What permission slip do you want to be writing to yourself?   I've always said that I'm committed to keeping this podcast raw, real, and honest. So in this episode, let me share a little bit of a backstory behind my own permission slip that I had to give myself.   I launched this podcast without a real plan. I kept going at it… until I was going down a track of doing conversations I wasn't excited about. This was followed by the pandemic and family problems.   Before I knew it, I was out of alignment… and it started to feel like hard work.   I knew I had to allow myself to take a break and start doing things differently. It may have taken way longer, but sometimes, that's actually what we need. Enjoy the podcast? Subscribe and leave a 5-star review! Vanessa Shaw is the Founder & CEO of The Business Growth Academy. “Whether it's with money, health, or your mate, all relationships are internal,” says Jennifer Urezzio, Founder of Soul Language. For most of her life, Jennifer was living in a state of heartbreak. It wasn't until she began to heal herself that she realized her trauma had been affecting the way she viewed money. In today's episode, your host Vanessa Shaw and Jennifer sit down to discuss how to heal your broken relationship with money.    According to Jennifer, our relationship with money begins when we are very young. Whether we have small trauma or large trauma, any amount can have a devastating impact on our future. To truly fix our relationships with money, it is important to first heal our inner child. At the end of the day, all of our painful patterns can be reorganized and released, we just have to start within ourselves.     Tune into this episode of Get Rich Without Being a Bitch for a transparent conversation about money. Learn more about the importance of activating safety in your body, being honest with yourself, and healing your inner child so you can strengthen your relationship with divinity and rebuild a healthy relationship with money.     Quotes • “If you are a vessel of receiving, you have to figure out where that vessel is either leaking or not willing to be filled.” (08:40-08:52) • “Our relationship with money is really a reflection of how we feel about divinity. Which is, in a sense, how we feel about our essential nature. So when you heal that relationship, you heal everything.” (16:04-16:17) • “Shame is the lowest vibration there is. You actually require support to energetically move from shame to the next level.” (19:21-19:30) • “If you've had trauma around money, anytime it comes up, your instinct is to be safe.” (22:09-22:17) • “When you look at your money, this is not who you are, this is just based on choices.” (29:38-29:43)  • “Oftentimes people try to change the external without changing the internal. And then they have a little transformation, but they don't reach transcendence because it doesn't stick.” (31:24-31:34)   Links Connect with Jennifer Urezzio: Website: www.soullanguage.us   Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/jenniferurezzio Twitter: https://twitter.com/SoulLanguage   Follow Vanessa Shaw on Instagram   Vanessa Shaw on LinkedIn https://businessgrowthacademy.com/ Join The Million Dollar Group on Facebook    Podcast production and show notes provided by HiveCast.fm

“Joy is a baseline of you deciding how you're going to live,'' says Shannon Hernandez, Business Growth Strategist. After a long career of teaching, Shannon realized that her life contained little to no joy. Desperate for a change, Shannon quit her teaching job to pursue her passion. Today, Shannon is the Founder of Joyful Business Revolution where she is committed to teaching women how to find joy in both their personal and professional lives.    According to Shannon, most people mistakenly believe that happiness and joy are the same things. While both are associated with positive experiences, happiness is an emotion whereas joy is how you choose to structure your life. To begin finding joy, Shannon explains that we must use our values to drive our decisions. When we are making choices that coincide with our beliefs, we will be more joyous and successful in everything we do.    Tune into this week's episode of Get Rich Without Being a Bitch to learn the importance of determining your values, implementing daily practices of joy, and building a business that gives back so you can find joy in every aspect of your life.    Quotes • “The vision we have at Joyful Business Revolution is to help women understand how to be profitable from the very beginning with the intention of being able to be a humanitarian.” (04:35-04:45) • “Happiness is determined by an emotion that is caused by an external event or a person or a thought, whereas joy is a baseline of you deciding how you're going to live.” (12:32-12:44)  • “How you get to your joy is by looking at your lifestyle values and what you value right now.” (15:52-15:57) • “Once we know your lifestyle values, we can start filtering every single decision through those values.” (18:42-18:48) • “If people don't know what you appreciate about them or what they do that brings you joy, we don't give them the opportunity to be joy givers in our lives.” (25:12-25:27) • “Early on I realized if my mind is right and I'm serving people, I'm going to make money.” (29:24-29:30) • “If you're paying yourself, you're paying your team and you're profitable, then you should set your prices with the intention that you're going to give from the beginning so you can give seamlessly as your business grows.” (37:54-38:07)   Links Connect with Shannon Hernandez:   Website: www.joyfulbusinessrevolution.com Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/mshannonhernandez Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/MShannonHernandezContentStrategist' The Joyful Business Revolution FB group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1545554722411966   Follow Vanessa Shaw on Instagram   Vanessa Shaw on LinkedIn https://businessgrowthacademy.com/ Join The Million Dollar Group on Facebook    Podcast production and show notes provided by HiveCast.fm

For as long as she could remember, Nikole Stanfield was addicted to being busy. It wasn't until a few years into her career that Nikole began to experience the negative effects of working too hard. After scaling back her workload, Nikole realized that she was experiencing something many entrepreneurs do: burnout. Today, Nikole shares her story with other entrepreneurs in hope of teaching them how to be successful in their businesses without feeling like they have to put their happiness and health at risk.    When people think about being an entrepreneur, they dream of a life filled with freedom. While being an entrepreneur in America has many perks, the culture surrounding productivity can sometimes be toxic and detrimental to the wellbeing of the business owner. Nikole explains that when we neglect ourselves, we will have nothing left to give and our businesses will suffer. So to increase productivity and prevent burnout, it is crucial that every entrepreneur is intentional about implementing daily routines of self-care.    Tune into this week's episode of Get Rich Without Being a Bitch to learn more about the importance of implementing mindfulness and self-care into your daily routine so you can continue doing what you love without feeling burnt out.    Quotes • “One of the most important things that I had to learn was that my needs are important too, and I need to take care of myself because if I don't, then I don't have a business.” (09:55-10:07) • “The clinical definition of burnout is that you are tired, and you have a lack of energy, meaning, and confidence in your life.” (13:49-13:59) • “When I burned out, what happened was that I stopped listening to my own needs.” (17:21-17:26) • “I want to encourage people to shift the paradigm and realize that self-care is something that you do daily for just 15 minutes. It doesn't have to be a huge commitment.” (31:47-31:57)  • “When you're struggling with how to bring more joy and self-care into your life, think about something that brings a smile to your face and figure out how you can incorporate more of that into your day.” (32:58-33:11) • “A lot of times, the things that fill us up are not the things we're spending our time on. So getting support to shift that is a small step you can take.” (39:40-39:50) • “I don't think we have to be in burnout to be successful.” (41:29-41:31)   Links Connect with Nikole Stanfield: Website:  https://www.myintuitioncoach.com/ LinkedIn:  https://www.linkedin.com/in/nikolestanfield/   Follow Vanessa Shaw on Instagram   Vanessa Shaw on LinkedIn https://businessgrowthacademy.com/ Join The Million Dollar Group on Facebook    Podcast production and show notes provided by HiveCast.fm

Now, Isabel is happier than ever running her own practice where she has fully embraced the role of CEO. In today's episode, Isabel sits down with host Vanessa Shaw to discuss how she became comfortable with owning her value and charging her clients for what her services are worth. When Isabel first opened her practice, she thought she was automatically given the role of CEO, but quickly realized this wasn't true. Instead, she quickly learned that in order to grow and scale her business, she needed to spend more time on business development and less time working contracts. After hiring Vanessa as her business coach, Isabel grew the confidence she needed to bring on another attorney. To her surprise, this decision has allowed her to attract ideal clients and cultivate her business into the practice of her dreams.  Tune into this episode of Get Rich Without Being a Bitch to learn more about the true definition of CEO, the importance of hiring a business coach, and how to step into your confidence, so you can take charge in your business and in life.    Quotes  • “Believing that success points are not a fluke has been such an important part of the growth of the business.” (08:48-08:56) • “I had always thought if you started a business, you are automatically a CEO. If you are the only technician in the business or you're doing a lot of the technical work, you're really not functioning as the CEO.” (24:14-24:32) • “A huge part of giving myself that promotion to truly being CEO was to hire.” (25:01-25:06)  • “I decided to bet on myself and believe that my time was better spent doing business development than working on contracts.” (28:47-28:55) • “Now more than ever, we say no, and I definitely don't compete on price and I'm very open about that with clients, because I've become so clear on the value proposition with the firm.” (34:04- 34:15) • “A key investment for sure is having a coach and investing in a team. Today, Shoshanna coaches a variety of clients on how to cultivate successful leadership through the practice of intuition. As a business owner, you most likely remember the moments when you felt the most inspired. Rather than being intimidated by these moments, it is important to dive deep into them. Do you automatically get defensive when a sales person tries to sell you a product? If your answer is yes, then you are not alone. Connie Whitman, CEO of Whitman & Associates, LLC, has been in sales for almost 40 years and is actively trying to change this negative narrative of salespeople. Instead of seeing sales as manipulative or sleazy, Connie and her team are remodeling sales into an experience of service with care, love, and respect.  Connie shares one of the most prominent problems in the sales industry: buyer resistance. Buyer resistance is a potential buyers' hesitation towards purchasing the product or listening to the salesperson's pitch about said product. Every salesperson experiences this during their career, but where does it come from? Connie suggests that the origin of buyer resistance today comes from movie tropes about aggressive salespeople forcing you into buying a product as shown in the 2013 hit drama, Wolf of Wall Street. Connie hopes to break down buyer resistance with her sales remodeling strategy that includes treating her clients with compassion and appreciation.  Tune into this week's episode of Get Rich Without Being a Bitch for a conversation with Connie Whitman about her journey to recreate the mainstream sales approach. Learn more about the 5 layers of buyer resistance, why punctuality is a deal breaker, and how to tackle the questions that no one else is asking.    Quotes • “The danger is that we all have buyer's resistance.” (04:28-04:33)  • “So, changing the sales game. It's a game right? And I don't mean that there's got to be a winner and a loser. For me in my game, everybody wins. Everybody walks away with something, right?” (14:13-14:23)  • “I will not work with clients that don't respect me. I have way too much respect for myself.” (19:48-19:54)  • “The more you give, the more you get. Now, Dana is a Business Performance Coach and author, who educates people using her lived experiences and links the lessons she learned from the dungeon to the business world. Dana opens up to listeners about her reasons for leaving the cult. She explains that she had a repulsion for what the cult leaders were preaching and that their values did not resonate with her own. Dana highlights the importance of immersing yourself in something before giving up on it. At 16, Dana was baptized and fully committed herself to the cult in order to confirm her suspicions that its belief system did not align with her personal life path. Dana's eventual decision to leave the cult allowed her to experience the eye-opening world of BDSM. I didn't feel like I had a voice, I didn't feel like I had the right to ask for what I wanted, and so that space of getting into that world was so vital for me. She is passionate about teaching women how to rewrite their money scripts, so they can achieve financial freedom of their own. In today's episode, Courtney sits down with host Vanessa Shaw to make seemingly complex topics such as personal finances, debt, and investments more approachable.   For example, Courtney explains that investing often seems more complicated than it is due to the abundance of information available. A quick Google search will yield millions of results, each advertising different suggestions about how and where to invest. According to Courtney, most of the information out there is untrue, especially the myth that investing is only for people with money. Investing is an option for anyone, no matter their economic status or educational background! But before you go to open an investment account you must do two things: pay off any high-interest debt and create sustainable spending plans that support both your long-term and short-term goals.   Tune into this week's episode of Get Rich Without Being a Bitch for a conversation with Courtney about opening more doors to financial representation for women.  Learn more about the steps you need to take to invest wisely, how to initiate open conversations about finances with your partner, and how you can enjoy your money both now and in the future!   Quotes • “Women need more representation and they need to feel heard and to be able to have a seat at the table, and that is my passion and my mission.” (04:36-04:47) • “Only 10% of our conscious mind interacts with us daily and 90% is subconscious. Our money beliefs are in that 90% subconscious, so you have to work very hard to break those bad cycles.”  (06:50- 07:07)  • “Make sure you're maxing out your retirement accounts that are tax-advantaged. Meaning you contribute the money prior to paying taxes, that way you're saving money on your taxes and you're also investing funds. It's like a double whammy!”  (11:46- 11:58)  • “Making sure you have eliminated all high-interest debt prior to investing is really critical because it is going to do you more good to eliminate that debt than investing into the market would.” (15:30- 15:41)  • “We need to enjoy our money now and in the future, and you absolutely can do both.” (24:45-24:49)   Links Connect with Courtney Dyer: Email: financiallyfreejourneypodcast@gmail.com  Website: https://www.financiallyfreejourney.com/  Social Media Handles: @financiallyfreejourney   Follow Vanessa Shaw on Instagram   Vanessa Shaw on LinkedIn https://businessgrowthacademy.com/ Join The Million Dollar Group on Facebook   Podcast production and show notes provided by FIRESIDE Marketing

As a young woman, she promised herself she would reach a point where she would have total freedom to purchase and enjoy the things she wanted. Yet, when Christy finally reached the point where she could buy her dream purse, a nagging voice in her head told her, “That is so materialistic.” So, where was that voice coming from? Why did it feel “wrong” to enjoy something that served as a symbol of how far Christy had come in her life?    It was this a-ha moment that served as Christy's inspiration for her latest book The Desire Factor, in which she shows readers how to bring any desire into physical form without guilt. According to Christy, there is no limit to the amount of happiness we can experience, since the universe has the capability to bring whatever we desire to fruition. While many of us may have been taught to experience shame around feelings of desire, these desires are there for a reason, as they connect us to our divine selves!   Tune into this episode of Get Rich Without Being a Bitch for a conversation with Christy Whitman about the spiritual power of desire. Look who I became in the process!'” (7:22-7:34) “Having money is not the end all, be all. It's the feeling that money gives, the freedom, the security, the choices, the options. You get to be free to walk into a store if you want to or to give generously to a nonprofit. There's so many ways you can use money for yourself, but if we close off, we are closing off the opportunity to also give.” (14:04- 14:28)  “Greed is the root of all evil, not money.” (16:22-16:24)  “Those deep desires of wanting to have impact and create change are soul desires, and you cannot deny those because that will cause you to suffer.” (22:18- 22:30)   Links Connect with Christy Whitman: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/christywhitmaninternational/  Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/christywhitman1/  Website: https://christywhitman.com/    Follow Vanessa Shaw on Instagram   Vanessa Shaw on LinkedIn https://businessgrowthacademy.com/ Join The Million Dollar Group on Facebook    Podcast production and show notes provided by FIRESIDE Marketing

Tune into this week's episode of Get Rich Without Being a Bitch for a conversation with Brooke Lively about her own entrepreneurial journey and it can inform YOUR successes. Learn how Brooke took her business from broke to booming and why holding onto the vision of what you want to create is key. Most importantly, get a behind-the-scenes deep dive into Brooke's 6 Key Numbers® and how they can dramatically alter the trajectory of your business for the better. Quotes • “What we ended up doing was coming up with the 6 Key Numbers. And they are the 6 Key Numbers that if you have your finger on those six things, then you have your finger on the pulse of your business.” (5:04-5:17) • “One of my lowest points came when I applied for a credit card, it had a whopping $900 limit, and I waited for it desperately every single day.”  (8:42-8:58) • “When you own a business it can be scary, and you're going to run into...terror barriers. And what you want is on the other side of that terror barrier, and you've got to get through it. And there are four ways to do that….The one you really want to do is holding that vision because that vision is like armor. If you can see it, touch it, smell it, feel it, if you know exactly what it's like, it is like a bubble that will let you walk through fire.” (10:40-11:45) • “Instead of being panicked, instead of being reactive, all of these numbers are about helping you become proactive. And with the proactive, you make better decisions, especially when decisions are based on data.” (31:22-31:37)  • “Budgets suck. Nobody likes a budget: they're awful, they're restrictive, and as entrepreneurs, we're all about the possibility, not the prohibition.” (34:58-35:08) • “Cut yourself some slack. All we're looking for is to suck less next month.” (37:47-37:52) • “If our owners are not making enough money, they are not going to be making good decisions in the business. We have to get our owners stable at home, so that then we can get the business really stable.”  (42:30-42:48) Links To learn more about Brooke Lively, visit: www.cathcap.com  Follow Vanessa Shaw on Instagram   Vanessa Shaw on LinkedIn https://businessgrowthacademy.com/ Join The Million Dollar Group on Facebook  Podcast production and show notes provided by FIRESIDE Marketing

“I fundamentally believe that if you have a story or a skillset that can make someone's life better, it's your obligation as a person to share that,” says Whitney McDuff, PR Strategist, Speaker and Founder of Whitney McDuff Consulting. As a PR consultant, Whitney has worked with her fair share of clients whose lack of confidence holds them back. Whitney excels in helping these individuals implement simple yet impactful branding strategies, so they can realize their full potential and share their gifts with the world.    Whitney first started her consulting business as a side hustle, but it quickly became a full-time gig. While many entrepreneurs struggle to find clients, Whitney had the opposite problem: her client base was growing far quicker than she could keep up with it. On the brink of burnout, she enlisted Vanessa to help her repackage her offerings and establish better boundaries. By taking this step, she gained more time, she rediscovered the joy in her work and her business exploded!   Tune into this week's episode of Get Rich Without Being a Bitch for a conversation with Whitney about the power of PR and owning your value. Learn about the importance of pitching to people not publications, how to repurpose your content for a greater impact and why surrounding yourself with people who are where you want to be is the key to long-term success. Most importantly, learn why PR doesn't have to be complex, expensive and inaccessible; in fact, it's often the simplest solutions that yield the greatest results.   Quotes • “When you start running your own business, there is some radical accountability and responsibility that comes with that because you're it. Every success is yours, every failure is yours, there's no one else to blame, there's no one else to shoulder that with.” (4:59-5:12) • “It was really coming to a point...where it was all good things that were happening, so I felt almost a little bit guilty, feeling bad for needing help. I don't know if that's just a thing that women go through; it's a terrible habit that we have. But everything was starting to suffer. My health couldn't maintain that, my mind couldn't maintain that. I was just really starting to reach a point where I was about to hit burnout.” (8:15-8:46) • “I'm saying that I value self-care, I value my family, I value my friends, I value all of these things, but my calendar was absolutely not reflecting that.” (11:00-11:10) • “We have so much access to information now….Now, you can see what everyone in your world is doing all the time, and it causes a lot of, ‘Am I good enough to do this? Do I have a story worth telling?'....And the reason my company started was because I fundamentally believe that if you have a story or a skillset that can make someone's life better, I think it's your obligation as a person to share that.” (19:50-20:16) • “Always think about what's going on, what are people already talking about, what is the need that you're solving and the story that you're telling that's going to help shift someone's life and make it better. That's what we always want to think about in a pitch.” (25:20-25:33) • “Sometimes it just takes the right moment, the right mindset and the right message to really change someone's life. So reshare your content! Because you have new people that haven't seen it or maybe the way that you address it in the second pitch resonates with someone.” (36:23-36:39)   Links To learn more about Whitney McDuff, visit: https://thepowerofproteus.com/    Follow Vanessa Shaw on Instagram   Vanessa Shaw on LinkedIn https://businessgrowthacademy.com/ Join The Million Dollar Group on Facebook    Podcast production and show notes provided by FIRESIDE Marketing

Everyone Has Money Blocks, Even Financial Coaches!

“Money affects all parts of our life if we don’t have a handle on it,” says Kelsa Dickey, CEO & Founder of Fiscal Fitness. Kelsa has made it her life mission to help people get control over their finances, so they can lead more fulfilling and healthier lives. Kelsa learned from her parents that your level of life satisfaction is less connected to how much money you make than it is how you choose to spend it. While her mother was frugal and perpetually stressed about funds, her father spent liberally on things that were deemed “popular” and “trendy.” At the end of the day, neither of her parents was truly fulfilled. Kelsa admits that she, too, has undergone her fair share of money blocks while building her company to its current level of success. For example, the belief that making too much money in her business would make her kids entitled initially prevented her from reaching her full potential. However, Kelsa has since come to understand the strength of her personal values, which have informed how she chooses to spend her money, how she runs her business, and how she interacts with her family. In fact, a few years ago, she and her husband created the “Dickey Family Creed,” which reminds them and their two daughters to embody their fundamental values no matter what the situation. Tune into this week’s episode of Get Rich Without Being a Bitch to learn more about Kelsa’s perspective on what it means to live richly and how she incorporates this outlook into her own life. Plus, you won’t want to miss out on hearing Kelsa’s “Dickey Family Creed,” which may inform how you and your family choose to keep sight of your morals through thick and thin! Join Kelsa and host Vanessa Shaw to learn more about creating the life you truly want to live. Quotes “Money affects all parts of our life if we don’t have a handle on it. And so, I wanted to help people get control of their money, so that they could actually focus and give their attention to things that really matter in life.” (3:46-3:59) “Money by itself is not the most important thing. You can have millions of dollars and be miserable….If you, however, have money and are being intentional with it and you are using it in a way that brings you more fulfillment in life and putting it behind what’s most important to you...then it can actually boost your satisfaction overall. It can actually be a tool that helps you accomplish your dreams and live your life exactly as you want to as opposed to not having tons of options.” (5:17-5:53) ”I don’t think that the way business works is that it’s ‘learn and then do.’ I think that it’s ‘do and then learn.’” (12:15-12:21) “Your stress or your satisfaction in your life with money is not actually connected to how much you’re making. It’s connected to how you are spending it.”  (18:39-18:48) “I am a financial coach, I do this work for a living, and I have money blocks, too….Mine was that if I make too much money in my business, then my children will grow up spoiled, entitled, not nice kids.” (29:39-30:02) “As one control enthusiast to another...done is better than perfect because I think if we’re so focused on it being perfect, you will not get your dream out there. “The rise in women philanthropy is now,” says Jarrett Ransom, CEO and Founder of the Rayvan Group. As a self-proclaimed Non-profit Nerd, Jarrett is a powerhouse strategist for major non-profit organizations. But her story wasn’t always so rosy. Jarrett’s giving spirit comes, in part, from the fact that once was a single mom in need of financial support.  In 2009, Jarrett worked for a major non-profit with a $21 million operating budget. But the financial crisis hit hard - she had to lay off her entire team, and then she got laid off six months later. Soon after she found out she was pregnant. Jarrett launched her own business to support her new family, but she was struggling. She had to go on food stamps and government support. Then one day, in the grocery store, her mindset shifted. She decided she wouldn’t be a victim of her fate. She would survive this.  Since then, Jarrett has worked hard with many coaches, including Vannessa, to change her money story, and help her business thrive. Now, as her business continues to grow, she loves nothing more than seeing women in philanthropy put their money, time, and talents into organizations they love.    Quotes: “Our childhood plays a really big role in our stories.” “I found myself, about ten years ago now, really at rock bottom with finances, with confidence, with clarity, with self-esteem, you name it. I was just not at the top of my game. I did find myself on food stamps and every other government support that exists.” (6:27-6:48)  Links: https://therayvangroup.com/    Follow Vanessa Shaw on Instagram   Vanessa Shaw on LinkedIn https://businessgrowthacademy.com/ Join The Million Dollar Group on Facebook    Podcast production and show notes provided by FIRESIDE Marketing

“Your story is a story,” says Jen Cokken, coach and imposter syndrome expert. Jen has spent her career helping people identify the moments when their stories about themselves limit their performance at work and in life. And the primary source of those faulty stories? Imposter syndrome.  Imposter syndrome is a struggle that more than 70% of people struggle with. It’s the idea that we don’t deserve the success that we have -- that somehow, we aren’t actually the right person for the job. The root of imposter syndrome is often shame and embarrassment, and it usually can be traced back to moments early in our lives. But when we continue to act based on the flawed idea that we are imposters, we are letting our inner hurt child run the show.  From perfectionism to being unable to advocate for ourselves, this episode of Get Rich Without Being a Bitch exposes the many ways imposter syndrome can rear its ugly head -- and what we can do about it.    Quotes: They estimate that 70% of all people suffer from it. I, having been a coach for so long and coached people, from high school students to members of congress, and everyone I come across has some form of imposter syndrome. And I say that if you don’t have some form of it, you’re not stretching yourself enough. You’re not not risking yourself enough. In this frank conversation with host Vannessa Shaw, Sarah talks about how she went from a failing business to a million-dollar practice in the span of just a year -- and in the middle of the pandemic.  In February 2020, Sarah and Vannessa had a difficult phone call. Sarah’s business plan was fundamentally flawed. She had maxed out her credit cards, her business and personal lines of credit, and had even taken $80k out of her own retirement fund -- all while not paying herself a living wage. But that phone call sparked a dramatic change in Sarah’s outlook. She knew she needed to make changes to her business, but that wasn’t it. She also needed to change her mindset - starting with how she viewed herself and her role in the company.  From a woman who struggled to call herself the CEO to a multi-million dollar business owner who is thriving during COVID while providing top-notch speech therapy services to children and their families, Sarah is proof that mindset can make all the difference. Tune in this week to hear Sarah’s story, and the lessons she learned along the way from a supportive community of female entrepreneurs.   Quote: "I had huge guilt. “How do creative people make decisions?” This is the question that Sam Bennett, speaker and best-selling author seeks to uncover in her work as a career and life coach for creatives. Sam defines herself as an accidental entrepreneur - she fell into her work when she realized how many sensitive, creative people like her needed guidance to find the right path. She helps highly creative people tune into what they want to do, and get that work into the world. Though our predominant cultural message is “You can’t make money doing what you love,” Sam has made a living proving otherwise. For Sam, creative doesn’t mean artistic. Being creative is a natural interest, adeptness, or ability to solve problems in a certain area -- you can be creative as a plumber, a designer, or a database architect. Sam talks with host Vanessa Shaw about valuing your work, both emotionally and financially, and how her own struggle with depression and anxiety shaped her business and her corporate policies. She insists on the healing power of self care - whether that means sweating it out at the gym or buying an expensive pair of shoes that make you feel powerful. At the end of the day, she reminds us, “You are the engine pulling that train.”Quotes: “I started to succeed fairly early, mostly because I didn't know it was supposed to be hard.” (3:35)“Undercharging is a lie. “Here’s what I’m worth, here’s what I demand.” These are words that many women struggle to say - and that’s the subject of today’s real and raw conversation about women and money with Pamela Brooks, Organizational Development Consultant at Arizona State University. As a human performance specialist, Pamela studies how to help people and organizations reach their full potential. In this chat, she focuses on the research behind women, money, and performance. Pamela’s childhood experiences with money had nothing to do with growth potential. She was raised by hard-working parents without college degrees who taught her to pay cash, avoid debt, and ignore the divide between the “haves” and the “have-nots.” In her career, Pamela struggled to step up and ask for what she was worth -- and it wasn’t until she realized what a difference it made for other women that she began demanding higher pay. In a study about pay negotiation at Stanford, Penn State, and Harvard, women often had more advanced degrees and experience, but didn't ask for more money, while men consistently asked for higher pay. Why is this? Pamela dives into the emotions and logic that play into pay gaps, including fear of judgement from other women around asking for higher salaries.Pamela reminds us that it’s about more than just our own paychecks: “If you don’t demand what you’re worth, it’s going to make it harder for every female that comes after you.” Tune in to hear the real deal about women, money, and knowing your worth. Quotes: “Here’s what I’m worth, here’s what I demand.” (6:15-6:18)“If you don’t demand what you’re worth, it’s going to make it harder for every female that comes after you” (7:20-7:25)“With that lack of confidence and that fear, we pull ourselves away from the support we need to become larger.”“It doesn't matter what path we’ve taken in our careers, when we get to a certain point, we’re worth the same amount.”Links: Follow Vanessa Shaw on Instagram  Vanessa Shaw on LinkedInJoin The Million Dollar Group on Facebook Podcast production and show notes provided by FIRESIDE Marketing

“I grew up believing getting ahead meant marrying well.” Vanessa Shaw’s origin story might sound familiar. As a young girl, she had many unanswered questions about money, and little understanding of what options existed for her beyond being a mother and housewife. In the math classroom, she had an old-fashioned teacher that shamed her for asking questions -- which led to a lifelong aversion to math and financial statements, even after she started her own business.  With few female role models and an aversion to conversations about money, Vanessa soon found herself in a crisis when a major account ended and her accountant called her into the office to warn her of impending bankruptcy.  “Nothing will change until you change.” Vanessa brings us to the lowest point in her career -- the moment when she lost a big contract, and more than 85% of her income. The shame she felt in this moment made her realize that something needed to change - and it had to start with her.  Vanessa hired a coach, educated herself, and changed her mindset. Along the way, she discovered that she wasn’t alone. In fact, many women shared the same challenges. With so many struggling female entrepreneurs, Vanessa saw an opportunity to make a difference, and  The Business Growth Academy was born. Links:The Business Growth Academy Website:https://businessgrowthacademy.com/ Vanessa Shaw on LinkedInhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/vcshaw/ Join The Million Dollar Group on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/groups/TheMillionDollarGroup/ Podcast production and show notes provided by FIRESIDE Marketinghttps://meetfireside.com/podcast-production/
