Interview by Kris PetersWhat better way to celebrate your 13th birthday than to return to your spiritual home; the place where it all began?Which is exactly what Wallapalooza are doing this year when the festival returns to its birthplace at The Wallaby Hotel on November 4 for a music extravaganza unlike any seen on the local circuit for some time.Spearheaded by COG, Wallapalooza 2023 also features 28 Days, Butterfingers, Anty!, F.U.C, Dreamkillers, Azreal, PistonFist, Kaosphere, Snake Mountain and plenty more in what promises to be an Australian festival for music lovers of all tastes. After slaying last year's event, 28 Days return to up their game even more this year, with bass player Damo joining HEAVY to discuss more."We haven't played with COG for probably fifteen years I reckon," he began, "so it will be good to catch up with those guys again. We always used to play freezer gigs with them - like all ages things back in the day - so, yeah, it will be awesome."Last year's event was held at the nearby Mudgeeraba Showgrounds, which gave the show an outdoors feel and was a huge success, so we hit Damo up to see how he feels about returning to more of a pub feel for 2023."Last year was cool, it was huge," he smiled, "and it probably would have been too much of a task to pull it off every year. We actually stayed at The Wallaby Hotel last year (laughs) and they kind of walked us through the layout of when it was always there, so it will be cool. It will be ace to get there and play. We like those kind of 'little' festivals. The 2000 type people ones. They just seem more intimate, but still with enough of a crowd to make it really hyper."In the full interview, Damo talks more about the benefits of having 100% Australian band festivals, what we can expect from 28 Days, the early days of the band and the musical climate that created them, hitting commercial success with Upstyledown and why he thinks people connected with that album, the possibility of new music from 28 Days and more.

We here at HEAVY love a good mystery, so it was with much trepidation and worry for his personal safety that we sent Jimmy Glinster off to interview new outfit Sohnelm.Jimmy normally offends the world with his straight up album and live reviews, so to break his interviewing cherry we thought it safer to send him off to interview someone he already knew.Jimmy's skinsman from Azreal, Chris Dennis, also hits things for Sohnelm so we sent the Great Big Aussie Mouth off on his merry way to find out even something about these new kids on the block.Playing what the band describes as hesh dungeon rock or hippy killing dungeon rock, Sohnelm at present have one demo floating around on Soundcloud and that's all we know…Join Jimmy as he possibly gets more than he bargained for."We wanted to take our musical influences and also look at the state of the world,” offered guitarist/vocalist Matt Power, “and looking back through mythologies and how the worlds been coming to an end as long as it's been here. There's a story that comes out of mythology on that and we wanted to, I guess, take all of those influences so that what comes out is not necessarily one or the other. It takes in different influences with medievil kind of idea. I'm not a religious person but I love the religious stories. They are inspiring."Jimmy tries to bring us all up to speed by discussing where Sohnelm come from and what they wish to achieve, with Power stonewalling him and giving him tidbits."I guess we've moved a little slower than most bands,” he measured. “Two of our members live in Sydney so most of the time it's me and Chris bouncing ideas off each other and slowly working things up into songs. With me not playing guitar in a band before we are getting to the stage where we can present what we've been working on in the best light. We managed to get the first track that we were happy with out of the ones that we had."Listen to the full interview for full disclosure, with Jimmy using every charm in his arsenal to get to the truth – which he assures me he did.Who are Sohnelm? What do they want? And why are they talking to an album reviewer???

Victorian metal titans Frankenbok have witnessed somewhat of a rebirth since COVID, with their latest album Overdose emphatically proving that the band still have plenty to offer despite spending a quarter of a century doing the rounds.Sonically, Overdose sees Frankenbok veering into fresh musical territory, drawing influence more from the punk side of the well than ever before. As such, the band has also become highly sought after on the live circuit, with next weekends Moondoll Festival seeing the band finally return to the Sunshine State after a couple of aborted recent efforts. As one of Moondoll's headlining acts at the Mansfield Tavern on June 4 – alongside Kaosis, Kallidad, No No No No No, Seraphic, The Silencio, EAT CITY, Violet, Acid Cherry,Indiana Bones, Sacred Hearts, Skunkbone, Tailor Made Rejects, Ben Ely and the Spectres Of Light, Salt and Steel, Audio Reign, Viper Syndicate, Fumarole, The Wrath, Adriatic, DeadYet?, Supertrooper, Beast Machine, The Kindly Ravens, Your Man Alex Smith, Chiffon Magnifique and Brett Bites – Frankenbok plan to further enhance their growing reputation with a couple of QLD shows to show their wares.Frankenbok also play at Gold Coast Carnage Fest at Mo's Desert Clubhouse with Kaosis, Void Matter, Ocean Shores and Azreal on June 3, before heading to Frankies Pizza in Sydney on June 5.CJ Nash caught up with Frankenbok vocalist Dan McDougall to talk about the tour and more.
Interview by CJ Nash from Local Band SmokeoutNew Zealand experimental metal outfit Kaosis are crossing the waters back to Australia this June for a series of showcase events alongside some of this countries best and most promising acts. One of these shows is Gold Coast Carnage Fest, to be held at Mo's Desert Clubhouse in Burleigh Heads on Friday, June 3.Kaosis will be bringing a swag of new material and a revamped line-up that promises to raise the bar even higher from their debut Australian tour before the world turned to dust.Joining them for Carnage Fest will be Melbourne metal titans Frankenbok, as well as local Queensland outfits Void Matter, Ocean Shores and Gold Coast legends Azreal. Each week leading up to the event, HEAVY will present an interview with one of the bands as well as a short video Q & A to introduce you to the bands performing, as well as give you an insight into what to expect from one of the most exciting shows to hit the Gold Coast this year. This week we catch up with Azreal.Azreal are almost like an enigma on the local metal scene. They are a band who cleverly choose not to oversaturate the market with their music, instead playing only select shows for maximum impact. After recently setting the main stage alight at Wallapalooza, Azreal's next gig is at Carnage Fest, where you can be sure the band will once again deliver when it matters.C.J starts by asking about one of the other bands on the lineup, Frankenbok."Frankenbok is a name I've heard over many, many years, and I reckon I've probably seen them live at some point in the early 2000s, probably at a show at Festival Hall. I can't remember who they were supporting but I'm sure they played there. For whatever reason I didn't take too much notice, probably because back then I was there to see some international bands and here was just an Aussie band, so, whatever. But then I did get more interested in the Aussie scene and I think the first time actually seeing Frankenbok was a show up in Brisbane, and I'm gonna say it was maybe seven or eight years ago, and they absolutely smashed it out of the park and I stood up and took fucken notice. I've been following them ever since, and their latest album is absolutely killer."In the full interview, CJ dives deeper into the world of Azreal, focusing on Gold Coast Carnage Fest, and finds out more about what the Gold Coast legends have in store for us in the near future.Tickets for Carnage Fest are available now from Mosdesertcluhouse.com for just $10 pre-sale or $15 on the door.

Going up to Cairns and selling out a venue we've never played before, that was pretty awesome."In the full interview CJ dives deeper into touring life, focusing on Gold Coast Carnage Fest, and finds out more about what the Void Matter boys have in store for us in the near future.Tickets for Carnage Fest are available now from Mosdesertcluhouse.com for just $10 pre-sale or $15 on the door.

Since bursting onto the scene with their 2009 self-titled debut EP, Gold Coast metal machine Azreal have been one of those bands whose reputation deservedly precedes them at every turn.Through countless shows on their home turf through to an international tour supporting the mighty Devildriver, Azreal have always maintained their sense of adventure and musical aggression, most notably with their astonishing ru of seven appearances at the Gold Coast's premiere music festival Wallapalooza. On the cusp of yet another appearance, HEAVY sat down with the entire band – vocalist Luke Hosking, drummer Chris Dennis, guitarist Jimmy Glinster and bass player Scott Campbell to see how they are feeling about playing at what will be the biggest Wallapalooza yet.Although not being on the initial line-up for the rescheduled event, Glinster is quick to point out Azreal is deservedly on the updated bill."Technically, we were on the line-up when it was due last September,” he corrected, “and then it got pushed back to November and we couldn't do it because of Chris' bucks party. As it turns out a couple of bands that were booked in dropped out, so..."This year Wallapalooza moves from its usual home at the Wallaby Hotel to the larger confines of the Mudgeeraba showgrounds, a move the band agrees was inevitable and also warranted."It's a well organised festival,” Hosking shrugged. “It always has a good turnout, it's always cranking, it's always got good local bands and it's a good fun scene. Everyone has a wicked time so they come back. There's never been a Walla that hasn't smashed it. Not that we've been at anyway.""Having done seven you can progressively see each year getting bigger and better and obviously this year bigger again," added Campbell. In the full interview the band chats about their time slot, the local bands on the bill, playing with some of the biggest names in Australian music, what the band has been doing in the five years since their last single Beast, possible new music, the Gold Coast metal scene and more.
If Brisbane had a throne for the Kings Of Metal, then Brisbane outfit Massic would be sitting atop that velvet chair as we speak.Blending groove, sludge and hardcore metal into a chaotic brand bearing their own signature, Massic play each show like their life depends on it – literally – and since their debut album Redshift in 2018 have taken nothing for granted. After overcoming serious well documented health issues suffered by their frontman Simon Russell-White, Massic last year released “Assimilate”, a driving slab of metal meatiness that served as a teaser for the band's follow up album. The release last month of “Surrender” dangled the carrot just that bit further, with the accompanying announcement of the band's next album tempered only by the sorrow at not having a chance to see Massic perform live on stage for far too long. All of that changes next weekend when Massic take to the stage as part of Wallapalooza 2022, featuring Grinspoon, The Butterfly Effect, 28 Days, British India, The Poor, Cosmic Psychos and more.Massic are just one of a wealth of local talent asked to perform at the festival, with Azreal, Awake In Time, Smoking Martha, Goatzilla and more also getting the chance to share the stage with some of this countries bigger names.Simon joined HEAVY for a chat about Wallapalooza earlier this week."Me and the boys have a bit of a thing,” he laughed. “It's not gonna be real until we're all standing on stage together and about to hit that first song, so we'll see. Nah, we're keen as man, it's gonna be great. I really feel that being in a band can be frustrating, but hats off to all the organisers of any festival. Andy and Erin and everyone else involved with Walla, it takes serious balls to continue a festival like this."Aside from Among The Ruined and Azreal, Massic are flying the metal flag for the event, with Simon admitting the band were looking forward to the honour."I think originally we were the only heavy metal band, so it's kind of cool to have Among The Ruined and our brothers in Azreal there,” he smiled. “I think it's awesome being one of the only metal bands. Apart from the crazy, cool line-up, I think it's gonna be sweet t get some metal in there. It's really cool to have been asked as being one of the lesser genres."In the full interview, Simon talks more about the new single, the upcoming album, what to expect musically, more clean singing on this one, his new side project and more.

Ladies at the Round Table: A Journey into the Realms of Sci-fi and Fantasy
Show Name: His Dark Materials Season/Episode: 2/3 Theft Date Aired: November 30, 2020 Where Aired: HBOmax We might want to make a mention that there is violence towards animals potentially or something and cut saying skip to ___ time stamp to skip over that part i know it can be hard for some people to hear about and stuff… Plot Summary in a sentence Getting all the key players on the same page - it’s a race to find Lyra, Lyra needs to grow up, but that’s bad right? Whatever you do, don’t lose the… what do you mean you lost it? Lyra leaves to try to find more about dust, does not tell Will and gets in a bunch of trouble. While lyra is in the other world being found out her world is slowly dying and some serious bonding is happening. What’s your word? Race Oops Feels Slow Story talking points: (I am going to lead the conversation by character rather than sequence since it jumps around so much finishing up with Lyra) Witches and iorek- Bird tells Iorik about Lyra’s destiny and he is mad that they are usingLyra as a toy. Azreal hole in the sky is messing with everyone because of the weather (seals, fog cant see with telescope, fog stops Mrs coulter from traveling) It's nice to see Iorek again. I thought it was going to be a massive spoiler. I think I missed this. Lee and Mrs Coulter- Starts with Grumman calling to the wind and Lee “return” The ring is not what Joey expected Lee in the bar “now that we are friends” lol Lee’s face when the guy calls Grumman a heretic - he and Hester have a look like we gotta get out of here. He says “amen” cool as can be I thought Ms. Coulter was pretty consistent but Manuel’s acting just ruined Lee for me in this scene. Both of them interacted weirdly because of it. Hester and Lee : “he gave you no choice, you didn't shoot to kill” obviously doesn’t like killing people... Did anyone else notice Lee’s Texan accent all but disappears in this moment? And I don’t think it came back. ^^^ THIS ^^^^ I was thinking it was def less pronounced in this episode and it just slowly disappears like wut. Mrs Coulter “I’m her mother.” Lee “so” Lee sees on her face that she went through the same abusive childhood “of course you did” I believed it, I was grateful when it came. - it wont break me and you know it because it wouldn’t break you either. Hester nuzzles him and Mrs coulter goes to the brick wall. Monkey tries to tentatively hold her hand (she allows it) Boreal decides to tellMrs coulter. It must have been before the happenings with Lyra this episode because of post taking time, so why tell her now? ^Joey has a reason for that “People will be looking for her not all of them good. If you find her please, keep her safe” Also do daemons bleed? hester didn’t seem as injured as lee THE MONKEY JUST TOSSES THAT SNAKE DAEMON AFTER SMASHING ITS HEAD INTO THE GROUND WHATTTTTT SO GOOD AND SO UPSETTING Why didn’t the snake dissolve into nothing like the other daemons? Guess he’s not dead? Mary Malone- (No y) Saves Lyra helps her get away. Asks simple question need simple answer - cave doesn’t give it to her, but universe does. At home great with her niece and nephew too. Sister says break through at home. She reads I Ching at home and the cave reacts. I liked that she was more worried about how she was doing instead of where she was like everyone else seems to be focusing on. And once she found out she was safe her whole demeanor changed Will left behind- Conversation with creepy girl #1 - ghost in the tower built by the guild (group of men) philosophers. Tabitha is the creepy girl Wiki says her name is angelica I came back to fix that just now, I’m glad you caught it too! It was cool to get the information this way vs in the book. You hear the same thing twice which was annoying but kinda fun to see an adult tell it vs a kid telling it. Lyra and Boreal in the car- He calmly explains to her how to fasten her seatbelt. “My mother will be worried.” “I’m sure she will” Did anyone else scream at Lyra right then? Just me? Okay. Boreal’s Face omg! Lyra and Will- He so quickly forgives her and they work together to try to solve the problem Pan watching the movie is the cutest. Cheesy Paddington Bear going through a portal window. Are they gonna bench switch on me? Legit haven’t seen paddington sooooooo does that movie connect with this show in a way or what is the connection why this movie? Hahaha her eating popcorn (my comfort food) “this tastes horrible, then stop eating it, no” dead. Lyra and will and Boreal at the end- I’m a collector - you’re a thief )this is a bit of a heavy conversation, but important. Shoshie for the win- not specifically the magisterium getting the knife, but Boreal is the more worthy nemesis I think. “We’ll get your knife” will standing up and the look on his face like Lyra you are crazy to be so brave, but I got your back, while still being cautious. This scene in the book is intense! Pan leaps out in cat form to attack and he isn’t freaked by it at all and will catch a glimpse of his snake daemon oof so cool. Favorite character this episode? Hard today. - Hester I had typed something but I changed my mind, I have a lot of favorites. Kinda don’t know who to choose… coulter perhaps.. You see a lot of her and learn more about why she is the way she is and she opens up a little and trusts someone Technical Talking Points (music, lighting, editing): The clothes in the mining town Lee goes to Shot above chili Anne The color palette in the town with Lee was absolutely luscious. Best part of the episode LOL I Ching - bagua map matches the interior seating of the magisterium The book that Mary uses for her journaling! Love it. The leather snapping pouch that the letters are kept in Using Pan as a look out on the run was so much fun. Boreal has the coolest car, I’m disappointed I do not also have the coolest car. Was disappointed in Lyra a little this episode Hester’s face when she watches the Daemon particulate. The shots were so nice! They really paid attention to how each town and place is different. You can tell there are different people living there with different cultures and languages and style of dress. There was lots of thought into how they live and stuff. Seemed like there were more daemons in shots like big shots The noise when the daemons walk is too cute! In the bar hesters little hops and pans everything The fur blowing in the wind when hester is in the balloon and Ioreks neck skin flapping in the wind a bit haha Joey has a thing about wants/needs she wants to talk about Joey will do a Pateron/ follow us ploy again. In episode two, the vixens stay in Cincinnati and dive into a rough case. The Angel of Death, Azreal, is an archangel. He separates the souls from bodies at death. In this story, we talk about a man who self proclaims himself as the angel of death. Co-workers remember calling him the "Kiss of Death." Over the course of his killings some estimate that he killed up to 87 people. Most of these victims are elderly patients in hospitals with low outcomes of survival. Despite this, these patients did not get the proper handling they were due. If you suspect any type of elderly abuse, it is your duty to report it. It often goes unnoticed in nursing homes and families are usually not around. But if you do suspect it at all, please call (202) 370-6292 at the National Adult Protective Services Association. It will always go unnoticed unless someone speaks up. Synopsis of Gotham S02E20 Unleashed Podcast Directed by: Paul A. Edwards Written by: Danny Cannon Professor Hugo Strange (BD Wong) is still under deep suspicion from the G.C.P.D. after the attack by former dead mayor Theo Galavan (now known as Azreal (James Frain)) on Captain Barnes (Michael Chiklis) who is in critical condition in hospital. However, Strange remains one step in front of the police as he shreds all of his documents and begins to close down Indian Hill, relocating the test subjects. Ed Nygma (Cory Michael Smith) disturbed from his discovery of Indian Hill also realises the need to relocate . During his escape Nygma meets Selina Kyle (Camren Bicondova) on her own who is trying to track Professor Strange for Bruce Wayne (David Mazouz) as she hopes to also rescue Bridget Pike (Michelle Veintimilla) who she thinks is still alive in Arkham. At the same time the discovery of Azrael loose in Gotham city sparks deep concern for Bruce from Alfred and Jim, as Azrael remembers his mission to kill the son of Gotham. But it also resurrects the need for lasting revenge from Penguin (Robin Lord Taylor) and Butch Gilzean (Drew Powell) who team up to avenge the death of Gertrude Kappelput and near-death of Tabitha from her brother. As Azrael arrives at Wayne Manor attacking Alfred Pennyworth (Sean Pertwee) and Bruce, he proves difficult to stop until Oswald and Butch arrive with the right tools. Firing an RPG, Butch kills Azreal just as in Indian Hill another weapon is being fired up! Gordon and Bruce question Professor Strange about Project Chimera, witch later makes Strange to send out Theo Galavan, now under the name of Azrael, who is sent out to take out Gordon. While at Arkham Asylum, Gordon bumps into Edward Nygma in the playroom. Nygma later overhears Strange and Peabody complaining about Gordon's interference. Nygma suggests that he can help them by taking out Gordon, but Strange refuses his suggestion. Bruce is told by Bullock and Gordon that their isn't enough evidence to imprision Hugo Strange. Azrael gets some memories back after looking over posters from Galavan's election. After that Gordon has been imprisoned by Nathaniel Barnes, lights flicker, and Azrael shows up, killing a little bunch of officers, and makes an attempt for Gordon, but doesn't succeed in it. Barnes and Gordon flee to a balcony, where Barnes fights Azreal with his pipe, and breaks his sword and rips of his mask, realizing Azrael's identity. In the end, Barnes is sent to hospital and Gordon leaves the GCPD by some distance, having Azrael watching over him at a bridge.
