On today's episode of The No Limits Selling Podcast, we have Connie Whitman, a sales coach and the author of the #1 International Best Selling Book - ESP, Easy Sales Process.During her 20+ years in business, She's had the honor of working with very large organizations, including what became the #1 ranked bank in NJ by Money Magazine, to very small companies including solopreneurs, and she has found that a clear sales process, with a defined client journey, is the same in the principle regardless of size.In this candid conversation between sales performance expert Umar Hameed and veteran sales trainer Connie Whitman, the duo cuts through conventional wisdom to reveal what truly separates sales superstars from the pack. Drawing on decades of experience coaching thousands of sales professionals, they argue that mindset—not just technique—is the critical difference between mediocrity and excellence. The discussion offers readers a rare glimpse into the psychological barriers that keep competent salespeople from greatness, from the reluctance to call prospects to the surprising ways our colleagues can sabotage our performance. Through illuminating anecdotes, including Whitman's own brush with imposter syndrome before a video interview and Hameed's psychological breakthrough with a realtor losing $27,000 commissions, they demonstrate how minor mental adjustments can transform results overnight. For sales leaders looking to elevate their middle performers and sales professionals seeking an edge in today's market, this conversation provides three actionable principles to reframe fear, communicate more effectively, and develop the discipline that separates the exceptional from the merely good.Find Connie Whitman:Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/conniewhitman/[EDITOR'S NOTE: This podcast is sponsored by No Limits Selling. “Great things are done by a series of small things done together” – Vincent van Gogh. In other words, we must create a system of small tasks and habits and string them together to achieve sustainable results quickly. What sales system do you use, if you have one at all? I just had a conversation with someone about sales from a mindset perspective. No judgment: salespeople face an inner game, and our mindset or inner dialog can be a catalyst or a log jam for sales success. So, in addition to mindset, all salespeople need to create a tangible, duplicatable sales system that can be taught and repeated so we can better predict sales results, our return on time, and money spent on sales activities. Accountability To Improve Sales Success with Connie Whitman (episode 365) "Accountability, the ability of people to understand what is expected of them, exercise authority, and take responsibility for delivering results, is an important dimension of organizational health." – Michael Bazigos What does accountability mean to you? I remember my first client from 25 years ago. We were creating a dynamic client journey culture focusing on being a community partner, new business development, and career growth within the company. After 2 years of working to build this culture, we were approaching the end of my work with them. During the two years, we created rinse-and-repeat sales and business development processes. We implemented tools to measure and reports for leaders to evaluate and leverage for effective coaching conversations. I met with the COO to discuss how he could continue to support the momentum and changes we had made in his marketplace using clear goals, coaching, and other measurements that his managers had embraced and loved using. He looked at me and said, “Well, I'm not going to assign goals because then we become pushy salespeople versus customer service.” Listen to the show to see how my crazy story ends! “Don't be afraid to give up the good for the great.” — John D. Rockefeller. The most significant areas where I see salespeople and sales teams drop the ball are at the beginning and end of the sales process. Step 1 is preparation at the beginning of the sales process. To put this in perspective, when we are doing our external business development efforts, 90% of successful BD is preparation. Yes, 90%. What I see with the teams I work with is that they feel so busy that they forfeit prep time and go out and wing it. In a recent survey - 82% of decision-makers (prospective clients) feel that the salespeople they deal with must prepare for the sales calls and show up ill-prepared. Interestingly, we cannot afford to show up unprepared and skip the extra work beforehand. When we prepare, the process accelerates, the prospect or client is more likely to say yes, and we feel a surge of confidence. It's like a flow of energy that makes everything seem effortless. Let me share what I feel should be prepared before any sales conversations or efforts occur. “As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them.” – John F. Kennedy. Recently, I have been working with several banks across the US. In Step 2 of my sales process, I teach how to authentically and organically build rapport with clients and prospects and at networking events. I created a template and am working on another AI tool (more to come on that in the future) that I share with the people in the class to create a dynamic Value Statement to use in various venues and situations. At the top of the worksheet, I ask everyone to write some fun facts about themselves and then fun facts about their organization. Most people find this exercise challenging to share fun facts about themselves and ultimately create a VS that is predominately about the organization because we are taught how to play small and how not to brag or appear arrogant. The reality is that a strong Value Statement should reflect the cool and unique things about you. People do business with people they know, like, and trust, yet we give that power by bragging about our organization. “Governing is about making tough decisions, but it's also about figuring out a better way to do things.” – Mike DeVine. So, I am mixing things up and doing a solo show! Recently my husband and I watched a movie produced by Ron Howard called Hillbilly Elegy, a very honest memoir about JD Vance. I promise this is not a political show, and it doesn't matter which side of the aisle you sit in politics. This movie is about living the American dream when all the odds are against you. It's a must-see, and I believe our kids should watch it. Here are a couple of points I took away from the movie: I often hear from people I work with that they feel they have no option but to stay in a job or a relationship that doesn't make them shine or feel alive. Because they have a mortgage, rent, kids, college, and the list goes on as to why they can't make a change. By not making a choice, you are choosing not to act, but it is a choice, just the same. Our ego and reptilian brain try to keep us safe, but to what end? I challenge you to watch the movie and see how Ron Howard shows the pivotal moments of change and choice through JD's reflections and memories of the past. “Balance is not better time management, but better boundary management. Balance means making choices and enjoying those choices.” – Betsy Jacobson. Lately, many people in their 30s have asked me how I was able to start a business, raise my two boys (who played travel hockey from the age of 5), and maintain a marriage for 32 years. The short answer is that I just put one foot in front of the other. Truly, there was no master's plan when I was in my 30s, knowing how to create a wonderful business and life. I've learned to set clear boundaries with every choice, but that has come over time. This is why I chose this quote for today. It always boils down to boundaries and choices. We are the only ones who can control our future, so setting clear boundaries that you can live with is crucial. Connie's motivational quote today is by Stephen Covey “Our character is basically a composite of our habits. Because they are consistent, often unconscious patterns, they constantly, daily, express our character.” Do you have any bad habits? Come on, you know what I am talking about! If we know what is considered a good versus a bad habit, why do we have so many darn bad habits? Most of us have tried to loose weight, get in better shape by going to the gym every day, eat healthier, stop smoking, and the list goes on and on. So if we know what make a habit good or bad, why do we still have so many that often seem to be out of control. What if I told you there is an almost foolproof way to really change up your behavior patterns - Do I have your attention?? Is this even possible? Today your host, Connie Whitman, speaks with James Clear. James and I are going to discuss his new book Atomic Habits: An Easy & Proven Way to Build Good Habits & Break Bad Ones. We are going to break down how to actually change or form a habit that will stick. YouTube: https://youtu.be/U4gQdWZpWQs About James Clear James Clear is a writer and speaker focused on habits, decision-making, and continuous improvement. Sales Game Changers | Tip-Filled Conversations with Sales Leaders About Their Successful Careers
This is episode 555. Read the complete transcription on the Sales Game Changers Podcast website. CONNIE'S TIP: “Become a Pitbull when it comes to follow up. My follow up is called CPR, keeping the client alive. It's consistent, persistent, the big word, respectful follow up. You got to do the follow ups. Two percent of successful salespeople follow up past the 13th touch. Just think about those numbers. Most salespeople stop around the 5th. You're leaving so much money on the table, so much opportunity and so many referrals that you could be getting.”

“You've got to slow down to speed up sometimes.” — Connie Whitman Connie Whitman strongly believes that her family, business and basically loving what she does every day is the center stone of living a healthy and productive lifestyle. One of the things she realized over time is that her success could have been amplified if she had slowed down and rested more in her younger years, possibly resulting in higher energy levels as she aged. It is important to find something that works for you that you can perform “mindlessly” so it does not entirely deplete your energy or affect your mood negatively. In this episode, the impact of Communication on Wellness is discussed. A good conversation should always come from a place of love, care, respect, and most especially, accepting the person for what they are. Be present in conversations by taking control of yourself and listening. Moreover, Connie explained her communication model where different aspects in life are assessed. She believes that when you understand the communication style of a person, you're delivering it exactly how they need to receive it. Wellness Nuggets: ● How to slow down: meditate, read, word search ● Facebook sometimes instills compare phobia ● Be present in the daily moments of life ● Humans only have 6-second attention span We invite you to ignite the Wellness Warrior in YOU! Your individual experience is a business asset. Life is teaching us more than we sometimes realize. An insightful analysis of what we've experienced, combined with purposeful translation, can generate unique intellectual property on which to base a unique approach to business. Connie Whitman joins Economics For Business to share her experience and her development of a thriving, resilient, and adaptive coaching and training service. Key Takeaways and Actionable Insights Experience is an asset that reveals our business superpowers. Life teaches us whether we fully realize it or not. While climbing the job ladder at a firm may seem like the pursuit of credentials and titles, it's better understood as an accumulation of knowledge and learning that can be applied in the future in entrepreneurship. Connie Whitman enjoyed a 20-year career in financial services up to the SVP level. It was her customers who pointed out to her what “superpowers” she was developing — a distinctive capacity to assist all parties in a complex collaborative contract to fully understand the benefits accruing to each one of them individually and all of them collectively. We all can have these superpowers, but we don't always realize them until a third party points them out, through asking for input or advice or seeking us out or praising us. It's important to learn the right kind of self-assessment — and to learn to listen to others' assessment of us — so as to be able to understand our own superpowers. We can translate our experience into intellectual property that forms the basis for an entrepreneurial business. Connie Whitman transformed her experience into both a brand philosophy and a scalable methodology. Connie knew from her experience in business that the function entitled “sales” is often viewed negatively: sales activities and salespeople might be accused of rapaciousness and avarice, however unjustified such accusations may be. She intended to develop a service in coaching and training in the sales field, and so it was important to distance herself from these misperceptions. Her counter was selling from a place of love: relationship selling based on love, respect, and integrity. Selling is the construction of an “everybody wins” proposition. It's an honorable implementation of the entrepreneur's ethic of service. Anyone using Connie's techniques would evoke for themselves a feeling of pride and self-respect that the critics of the sales function try to deny. She crafted a methodology for selling from a place of love in the form of a seven-step selling process. It is replete with Austrian principles of subjectiveness, empathy, and customer sovereignty. Preparedness: Planning in advance to assemble all the knowledge and understanding available to make you informed and ready; anticipating what the customer will want to know and is likely to ask. Connecting: Using empathy to connect on the basis of what's important to the customer in order to establish credibility. Exploring: Asking questions to learn as much as possible about the customer's needs and preferences in the context of their current circumstances. Active Listening: Connie's phrase is “be present” — listen intently and indicate that you have heard accurately by asking follow up questions to further explore customer needs. Presenting Solutions: Framing all value propositions as a solution — reliving customer unease. Confirming: The process of closing the sale, actively asking the customer for their business. Following up: Consistent, persistent, and respectful (CPR) follow up to confirm satisfaction and potentially extend the relationship. Connie's method has evolved and improved over the years — nothing is ever fixed, and all businesses adapt and learn. Yet this intellectual property developed from experience has proven to be solid capital generating both revenue flows and client satisfaction, not to mention word-of-mouth recommendations and references. Business-building is a function of your network — another piece of intellectual property born of experience. You meet many people in your professional career and you make many connections. Your network is another IP asset. It's one you should groom and keep fresh and active, turning it into another business asset. An IP business can be lasting, but you may have to refresh the infrastructure. Connie's in-person, face-to-face business model was challenged during the COVID pandemic. When business travel stopped, and a lot of sales training budgets were cut. The IP remained valid. The market signal was for her to digitize the business. She took classes and hired consultants to learn how to achieve domain authority. She educated herself on the technology required for digitization of her individual business model, and the processes for digital engagement that were consistent with her 7-step process and principles. The result has been further growth, and the continued fulfillment of pursuing her business goals, and realizing new ones. Your entrepreneurial IP business can become your most fulfilling experience. Connie describes her entrepreneurial experience as immensely fulfilling — the most rewarding thing she has done in her life. It's the realization of the value accumulated over a career, and the new value shared with clients in providing service to them. It has been tremendously hard work, of course, and has required some challenging resource allocation decisions — of both time and money — but the reward greatly exceeds the sacrifice. Wellness is directly related to effective communication. “You are negotiating or selling all the time, whether it is at work or with your kids.” ~ Connie Whitman Sales are about communication, we are always communicating with others. What the common trend is for humans to talk at each other versus having conversations with each other. Connie shares with us a lesson she learned and it is the importance of listening more than we speak. We should be listening about 70% of the time and sharing or asking questions the other 30%. During that 70%, we are learning so much about the other person's perspective making it easier for us to provide a better recommendation or idea. Because we are communicating from a place of understanding the sale becomes easier. Sales can be anything from selling an idea like, renovating the kitchen, getting your children to eat vegetables or pitching your next project to your boss. This theory also goes deep than sales, it is the cornerstone to share our needs and wants with others so we too can feel seen, heard and understood. We always have two conversations going on, the conscious and the sub-conscious. The conversation is like an iceberg, 10 % is above the surface, in the conscious the rest is below the surface or in the subconscious. When we lean into and learn to tap into more of our subconscious conversation they become more robust. If you aren't a great listener change is possible, if we remember the conversation is about the person we are speaking to it becomes easier. Reprograming from the need to fix or provide a solution to hearing what that person needs or wants takes practice and awareness. The beautiful thing about practicing the 70-30 rule of a conversation is we become more aware and connected to the individual we are engaging with. Overall this will increase the health of all our relationships. Wellness Nuggets; · Communication is so much more than speaking. · Becoming an effective listener or learning to share your needs with others takes practice. · Be prepared and know your audience so you can meet them where they are at. 'When women are provided with training and entrepreneurial opportunities in distribution networks they become rolemodels in their communities showing it is possible to change limiting norms and stereotypes and to succeed.' (Paul Polman) 'Change is good if you approach it from a place of curiosity. We all have blind spots. We don't know what we don't know. Once you eliminate that blind spot you have a choice- to move forward- or not. So choose wisely' (Connie Whitman) Connie Whitman shares insights about how real communication, listening, not just hearing, can allay fears of taking on a new venture.
