In episode 311 of The Just Checking In Podcast we checked back in with journalist Christian Hewgill. We first checked in with Christian in December 2022, in JCIP #160! At that point in time, he had recently left the BBC where he worked on BBC Radio 1's Newsbeat programme as a reporter and presenter for five years, and was working freelance. In 2025, he is still working freelance but in 2023, his old work colleague, Radio 1 presenter, DJ and superstar Greg James messaged him to ask him to form a super-team of presenters and co-host a new Formula One podcast, ‘The Fast and The Curious'. Alongside Greg and sports journalist Betty Glover, they began carving out a unique space in the F1 podcast space, being able to cater to F1 aficionados and new, casual fans, young and old alike. Since then, the podcast has exploded in popularity, with the three of them hosting live shows at F1 races at Monaco and Silverstone, securing interviews with the top stars in Formula One, including drivers like Lewis Hamilton and George Russell and Team Principals like McClaren's Zak Brown and now worldwide star and former Team Principal for Haas, Gunther Steiner. As well as this new adventure, Christian co-hosts another F1 podcast, ‘F1 Explains', which is aimed at helping people learn more about the sport – and is an official Formula 1 podcast. In Part 2 of his journey, we discuss this massive change in Christian's journalism career. We talk about how he's adapted to the increased level of fame he now has, some of his favourite episodes, his relationship with Betty and Greg, his growth as a presenter and the reality of running a podcast, even one as big as FAC. For Christian's continued mental health journey, it hasn't been as plain sailing in the last three years. First of all, in 2023, his relationship with his then partner of 10 years ended, which naturally caused a lot of mental health difficulties in adapting to life without that person in his life. Then, also in 2023, Christian's mum was diagnosed with dementia, which took hold very quickly, and his dad had to take on a new role from purely loving husband to full-time carer for her too. In addition, Christian's dad also had a heart attack, which naturally caused Christian a lot of stress and upheaval. Thankfully, Christian is now in a new relationship, and engaged! However, his mum's dementia has remained difficult to deal with on a weekly basis. We discuss the grief he has experienced for the loss of the person his mum was, the relationship breakup, his dad's heart attack and his relationship with his dad now, following his mum's dementia diagnosis. Her exact birth date is unclear, but the most consistent information puts her birth year around 2003, though this has been disputed. Natalia lives in a Ukrainian orphanage, where she experiences trauma, including a disturbing encounter with a masked figure. Natalia is adopted by two different families out of state before being adopted by the Barnetts. The reasons for these prior placements ending are unclear. 2010: May 24th: Natalia becomes a patient of Dr. McClaren. Natalia is adopted by Michael and Kristine Barnett. She initially has a positive experience with the family, enjoying her room and new possessions. Natalia is seen by a dentist, Dr. Tim Gossweiler, for the first time. He notes the presence of both baby teeth and adult teeth which indicates an age range of 6-9 years. 2010-2013: Natalia is accused of various disturbing behaviors by the Barnetts, including attempted violence, threats, and sexual impropriety, despite her young age. The Barnetts begin to question Natalia's age. They seek medical opinions, but find that Natalia's dwarfism complicates age determination. Natalia is re-aged to be an adult by the Marion County Probate Court. The Barnetts move Natalia into an apartment alone in Lafayette, Indiana. Natalia begins attending adult learning center and staff call the police. The Barnetts are notified Natalia is a dependent due to her disability, which makes them financially responsible. Natalia is allegedly overdosed on medication by Kristine. The Barnetts relocate to Canada and are notified that they may be on the hook forever in reference to Natalia. Post-Barnett Era (2013-2022): Natalia is rescued by Cynthia and Antoine Mans from her apartment. Cynthia and Antoine Mans become Natalia's guardians for more than a decade, providing care. The Manses join the church where Tamara Lee and Bishop Stephen Thomas Lee attend. Antoine Mans, who refers to himself as Bishop, exercises strict control over Natalia and her life. Natalia begins to see signs that the Mans are controlling, and she is not free. The Mans have the legal authority to institutionalize her at any time, and that is used as a threat over her head. Natalia's money is used to pay for a house for the Mans family, and she is not on the deed. The Mans family are believed to be using and manipulating her. Eric Evangelista, producer for a Natalia Grace documentary series, has not heard from the Mans family during the series. Natalia meets a man from the UK online, named Neil. She starts planning to leave the Mans home to be with him. The Mans find out about her relationship with Neil. She is told to stay with them, and they consider it a fight for her soul, claiming it is Satan. The Manses are said to be overprotective, strict and controlling towards Natalia. Natalia begins talking to others about the Mans. She shares that she hates living there and it is hell. Natalia communicates via learning apps with Neil where they change the username each message. The Mans had deleted the original messages, so they would not be viewed. It is implied that Cynthia and Antoine are using the sexual messages she sent to Neil to blackmail her. A neighbor of the Manses reports that their religious beliefs are a show and that they don't practice what they preach. The neighbor also feels that they are a cult, with the children being brainwashed. Natalia is told that her medical issues are happening because of her sinful life. A former neighbor claims the Mans family were very good to their children. Spankings were normal. There was nothing to be worried about. Natalia begins to question her role in the Mans' home. She wonders if she is an enemy to them. 2022-2023: Natalia leaves the Mans' care and moves in with Nicole and Vince DePaul. Natalia is still in contact with Neil, and is finally freed by him. Neil is said to be pivotal to her freeing her mind a bit. The DePaul's discover a hidden side to Natalia, a "private" persona, that contradicts her "public" persona, where she praises the Manses. The DePaul's buy sound proofing for Natalia's room. Natalia starts talking about abuse from the Manses, and that the abuse is physical. The DePaul family become increasingly concerned about the manipulation of Natalia by the Mans family. The Mans family demand to have all of Natalia's finances and her medical care, despite not wanting to let her have the necessary surgery. They claim they are her parents and her care is none of the DePaul's business.

Got only guords and such in her China cabinet... wishes she had something nice to put in it. Talks about emeralds and other stones. Wonders if they are still buying Deep River Eggs or not. I thought I'd use it to cover an article by Finn Mcredmond about Metoo backfiring on whamen. Here's what her article says and I quote: "CV data shows that fewer women academics are collaborating with men. A new paper has found that the #MeToo movement has caused a significant decline in the productivity of women academics because fewer are collaborating with their male colleagues. This fall is most acute in universities “where the perceived risk of sexual harassment accusations for men is high”, resulting in a chilling effect on cross-sex collaboration. Using CV data to track collaborations between economists over six years around #MeToo (2015-2020), researcher Marina Gertsberg discovered that junior female academics started 0.7 fewer projects per year than before. 60% of this decline can be attributed to a decrease in collaborations with new male co-authors, which broadly correlates with a reduction in growth of the co-author network. Gertsberg attributes this fall to men unwilling to collaborate with women due to fears of accusations of sexual harassment. In fact, several surveys have found that men believe they are more vulnerable to false allegations of sexual harassment in a post-MeToo landscape, and are perhaps managing this perceived risk by reducing their exposure to women. #MeToo's original goal was to improve workplace conditions for women by holding men accountable for sexual misconduct. The response resulted in public allegations that brought down several high-profile individuals. Early cases included William V Harris, the well-established Columbia history professor who retired as part of a settlement in a sexual harassment lawsuit in late 2017; and prominent Harvard Professor, Jorge I. Domínguez, who was accused of sexual harassment by up to 18 women. This new research is significant because it highlights that the #MeToo movement had negative effects on women too. Junior researchers depend on collaboration with colleagues to build their reputation and qualify for tenure. But a reduction in interactions and professional collaborations “will exacerbate inequality between the career opportunities of men and women,” the paper concludes. The MeToo movement intended to improve the workplace for women, but it may have had the unintended consequence of stalling their careers." unquote. The thing is women in the workforce were never as productive as they let on to begin with. They were just using men to do their work for them and now their gynocentric gravy train has come to an end. It's a sunny afternoon in McLaren Park in San Francisco's Excelsior District. Throngs of people are gathered on either side of a roadway that snakes down a steep hill. As they watch, a person riding what looks like a giant black Converse sneaker whooshes past. Coming up close behind it, a cast-iron bathtub whizzes by on what could've been the frame of a lawn mower. Then another driver — this one clinging for dear life onto what looks like a torpedo — hurtles by, inches off the ground. This was the first Artists' Soapbox Derby held by the San Francisco Museum of Art — what we now know as SFMOMA — on May 18, 1975. It was a race for homemade cars. No engines! You just needed to be able to roll, steer and stop. On April 10, SFMOMA is reviving its Soapbox Derby in McLaren Park. Homemade cars that can coast under the power of their own gravity will have their turn in the spotlight, careening down an 800-foot hill. It's free and open to the public. This week, we're airing an episode from KQED's Bay Curious that takes us back to the first Soapbox Derby in 1975 and it's surprising twists in the road.
