The NLD did not go to plan for The Arsenal. High energy wasn't the problem. Is there such a thing as too high of energy? Was this the right attitude against a good counter-attacking team? The overriding theme is that the Ref absolutely trashed this London Classic. Playing aggressive to calling the ticky-tack (by Derby standards) was how injected himself into this match. Shame on The Prem and double shame on the Refs. Even though today was disappointing, Arsenal is still 1 point ahead of Tottenham with 2 to play. Finish the job, boys! #COYG --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/caughtintwominds/message

The Phoenix Suns sit tied with the Dallas Mavericks at two games apiece. The two losses in Dallas were not pretty, but they were also marred by atypical play and horrific officiating. And without placing "blame" on the referees, there's no doubt that they impacted both games significantly. But, more importantly, will all of this continue? We think not, and we (sans Paul) explain why on this episode of Fanning the Flames. Kaapo Kakko and Filip Chytil link up for what likely would have been a game-winning goal late in the third period, only to have it overturned in mind-boggling fashion. Breaking down the play from every conceivable angle. Though it's lost in the controversy, this was an absolutely PHENOMENAL play by Kaapo Kakko, who probably never would have made a play like this in his rookie season. If Sidney Crosby does what Kakko did, is this goal still overturned??? Why this type of win likely isn't repeatable for the Penguins and why the Rangers and their fans should feel great going into Game 2! Ryan Lindgren is banged up but expected to play in Game 2! Something the Rangers MUST (and probably will) do better going forward. Will there be any lineup changes on Thursday?? Thanking everyone who reached out to congratulate my wife and me on the birth of our beautiful daughter! Episode 588. Intro song is “Leave the Lights On” by Passafire. The Athletic Staff Writer Joshua Kloke joins Game Play to recap the Maple Leafs' dominant Game 1 victory against the Tampa Bay Lightning. Kloke shares his thoughts on why the Leafs were able to put forth such a complete effort against the defending champion Bolts, the referees from last night's game calling a multitude of penalties, Mitch Marner breaking his 18-game playoff goal-scoring drought, what to expect in Game 2, and more.
When it comes to NBA referees, especially in the postseason, it's hard not to think of that proverb about children: “They should be seen, and not heard.” But in recent days, NBA fans have been hearing plenty about the refs. Everyone from Draymond Green to Chris Paul to Joel Embiid have weighed in, frustrated by how the playoffs have been called. But in the eyes of NBA writer Ben Dowsett — our referee whisperer if you will — there's also a lot more to this fraught dynamic than meets the eye. Dowsett takes us inside the world of NBA officiating to show us why everyone is frustrated with them, whether or not the league's quest for accountability is doing anything…and why some teams are quietly redefining what it means to “work the refs.” Learn more about your ad choices. On this episode of The Cross-Check NHL Show, Jonathan Huberdeau has added his name to a crowded field of Hart Trophy hopefuls. Hosts Mary Clarke and Andrew Berkshire discuss where Huberdeau stacks up among this tough Hart Trophy field of Auston Matthews, Igor Shesterkin, Johnny Gaudreau, Connor McDavid, and others. Next, the Toronto Maple Leafs have enacted an odd policy of posting the names and pictures of their game's referees on the bench. Will this decision help them gain the trust and respect of officials like captain John Tavares says it will? Plus, as it stands, the Presidents' Trophy is currently meaningless as an award for the best regular season team in the NHL. Hosts Mary and Andrew then try to come up with ways to make the award mean something for teams after a grueling 82 game season. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! NOT!
