In this enlightening episode of Some Joyful Noises, we delve into the profound thematic interplay between music and visual storytelling, specifically focusing on the comic "Middlewest" by Skottie Young. Our esteemed colleague Josh Patterson presents an intriguing discussion, proposing a curated selection of six songs - five Midwest Emo songs and 1 extra - that he posits would serve as an evocative soundtrack for the comic's narrative journey. Engaging in a thoughtful dialogue with Joshua Noel and TJ Blackwell, we explore the emotional resonance of these tracks, elucidating how they encapsulate the essence of the characters and their struggles. Each song is meticulously analyzed, highlighting its relevance to the overarching themes of identity, familial conflict, and personal growth that permeate "Middlewest."This episode stands as a testament to the symbiotic relationship between music and graphic literature, inviting listeners to reflect on their own experiences as they navigate the poignant landscapes crafted by Young's artistry. Welcome to part two of our five part series on soundtracks! This episode is specifically for parents with kids. I'm pulling three random soundtracks from our Parents with Kids card deck and breaking down why they matter. You'll discover why you can fast forward childhood but you can't rewind it (and what that means for decisions like when to give your kid a phone), why tired beats regretful (a soundtrack my daughter taught me when she studied abroad in London), and why family shows up (even when it's a three year old's birthday party or driving a 24 foot Penske truck down the East Coast). These aren't just nice ideas. They're the repetitive thoughts that turn into remarkable actions that turn into remarkable results. If you're a parent trying to navigate the narrow window of childhood, this episode will give you language for the culture you want to create in your family.Grab your very own Soundtracks Card DeckMake sure to follow me on Instagram and share with your friends!Keep up with my book list on GoodReads!Sign up for my newsletter, Try This!Book me to speak at your event or to your team! You can grab a copy of my book All It Takes Is a Goal from your favorite bookstore or at my website!Sign up for the Remarkable You Community today!

Still Becoming reframes healing as growth rather than recovery. The song speaks to wholeness that doesn't come from returning to who you were, but from embracing who you're becoming. It carries a hopeful, grounded message about identity, self-love, and moving forward with clarity and peace.

Send us a message, so we know what you're thinking! When we watch movies & shows at the movies or, increasingly, on TV, the soundtrack is ever-present to set the mood and enhance the story. But we never stop to consider its' role, how it's changed over the years, and how it interacts with other elements, such as the title sequence. This episode we look at how the use of soundtracks has changed over the last 30 or more years and consider some very creative soundtracks! In Rock News, we look at The Hollywood Vampires, Cyndi Lauper, Deep Purple, David Lee Roth and Devo, who are all heading out on the road, while the latest fad out of the US is Lollipop Star, a sweet that plays a tune as you suck it! Gurdip, Justin and John quickly gathered last night to discuss initial impressions of the soundtrack album for EPiC which is now available on all major music platforms for purchase and streaming. At the time of recording, John's the only one to have seen the film, so we're judging it based on how it works as its own cohesive presentation, keeping in mind that like all Baz Luhrmann soundtracks, it's a companion piece, but also a standalone work. There's plenty of hubbub in the Elvis community about the remixing and re-recording of some elements for the soundtrack, but we have exclusive insights on some of the creative choices made for the film and album from Jamieson Shaw, music producer and supervising music editor on EPiC. Shaw very kindly responded to some questions we asked him via email, which John reads aloud for us on this episode (though without attempting Jamieson's Australian accent). We also break down plenty of the new mash-ups and discover the component elements from across Elvis's catalogue that were utilized in devising these more artful reinterpretations. We recommend checking out the soundtrack for yourself on your preferred music platform or choice or available physically on CD/vinyl from Sony Music!
Running a town is an act of stewardship — of land, money, people, and possibility.Ojai City Manager Ben Harvey joins host Bret Bradigan for a candid, wide-ranging conversation about what that stewardship looks like in practice. We unpack the real constraints of municipal governance — housing mandates, fiscal realities, and the delicate balance between preservation and change. And then we talk music. From Jonathan Richman and the Modern Lovers to Okkervil River and Damien Jurado, we reflect on how live music shapes community — and tease some exciting possibilities for Libbey Bowl this coming season.Because in Ojai, civic life isn't just policy. It's culture. It's memory. It's the shared experience of gathering under the oaks for a show.A conversation not just about how towns are run, but how they are felt.

What if three simple phrases could transform your relationship? In this episode, I'm kicking off a brand new five part series on soundtracks by diving into the couples deck. I'm pulling three cards at random and breaking down why these soundtracks matter for your marriage or relationship. You'll discover why every good relationship costs the same exact thing (hint: it's not money), why you should never, ever ask your spouse to be your accountability partner (seriously, change that setup right now if that's you), and how crisis magnifies kindness in ways you can't imagine. Plus, I'll share why you should never make big decisions when you have crisis brain and what a double thumbs up from a stranger during COVID taught me about small gestures. Whether you celebrated Valentine's Day or not, these soundtracks will help you build a stronger, healthier, more fun relationship. In This Episode:Grab your very own Soundtracks Card DeckMake sure to follow me on Instagram and share with your friends!Keep up with my book list on GoodReads!Sign up for my newsletter, Try This!Book me to speak at your event or to your team! You can grab a copy of my book All It Takes Is a Goal from your favorite bookstore or at my website!Sign up for the Remarkable You Community today!
The finale of The Road to First Light series is here. I am beyond excited for the upcoming James Bond game from IO Interactive and to close out this series I thought it would be appropriate to discuss at least one game that IO developed, the game that got me into the Hitman series, Hitman 2016. I am joined by Seth from the Classic Gaming Brothers podcast to talk about why this game is so damn good. What makes it unique compared to most other 3rd person action games out there and how it feels like IO is the perfect fit for the Bond license. Some movies gave us unforgettable moments—but Waiting to Exhale gave us a soundtrack that felt like group therapy before group chats existed. This week, we're revisiting the songs that defined 90s womanhood, friendship, and emotional release—no ashtray required. On this bonus episode of No More Late Fees, hosts Jackie and Danielle are joined by Meah and Trish from the Shit Black Girls Watch podcast to deep-dive into the iconic Waiting to Exhale soundtrack. Produced by Babyface and stacked with legendary voices, this album didn't just support the film—it became the emotional backbone for an entire generation. From tear-stained car rides to “I quit” anthems, these songs hit different then and still hit now.Throughout the episode, the crew drafts their MVP tracks, debates best vocal performances, crowns underrated gems, and assigns very specific life uses to each song—like quitting a job, dragging a man on the phone, or calling your best friend after everything falls apart. Along the way, they share behind-the-scenes facts, personal nostalgia, character-driven context from the film, and plenty of funny, passionate fandom hot takes about Mary J. Blige, Brandy, Toni Braxton, Whitney Houston, SWV, and more.If you love 90s R&B, movie soundtracks that carry emotional weight, pop culture nostalgia, and smart, funny conversations rooted in friendship and lived experience, this episode belongs on your playlist.Enjoying the episode? Simon Franglen is a multi-award-winning British composer and record producer whose music has been included in some of the most critically acclaimed films of recent decades. Franglen composed the acclaimed score for James Cameron's AVATAR: THE WAY OF WATER in 2023, after his collaboration with the late James Horner on the original film in 2009. He received a 2023 World Soundtrack Award and a 2022 IFMCA Award for his efforts. His score was praised for expanding the sonic world of Pandora with both epic scale and profound intimacy and was a global hit, with the soundtrack album surpassing 750 million global streams. Over the past two years, he has continued his collaboration with Cameron on AVATAR: FIRE AND ASH, released in December 2025, a score that introduced major new themes, textures, and innovative electronica to the AVATAR musical universe. In January 2026, for TALKING SOUNDTRACKS, Jason Drury had the pleasure of talking to Simon via Zoom at his home in Los Angeles. During the interview, they talked about Simon's work on the AVATAR franchise, how he became involved in film music and his relationship and collaboration with the late great James Horner. Was macht deutsche Filme aus?
What Didn't Happen mourns the quiet grief of unrealized futures — the plans imagined, the life envisioned, and the timelines that never unfolded. The song centers on learning how to grieve without bitterness, surrender expectations without shame, and trust that growth can still come from what never was.

After the Fireworks explores the moment when excitement fades and love is tested by reality. The song challenges the idea that chemistry alone can sustain a relationship, focusing instead on what remains when the noise quiets and feelings settle. It reflects on choosing substance over spark and honesty over illusion.

Change is inevitable, so embrace it. OK, maybe it's not always as positive as all that. But change presents opportunity, and even if you dread it, you can usually find a silver lining to the dark cloud. Music can help with any kind of change. Naturally there are songs about embracing a new relationship and songs about moving on from a bad one. Yet music addresses everything from adopting a positive attitude to escaping an oppressive environment to facing down the grieving process. In this episode of "How We Heard It," your hosts explore songs about change and suggest some of the better ones to help you get to where you want to be. Meanwhile, host Wayne Bledsoe talks about his ambitions and plans for his upcoming retirement from his day job, inspiring both happiness and envy in his co-hosts. Then, as they sometimes do, Wayne, Chuck and John go off on a tangent, this time talking about some of their weirdest jobs. One of them used to dress as a rabbit and deliver singing messages. Another used to search through beans at a restaurant, looking for rocks. And the third used to deal blackjack at pop-up casinos for business conventions. They were fun jobs while they lasted, but the guys all moved on. Because as Sheryl Crow sings, "A change will do you good."
