mature ones who are capable of being the bigger person at ALL times.

Kim Mulkey. Caitlin Clark. Ruined. In a highly anticipated women's basketball game between LSU and Iowa, the referees were the center of attention for all the wrong reasons. Several recent tweets highlighted just how poorly the officials performed during the game. One tweet noted that the refs were "letting way too much physical play go on," while another suggested that they were "missing obvious calls left and right." Fans were particularly upset with a non-call in the final moments of the game, which many felt cost LSU the victory. One user even went so far as to say that the refs were "actively ruining the game" and that they "should be ashamed of themselves." Others called for better training and accountability for officials at all levels of basketball. Despite the controversy, both teams played hard and gave it their all on the court. In the end, Iowa came out on top, but many fans were left feeling frustrated and disappointed with the officiating. As basketball season continues, it's clear that there is still much work to be done to improve the quality of officiating and ensure fair play for all teams involved. Support us! https://www.patreon.com/mlst MLST Discord: https://discord.gg/aNPkGUQtc5 In this podcast with the legendary Connor Leahy (CEO Conjecture) recorded in Dec 2022, we discuss various topics related to artificial intelligence (AI), including AI alignment, the success of ChatGPT, the potential threats of artificial general intelligence (AGI), and the challenges of balancing research and product development at his company, Conjecture. He emphasizes the importance of empathy, dehumanizing our thinking to avoid anthropomorphic biases, and the value of real-world experiences in learning and personal growth. The conversation also covers the Orthogonality Thesis, AI preferences, the mystery of mode collapse, and the paradox of AI alignment. Connor Leahy expresses concern about the rapid development of AI and the potential dangers it poses, especially as AI systems become more powerful and integrated into society. He argues that we need a better understanding of AI systems to ensure their safe and beneficial development. The discussion also touches on the concept of "futuristic whack-a-mole," where futurists predict potential AGI threats, and others try to come up with solutions for those specific scenarios. However, the problem lies in the fact that there could be many more scenarios that neither party can think of, especially when dealing with a system that's smarter than humans. https://www.linkedin.com/in/connor-j-leahy/https://twitter.com/NPCollapse Interviewer: Dr. Tim Scarfe (Innovation CTO @ XRAI Glass https://xrai.glass/) TOC: The success of ChatGPT and its impact on the AI field [00:00:00] Subjective experience [00:15:12] AI Architectural discussion including RLHF [00:18:04] The paradox of AI alignment and the future of AI in society [00:31:44] The impact of AI on society and politics [00:36:11] Future shock levels and the challenges of predicting the future [00:45:58] Long termism and existential risk [00:48:23] Consequentialism vs. deontology in rationalism [00:53:39] The Rationalist Community and its Challenges [01:07:37] AI Alignment and Conjecture [01:14:15] Orthogonality Thesis and AI Preferences [01:17:01] Challenges in AI Alignment [01:20:28] Mechanistic Interpretability in Neural Networks [01:24:54] Building Cleaner Neural Networks [01:31:36] Cognitive horizons / The problem with rapid AI development [01:34:52] Founding Conjecture and raising funds [01:39:36] Inefficiencies in the market and seizing opportunities [01:45:38] Charisma, authenticity, and leadership in startups [01:52:13] Autistic culture and empathy [01:55:26] Learning from real-world experiences [02:01:57] Technical empathy and transhumanism [02:07:18] Moral status and the limits of empathy [02:15:33] Anthropomorphic Thinking and Consequentialism [02:17:42] Conjecture: Balancing Research and Product Development [02:20:37] Epistemology Team at Conjecture [02:31:07] Interpretability and Deception in AGI [02:36:23] Futuristic whack-a-mole and predicting AGI threats [02:38:27] Refs: 1. Another night of NBA Basketball and another night of complaining about the refs. In Dallas, Mavs owner Mark Cuban filed a protest after the Mavs lost to the warriors by two points. Cuban feels the refs made a mistake in the 3rd quarter that led to an easy basket by the Warriors. In LA, Suns coach Monty Williams went on a post-game tirade about the refs after his team lost to the Lakers.
