The Single Question on Your Final Exam - #10027

A Word With You

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 17, 2025

Dr. Henry was one of the most challenging professors I had in college. And I anticipated the final exam in his class was going to be a monumental challenge. Who knows what questions Dr. Henry could throw at us from his incredible intellect! Well, word began to leak out about his final from the first students that took it. They didn't give any details - they just shared one surprising, tantalizing fact. They said, "There's only one question on the exam!" Well, most of us took that news as encouragement as we stood on the edge of academic survival. But when Dr. Henry set the exam in front of us, we weren't quite as encouraged. This entire semester of theology class had been devoted to what the Bible says about the person and work of the Holy Spirit. The professor's question? "Describe the Person and work of the Holy Spirit." Oh come on! One question, but what a question! I'm Ron Hutchcraft and I want to have A Word With You today about "The Single Question on Your Final Exam." You may have been out of school a while. I'm sure you don't miss final exams, but you still have one more. We all do. The day your heart beats its last and you stand before the God who made you. And it appears from God's Word, the Bible, that there will only be one question on your final exam. But what a question! Our word for today from the Word of God comes from 1 John 5:11-12. "God has given us eternal life and this life is in His Son. He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life." God says the human race is divided into two groups, and only two. Those who have Jesus and therefore have eternal life - they will go to heaven when they die. And those who do not have Jesus and therefore do not have eternal life - they'll go to eternal separation from God. In the words of John 3:36, "Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God's wrath remains on him." Now there's no question where God wants you to be forever - with Him in heaven. That's why He paid such a high price to remove what would keep you out of heaven - the sin of your life; all those countless times you've done it your way instead of God's way. You can't get into heaven with sin. And it won't work just trying to repay the wrong we've done with religion or being good. Sin has to be removed, not repaid. And that seems impossible when the penalty for running our own lives is an eternal death penalty. But God loves you so much that, according to John 3:16, "He gave His one and only Son that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life." God sent His Son to carry all the guilt and all the dying of your sin - to literally die your death penalty. So you shouldn't be surprised when you stand before God and He asks you that one question on His final exam - the one that determines where you'll be forever. "What did you do with My Son?" Not, "What good things did you do?" Not, "Did you believe the right things?" Not, "What religion were you?" God is interested in only one thing, "What did you do with His Son who gave His life for you?" The only answer that will open the gates of heaven to you is, "Lord, I invited Your Son, Jesus, into my heart and I put my total trust in Him to be my Rescuer from my sin." Has there ever been a time when you've done that? If you're not sure, please let today be your Jesus-day. Tell Him you want to be His - you want to belong to Him. "Jesus, I believe when You died on that cross it was for me. And I'm putting all my trust in You today." Our website exists to help you to cross over from death to life this very day. I hope you'll check it out - ANewStory.com. The final exam is coming - God has set the time. He'll ask you, "What did you do with My Son?" I pray you'll be able to point to this very day as the day you say, "I asked Him to save me from my sin."

Today, I want to introduce you to a powerful framework called a Relationship Grid—a tool that maps how we show up in our relationships: in friendship, marriage, parenting, work, and even in our relationship with God. This particular grid we will focus on spans a continuum from unhealthy enmeshment and co-dependency to healthy interdependence, and all the way to emotional detachment and avoidance. Somewhere on this spectrum, you and I live every day. You'll recognize yourself in some of these patterns—like the Doormat, the Rescuer, or the Controller. Others of us might identify with the Avoidant, the Cynic, or the Ghost. These aren't just labels; they reflect deep beliefs, unmet needs, and relational habits shaped by our past.

In this episode, Jen Kidby is joined by leadership development coach Tony Worgan to explore how the language leaders use shapes the culture, dynamics, and performance of their teams. Tony shares insights from his coaching practice, highlighting the power of being intentional with words and the impact of “discounting” language—subtle phrases that can unintentionally diminish a person's contributions or confidence. He encourages leaders to shift from reactive or rescuing behaviours toward more open, curious coaching conversations. By staying present rather than striving for perfection, leaders can create psychologically safe environments where people feel heard, valued, and empowered.   Tony also introduces practical tools from transactional analysis like the Drama Triangle which outlines the roles of Rescuer, Persecutor, and Victim in unproductive dynamics, and shows how to break out of these patterns. He explains the importance of “strokes”—small, meaningful recognitions that fuel trust and motivation—and offers advice on finding the right balance of positive and constructive feedback. The conversation emphasizes the long-term benefits of a coaching mindset, where thoughtful communication becomes a foundation for trust, growth, and stronger relationships at work. You will learn ·       How language shapes workplace culture and either builds or breaks trust. ·       Practical advice for leaders on open communication and addressing issues directly. ·       The ideal ratio of positive to negative ‘strokes' for building trust and resilience in teams     “Coaching transformed my whole experience of myself as a leader, my identity as a leader, and all my workplace relationships.”   Don't forget to subscribe, rate, and leave us a review! "Hope taught me the meaning of life, Tina taught me the meaning of love"' It's not everyday you meet a golden retriever in Thailand. When Niall came across a dog shackled to a short chain and in a poor state of health something reminded him of his personal battle with addiction. He knew he had to rescue her immediately - golden retrievers are rare in Thailand - but there was just something about this dog in particular that told him she was destined for more. He named her Tina, and what she did next is an incredible tale of survival, hope and love. Despite her terrible treatment at the hands of humans, she refused to distrust them or feel sorry for herself, and only opened her heart wider - always with a grin (yes dogs can smile) and a reassuring wag of her shaggy yellow tail. From the minute Tina was free of her chains, she got on with what needed to be done, inspiring a dog hospital to be built and named after her and helping dogs from all over the world - whether they're street dogs from Thailand or rescue pups in Montana. In this deeply personal and illuminating solo episode, Kat continues exploring the victim–perpetrator–savior triangle—this time through the lens of the rescuer. What happens when our instinct to protect and fix becomes another loop keeping us—and others—stuck? Using a real-life experience from Mother's Day, Kat shares the powerful moment she recognized her own impulse to rescue her son and how it revealed a deeper spiritual invitation: to become the field itself, rather than the actor within the story. From reparenting and presence to energetic sovereignty and exiting outdated paradigms, this episode is a masterclass in how to stop reinforcing loops of drama, and instead co-create a reality rooted in frequency, alignment, and pure creative force. What is discussed: ✨ How the rescuer/savior role hides behind righteousness and protection ✨ Realizing the emotional charge when “saving” your child or loved one ✨ Why motherhood is a sacred spiral for awakening deeper self-awareness ✨ How to stop seeing others as victims—even your own children ✨ Becoming the frequency holder instead of reacting from fear or control ✨ Transitioning from outdated systems into conscious field creation ✨ The unraveling of old feminine codes and the rise of the sovereign solar feminine Takeaways: — You are not here to rescue. You are here to radiate. — The rescuer still plays within the triangle and needs a victim to exist. — We free ourselves not by resisting the old, but by embodying a new frequency. — The shift from acting to being the field is how reality rearranges itself. Nature can be seriously powerful, and sometimes way more dangerous than it looks. Back in July 2011, a 44-year-old man was dancing near the Nakalele blowhole in Maui when he got dragged in by the force of the water. He popped back up with the next wave for a second, but then disappeared for good. Rescuers searched for three days, but sadly, they never found him — it's believed he was swept out into the ocean. Blowholes might look like cool tourist spots, but this shows just how dangerous they can really be. It's a reminder that you should never underestimate the crazy strength of nature. Triangulation: How Loved Ones Get Stuck in Toxic Relationship Dynamics

Send us a text! (add your email to get a response)Have you ever noticed a never-ending cycle of drama amongst your family or friend group? In this episode, we talk about how the Drama Triangle might be the hidden pattern keeping your relationships stuck in painful cycles. Whether you're supporting a loved one with mental illness or navigating difficult family dynamics, this pattern will keep you trapped in the pain instead of solving it.Stephen Karpman's Drama Triangle describes three roles that create and sustain relationship dysfunction: the Victim (feeling helpless and powerless), the Persecutor (critical and blaming), and the Rescuer (rushing to fix problems). What makes this pattern so challenging is how people shift between these roles, maintaining the pain while never actually resolving underlying issues. We identify places where we can spot the drama triangle in our own lives—from childhood experiences with divorced parents to adult relationships—showing how these patterns created confusion and heartache. These triangles often form because we're desperately trying to maintain stability, even when that stability is painful. The good news is that understanding these patterns gives you the power to break free. We explore practical ways to step outside your habitual role and ultimately break down the triangle entirely. Rather than seeing these behaviors as character flaws, we frame them as adaptations that once served a purpose but may now be limiting your growth and happiness. This conversation highlights how recognizing these patterns can help you create more authentic connections with loved ones struggling with mental health challenges. Check out KulaMind.com to learn more about our online platform designed to help you break toxic patterns and find peace while supporting someone with mental illness.Resources:https://karpmandramatriangle.com/dt_article_only.htmlSupport the showIf you have a loved one with mental or emotional problems, join KulaMind, our community and support platform. If you're a Millenial, then chances are you grew up watching The Rescuers, so are somewhat traumatised by Gators, having watched young orphan Penny be tormented by Madame Medusa and her two, thicc pet alligators. But, this is reality, so we have important questions to address, the most pertinent being: "Are Gators actually assholes?", and to help Alice answer that question, we brought in native Floridian and the host of "Just the Zoo of Us" podcast: Ellen Weatherford! They'll be diving into all the facts: their prehistoric backstory, their sneaky hunting strategies, their surprisingly tender parenting skills — and of course, their legendary ability to look completely harmless until they absolutely aren't. So, are Gators swampy jerks that are keen to ruin your canoe trip? Or are they just misunderstood survival experts with a mouth full of teeth? Social Media is full of influencers & self-help gurus preaching about hidden virtue waiting to be unleashed inside your heart. You also hear a lot of this in our recovery community, in the rooms etc. That inner strength is the key to success. It’s the core of Eastern mysticism, New Age thinking: that you can tap into some inner reservoir of goodness. That we have the power within us to conquer whatever lies ahead. But what if Scripture says the exact opposite? What if, apart from Christ, there is no divine spark inside us, but a rebellious, rotting sin nature, itching to break out? Searching for redemption within is like digging through a landfill hoping to find buried treasure. You can meditate all you want, cultivate a positive mindset, even convince yourself you hold something sacred. This is a hard truth, but it can also be liberating: There’s nothing of eternal value in our fallen hearts without Christ. We need righteousness that doesn’t come from within, a Rescuer outside of us…to expose what’s really in us. To provide the strength we cannot summon on our own as we seek to battle the sin that is within us.

The Chainsaw In Your Mouth - #9987

A Word With You

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 22, 2025

The man in the Disney movie was an inventor. One of his inventions was a shrinking machine. There's been some suggestions that that's what happened to me - I got into a shrinking machine. Anyway, this actually did happen to his kids' baseball. It crashed through the window of his laboratory. It landed in dad's shrinking machine, turning it on as it landed, and the kids were amazed to see how their ball suddenly shrank. Thinking this machine was really cool, they started playing with it...until the machine suddenly shrank them to an almost invisible size. And the anguished cry of the father is the title of the movie "Honey, I shrunk the kids!" I'm Ron Hutchcraft and I want to have A Word With You today about "The Chainsaw in Your Mouth." Sadly, too many of us have a shrinking machine that is shrinking our kids, maybe our spouse, other people we love. That shrinking machine is in your mouth. It's a tongue that says things that repeatedly diminish some of the very people you love the most: angry things, cutting things, sarcastic or critical things, discouraging things. It's almost as if we have this verbal chain saw in our mouth that keeps cutting people we care about. It may be that you've been doing this for so long you hardly even notice how destructive some of your words are. But the people who are hearing them are not only noticing your words, it's quite possible they will never forget them. We can still remember the names we were called decades ago, right? Some of us have even defined our self-worth, or our lack of self-worth, based on some of those shrinking things that someone said to us. That's how what you say impacts those you love. There's so much power in your words! The Bible doesn't talk about a verbal chainsaw, but it does talk about a verbal sword. It says, in Proverbs 12:18, "Reckless words pierce like a sword." Proverbs 18:21 raises the stakes even higher: "The tongue has the power of life and death." Your words are either making the people around you feel more alive inside, or it's killing them inside. We replay people's failures over and over, we diminish people by constantly comparing them to someone else, we mark them, maybe for life, with the names we call them. We spew out reckless words to win the moment, but we scar someone for life. Jesus said, "Out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks" (Matthew 12:35). A runaway mouth comes from something down deep inside; a dark, angry, wounded heart. Until the heart gets fixed, the mouth is just going to keep shrinking and scarring people we care about. It's all part of this sin thing the Bible talks about; our separation from God because we've pushed Him out to do the things we want to do the way we want to do them. The hurt we inflict comes from a sinful heart. God knows that. That's why He sent His one and only Son to pay the price for our sin, to rise from the dead, to make it possible to be forgiven for every hurting thing, every unholy thing I've ever done or said. Ezekiel 36:26-27, our word for today from the Word of God, makes this incredible promise: "I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. I will put My Spirit in you. I will be your God. I will save you from all your uncleanness." A new heart, cleansed by Jesus' forgiveness, and filled with His love. And a new beginning for any man or woman who reaches out to Jesus in total faith, admitting their sin, surrendering their sin, and grabbing Jesus as their personal Rescuer from their personal sin. If you have never done that, today tell Him, "Jesus, I'm Yours." I want to invite you to as soon as you can today, get over to our website and walk with me into what it takes to actually know that you have begun your personal relationship with Jesus. Just go to ANewStory.com. Because of Jesus, it doesn't have to be the way it's always been. He's been loving and changing people for a long, long time, and He's waiting to do that for you today. Letting Jesus into your life is the most loving thing you'll ever do for the people you love.

The Drama Triangle Explained: How to Reclaim Your Power The Drama Triangle, a concept developed by psychologist Stephen Karpman, illustrates how individuals can become entangled in a cycle of emotional exhaustion and conflict through three distinct roles: the victim, the rescuer, and the villain. Each role plays a significant part in perpetuating drama in our lives, often without our conscious awareness. Host Tonya Leigh explores the concept of the Drama Triangle, a framework that reveals the subconscious patterns we create in our lives. The discussion highlights how many people gravitate towards drama, whether for a sense of identity, adrenaline, or connection, often without realizing it. Tonya emphasizes that while some drama may serve a purpose, much of it keeps us trapped in familiar, chaotic states, preventing us from experiencing peace and ease in our lives.  Tune in as we break down the three roles in the Drama Triangle—victim, villain, and hero—and how to recognize and escape these patterns to achieve a more elegant and fulfilling life. 00:47 - The Allure of Drama: Why We Create It 01:03 - Craving Peace and Elegance 02:09 - Role 1: The Victim 04:16 - The Victim's Self-Image 07:10 - Role 2: The Rescuer 09:50 - Examples of the Rescuer Role 11:07 - The Rescuer's Self-Image 16:00 - Role 3: The Villain 19:30 - Examples of the Villain Role 22:26 - The Villain's Self-Image 23:32 - Stepping Out of the Drama Triangle 24:03 - Becoming the Main Character Quotes: "What we crave is a sense of ease, a sense of peace, a sense of elegance in our lives, which means that we're going to have to give up some of the drama." "I'm only valuable when I'm needed." "The control, the criticism, and the blame comes from a fear of losing control, of not being enough, of being exposed."
