Or: Paul is destined to become the One, and that is what happens. The Heroes Journey, but it’s all political, and there are really big worms What’s your word? Sand Spice! Favorite character this episode? The creepy little sister (name starts with an a) (^Alia^) And she creepy as heck.  Gurney, but also maybe Alia… I also like Paul… So… maybe I can’t choose.  Omg Yueh  Technical Talking Points (music, lighting, editing): Again we are in the 80’s where much is laid out on a platter for us, with narration and hearing thoughts. The special effects seemed to be the star of the show. (At the cost of character development) Soundtrack was super enjoyable.  I know I am always complaining about this, but why do so many scenes have to be so dark? This is the first excursion of ours into soft science fiction! WOOT WOOT! Herbert designed this book (and series) in a very careful manner, but ultimately didn’t really think of the series as science fiction. He considered it an epic adventure, and while he was very careful to include the steps of the Hero’s Journey, fitting each role perfectly, he also relied heavily on Arthurian legend.   Great Dragons I mean Sand worms,  protect the precious treasure OMG I meant Melange the spice. The Dragons worms have massive teeth and bellow fire cinnamon. If this reminds you of Beowulf, well it should!  Much of the Dune Universe is alien and outlandish at first but if you replace some words, you end up with something that is far closer to home. Water = Oil for example  Re: Hero’s Journey - Herbert wanted his Hero/Messiah to do something other superheroes don’t, which is to gain power slowly, and through much trial, he also gains powers through mystics and careful technique. Paul never gets bit by a spider, isn’t a crazy powerful alien or anything of the sort. He’s a hard working human. That’s the first thing we learn about him, he’ human. Which of course implies that most of the people we see in this show are inhuman.  Movie was made 20 years or so after the book, and it was kinda a ‘clock is running out scenario’ but they still made something cool which is unusual. Often when we see things rushed, they do a poor job, but even Herbert was pleased with this film saying that it ‘said everything he wanted it to say’. I agree btw. It was a box office bomb though. It’s one of those movies that they did a good job, but it wasn’t appreciated for a while. It had a lot of negativity which is partially why it’s getting a reboot, but also to keep those rights to keep the money. I have mixed feelings about the new version. The cast seems promising, but I wish they’d stop redoing things that don’t deserve it.  I just looked up 1984 films and it isn’t surprising it bombed when you look at all of the movies it was up against! So many great films that year!!! The director himself actually disowned it. (David Lynch) because he felt in the end he didn’t have much control. It was criticized for being unfaithful to the source material (which… is somewhat true, but ultimately I think that you need to pay attention to what happens, and line it up with the book, It’s still right. Maybe I’m biased because I’m so used to my favorite books being destroyed for film, but Dune book to movie doesn’t bother me much at all. It was also criticized for its pacing, visual affects, score, acting… it goes on and on. I have more thoughts i can share later.  So in 1982 Herbert was interviewed about Dune and said that the message novel is “Don’t trust leaders to always be right” and I just feel like we gotta say this again for people in the back!  2-3 favorite moments in the show: Well, I wish I had read the books. I felt like I didn’t get to know any of the characters. The only ones I felt like I got to know were Gurney, and the Barron. Likely because of the actors skill with little time. I am not a fan of things that are gross. The Barron’s world was so icky. But I did love the way they all seemed to be just a little psycho and so in a quirky happy mood. (I think it might have been some of the ridiculousness that the actors were dealing with showing in their acting, but it was fun.) I had to pause the show when Alia? Came and was warning them at the end about her brother. When she used to voice I had to laugh for a minute. The moment when Gurney is running in the fight with the little pug dog. Wish we had seen it one more time at the end, I wonder how he fared… Overall story was super interesting, I just feel the need to connect with characters to really enjoy the story. I am really looking forward to the remake. I was super confused when the mom drank the water of life, I didn’t realize there was more than one of the ladies. I guess I am confused about all of that stuff.  Literally anytime the weirding way comes about. This reinforces the idea that words are more powerful than we give them credit and I love that about this series. Dune gives power to the ordinary, rather than the extraordinary. Which is the shit.  Paul’s Gom Jabbar was good. I mean bad… but it was done perfectly. It’s everything I hoped for.  The Barron’s actor who I can’t think of the name of the actor was just the perfect freaking crazy.  The Water of life was crazy but good. Like… daymn son. Also Maya-Fairy tale romance seen from the outside isn’t so very pretty, thank goodness for great supporting characters. Maxx - there is a hawklady and a wolfguy and a mouseguy and they go on an adventure.  Or … love story about a guy who turns into a wolf and a lady who turns into a hawk and his quest for revenge. Also there is a kid named mouse. What’s your word? Maya-Dated Maxx - *eagle screech noise* (https://youtu.be/CztbQ4Fgv_w?t=102) Favorite character this episode? Maxx - An hour in and uhh no one... The horse? Finished watching it and it is the guy who got stabbed in the foot by mouse in the grate  Maya-Mouse Technical Talking Points (music, lighting, editing): 80’s music, fuzzy compared to HD of today, lighting at night so much easier on my old eyes compared to nowadays. Maxx - The music in the beginning! I didn’t know what type of movie this was going to be and wow def didn’t guess right. Loved the animal to human transitions  2-3 favorite moments in the show: Maya’s notes from watching:Ladyhawke 80s theme background music lol Ferris Beuhler Was it an 80s technique to have characters orally narrate for the storyline? The scene where he is running from all the soldiers feels a bit more realistic than most fight scenes. Like a bunch of goons with swords from the Middle Ages are not likely to actually have a bunch of choke holds and cool moves. Captain Nevar Michelle Pfiffer is the most beautiful woman.  When mouse is in the forest and talks to the made up people. “Pierre draw your sword, get out your crossbow.” Always together eternally apart. As long as the sun rises as long as the sun sets. The sword hilt cut to the bishop nightmare with the top of the cross staff shadow on his wall from the soldier. Isabeau  Her screams as she’s falling and the cries of the hawk was cool. Cezar. Racist depiction? Hawks and wolves mate for life so cheesy. every happy moment in my life has come from lying. Mouse really struggles about telling the truth and his conscience even though he acts as if he doesn’t. I love hooded capes! The lighthearted comedy bits. Poor soggy wolf. Mouse saving the wolf in the water. All I could do was think of how difficult it would be to get my dog out of the water if it was freaked out. When do they ever rest? fuck nevar. He’s a stupid head. His hatred for the bishop is larger than his love for isabeau. I beg you take her life. Uh, no you idiot.  Horse fight in the chapel. I liked the shot through his visor. Imperious make it quick, god forgive me. Now he thinks she’s dead. It’s Shakespearian. The guy dies because he trips onto the sword. Everyone just stands there watching quietly.  I don’t understand mouses understanding of what is happening at the end. Isabeau is dead, damn you, um. If she had been dead it would be your stupid fault.  Love end for mouse character. I’ll meet you at the pearly gates even if I have to pick the lock. Maxx random notes: (slowly watching and updating) He was swimming in the sewer and had his eyes open!?  1hr in and so far doesn’t pass the bechdel test (sp?) also ladyhawk doesn’t really talk much? So far i find it boring and can guess what is happening :/  Very cheesy music - love hate it The animal to human scenes are hilarious the flashing eyeball and The movie is called ladyhawk and she has like zero input  Her name is isabo?  Guywolf is a selfish butt i bet they all die b/c him Wtf this horse fight scene is so stupid Only the man people died so i was wrong, and it was a love story about a guy See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Joey - I don’t know what happened to the Grandfather Paradox, but apparently that’s called protocol 4 in the future, everyone takes directions from a super computer and that isn’t even the half of it.  Maya - People following a bunch of basic protocols from a destitute future come back in time by taking over people’s lives right before their time of death and pretend poorly to be them while also doing whatever they are told by the director/ai from the future. What’s your word? Shoshie- innovative  Maxx - control Joey - Nostalgia Maya - unnerving Favorite character this episode? Maxx - the farmer dude? They all were kinda sketch Joey - David  is my favorite non traveler. Phillip is my favorite traveler.  Maya - David also, although it was annoying how put together he was. Just a bit too nice and good and clean. I liked Grace/27 a bit too. Technical Talking Points (music, lighting, editing): Maxx : The music was nice and kinda eerie…? Joey - I liked the use of lighting during “Room 101”  Maya - the camera angles were so odd. Sometimes super close only showing one eye and sometimes all the way across the room from a strange angle with furniture in the way.  2-3 favorite moments in the show: Maxx: Found it interesting how they had these bonds with the people in their host bodies The first episode or so was fun I think they should have kept the fbi guy hunting them longer The last bit finding out how the stuff they have been doing is affecting the future but it wasn’t for good? What they know as truth isn’t accurate and they are getting a taste of what it might feel like to be the people around them not knowing what is happening? Joey - I had a great friggin time. The first episode was hard to watch for me, I didn’t understand what was going on, which honestly was completely on purpose and I’m cool with it now, but I found it irksome, but also there was an overdose right kind of at the get go and that was really hard for me to see. I think it made me love the Phillip character though.  I loved some of the kickbacks to things like David reminding Marcy that she’s naked. It was clearly a recurring thing in their relationship and it was just the same old thing for them. I felt like David was so real in those moments. I also liked seeing the dynamics of the group grow. They knew each other through training before they went into the past, but clearly didn’t really know one another. I just loved seeing those relationships blossom.   Other thoughts: This show was just too much but also not enough? The idea that they took other peoples bodies and then continued to live their lives was odd and really uncomfortable… couldn’t they have made it so they were thought to be dead or something and then move across the country or something and just start a new?  how did the fbi guy even start getting on their trail?  If the director is a machine then someone must have coded it and there would be human mistakes and biases in it too…?  The one guy kissed the turtle!!!! Ugh salmonella  Feels like some cult vibes with the director and everything I don’t really want to watch anymore episodes.  They covered some topics but just kinda lightly not really delving into things  -Joey LOVES dystopian movies/novels and if she had known that’s what this was she would have been more jazzed about it and probably more interested in seeing it in the first place. She doesn’t know what she thought this was about but was pretty pleased with it.  -This show is super strong, and has so many triggers with things, I’m definitely a fan but I can see why maybe I didn’t hear much about it before. This also may be why it wound up cancelled. So much of it makes for fewer fans overall.  -This really was nostalgic for me in so many ways. It very much reminded me of some shows I used to love, and had SO SO many actors/actresses/directors that I’ve loved. Every familiar face showing up was like a little hello to me and it’s just been so fun to see them.  -My biggest things kind of were that it was nice to see these people grow from who the bodies used to be, but that it was so weird to think that all these people, besides David didn’t notice the complete shift in personalities. Are we really all so self absorbed that we don’t notice when someone we’re close to has such a major shift? I’d like to think that if I suddenly acted wholly different that someone would check on me a little better than the Travelers were checked on.  -I definitely see why this show was ‘edgy’ but I think I liked it much more than I disliked it. I did download season 2 from netflix and will keep watching, but I definitely am one to want to ‘finish’ a show/story despite if I like it or not. I’m pretty sure I do… but at the same time, I didn’t download it and slam it down like I usually do for shows. It feels a bit like Breaking Bad to me. I watched it and thought the whole time “I think I hate this” and then it ended and I realized that yes, I did in fact hate it. I don’t feel so strongly of dislike here though. I think maybe I just feel confused and torn. I love these characters, and I want better for them, but I hate the premise.  -When has a character coming from the future ever been a good thing? This whole “change small things to save the future” definitely made me think of Quantum Leap, with just the single leap. I also didn’t realize that the Director was a computer until way late in the game and once the character had already built the place for the Director to come to in the barn and it reminded me of power rangers, Then the Director was Zordon from Power Rangers while simultaneously Agent Smith from Matrix and I couldn’t really take that episode totally seriously anymore.  -Last thing was that I felt it was unrealistic the way that the travelers grew to care about their counterparts in the world. Not that they cared for them, but that they also apparently didn’t. I can’t imagine learning to care for someone so much, but then lying like that the way that they do. How could these apparently moral soldiers of this mega computer that are questioning (rightly) their choices not question the decision to lie to the people that have been supporting them so much. Marcy is really the only one that doesn’t seem to be on board (pre-reboot) and lets David know a little too much probably, even though she still lies. I feel like it's unreasonable here. But then again, this judgement is being passed on a dystopian show based on body snatching time travelers trying to move major planetary events around so I’m probably the one being unrealistic.  Maya - I am still not at all a fan of body snatcher shows. I can’t deal with the eww factor of it. Not just the body they are in having to go through all that pain at the end, but the people around them think they are still the person they knew/loved/hated.  Many big topics here Marci- developmentally challenged, Phillip - addiction, Carly- abusive ex, Mac - addiction to freaking job, Trevor- not sure what message they were trying to convey? Bully, parents relationship?  I really hated how Mac equated Trevors issues with his parents to Carly’s with her ex husband. Telling her to deal with it, Trevor doesn’t bother Mac about his issues. Uh, pretty similar to what most women in abusive relationships get treated, but um, SHE ISN’T ACTUALLY IN THAT RELATIONSHIP. I get that she cares about the baby, but it isn’t her baby. I just don’t know what to think to be honest.  Liked Phillips story line I think. It was a great message that addiction is more than something that can just be walked away from.  The trust in the director is annoying especially when we find out it is an ai. Like I guess I know which faction I’d be in lol. The whole show I kept questioning their trust in these decisions.  I was intrigued by the numbers. I liked knowing 14 and 27 and that Trevor was 115. I feel interested in their story.  My transcribed notes (aka scribbles): So much pain for the end of the lives. Screaming head pain! I quit watching the first time because I didn’t like the body snatches. They might have killed the guy who was going to kill the agent, but then the agent wasn’t dead but they brought the new guy into his head anyway? Kind of like killing him. Marci-disabled, mom-abused, kid-fought?, long hair-addict. If people keep coming back and they stop all these deaths wont the population be an issue? SO MANY RULES! Who is in charge? Why do the travelers trust them so much. Interested to learn more. Addiction is serious shit. Why didn’t another traveler use the friend who OD’d body? (*now I realize it is because they know that addiction is bad for a host body). Messengers being kids! They took that girl into danger biking. Protocol 3- we cant interfere. Protocol 6 don’t talk to other travelers. Protocol 5 resume your hosts life. Protocol?-dont save a life don't take a life. Philip is questioning the “rules”. Classic- teenager girlfriend is a bitch. Why is the baby daddy investigating the Marci thing? Trevor had something in his ear? Is he lying about the messenger. Glad someone is questioning even if it is the heroin addict. Protocol 2 - leave the future in the past. Older than all of them together but grounded. Protocol 1 - dedicated to the mission. The tough guy is dumb. One way information is annoying (and dangerous). Maybe job was to reel in the ego maniac? “Protocol 5 till then.” Misfires. Fun seeing Trevor’s wisdom in action in the cells. I like David but first few episodes a bit weird, like is anyone that put together? 5th cage, they were expecting all five. The Death in Dignity woman’s transition was INTENSE! 117 is over 100 years old “the engineer” kind of a boss lady. “Swan song” What’s the big deal with protocol 3 and not killing when they are all about to blow up? Why isn’t the gas working on the soldiers that show up? Why not start by taking over the main soldier guy? Is the director just messing with them? Memories. Darcy David spinal tap and the crazy KNife out of the Chest! Sex scene with mac and wife EWWWW of course she thinks/knows he’s cheating - sex is very personal. Meh episode. Regular life goes on. Marci buys off David’s boss. Two jobs for a few of them. Has Marci even gone back to the library she still says she works there. Camera shots are so odd. Super close or far at odd angels, see only one eye lots. David drinking his coffee alone in clean apartment makes me a bit jealous. Weird that people in the future live so long in a world without clean air etc. Carly didn’t go to turn him in because he said they think they know he’s a good family man. Stasis field like Doctor Who’s Break Out Ball. How did the EMT get there so fast? Maybe another traveler cell? Senator replacement high up. Now I’m just super mad. If the whole Helios plan didn’t work than maybe time to stop!? Convenient that Kat forgets the visit from the coop too. I would totally not believe I drank that much and didn’t realize it. All that technology and Trevor couldn’t get a pain killer for the yucky organ growing leech pain? Security guard acting like a cop. Memories of original McClaren when is sergers. No seat belt in keep with broken arm? I think they are going to travel to another time. Death scene/memories are boring- I liked Kat until this episode. When a re you from will definitely be back. The director is up to something. If they have all these computer skills and science skills why can’t the get an excused absence for Trevor or a job for Carly? Carly has anger issues. Not sure what to think a bout th baby. She should find a grandparent or something. Mac to Marci “there’s more to us then just our memories” um, isn’t that what gets transferred? 14 and 27 are low numbers. 27 looked like she got a message from the future on her bracelet? “Bad” faction. From where all our travelers are from, so it’s their family and friends. Computer vs. Human. Carly: I am unsure how I feel. I hate how she is treated by everyone and she has so little support, but it’s not actually her son. Reboot Marci is “less fragile”. Mac feels more connected to wife after near death experiences. This episode was kind of stupid with the ending everyone is so confused and the the FBI comes in. A bit too much maybe? It  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

What’s your word? Erised Wish Favorite character on this show? Steve Trevor Barbara before Technical Talking Points (music, lighting, editing): Hans Zimmer nails it again!  Lighting 1984 meh Theme song / 80’s music The color blue 2-3 favorite moments in the show: I wish Diana hadn’t needed Steve to tell her what the right thing to do was.  I liked the overarching lesson of the film. A lot of films we watch are just a story that may or more likely than not-- may not have happened, but you don’t feel different when you leave it behind. I can watch Speed (the movie) all day long, I’ve seen it over 200 times, but I’m not a different person because of it. It’s just a movie. I love Jack and his dedication to saving the passengers on a bus, but it’s so disconnected from myself. This film says something. I feel like the first film said “you can do anything if you have the right circumstances” but this film I felt like it was a reminder that sometimes unanswered prayers are something to be thankful for. Be careful what you wish for, you might get it.” Loved the invisible plane - lost the coffee cup lol Loved how inspiring she was to young children in the opening scene. I hope we see the little girl she threw into the teddy bears in the future as a grown up.  Confused about the electricity in the water not hurting diana? Glad they showed the amazons again. Super glad to see Lynda Carter as an amazon (loved that she wasn’t in heels!) A bit annoyed at the triteness of her love. Like why? A bit annoyed that we don’t learn more about the story of the artifact A bit annoyed at the reality of men accosting women constantly. Not much has changed since the 80’s there.  I enjoyed seeing wonder woman tired. I felt it.  I wish we had seen her modern day again. Hate war scenes, probably because I hate war.  Fight scenes were cool! What’s your word? Dead - Maya Byyyyeeeee Story Talking Points: Aesahattr - no explanation besides it’s important. Super annoying. Tired of being toyed with as an audience. This seems to be the new Mcguffin. Great.  Blue petals maybe leading Mary to Aesahattr? I WANT TO SAY THINGS AND I CAN’T.  Mrs. Coulter having a meltdown talking at her monkey. “What are you frightened of?” Kicks her own demon!? And later Joprey tells will “don’t argue with your true nature.” Learning that Lyra was Eve, Mother of All was done well, but should have been done 3 episodes ago.  Will and Lyra trying to decide if they should go off on their own or not. Will worried it isn’t safe for the adults, the adults worried it isn’t safe for the kids. Everyone thinking to hard and then they all end up screwing it up anyway. And now everyone is alone (facepalm). Joprey and Lee’s whole journey was a complete waste in my opinion. The whole point was to get Lyra the protection of the knife, and literally they are the reason they got separated. Why didn’t Joprey use his magic on the magisterium and why didn’t lee call Sarafina earlier?  Literally whole point seemed to be to get Will the cool Jacket (which he looks much better in than his dad.) Will and Jopari really bonding in the show vs in the book they find out moments before Jopari is killed that they are related. I don’t mind how it was changed but it shows a different side to will… in the book he wants to kill the witch that kills his father but she kills herself first and he doesn’t learn what her deal was for killing him. This they do get to bond and he builds up a rapport with him before he sacrifices himself to save will and for him to go on his journey. It was a nice change i think. Still seemed to fall flat... Yeah, the whole jopari leaving didn’t make much sense in the show it was like cool bye dont care bout you. Im gonna do my own thing and i don’t care about your promise. Where we leave everyone: Lee- dead Jopery - dead Random witches - dead Sarafina - flying alone Ruta skati - going to look for the unknown aesahattr Mary - finding some unknown blue petal thing Will - “the night is full of angels and the will guide you” Mrs. Coulter - on some random boat going “somewhere they will be safe.” Lyra - unconscious in a chest  Roger - in some shadow realm asking for Lyra’s help Asriel - talking to Angels to start a war Favorite character this episode? Ruta Skati? Or Will? But I have small issues with both. HESTER (rip) Technical Talking Points (music, lighting, editing): I was very intrigued by the words being sung to the theme music. I liked it, and I like how it made me keep listening long enough to see Roger at the end. The faraway shots of the mountain range are cool. Jopari’s Demon killing the other deamon was intense… the monkey with the specters was also stressful and poor monkey!!!  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Destiny Unexpected control Favorite character this episode? Mary --but it was close Monkey Coulter - she is so awful but when she killed boreal hahahahaha i was never your equal. Technical Talking Points (music, lighting, editing): This isn’t technical but it needs to be recorded: I need Serafina to be my BFF. Can I be her when I grow up? Who was it I said I wanted to be before? I changed my mind Its serafina.  I love the angelic lighting on Mary Malone.  The lightning and the bird attack was so cool!!! Made it better seeing it then reading the book i could really imagine it!  This scene is just more intense than the book and i like it more. 2-3 favorite moments in the show: Re: Serafina’s Leave Now -- If Lyra had listened to Pan say that in the first episode none of this would have happened.  The back and forth with Lyra and Will was so cute and so BFF. I’ve said shitty mean things/lashed out at friends and then realized it. Bonding talking about his mother and how these kids were mean for no reason. (it is so much more intense in the book oof) he couldn’t have friends T_T  I wish we saw more of his hand being real bloody and dripping like it does in the book. It doesn’t seem like he is really in pain during this episode :/  The angelica and paula and Mary interaction was so cute and just ugh.  Coulter and the specters whaaaat!!! They looked so cool and what a powerful moment  She has these really intense shots where she just stands there looking intense.  In the book it mentioned that they “forgot they were tied to the ground” when she took control of them and they were able to fly now (AHHHH) Coulter and Boreal This place the window, all the things you kept from me, it would have been so much easier to tell me when you had lyra (or something) your ambitions were small, they would have always ended here. Boreal i don't need you, you would only hold me back. You are not , nor hav ever been my equal.  THE SNAKE all curled up eek! Fuck the patrearchy  Almost everyone gets exactly what they deserve.  What’s your word? Buckle-up Promises Favorite character this episode? The Monkey  Coulter MONKEY…. So I guess Coulter’s soul?  Technical Talking Points (music, lighting, editing): The make-up on on Will’s face bruising The knife slicing is so cool. When the machine shuts down! Omg in the book she sets fire to everything and crushes a floppy disk hahaha way cooler in the book but also the cloud exists soooo of course you gotta change things Story Talking Points: Lyra and Will - planning to get the alethiometer When they run into angelica and paula seeing tulio zombi-fied… when you are in pain you gotta blame someone and it was kinda their fault and with no rules kids can go a little overboard (lord of the flies like) ha  Mrs. Coulter and Boreal - using each other, boreal’s use of the world for self rather than bettering their original world Found it interesting right in the beginning: appearance of freedom, culture of consumerism not faith.  There is a point where the music is playing and she says “can you make that stop?” I get that - sometimes I can’t think when background music is playing.  Was he trying to be smooth and like get with coulter here? Music in the bg he lays out on the couch and she is like shut it off not  interested haha They were talking about Dr Malone and how coulter (i want to start calling her dr cuz she so would have had a doctorate in this world haha) and boreal described her impertinent, intelligent, free vs. arrogant. And then boreal had the gall to tell her what to do in a “calm down you are hysterical…” type situation. This pissed me off oooooo i wanna punch him. She is trying to talk with him and explain the stupid shit she has had to deal with - she brings up her shit with asriel and boreal is like why we talking bout your ex ughhhhhh when she just wanted to talk about herself so even in her story the man is the main subject.  Mrs coulter + her daemon Her daemon is so scared and stressed when she leaves but coulter seems indifferent. (those shoulders on her blazer are so sharp) surely i’m not the first woman capable of self control - have you never encountered witches on your encounters” when talking to boreal.  HOW DOES SHE KNOW HOW TO DRIVE!!!!!!!?!?!’;ejfgf;ijikjvnd Also stupid side note… this monkey sounds like my dog when he grunts and stuff XD  Mrs Coulter and Mary Malone - women in general - ironic that the statement about “Dr.” happened in this episode when the news story about Dr. Jill Biden was a big story this week  Coulter, “mrs. malone” Dr. Malone, ”Dr.” she has no time for this bs she has studies to publish! “You must be so proud” and mrs coulter is kinda stunned  Dr. Malone asks where she got her doctorate and papers she has published and very interested in learning from her and she cant say because she wasn’t allowed to do any of that (stop cutting onions) Im more and more impressed with what coulter had to deal with during all this. Like how hard she had to work to be in the power she is in. “ Free (Malone) vs arrogant (Mrs. Coulter)  The scene with Mary googling Mrs. Coulter was sad for me. It hit home that if they had google in Lyra’s world she still wouldn’t have seen Mrs. Coulter’s name pop up on any research. Go into Maxx’s learnings about trans too  Lyra and her mother - Lyra becomes angry and retaliates (face just like her mothers when she attacked her over the purse) Mrs. Coulter’s self-control to stand while her monkey is being hurt.  Lyra doesn’t want to be like her mother she wants to be more like Ma costa (last season all about mimicking those she was around) Will says “you don’t have to be like any of them, you are great (not exact quote.)” Magisterium- short little scene, lease favorite guy used as scapegoat This was awesome! And scary Mary going into Chiticazi (spelling sucks) I am worried for her lol but I know she will be fine. 2-3 favorite moments in the show: Ya’ll, they buckled the monkey in!  THIS WAS SO CUTE!!!! I feel like Mrs. Coulter is finally angry for the right reasons. Coulter and boreals relationship is interesting… part of me is offput that she is kinda leading him on cuz she knows he is into her but putting on this fake act. also do what you gotta do to have power in a world that doesn’t allow women to get ahead/have any.  But knowing her im sure she has said she is not interested and he won’t stop so she can use it to her advantage? Maybe i am overthinking all of this.  This episode was very feminism-esque (i cant think of the right series of words) Coulter being confused how could a woman be a scholar the old white dudes sitting at a table “the men, and heaven help us, women(whispered), have been arrested” like the women are starting to think for themselves we fucked…? Coulter being so freaked by dr. malone and how she was able to publish papers but coulter can’t b/c patriarchy - she starts to think about what she could have done if she was born in this world.  Is this just performative saying there is this thing but not doing much about it? Also it is still hard for women to get ahead in this world (and even harder for black, indigineous, and women of color) they could have mentioned that it is still a shit show here? Have more women on the staff or even better to direct a show that is about strong female leads.  27 producers / ~ 9 female - 4 worked on 14-15 of the episodes in contrast to 9 Combined show # male : 182 shows # female : 99 I dunno what i was looking for here but i got distracted thanks adhd for making me look at numbers and then get more confused  OMG NOW I AM ON A DEEP DIVE OF HIS TWITTER At one point he was like “what side am i supposed to be on trans ppl or not…”!”!”! Uahdlfabhdldfugaldfju what and then he badly corrected his statement and im so confused.... Ok so respects JK Rowlings right to say whatever she wants but doesn’t support what she said. Doesn’t believe that there are only two sides and has thought about introducing a trans character into his books “it would be difficult, as it is difficult in our world” soooo that is something?    See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Theres a fight, will loses fingers, john perry and lee meet, coulter and boreal thru the window What’s your word? Confused careing Story talking points: Lyra and Will Finding the way into the tower a bit lame, but I did like them opening the door together and the discussion they had about who goes first. And the look of going upstairs. The fight scene was ok, I generally get bored in fight scenes especially when they are shot up close, I can’t seem to follow along.  Pan says “I’ve got the knife.” Pan comforting Will. Lyra saying you can’t shut the pain out, you have to accept it and work with it. I know it hurts. Bath scene mirrors her in the bath and roger visiting. But she is the helper and support. She is learning.  Lee is on the way to help her find the person she has already found. She doesn’t really need his help, but I think she needs his belief.  Mrs. Coulter and Boreal -Carlo? How many freaking names lol-  -keeps her cool when he tells her about the windows to worlds  - her face when she is at the window is so cool And snakeskin shoes lol poor boreal. Lee and Joprey -  -I was annoyed by Hester’s voice -I was disappointed in Grumen, I wanted to really like his character.  -It was cool how his shaman fingers moved at the end to make the wind move like Lyra does for the alethiometer. -How the heck did he end up with a daemon?  -Joprey says about asriel “don’t confuse the man with the mission.” I have thoughts. He also says the “right side”. There is an obsession again with answers and clarity.  Witches and Magisterium -again I wish I felt more connected to these women. I should, because I want to be and know enough to feel like I should be, but I feel like they keep the viewers as outsiders.  -war table and guns vs an ice pick. Ruta skati - “Ariel needs to return and finish what he started.” ? I am confused by this line. Mary Malone -The second she hears defense funding she says no - leave. - Her face when he says “I’ve always admired a woman with a good work ethic.” - I hate the scene with her talking to the dark matter in the cave. It sounds pompous. “Evidently.” Us-uncountable billions - angels - making, stimulating, guiding. “Vengeance.” Favorite character this episode? Will Technical Talking Points (music, lighting, editing): Will punching the kid and didn’t even grimmace.  The knife is so cool, and the cutting and sealing of windows is cool. The colors of Mrs. Coulter’s clothes. Red for bad ass in your face, teal for I just want to fit in. (Like the wives in that on show.) Whatever you do, don’t lose the… what do you mean you lost it? Lyra leaves to try to find more about dust, does not tell Will and gets in a bunch of trouble. While lyra is in the other world being found out her world is slowly dying and some serious bonding is happening. What’s your word? Race Oops Feels Slow Story talking points: (I am going to lead the conversation by character rather than sequence since it jumps around so much finishing up with Lyra) Witches and iorek- Bird tells Iorik about Lyra’s destiny and he is mad that they are usingLyra as a toy. Azreal hole in the sky is messing with everyone because of the weather (seals, fog cant see with telescope, fog stops Mrs coulter from traveling) It's nice to see Iorek again.  I thought it was going to be a massive spoiler. I think I missed this. Lee and Mrs Coulter- Starts with Grumman calling to the wind and Lee “return” The ring is not what Joey expected Lee in the bar “now that we are friends” lol  Lee’s face when the guy calls Grumman a heretic - he and Hester have a look like we gotta get out of here. He says “amen” cool as can be I thought Ms. Coulter was pretty consistent but Manuel’s acting just ruined Lee for me in this scene. Both of them interacted weirdly because of it. Hester and Lee : “he gave you no choice, you didn't shoot to kill” obviously doesn’t like killing people... Did anyone else notice Lee’s Texan accent all but disappears in this moment? And I don’t think it came back.  ^^^ THIS ^^^^  I was thinking it was def less pronounced in this episode and it just slowly disappears like wut. Mrs Coulter “I’m her mother.” Lee “so” Lee sees on her face that she went through the same abusive childhood “of course you did”  I believed it, I was grateful when it came. - it wont break me and you know it because it wouldn’t break you either. Hester nuzzles him and Mrs coulter goes to the brick wall. Monkey tries to tentatively hold her hand (she allows it) Boreal decides to tellMrs coulter. It must have been before the happenings with Lyra this episode because of post taking time, so why tell her now? ^Joey has a reason for that “People will be looking for her not all of them good. If you find her please, keep her safe” Also do daemons bleed? hester didn’t seem as injured as lee THE MONKEY JUST TOSSES THAT SNAKE DAEMON AFTER SMASHING ITS HEAD INTO THE GROUND WHATTTTTT SO GOOD AND SO UPSETTING Why didn’t the snake dissolve into nothing like the other daemons?  Guess he’s not dead? Mary Malone- (No y)  Saves Lyra helps her get away. Asks simple question need simple answer - cave doesn’t give it to her, but universe does. At home great with her niece and nephew too. Sister says break through at home.  She reads I Ching at home and the cave reacts. I liked that she was more worried about how she was doing instead of where she was like everyone else seems to be focusing on. And once she found out she was safe her whole demeanor changed Will left behind- Conversation with creepy girl #1 - ghost in the tower built by the guild (group of men) philosophers. Tabitha is the creepy girl  Wiki says her name is angelica  I came back to fix that just now, I’m glad you caught it too!  It was cool to get the information this way vs in the book. You hear the same thing twice which was annoying but kinda fun to see an adult tell it vs a kid telling it. Lyra and Boreal in the car- He calmly explains to her how to fasten her seatbelt. “My mother will be worried.” “I’m sure she will” Did anyone else scream at Lyra right then? Just me? Okay.  Boreal’s Face omg! Lyra and Will- He so quickly forgives her and they work together to try to solve the problem Pan watching the movie is the cutest. Cheesy Paddington Bear going through a portal window.   Are they gonna bench switch on me?  Legit haven’t seen paddington sooooooo does that movie connect with this show in a way or what is the connection why this movie? Hahaha her eating popcorn (my comfort food) “this tastes horrible, then stop eating it, no” dead. Lyra and will and Boreal at the end- I’m a collector - you’re a thief )this is a bit of a heavy conversation, but important.  Shoshie for the win- not specifically the magisterium getting the knife, but Boreal is the more worthy nemesis I think. “We’ll get your knife” will standing up and the look on his face like Lyra you are crazy to be so brave, but I got your back, while still being cautious. This scene in the book is intense! Pan leaps out in cat form to attack and he isn’t freaked by it at all and will catch a glimpse of his snake daemon oof so cool. Favorite character this episode? Hard today. - Hester I had typed something but I changed my mind, I have a lot of favorites. Kinda don’t know who to choose… coulter perhaps.. You see a lot of her and learn more about why she is the way she is and she opens up a little and trusts someone Technical Talking Points (music, lighting, editing): The clothes in the mining town Lee goes to  Shot above chili Anne The color palette in the town with Lee was absolutely luscious. Best part of the episode LOL I Ching - bagua map matches the interior seating of the magisterium The book that Mary uses for her journaling! Love it. The leather snapping pouch that the letters are kept in Using Pan as a look out on the run was so much fun. Boreal has the coolest car, I’m disappointed I do not also have the coolest car.  Was disappointed in Lyra a little this episode Hester’s face when she watches the Daemon particulate.  The shots were so nice! They really paid attention to how each town and place is different. You can tell there are different people living there with different cultures and languages and style of dress. There was lots of thought into how they live and stuff.  Seemed like there were more daemons in shots like big shots  The noise when the daemons walk is too cute! In the bar hesters little hops and pans everything The fur blowing in the wind when hester is in the balloon and Ioreks neck skin flapping in the wind a bit haha  Joey has a thing about wants/needs she wants to talk about Joey will do a Pateron/ follow us ploy again.  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Show Name: His Dark Materials Season/Episode: Season 2 Episode 1 Episode Title: The City of Magpies Date Aired: November 16, 2020 Where Aired: HBO/BBC Plot Summary in a sentence We are in a super beautiful, creepy place with random creepy kids and zombie adults: I know we just met, but you make a good omelet - let’s be friends, maybe, (but I still don’t trust you.), and also my mom is still up to crazy duplicitous shit in my old world. Will and lyra start an adventure together and bond over eggs and how their worlds are alike but with the words mixed up. Story Talking Points (plot, characters): -glad we got at least a moment of sorrow for Roger -Pan seemed to talk a lot more -Witch killing other witch -Creepy kids -Specters only attack adults, super similar to dust, but obviously more evil -What if the cat is Will’s demon but since his dad has magic (from the trailers) he can be far from it and just doesn’t know? That might be too far fetched cause how disconnected would he have to be with his soul to not know. -still a bit meh on Will, want to like him more I’m bored of lyra. Im worried they are doing the same thing that happened with hermione/ron in the movies where they made her too perfect (not the right word) and made ron almost not important. So she was a strong character but unrealistic. but there is something about her that just makes her seem so flat. The books she shows emotions other than independent nonchalant and does have to rely on will for some help. This book is more about will so far than lyra and the show just kinda shoves him aside.    I like the chemistry between the two, they seem to joke well and get along so that is nice If you keep acting like an adult the specters are gonna get you Your world is like my world with the words mixed up OR your word is like mine After meeting the girls will says lyra is the odd one cuz they didn’t have daemons This is the first episode where i am legit grumpy and it was so hard to watch it a second time i kept getting distracted. Im so confused why they changed some of the stuff they did, like rutas personality and why are the witches so dang powerful?! That scene of her attacking everyone so easily was meh we knew it would be fine i have zero connection to it. I don’t mind when they do change things because different medium but this better make sense later on or what is the damn point. Mrs coulter telling whats his face that she will kill that dude so he can be in charge. And the guys being all grumpy that a WOMAN cannot take control >:(   ← this is what they looked like hahaha Mrs coulter taking her jewelry off to torture the witch with a pair of tweezers had me laughing.  (the book she was breaking fingers and they had been torturing the witch for a while) WHATS HER FACE BIT THE CAPS OFF THE DRINKS WTF HOW!? What’s your word? Setup Trust Favorite character this episode? Winner for me is creepy girl #1 I definitely recognize her from somewhere (game of thrones) No one. i want to like will more but they took many of his moments from the book and gave them to lyra or cut them out.  Technical Talking Points (music, lighting, editing): -Love the staircases that are also in the starting credits -Fun seeing Pan as a few new animals, maybe more time could be invested since there are less daemons around? -Music still great -Still feel that the quick second scenes are by far and away the best parts of this show (witch killing, the moment that Will and Lyra are both looking at the things they are keeping secret to find answers.) -A few too many shadows for me, but maybe they did it on purpose. -Looked up credits and less women than I expected. Lead writer is a man who also wrote Enola Holmes another strong woman lead. I am pleased with his take generally. Seemed like there were more demons in this episode The visuals were amazing! The stairs are such a fun visual and how they were repeated throughout They did a good job of making the city look like how it was mentioned in the book. They were more prone to patching things than tearing it down and building a new one.  costume/outfit choice for mrs coulter was horrible. Also lyras jumpsuit thing? Like outfits were not fun. So frumpy and ugly. Loved Paulas hair wrap thing tho and the witches hair and outfits were awesome. How they introduced the knife even larger in the opening credits was an odd choice to me the other additions i enjoyed tho See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
