In Awe & Wonder

In this episode we are looking at Psalm 96. It is a short psalm so this episode is also short. Psalm 96 is a gospel song, in that it calls on all nations, not just Israel, to praise God as King. It personifies elements of creation to praise God, as the creation looks ahead to the redemption and restoration of everything on the new Earth. The Lord is also our Judge, Who will judge with justice and equity. He is righteous and faithful to His people. Keep reading your Bible!

In this episode we are looking at Psalm 95. We are in a series of looking at Book 4 of the Psalms, which starts with Psalm 90. Beginning in Psalm 93 through Psalm 100, the psalms have an overarching theme of showing God as King. Psalm 95 calls believers to respond in two ways to God - Creator and King. Verses 1 - a priest or worship leader calling a congregation together to worship. Verse 3 - the reference to "gods" is to mythological gods. Verses 6-8 calls believers to submit to God, our Creator and King. (Worship, bow down, kneel, do not harden your hearts) Verse 8 - referencing the events at Meribah and Massah, which can be translated as quarreling or testing. Exodus 17:1-7 & Numbers 20:1-13 Verse 9 switches to God directly speaking. Verses 11 "shall not enter my rest" - those who rebelled in the wilderness didn't enter the Promised Land. In this episode, we are looking at Psalm 94. This psalm keeps with the theme of "God is King." It is also an imprecatory psalm, which calls for the destruction of the evildoers. We discuss what that means and we take a closer look at the holiness of God. This psalm can also be broken down into five perspectives for dealing with oppression and injustice. 1) Vengeance belongs to God. (v.1-7) 2) God knows what is happening in the world...even down to everyone's thoughts and intentions. He's sovereign and holding everything together, actively involved in humanity. (v.8-11) 3) True happiness, contentment, and fulfillment is available even while experiencing oppression and injustice. As His children, we have assurance that He is with us and is faithful to fulfill His promises. (v.12-15) 4) God can be looked to for protection and help during times of struggle. We should be relying on Him because He is trustworthy. (v.16-19) 5) Shows that people reap what they sow. (v.20-23) Attributes of God in this psalm: Just, Judge, Holy, Omnipotent, Omnipresent, Compassionate, Steadfast Love, Protector, Helper, Rescuer, Faithful, Trustworthy, Powerful, Mighty, and King.   In this episode we are looking at Psalm 93. This is a short Psalm with just five verses. It is an introduction poem to a group of Psalms that have a main theme of praising God as King. The psalms with this primary theme go through Psalm 100. The attributes of God we see in this psalm are as follows: Creator and Sustainer of the universe Eternal; No beginning or end; Not created; Alpha & Omega Powerful, and His power does not rely upon anything external to Himself High and Mighty Sovereign, in control of everything, including the forces of chaos and evil Holy Just Orderly, He brings order out of chaos, has laws to bring order, and has a purpose for order Jesus is God and He is our Prophet, Priest, and King. In this episode, we are looking at Psalm 92. This psalm is labeled as "A Song for the Sabbath," meaning it was specifically designed to be a hymn to use in musical corporate worship. This psalm is symmetrical in that it contains 7 lines of 52 words, then verse 8, which is the heart of the psalm, and then 7 lines of 52 words. The first seven verses praise God and show how the prosperity of the wicked will be temporary. The second seven verses (9-15) after verse 8, shows the downfall of the wicked and prosperity of the godly/righteous, who praise God. Verse 8, the main point of the psalm says, "But you, O Lord, are on high forever." May we be encouraged that we serve a God Who Is faithful, trustworthy, loving, powerful, and just. This is the third episode of the month, which means we will be looking at a couple stories of martyrs for the Christian faith. It is good to remember those who stood up and didn’t deny Jesus. And it can bolster our faith to read about what they faced. The Christian martyr, stands on the objective truth of Jesus Christ and the gospel. Not only do they have the Holy Spirit with them to strengthen and comfort them, but they have peace, joy, and hope. They have Jesus and Jesus has them. They know that Jesus already died for them, to atone for their sins, having mercy on them, to adopt them into His family as a child of God, to impute righteousness to them in the greatest act of love and grace. These martyrs died so the gospel message and the Kingdom of God might continue on. May their stories encourage you and point you to the Hope, the One True God. Passages referenced: Thomas is named among the Apostles in Matthew 10:3; Mark 3:18; Luke 6:15; and Acts 1:13 Thomas' interactions are recorded in John. They are as follows: John 11:5-16 John 14:5 John 20:24-29 John 21:2 The Apostle Thomas was martyred in Madras, India around 72 A.D. John Denley was a Protestant in England, martyred in 1555. This is the second episode of the month, so we will be reading a Psalm, discussing it, seeing what attributes of God we might see in it, and giving praise and thanksgiving to God. This time, we are looking at Psalm 91. This is a refuge Psalm, meant to show the trustworthiness of God. It is an antidote to fears and anxiety. Verses 1-2 are an affirmation that God IS our Refuge. Verses 3-13 are a description of HOW the Lord is our Refuge. Verses 14-16 are a CONFIRMATION by God that He is, in fact, our Refuge. Scripture used in this episode: Psalm 91; Deuteronomy 5:33-6:2;  Proverbs 3:1-2; Matthew 4:1-11. In Matthew 4, in the temptation of Jesus, we see Satan appealing to the most common temptations: physical drive, pride, and possessions. Also, in the second temptation, where Satan quotes Psalm 91:11-12 to Jesus, Satan wants to make faith into a presumption. The promise of long life (quantity of life and quality of life) are tied to keeping God's commands. This promise may not be fulfilled in the here and now, but will ultimately be fulfilled in our perfect, eternal life in the new heavens and new earth. We'll be looking at some names of God on the first week of each month. This week, we are talking about the name El Roi, meaning The God Who Sees Me. Scripture passages: Genesis 16:1-16; Genesis 21:1-21; Psalm 33:13-22; Psalm 121:3, 5-8; Psalm 139:1-18; Proverbs 15:3; 2 Chronicles 16:9; Matthew 5:8; Matthew 6:3-4 Alone, impoverished, and pregnant, Hagar found she wasn't alone. God had seen her and her circumstances. God kept her and her son, Ishmael (meaning God hears), alive. God fulfilled His promise to her that her offspring would be multiplied and His promise to Abraham to make a nation of Ishmael because he was Abraham's son. God is faithful and trustworthy. Even the hairs of our head are numbered; not even a sparrow falls to the ground without God knowing. God watches over you. He is near, helping to guide you through situations and working out His plans for our future. (Mainly our current sanctification and our future redemption and glorification.) You might be wondering why anyone would want to read stories that are sometimes disturbing and end in death. It could be viewed as a morbid thing to do. However, it is good to remember those who stood up and didn’t deny Jesus. And it can bolster our faith to read about what they faced. The Christian martyr, stands on the objective truth of Jesus Christ and the gospel. Not only do they have the Holy Spirit with them to strengthen and comfort them, but they have peace, joy, and hope. They have Jesus and Jesus has them. They know that Jesus already died for them, to atone for their sins, having mercy on them, to adopt them into His family as a child of God, to impute righteousness to them in the greatest act of love and grace. Jesus rose from the dead three days later, defeating death, and sent the Holy Spirit to live in His sons and daughters, to minister to us and comfort us, and point us to the promise of eternal life in heaven with Him. These martyrs have faith in that gospel message and hope for the sinless, perfect eternal life that awaits them with their Savior Jesus. They also have hope that other converts will come from people observing what happened to them, which many did, as a testimony that this God, this Jesus, is the One True God and is worth losing one’s life for – to not deny Him. This is deeper than worshiping an idol or made-up god or religion, which might only give some temporary pleasure in life on earth. This is the hope that we have, not a wishing type hope, but hope that has been backed up with action, that to live is Christ, but to die is gain. These martyrs also died so that the gospel message and the Kingdom of God might continue on. May their stories encourage you and point you to the Hope, the One True God. Passages referenced: Revelation 6:9-11 Luke 6:22-23 Matthew 10:32-33 1 Peter 3:14-16 Nehemiah 8:10 Stephen's story is in Acts chapters 6 and 7, around A.D. 36 in Jerusalem. The second week of the month, we're going to look at a Psalm. Psalm 90 starts Book 4 of the Psalms. The Psalms are divided into five books. The 4th and 5th books are focused more on giving thanks and praise to God and pointing toward the coming Kingdom. This Psalm is written by Moses. The context is the Israelites wandering in the wilderness. Psalm 90:1-2 is an affirmation of faith in the Lord as the eternal refuge of His people. In these verses, we see God as our dwelling place, our refuge, eternal, self-existent, and Creator. Psalm 90:3-11 is a lament of the pain and trouble of human existence, living in a sinful, fallen world. In these verses, we see God as outside of time, sovereign, judge, having anger & wrath, omniscient (all-knowing), and powerful. Psalm 90:12-17 offers up a series of requests. In these requests, we see God as being wisdom, our satisfaction/fulfillment, steadfast love (pointing to the covenant), joy, Redeemer/Restorer, and God with us/faithful. We'll be looking at some names of God on the first week of each month. This week, we are talking about the name Elohim, meaning God, Mighty Creator. Scripture passages: Genesis 1:1; Genesis 1:26-28; Genesis 28:10-22; Genesis 35:1-8; Psalm 102; Psalm 18:27-30; Psalm 19:1; Psalm 139:13-16; Isaiah 40:27-31; Isaiah 41:10 These passages show God's creative power, authority, and sovereignty. We can observe and appreciate the world and everything God made. We recognize and appreciate that we (humans) were made in God's image. We were all created to bear His image and living with this awareness should effect how we live and how we treat others. Other things we observe in these passages about God is that He sustains us, cares about us, and blesses us (His children). God is unchanging, perfect, outside of time and space, eternal (always was and always will be), wise, all-powerful, good, stable, strong, trustworthy, and faithful.   [Sidebar: I mentioned a devotional book that I read in conjunction with reading through the Bible in 2020.   On this episode of In Awe & Wonder podcast, I'm talking about awe. This is a discussion of chapter 2 of the book, "The Joy of Fearing God," by Jerry Bridges. I also take a detour to talk for a few minutes about defining faith, and then about how we can trust God. We see and experience bad things that God allows in our lives, (things that are not a direct result of a sin we committed, such as miscarriage or natural disasters), so He doesn't seem "safe." However, He is good, perfect, compassionate, and loving. We have to come to a place of trusting God, Who isn't safe, but He's good. I have fallen behind in trying to post an episode every week. The In Awe & Wonder podcast is to help women grow in Biblical literacy, discernment, sanctification, Christian living, and our awe and wonder of God. To promote Biblical literacy, Bible study, and Bible interpretation, we will be discussing what’s in the Bible; reading verses & passages; doing Bible studies; talking about resources for study; hermeneutics; canonicity; sola Scriptura; and Bible memory. To practice and grow in discernment and filter things through a Biblical lens with critical thinking – learning to pause to objectively analyze something before accepting it as true, we will be recommending solid resources; discussing Biblical theology and doctrine; occasionally analyzing current events, cultural issues, and things we see on social media. To discuss matters of sanctification – how God grows us via progressive sanctification, though not achieving total sanctification while on earth – especially as it pertains to lessons learned through suffering, we will be discussing the attributes of God – learning Who He is; our identity in Christ – learning who we are in Him; the fruit of the spirit – qualities the Holy Spirit manifests in the life of the believer; and our salvation and eternal life to come. To promote practical Christian living, we will occasionally discuss things such as ways to share the gospel; raising teen girls in a godly way; tips for moving long distances; stewardship by ways of meal planning, grocery tips, and thrifting; how to find a good church; doing ministry in the local church; friendship; and marriage. To raise awareness of the degree of awe, wonder, and reverence we should be giving to God, we will be making sure our focus and recognition is on the Creator instead of the creation and practicing the praise, thanksgiving, and obedience we ought to give to God as we glorify Him and enjoy Him forever. We will give proper authority and sufficiency to God’s Word; work on our prayer lives; recognize the beauty in nature; recognize common grace for all, and the means of grace for Believers; blessings we may have; people that God puts in our lives; and recognizing our responsibility to live holy lives. Typical episodes will include Bible study, Bible memory, praise, prayer, the gospel, and a sprinkling of the attributes of God, stories of martyrs, stories behind our hymns, and promoting other podcasts, ministries, and resources. We may do book clubs from time to time, where I will announce a book, whomever wants to read it can do so, we will discuss on social media, and I will discuss some of the topics from the book on the podcast. I’ll be talking about my two birth defects, miscarriages, pregnancy complications, kids in the NICU, a child with sensory processing disorder, and a husband with a brain tumor. I’d like to say upfront, that if hearing about miscarriage or pregnancy is not something you want to listen to, I give a warning when I’m going to start talking about them so you can skip ahead or stop the episode. I’m going to do my best not to get into many details of the miscarriages or pregnancy complications, but I want to discuss them in general because they have been part of my growth and maturity in many ways. This book was a valuable resource: "Safe in the Arms of God: Truth from Heaven About the Death of a Child" by John MacArthur For a Christian, God will use each person and each defect in different ways – for our sanctification and growth, and for His glory. Psalm 139 says, “For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well. My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them.” My birth defects have taught me so much about the sovereignty of God. He formed me in a way that would seem negative to other people, in some countries the cleft palate would have caused parents to even reject me, yet He did it and He did it for my good and His glory. Will we not accept everything from God, whether good or bad? This episode is the second in the four-part "Reboot" series. This time, I talk about my history in light of my upbringing, "testimony," and churches we have attended in all of our moving around. I have seen and been part of a cross-section of American Evangelicalism that has led to bringing me around to being Reformed. Doctrine, theology, church history, how to watch for false teaching, and how to filter things through a Biblical lens was not explicitly taught in any churches I had attended. When I got on the path of studying these things and attending a Reformed church that does teach these things, I dove in and have been learning a great deal. This is the first episode of the In Awe & Wonder podcast. I’m calling this episode “Reboot: Start Over.” Here’s why: I only did one other podcast episode, and it was way back in the fall of 2017! I launched one episode and that was it. I wasn’t intending for that to happen, but it did. I also haven’t posted on the blog since that episode, and before that, it was quite a long time. I’m starting all over again on the Christian Podcast Community. I think it's best to do multiple episodes as an intro, so this will be the first in a “Reboot” series. I'm doing these episodes first, so anyone listening will get to know me, where my heart is, what the purpose is here, and what you might be able to expect. After catching up on some history and laying the foundation, I will be moving on to much more important and interesting discussions. The purpose and direction will be unfolded as I go through this four-part series.
