Jennifer Poland and Darryl Gurney each developed their own unique healing modalities over the years, guided by personal experience and spiritual insight. In 2021, a profound calling from the Divine led them to relocate to a more secluded environment—an intentional retreat to receive sacred wisdom that would deepen and expand their healing work. During this transformative period, Jennifer channeled a spiritually inspired book titled The Way to Peace, released on Amazon in November 2024. Together, they embarked on an inner journey of revelation, confronting ancestral and collective patterns, and transmuting them through personal healing. This inner alchemy awakened a resonance that now flows through their work, supporting not only individual transformation but also the broader wave of global awakening.Jennifer Poland | Darryl Gurney
In a compelling virtual roundtable hosted by Steve Gurney on the Positive Aging Community platform, three seasoned Aging Life Care Managers (ALCMs) shared their expertise and personal journeys on September 10, 2025. Featuring Samantha McDaniel of Aging Individualized (Maryland), Leslie Mason of Seabury Care Management (DC metro area), and Annette Murphy of Spring Point at Home (New Jersey), the discussion offered a deep dive into the holistic role of ALCMs, addressing real-world challenges like dementia care, emergency preparedness, and family dynamics. Spanning 14 pages of transcribed insights, this session provided actionable strategies for families and professionals alike. The panelists' diverse backgrounds underscored the adaptability of ALCMs. Samantha McDaniel, a solo practitioner with over 10 years in senior living, founded Aging Individualized to deliver personalized care across Maryland and virtually. Her shift from community roles to home-based support was driven by a desire to "impact change" directly where clients live. Leslie Mason, a clinical manager at Seabury since 2004, transitioned from teaching and pediatric social work after a chance hospital encounter with a care manager, now serving older and disabled adults in the DC region. Annette Murphy, leading Spring Point's home division, brought a geriatrics-focused career from therapy and social work, joining the field after mentorship from a national ALCM, seeking freedom to follow clients' needs.Annette Murphy clarified the ALCM role, noting that the term “Aging Life Care” is trademarked by the Aging Life Care Association (ALCA), requiring vetted members to adhere to a strict code of ethics. With backgrounds in social work, nursing, gerontology, or recreation therapy, ALCMs assess the “whole person”—physical, emotional, social, and environmental needs—crafting tailored care plans. Gurney likened them to “wedding planners,” “quarterbacks,” or “wing people” for aging, emphasizing their role in resource navigation and mediation. Leslie Mason added that ALCMs are “big thinkers” who dive into details to enhance quality of life, while the ALCA's eight knowledge areas (e.g., health, housing, legal) guide their practice. Families can find local ALCMs via the ALCA website by zip code.Dementia Care and Initiating Change (Samantha McDaniel): McDaniel noted a rise in calls from families struggling to start conversations with loved ones with dementia. In one case, a woman with mid-stage dementia, isolated and calling ambulances frequently, shifted to assisted living after McDaniel's questions about quality of life—“What do you wake up for?”—led to a self-initiated respite stay where she thrived. She emphasized ALCMs as mediators, helping families navigate resistance objectively.Young Onset Dementia and Dual Needs (Leslie Mason): Mason highlighted the growing challenge of young onset dementia (e.g., Alzheimer's under 65), where resources for older or middle-aged adults fall short. Seabury's information line addresses this “heartbreaking” gap, while she also supports parents of adult children with disabilities facing physical limits, requiring dual-age management.Emergency Preparedness as a Gift (Annette Murphy): Murphy introduced a crisis planning kit, mandated for Spring Point clients, covering evacuation plans, water shutoffs, and “go bags” with emergency contacts. Inspired by her FEMA experience, she framed it as a “roadmap” for solo elders and out-of-state families, addressing power outages and snowstorms. This initiative, expandable to all ALCMs, offers peace of mind.Handling Complex Family Dynamics (Tina's Case): Tina's question about a verbally threatening mother, despite a social worker's involvement, led to suggestions: home-visiting physicians for documentation, psychiatric crisis intervention if needed, and building a professional network. The panel urged assessing competence and risk, offering post-call consultations.

In a recent discussion hosted by Steve Gurney of the Positive Aging Community, Lisa Pahl, a licensed clinical social worker and co-creator of The Death Deck, shared insights into her innovative tool designed to spark meaningful conversations about end-of-life decisions. With 18 years of experience in hospice care and eight years in emergency medicine, Pahl identified a critical gap in how families approach death and dying. Too often, the absence of prior discussions leads to conflict and distress when making healthcare decisions during a medical crisis. The Death Deck, created in 2018, aims to bridge this gap by encouraging open dialogue in a lighthearted yet profound way. Pahl, who became the sole CEO of The Death Deck after buying out her business partner in 2025, continues to expand its reach. What is The Death Deck? The Death Deck is a card game designed to make end-of-life conversations more approachable. By incorporating humor and multiple-choice questions, it helps individuals and families discuss sensitive topics without the heaviness that often accompanies them. Pahl explained that the deck was born out of her desire to reduce chaos and uncertainty at the end of life by empowering people to share their preferences well before a crisis. In 2023, Pahl and her team expanded their offerings with the EOL (End of Life) Deck, a professional tool tailored for hospice and palliative care settings. This deck adopts a softer tone with less humor, focusing on detailed end-of-life preferences.A third deck, the Dementia Deck, is set to launch on September 1st in collaboration with Compassion and Choices. This deck, inspired by their Dementia Values and Priorities Tool, helps individuals articulate care preferences for different stages of dementia, addressing a condition many fear more than death itself. Why These Conversations MatterPahl emphasized that discussing end-of-life wishes is like exercising a muscle—it requires practice to become comfortable. Many avoid these conversations due to fear, believing that talking about death might somehow hasten it. The Death Deck's cards prompt reflection on personal and family attitudes toward death. For example, one card asks, “Growing up, my family dealt with death by: A) talking openly, sharing feelings, stories, and dark humor; B) in a no-nonsense sort of way—shit happens, you move on; or C) keeping it all bottled up and avoiding any discussion.” Pahl shared that her upbringing leaned toward options A and B, with humor often used to cope, while Gurney noted that his family leaned toward avoidance, but his professional work has shifted his perspective, encouraging more open dialogue. How The Death Deck is UsedThe Death Deck serves as a versatile tool for both families and professionals. For families, it provides a structured yet approachable way to discuss end-of-life wishes, often using humor to ease tension. Professionals, particularly in hospice and palliative care, find the cards useful for initiating conversations without making patients or families feel overly vulnerable. As Pahl noted, “It feels a little less vulnerable when I am reading something off a card than if I'm just staring into your eyes asking how you feel about visitors as you're declining.”A Tool for Living WellUltimately, The Death Deck is not just about preparing for death—it's about living more intentionally. As Pahl and Gurney discussed, reflecting on end-of-life preferences often prompts people to prioritize relationships and values in the present. For those interested in exploring this tool, The Death Deck and its companion decks are available at thedeathdeck.com, where additional resources and a blog provide further support for end-of-life planning. As Pahl's work demonstrates, embracing these conversations can transform fear into empowerment, ensuring that both life and death are approached with clarity and connection.
Today, we're joined by two very special guests—the Carters themselves! Pamela Roylance and Stan Ivar are here to discuss the episode “Alden's Dilemma” and share some of their favorite memories from Little House on the Prairie. But that's not all!Pamela and Stan are also starring in A.R. Gurney's beloved play Love Letters, directed by none other than Little House casting director Susan McCray. You can catch them live at the Whitefire Theatre, starting tonight—August 21st through August 31st!In “Alden's Dilemma,” Mr. Edwards smells trouble—and it's not just his long johns. A suspiciously charming young minister arrives in Walnut Grove, and suddenly, he's getting more house calls from Laura and Mrs. Carter than Doc Baker during flu season. Naturally, Edwards assumes the worst: romance, scandal, and maybe even poetry. Meanwhile, poor Reverend Alden starts to wonder if he's about to be replaced by a younger model with better hair and shinier sermons.Meanwhile, in a completely unrelated subplot that feels like it wandered in from another show, Almanzo and John Carter take a bro-trip to San Francisco, where they stay in a Japanese-style hotel, get mugged by a sweet-looking grandma, tossed in jail, and generally fumble their way through the city like two prairie dads lost in a big-city sitcom. The phrase "I'm not ready yet" is a common refrain in elder care, as Steve Gurney, founder of the Positive Aging Community, shared in a 2025 webinar. Heard daily for 35 years, it reflects hesitation to plan for aging, from housing to legal prep. A community-driven discussion, sparked by surveys and a concise PowerPoint, unpacked this sentiment's roots, risks, and solutions. What It MeansGurney's slides listed key triggers: aversion to age-segregated living, affordability fears, emotional downsizing burdens, resistance to strangers in the home, and denial of health decline. Participants added depth via chat: Pam said, “We don't see ourselves as old. I'm frozen at age 53.” Dixie noted, “Folks aren't ready to face mortality.” These reflect self-perception and fear, often tied to ageism—prejudice against one's future self. Why We HesitateEmotional attachment to homes, financial uncertainty, and independence fears drive delays. Gurney highlighted longevity concerns: with people living past 90, costs loom large. Health denial—“I'm fine now”—blocks planning for scenarios like dementia. Attendees like Wally feared becoming a burden, while Joe said it's easier to imagine death than incapacitation.Risks of DelayProcrastination limits options, as Gurney's slide warned. Health crises or emergencies force rushed choices, reducing control. Early planning ensures choice in living arrangements and access to benefits like social programs or peace of mind. Phyllis shared her mother's 19-year dementia journey, showing aging in place is possible but tough without prep.Helping OthersTo counter “I'm not ready yet,” Gurney advised empathy: “I get it—I don't want to leave my home either.” Encourage open talks about fears, share stories of regretful delays, and suggest gradual steps like adult daycare “test drives.” Legal prep—wills, trusts, advance directives, HIPAA forms—was urged by attendees like Florence.Moving Forward“I'm not ready yet” is human but surmountable. The webinar's breakout rooms fostered candid chats, reinforcing community as key. Planning now—whether for housing, care, or documents—offers control and dignity. As Gurney's platform, positiveaging.com, provides resources, the message is clear: readiness shapes a purposeful future.
In this episode of On The Line, Matt Gurney speaks with two sharp political observers to take stock of where things stand across Canada — and how some leaders are adapting to the post-election landscape. This episode of On The Line is brought to you by Airbnb. If you've been following the pod the last few weeks, you're familiar by now with the fact that all the Airbnbs that could be converted into long-term homes account for only 0.6 per cent of Canada's housing stock – and Canada can't solve a housing crisis with less than one per cent of a solution. But did you know that 47 per cent of Airbnb hosts in Canada report that income from hosting has helped them stay in their homes?Learn more about the critical role Airbnb plays in helping Canadians get by at Airbnb.ca/closerlook.First up: veteran pollster and friend of the show John Wright joins Matt to look at how Canadians are feeling three months into Prime Minister Mark Carney's post-election tenure. What do the numbers say? Why are some Canadians especially grumpy? And why haven't the Conservatives really found their footing yet? Wright and Gurney also talk about Pierre Poilievre's absence from the conversation, and why Ontario Premier Doug Ford seems happy to wait it all out — for now. This episode of On The Line is also brought to you by the Métis Nation of Ontario. It's Penetanguishene in the 1860s. For generations, Métis families fished these waters. Métis grandparents taught grandkids to cast nets. Fathers packed crates bound for the trading post. Mothers salted the morning's catch. And the smell of lake water and woodsmoke became deeply embedded in memories. Every summer, Métis boats carved routes through Georgian Bay with persistence. Their Métis traditions and trade became the commerce that built Canada. Today, while Canadian families head north to the cottage to play, remember those who paddled north to build, and know that Métis communities continue the traditions that built Canada. To learn more, visit OntarioMetisFacts.com.Then: we're joined by Rob Shaw, a prolific British Columbia journalist and regular contributor to The Line, for a roundup of the latest from the west coast. The B.C. government has landed in hot water over a decision to deny a dying child access to medicine — and the political backlash has been swift. Meanwhile, even as concerns over public safety remain paramount, Premier David Eby keeps picking fights with Donald Trump. Is this smart politics, or just desperation? In the regular quarterly update looking at the latest statistics from Landmark, Today's Conveyancer Podcast host David Opie is joined by Ben Robinson and Rob Gurney of Landmark to pore over the latest Property Trends report covering the second quarter of 2025. This is the first opportunity to review the impact of the stamp duty deadline on 31st March 2025, with a 79% year-on-year surge in completions compared to March 2024. There was an expected dip in April, down a third year on year and the interesting inference from the stats in the quarter's report is the subdued recovery, which is ongoing now in July, says Gurney. In the first half of the year the market is 8% up, driven by the SDLT deadline and with listing volumes up 5% on 2024 there is a desire to move; but with so many properties on the market, it's a buyer's paradise and there is much less urgency says Robinson, resulting in a realignment of asking price and reduced transaction speed. Summary of Q2 year-on-year activity for England and Wales:In England and Wales listings volumes were up 5% in Q2 ‘25 compared to Q2 ‘24.In England and Wales SSTC volumes in Q2 ‘25 were down 7% in Q2 ‘25 compared to Q2 ‘24.Completion volumes, in England and Wales, were down 20% in Q2 ‘25 compared to Q2 '24.Listen in to this shorter podcast for the latest insight and opinion. Austin Gurney didn't just quit his job—he quit the idea that being a great operator was enough. After moving to a new state with no contacts, he grew his excavation business fast by focusing on systems, showing up when others wouldn't, and thinking like a business owner from day one.He didn't build this to stay busy. He's building it to last.Takeaways:✅Built a steady business from scratch in a brand-new area with zero connections.✅Used daily Facebook group posts (at 5AM) to keep leads coming in before going full time.✅Realized he was spending too much time being a technician—not a leader.✅Wants his business to leave a legacy—not just cover the bills. Why it Matters:If you're growing a blue-collar business and want to scale without being stuck in the machine, this episode gives you the playbook.Links:

The Positive Aging Community recently hosted a dynamic discussion on one of the most pressing questions facing older adults and their families: should you age in place or consider making a move? Moderated by Steve Gurney, the session drew on recent survey data, expert insights, and robust audience participation to explore the nuanced factors that shape this deeply personal decision.Desire to Stay vs. Need to MoveA central theme emerged from the discussion: most older adults want to remain in their homes as they age. Citing the December 2024 AARP “Aging in Place in Community” study, Gurney noted that 75% of adults age 50 and older wish to stay in their current homes, while 73% hope to remain in their communities, even if that means moving to a different type of residence within the same area1. This distinction—between “aging in place” and “aging in community”—reflects a growing recognition that while the desire for continuity is strong, practical needs may prompt changes in living arrangements.Key Factors Driving DecisionsThe conversation highlighted several major considerations:Cost of Living: The primary driver for those contemplating a move is affordability. Sixty-five percent of adults aged 50+ would relocate for a lower cost of living, and 71% of those anticipating a move cite rent or mortgage expenses as a key factor1.Social Connections: The importance of social opportunities and avoiding isolation is on the rise. Loneliness and lack of engagement are now widely recognized as significant health risks, prompting many to seek out communities with more robust social infrastructures1.Home Maintenance and Accessibility: The cost and effort of maintaining a home, as well as the need for modifications to address mobility or safety, are major concerns. Forty-three percent of older adults expect they'll need to make their homes more accessible as they age1.Attitudes Toward Age-Restricted Communities: While age-segregated communities offer services and amenities, they are less appealing to many older adults, who prefer to remain integrated within broader, intergenerational neighborhoods1.A Four-Legged Stool: Planning for Meaning and PurposeGurney introduced a helpful metaphor for decision-making: the “four-legged stool.” The seat represents living with meaning and purpose, supported by four legs:Mobility: What if you can't drive or don't want to drive?Home Accessibility: What if you can't easily move around your home?Social Connections: What if you're not connected to neighbors or your community?Cognitive Health: What if you experience cognitive decline, such as dementia?Participants were encouraged to reflect on these questions as a framework for planning, emphasizing that having a plan—rather than simply hoping to age in place—is crucial for positive outcomes.Financial Stability and Community OptionsThe discussion also addressed concerns about the financial stability of senior living communities, particularly in light of recent bankruptcies among life plan communities. Gurney advised potential residents to be cautious consumers: ask about entry fee refunds, review financial health documents, and consult with professionals before making a decision.Watch the recording and review chat, etc. https://www.retirementlivingsourcebook.com/videos/aging-in-place-or-making-a-move-open-forum-and-q-aFor more information, resources, and the latest research, visit the AARP Aging in Place Study and the Positive Aging Community.

In late August 1979, the FBI's Brooklyn-Queens Metropolitan Resident Agency (the BQ) received a significant tip from a top-echelon informant within the Genovese crime family. This informant, known as "Bob," reported that Paul Castellano, head of the Gambino crime family, had mentioned an upcoming major meeting at Gurney's Inn in Montauk, New York. The anticipated attendees included prominent figures such as Frank "Funzi" Tieri of the Genovese family, Carmine "The Snake" Persico of the Colombo family, and Tampa's organized crime leader, Santo Trafficante Jr. Recognizing the potential significance of this gathering—the most consequential since the 1957 Apalachin summit—the FBI swiftly mobilized. Agents, including undercover operatives, were dispatched to Gurney's Inn, posing as tourists to monitor arrivals and activities. Specialized personnel were prepared to install surveillance equipment to capture conversations during the meeting. Despite the extensive preparations, the anticipated meeting never occurred. The reasons remain uncertain; possibilities include the informant providing inaccurate information, the mobsters altering their plans, or suspicions about increased surveillance leading to a change in venue. This outcome was reminiscent of the 1957 Apalachin meeting, where law enforcement's unexpected presence led to the mobsters' dispersal. While the immediate operation at Gurney's Inn did not yield the expected results, it underscored the FBI's evolving strategies in combating organized crime. The bureau's readiness to deploy advanced surveillance techniques and coordinate large-scale operations marked a shift towards more proactive and sophisticated approaches. This evolution contributed to significant successes in subsequent years, including the Mafia Commission Trial of 1986 and the conviction of John Gotti in 1992. This episode about the FBI's almost-successful attempt to bug a major mob meeting at Gurney's Inn illustrates the challenges law enforcement faced in infiltrating organized crime and highlights the pivotal role such operations played in modernizing the FBI's methodologies. Joining us in this episode, we have: Daniel Edward Rosen, a staff reporter from the New York Sun, whose work has appeared in Esquire, the New York Observer, City Journal, New York Magazine, and the New York Times. See his original article: https://www.nysun.com/article/how-the-fbis-mad-dash-to-wiretap-the-mob-at-a-montauk-hotel-nearly-50-years-ago-helped-modernize-todays-agencyFrank DiMatteo joins us to provide color commentary based upon his experiences growing up embedded in one of the most infamous mob crews in the history of the American Cosa Nostra. Frank is the son of Ricky DiMatteo, a member of the legendary Gallo Crew of the Colombo Crime Family in New York City. Daniel Sexton Gurney (1931-2018) was a Southern California Hot-Rodder who became one of the most successful racing drivers in the history of motorsport, with wins in Saloon Car, Sports Car, NASCAR, Indy Car and Formula One. Gurney raced for the Arciero Brothers, Luigi Chinetti's North American Racing Team, Ferrari, Brabham, BRM and Porsche before teaming up with Carroll Shelby to found All American Racers in 1964.Gurney was always seeking out men of motorsport at the top of their game: he collaborated with Colin Chapman of Lotus, engine maestro Harry Weslake, and the ambitious cadre at Ford Motor Company, who were intent on taking on the world's best.Gurney helped to pioneer the rear engine layout at the Indianapolis 500, spelling the end of Indy's Roadster Era in Champ Car racing, and AAR fielded the Gurney Eagle Formula One chassis for the first time in 1966. 1967 was a banner year for Gurney, winning the Belgian Grand Prix in the Eagle Mk1- the first Grand Prix win for an American constructor since 1921. He also won overall at the 24 Hours of Le Mans with his co-driver A.J. Foyt in the Ford GT 40 Mk IV.Gurney retired as a driver in 1970, but continued to operate All American Racers for the rest of his life, famously partnering with Toyota in IMSA-GT and CART. As a driver, Dan Gurney chalked up 63 victories over all motorsport categories, and All American Racers achieved 78 total wins as a constructor.
