The Space Show Presents ISDC 2026 with Rod Pyle, Aggie Kobrin & Dr. Pascal Lee, Tuesday, 5-12-26Quick Summary:The Space Show hosted a discussion about the upcoming ISDC (International Space Development Conference) in McLean, Virginia, featuring Aggie Kobrin, Rod Pyle, Pascal Lee, Sherry Bell, and select members of The Space Show Wisdom Team. The participants discussed the conference's location, schedule, key speakers including Apollo astronaut Jack Schmidt, and various tracks covering topics from AI in Space to Mars exploration. Pascal explained the current technical readiness levels for Mars missions, noting that while conceptually feasible, reliable systems for a round-trip mission remain challenging. The group also discussed the conference's networking opportunities, student participation, and various awards to be presented, including the new NSS Apollo Legacy Award to Jack Schmidt. The conversation concluded with reflections on the evolution of space technology and the conference's role in bringing together diverse perspectives in the space community.Detailed Summary:Our program focused on discussing the upcoming ISDC (International Space Development Conference) in McLean, Virginia. Aggie Kobrin provided details about the event, noting that approximately 400 students are registered to attend from various countries, with about 50% coming from Romania and 50% from India. The conference will feature keynote speakers, astronauts, and NASA representatives, along with multiple tracks and sessions over four days. The meeting discussed the upcoming space conference scheduled for June 4-7, featuring over 100 speakers including astronauts, NASA officials, and space industry leaders. Key speakers mentioned include Jack Schmidt from Apollo 17, Jerry Griffin, Michael Lopez Allegria, and science fiction author David Brin, who will receive the Clark Award. The conference will include plenary sessions, panel discussions, student tracks, networking events, and a Saturday night party with auction and DJ, though political representatives have not yet confirmed their attendance. The group discussed various tracks and speakers. They confirmed that Jarod Isaacman, who was previously invited, will not be attending due to a trip to Europe. Phil explained the focus of the interplanetary infrastructure track, which explores making space travel between planets more routine and cost-effective. Aggie described the “Launch Pads and Many Roads to Space” track as a way to accommodate student presentations that don't fit into other tracks. The group also mentioned several competitions, including a student competition and the Rothblatt competition, where audience members vote on finalists. Philip confirmed that the interplanetary track is full, with the abstract submission deadline having passed on April 15th.Pascal joined the meeting to discuss his role as co-chair of the ISDC conference with Rod, highlighting new tracks including Interstellar, Mars, and AI in Space. Pascal announced that Jack Schmidt, an Apollo astronaut, would be honored with the new NSS Apollo Legacy Award at the conference, particularly in recognition of the upcoming Artemis II mission. The Mars track was noted to have a record number of contributions and speakers, with plans to discuss practical steps toward human Mars missions, including considerations around Starship and NASA's current situation. The team discussed the current status of the conference program, noting that while most tracks are full, there is limited space available in “many roads to space” for additional presentations. They reported receiving about 300 abstract submissions this year, with around half being accepted. Pascal announced that the option to submit citable papers following presentations will be extended to all tracks this year, allowing papers between 2-20 pages. The group also confirmed details about meal speakers throughout the conference, including Arty Olimani, Jim Green, Jeffrey Manber, and others, and discussed that while some sessions may be taped for marketing purposes, the conference generally requires in-person attendance. The group discussed strategies for engaging younger audiences in space settlement topics, highlighting challenges in getting people below 35 to read comprehensive books like “High Frontier.” Rod shared that NSS published a Space Settlement Workshop book covering key steps in space development, while Pascal mentioned his student's work on transitioning from the ISS to a station with artificial gravity. Aggie noted the success of engaging younger students at space events, mentioning hundreds of enthusiastic students from junior high to graduate level participating in poster sessions and other activities. The discussion focused on details about an upcoming space conference, including its location at the Hilton Hotel in McLean, Virginia, which is accessible via subway from both Dulles and Reagan airports. Aggie explained that while hotel rooms are still available, early bird pricing has ended, with current rates around $189-200 per night. The conference typically attracts around 400 student attendees among its thousand participants, and Rod shared inspiring stories from previous events about how space programs positively impacted young people's lives. The conversation concluded with David asking about accessibility for newcomers to space topics, though the response was cut off at the end of the transcript. The group discussed the accessibility and appeal of the ISDC conference, emphasizing that while it caters to space enthusiasts and specialists, it is designed to be inclusive for a broader audience, including those new to space topics. They highlighted the evolution of space technology and ideas over the years, noting how once-futuristic concepts have become reality. The conversation also covered various awards to be presented at the conference, including the Arthur C. Clarke Award for David Brin, Space Pioneer Awards, and a Distinguished Service Merit Award for Fred Becker. Pascal expressed his enthusiasm for ISDC as a unique gathering of diverse space community members, highlighting its accessibility and networking opportunities.Pascal discussed the current challenges and requirements for a human mission to Mars, explaining that while the concept is feasible on paper, reliable systems for a round-trip lasting up to 900 days are still needed. He emphasized the importance of focusing on the moon first and highlighted the role of robotics and AI in future Mars missions. Pascal also addressed concerns about planetary protection, suggesting that crew members returning from Mars should be quarantined as a precautionary measure. The discussion highlighted the complexity and challenges of space exploration, particularly regarding Mars missions, and the value of networking and conversations at events like ISDC.The upcoming ISDC 2027 conference in Los Angeles was mentioned, then we continued going over ISDC format, tracks, and unique features. Phil highlighted the value of meal tickets and networking opportunities at the conference, while Marshall suggested the possibility of a dedicated robotics track in the future. The conversation also touched on the potential for discussing non-human biologicals at the conference, though Rod noted that any related information would likely remain classified. Aggie and Rod provided information about the conference website and registration options, and the group briefly discussed the evolving use of business cards in professional settings.Special thanks to our sponsors:American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Helix Space in Luxembourg, Celestis Memorial Spaceflights, Astrox Corporation, Dr. Haym Benaroya of Rutgers University, The Space Settlement Progress Blog by John Jossy, The Atlantis Project, and Artless EntertainmentOur Toll Free Line for Live Broadcasts: 1-866-687-7223 (Not in service at this time)For real time program participation, email Dr. Space at: drspace@thespaceshow.com for instructions and access. The Space Show is a non-profit 501C3 through its parent, One Giant Leap Foundation, Inc. From scraping his way through real estate to now building the world's first AI-powered hotel, Philippe's story is proof that hunger beats advantage every time. He breaks down how the hotel adapts to every guest before they even arrive, why most people born with opportunity waste it, and the mindset that took him from zero to a conglomerate spanning three continents.

Berly and LA tackle Supernatural Season 8, Episode 15: "Man's Best Friend with Benefits" - and from the title alone, you can guess why the hosts were NOT having it.The episode opens with a cop murdering people in gruesome neck-exploding fashion, only to reveal he's been having prophetic dreams about the killings. Enter James Frampton (yes, with embroidered initials JMF), a witch-cop whose beautiful Doberman familiar Portia can also take human form. And yes, they're sleeping together, which had the hosts immediately uncomfortable with the entire premise.Sam and Dean get called in by Portia (who literally trots into their motel room as a dog, then transforms into a woman in a LBD and heels) to help James, who thinks he's murdering people in his sleep. The investigation leads them into the witch community, complete with a bar featuring telepathic chess and a suspicious character literally named "Philippe La Chat" (the cat) - because subtlety is dead. The hosts were thrown from the start by Three Stooges references they had to Google, and spent the episode increasingly bothered by the familiar/witch romantic relationship dynamics. The case reveals James is being controlled by his jealous witch friend Spencer, who's upset about the forbidden familiar-witch romance and uses Phillipe to frame James. After a witch fight involving some awkward special effects, the boys use one of Bobby's witch-killing spells to take out Spencer. The episode ends with James and Portia driving off together (with her inexplicably in dog form in the front seat) to start over somewhere new.The real payoff comes in the final scene where Dean admits he trusts Sam to handle the trials after experiencing some hell visions, leading to their "we'll do this together" moment. Sam then coughs up blood and hides it from Dean, setting up future drama. The hosts called this one of their least favorite episodes, citing excessive exposition, problematic relationship dynamics, and a general disconnect from the show's usual tone. Even the laundry basket pratfall that made them laugh couldn't save this one. Written by seasoned TV veterans, it felt like a missed assignment that just didn't work within the Supernatural universe."By the way, I gotta hand it to you. It's been 15 hours since Portia mentioned her night with James, and not one bestiality joke out of you."Sources:https://supernatural.fandom.com/wiki/Man%27s_Best_Friend_With_Benefits https://k-oconnell.medium.com/familiars-what-they-are-and-how-to-get-one-a5869189912fSend us your review!Support the showTHANK YOU FOR LISTENING!Please rate and review Denim-Wrapped Nightmares wherever you get your podcasts! What does Planet of the Apes and a Van Helsing analog traveling to Transylvania have in common with titanium orgy werewolves and bad mod music? Apparently, it's Sybil Danning getting topless only once, and yet also somehow 18 times. That doesn't make sense, and yet you'll understand exactly what that means when you tune in to this episode of Loathsome Things: A Horror Movie Podcast that continues to compare nipples to pizza toppings out of solidarity with the ladies.

Single White Female from 1992 is an interesting movie. It seemed to be a big deal at the time, but neither of us remember anything about it. The rumors of Jenna Ortega starring in a remake are certainly interesting, however. The Saw franchise brings back a lot of pleasant memories. Sure, the vast majority of them are tied to the first, but the same can be said about most long running movie series. Naturally, we have opinions about the cancellation of Saw XI and its future.Though we do not have the opportunity to cover them as much as we would like to, we enjoy short films. In this episode we get to talk about three shorts from the Boston Underground Festival. A gory anthology, the truth about banjo strings, and a really cool stop motion flick all caught our attention.Another movie from BUFF that interested us was Chain Reactions. That it was about The Texas Chainsaw Massacre was cool enough. Chainsaw is one of the most important horror movies of all time and has a special place in our childhoods. That Stephen King is also prominently featured made it impossible for us to ignore.Alexandre O. Phillipe is a great filmmaker who has made tremendous documentaries about David Lynch, Alien, and The Exorcist. His signature style is on full display here as Chain Reactions is a perfect mix of nostalgia, theory, and opinion on Tobe Hooper's classic. It is a must watch. It has literally been years since we have reviewed a documentary about a cult. So, we were very excited to watch AUM: The Cult at the End of the World. We knew it would be interesting, but we had no idea what to expect. One of us was so dumbfounded by what they saw that they could only use one word to describe it.Aum is unlike any other cult. (Somehow, it is still in existence - kinda.) At its peak, it could legitimately claim worldwide membership that was in the tens of thousands. The existed in full view of the public, Worst of all, they had a relationship with the media that can only be described as friendly. It is a truly wild documentary. So this episode is very late. Unfortunately, Ian had an upper respiratory infection and was pretty much bedridden for three weeks. You can still hear the sickness in his voice, but we wanted to make sure that we at least discussed East West Street a little bit. East West Street is part memoir, part historical text, and part legal scholarship. The text explores many people's lives-including the author's grandfather-focuses largely on Raphael Lemkin who coined the term 'genocide' and Hersch Lauterpacht who introduced the term 'crimes against humanity'. This text was different from what Ian expected, but we still learned a lot and had an interesting conversation about history and what we learned in school. Coming up at the end of December is Ronnie's pick which is Atalanta by Jennifer Saint.
Kimberly had never read Besson--and didn't know Ringwald was translating!--but she loved this brief, beautiful novel. Listen in as she touches on the very un-american phenomenon of autofiction, before diving into the fascinating structural choices, the beauty of the spare prose and why Besson is SO GOOD AT SEX WRITING. She'll even offer up interesting translation differences and the novel's details that Ringwald (mostly judiciously) chose to leave out.
The Phantom of the Opera by Jennifer Basset原文Chapter 8: Where is Christine Daae?On Saturday morning,Comte Phillipe looked across the breakfast table at his brother."Don't do it,Raoul, please. All this talk about ghosts and phantoms. I think the girl is mad.""She's not mad,and I'm going to marry her." Raoul said."She's only a little opera singer" Phillipe said unhappily. "And she's very young. Are you still going to love her in ten or twenty years time?Raoul drank his coffee and did not answer. There were two more unhappy faces in the Opera House, too.The directors now understood about O.G.They didn't want anymore accidents."It's a lot of money," Mr. Firmin said unhappily. He thought for a minute."What about some flowers in Box 5? Madam Giry says that O.G likes flowers.""O.G. can bring his own flowers!" shouted Mr. Armand. The evening began well. The chandelier was now back in place, with new ropes. All Paris was in the Opera House.Everybody wanted to hear Christine Daae's voice again.People also knew about the love story between Christine Daae and the Vicomte de Chagny. There are no love secrets in Paris!People watched the Comte and the Vicomte Box 14 with interest.Young men from families like de Chagny do not marry opera singers. When Christine came onto the stage, her face was white, and she looked afraid. But she sang like an angel.Ah, what a voice! All Paris was in love with Christine Daae. She began to sing the famous love song.Suddenly, every light in the Opera House went out.For a second, nobody moved or spoke. Then a woman screamed, and all the lights came on again. But Christine Daae was no longer on the stage! She was not behind the stage. She was not under the stage.Nobody could find her.The Opera House went mad.Everybody around here and there, shouted and called. In the director's office, people ran in and out.The police came and asked questions. But nobody could answer the questions.Mr. Armand got angry and shouted, and Mr. Firmin told him to be quiet. Then, Madame Giry arrived in the office with her daughter, Meg."Go away, woman! " Mr. Armand shouted."Monsieur, there are three people missing now!" Madame Giry said. "Meg, tell the directors your story."This was Meg story."When the lights went out, we were just behind the stage. We heard a scream - I think it was Christine Daae's voice. Then the lights came back on, but Christine wasn't there! We were very afraid, and we began to run back to our dressing room. There were people running everywhere. Then we saw the Vicomte de Chagny. His face was red, and he was very angry. "Where's Christine? Where's Christine?"He shouted. Suddenly, the Persian came up behind him and took his arm. He said something to the Vicomte and they went into Christine Daae's dressing room.….""Yes? And then?" Mr. Firmin said quickly. "What happened next?""Nobody knows!" Meg's face was white. "We looked into Christine Daae's dressing room, but ... but that...was nobody there!"

Luisa Yu has traveled to every country in the world Hey now, I am your host, Ric Gazarian. I am excited to have Luisa Yu on the podcast. She is well known and beloved member to many in the community. For those not in the know, Luisa just visited her last country this year. She accomplished this goal as a 79 year old. When many in her age group have retired to more placid and serene pastures, Luisa has demonstrated grit and determination. And Luisa has not slowed down .. trips since she has completed the quest include Mogadishu, the north Caucasus, and the Kalash Festival in Pakistan. Truly, she is an inspiration. A quick show out to Phillipe for assisting in scheduling my conversation with Luisa. A public service reminder, the next Extraordinary Travel Festival will be held on November 15, 2024 in Bangkok. Discount code BANGKOK for $100, so please purchase your ticket today to lock in your savings at the . This $100 discount will be reduced starting September 1. What I did not mention is at ETF we will be hosting a moderated conversation with Luisa and her multi-decade journey to every country in the world. Luisa has a unique voice which is different than the traditional stereotype of a traveler in the extreme travel community. Don't get #FOMO over 170 people are committed! Including of course, Luisa. I would like to thank everyone for their support of Counting Countries, especially my Patrons: Adam “one away” Hickman, Barry Hoffner, Bisa Myles, Ted Nims, Simen Flotvik Mathisen, Ed Hotchkiss, Steph Rowe, Gin, Philippe ‘JL' Izedian, Sunir Joshi, Jorge Serpa, Justine OTB Kirby, Phil “Marmaduke” Marcus, Sonia Zimmermann, Katelyn Jarvis, Carole Southam, Per Flisberg, and Sam Williams for supporting this podcast. For those who listen a lot, I am a big fan of small world stories … and this is relevant when I introduce a new patron Ani Chaturvedi, who I randomly met while getting a Covid test in Armenia the other year. Ani is originally from Mumbai but now is in San Francisco. Regarding travel, Ani was inspired by his mom who made frequent trips to Mauritius and Singapore. He is now Chasing 193 and nearing 70 countries. Welcome aboard! And also a quick thank you to new patron, Craig, unknown last name at this time. Besides hosting a podcast, I listen to a ton of podcast, including community favorites Palle Bo's , and Francis Tapon, WanderLearn. In fact, you can check me out on WanderLearn with Francis speaking about the ETF. But, I am late to the dance with the Maverick Show podcast, hosted by Matt Bowles. Maverick Show has nearly 300 episodes and is ranked in the top 1% of all podcasts. I recently found out about this travel podcast and I have started binging episodes. Matt is a great host who guides the conversation while naturally sharing his travel experiences adding to the conversation. I have heard great conversations with people like Eriva Vivro, who has lived an incredible travel life, living in multiple countries like Qatar, Thailand, Zambia, and now has been wintering in Ghana with her family. Very, very cool. Of course, Counting Countries is all about Chasing 193. Matt is more focussed on digital life and travel, but there are many interesting lessons and parallels within our community. I was in Boston for this recording while Luisa was in Miami. Please listen in and enjoy. Thank you to my - you rock!! …. GUEST HOST: Basil Valentine filling in for Patrick Henningsen.
Do you ever consider going to Hilton Head Island, SC for a fresh-out-of-the-oven French baguette or a raspberry tart that's perhaps gilded with gold flakes and filled with lemon curd? Maybe not, but you might want to reconsider because Hilton Head Social Bakery, with two locations on the island, has been baking that and much more since Chef Philippe Feret and his wife Marissa opened the bakery in 2016. Phillipe was an apprentice in his father's Paris bakery from the age of five, and he soon made restaurants his life, from the famous Parisian restaurant Taillevent, to New York City where he was enlisted to reopen Windows on the World in 1996. He subsequently served as executive chef at Tavern on the Green, The Regency Hotel, Cafe Centro and eventually owned his own restaurant and catering for 15 years. The bakery and his life on Hilton Head seems his most joyous chapter yet, using his father's croissant recipe, and also letting his creativity, enthusiasm for new flavor combinations, classic recipes, and the artistry of sugar work fill the pastry cases daily. He's embraced the island life and given up his chef's coat for shorts and t-shirts in the kitchen, but he admits he still dons it for special occasions.

I met Philippe Block while studying historic masonry structures in Spain last summer. He presented his work and I was blown away. He is a pioneering structural engineer who, as part of his research group Block Research Group, is inventing the future of sustainable construction by blending old knowledge and precedent with new technology, materials and innovation. He's BUILDING off of thousands of years of architectural innovation and deepening our knowledge of how structures really work, with stunning results. And what makes it so impressive is he isn't just doing this in a research lab somewhere--though that is where the ideas are refined--he's implementing them in the real world. Not only is that very difficult to do, overcoming all the obstacles, it also takes a tremendous amount of courage. When I say "the building industry is broken," as I often do, what Phillipe is doing is part of the solution--he's part of pioneering and inventing the future that doesn't exist yet. Enjoy! Sign up for my bimonthly newsletter here to learn more! PHILLIPE'S BIO Philippe Block is a full professor of Architecture and Structures and head of the Institute of Technology in Architecture (ITA) at ETH Zurich, where he co-leads the Block Research Group (BRG) with Dr. Tom Van Mele. He studied architecture and structural engineering at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) in Belgium and at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the US, where he earned his PhD in 2009. The BRG develops sustainable and circular construction solutions through the advancement of computational structural design and innovation in digital fabrication and construction. Specific expertise includes computational form finding, discrete masonry, graphic statics, architectural and structural geometry, digital fabrication and construction, and open-source computation. In January of 1948, Alfred Kinsey releases his first book, Sexual Behavior in the Human Male, igniting a firestorm of controversy across the United States. As the Professor scrambles to capitalize on his newfound fame and pen a sequel, his methodology comes under attack from skeptical academics and religious conservatives. Meanwhile, Kinsey's research team at the Institute of Sex Research embarks on a series of increasingly bizarre – and politically dangerous – sexual adventures. SOURCES: Allen, Judith A. In 1948, Dr. Alfred Kinsey wrote the book on sex. “The Kinsey Report”, as it came to be known, was a pioneering scientific study on the sexual habits of ordinary Americans. Divided into Male and Female Volumes, it challenged longstanding myths about sex and the religious ideology that upheld them. In this first installment of a three-part series, we explore the life, times and motivations of the enigmatic man behind the Kinsey Report – Dr. Alfred Kinsey. SOURCES: Allen, Judith A.
