Kegan Smurf Gill is a Naval Aviator, F18 Super Hornet Pilot, Author, Speaker, and one of the most solid humans you'll ever meet! I am proud to call him friend! Kegan's story is the epitome of The Heroes Journey. From the fastest ejection in Naval history from his F18 at 695 mph just before it crashed in to the Atlantic Ocean to surviving nearly 2 hours in frigid waters, to the ensuing journey just to be able to walk and fly again, to his misdiagnosis of PTSD by the VA when in reality he had a TBI that sent him deeper and deepr in to psychosis. Kegan was able to fight through this and regain his health and well being. He has written a book on his journey to not only tell the his story, but help others who face the vast issues with VA and who are struggling as he was! His story, his openness, and his resilience are the stuff of legends in my opinion and Kegan is above all, inspiring! As a kid from a rough neighborhood, I never dreamed I'd be rubbing shoulders with moguls or riding in a Rolls Royce. Yet, here I am, hosting the Heroes Journey podcast, where we unpack the incredible tales of those who've mastered their fates. Our guest, Mike Barron, epitomizes the rags-to-riches archetype. He shares his ascent from the depths of hardship to a life dripping in luxury, symbolizing hope for every underdog out there. Mike's not just about flaunting success; he's about turning the tables for those who feel unseen, proving anyone can become the CEO of their destiny. The conversation takes a soulful turn as Casey Hermes steps in, offering a spiritual perspective on creating wealth. Casey waxes eloquently about the pristine human spirit and the art of attracting financial success that resonates with our innermost being. His approach isn't about relentless pursuit but about embracing our innate perfection and recognizing the power within. It's a dialogue that stretches beyond the fiscal, touching on self-realization and the profound impact our digital footprints can have on our psyche. Casey's insights serve as a reminder that true affluence comes from within. Wrapping up, we shift our focus to the entrepreneurial grind with a guest who prefers to remain an enigma, embodying the very soul of seizing opportunities. His story of leaving a stable partnership to start a million-dollar enterprise underscores the relentless belief in self-potential. We delve into the guts of his business model, a testament to empowering salespeople for financial victory online. And through his narrative, he spotlights the raw truth of fatherhood and fortune's whims. Each story is a masterclass in resilience and the audacity to shine amidst the trials of gaining visibility. Join us for this compelling journey of transformation, strength, and the courage to make a mark.
Stepping into the studio with me, Bryan Hopkins, Matt Ferranti brought more than just his guitar; he carried tales of a transformative journey that's every bit as melodic as his tunes. As we traded stories of life on the road and shared stages with the likes of Brett Young and Gavin DeGraw, Matt's narrative wove through the highs and lows of an artist's life. Joined by Jay Hartley, we unpacked the essence of Nashville's creative kinship, revealing how the city's collaborative heartbeat helped artists like Matt pivot from disrupted tours to new beginnings during the pandemic's peak. The thread of music's intertwining with life's pivotal moments was a recurring melody in our conversation. Matt opened up about the personal courage it took to leave a secure gig to chase his own dreams, reflecting the same bold spirit that led him to Nashville and into a successful partnership with Jay. We celebrated the release of Matt's EP, a testament to the support within the music community, as Brett Young not only co-produced the record but provided songs, showcasing the depth of their professional bond and camaraderie. As our session drew to a close, Matt graced us with a heart-stirring performance of "Find Other Hearts to Break," a raw, unreleased track that left us hanging on every chord. We wrapped up the symphony of our chat with a nod to the authenticity of artists like Jelly Roll and a moving rendition of "Love Somebody," which served as a reminder of music's enduring power to capture the soul of life's journey. It's not just an episode; it's an intimate backstage pass to the stories and songs that define the Heroes Journey podcast.

Growing up in the echoes of classic rock and country music, Travis Cormier's journey from Moncton to the spotlight unfolds with raw honesty in our latest conversation. We kick things off by reminiscing about those first musical discoveries that charted the course of our lives, connecting over the sounds that shaped our dreams. As Travis treats us to an exclusive live performance, you can feel the pulse of his musical heritage, and it's an electric reminder of the power of a song to tell a story. Travis's narrative takes us from the comforts of his small-town beginnings to the dazzling and daunting streets of Hollywood. The emotional highs and lows as he recounts his experiences at the Music Institution of Technology, the grappling with visa issues, and battling depression, draw you into the reality of an artist's struggle. But resilience is the heart of this tale, with his ascent to "The Voice" Canada and the life-changing opportunities that followed, including working with industry legends and sharing the stage with the likes of Steven Tyler. In the final act of our session, Travis opens up about the serendipitous leap into musical theater and the creation of new music that resonates with his evolving artistry. His anecdotes about unexpected 21st birthday outcomes and diving into the role of a lifetime in "Bat Out of Hell" are a testament to the unpredictable nature of life in the arts. As we reflect on the communal spirit of music and its healing power, Travis's insights into songwriting and inspirations round off a conversation that's as inspiring as it is enlightening. Join us for a deep and soulful exploration into the life of a musician who's not just making songs, but making history.

Erie encounters at the Pioneer Saloon and the Goldfield Hotel were just the beginning of our spooky adventures, but the real ghosts were the missed connections and collaborations from our past. That all changed when Austin Alvarez of Bizarre Junkeez fame joined the fray, and together, we've woven a tapestry of tales ranging from the supernatural to the deeply personal. Our latest episode is a roller coaster through the highs and lows of the music industry, the transformation from musician to promoter, and finally, to podcaster navigating the demands of fatherhood and a "big boy job."
As the neon lights of Las Vegas buzz with the excitement of Super Bowl weekend, I'm joined by the remarkable Derek Duranslet to reminisce about our days in the Lucky Strike limelight and mull over his rise from Vice President to Senior Vice President of a leading company. Our conversation is a tribute to the powerful role personal connections play in shaping our professional landscapes, with a nod to the lasting influence of iconic spots like Lucky Strike, a haven for Hollywood's elite. Together, we also shine a spotlight on the upcoming 2024 Gridiron Great Celebrity Golf Classic, a convergence of sports, charity, and the joyous spirit of camaraderie. Underneath the pomp of celebrity events, we unearth heartfelt narratives from NFL legends advocating for change. The likes of Kyle Turley and Jim McMahon have sparked a crucial dialogue questioning the NFL's stance on cannabis use for pain management, an issue poised to redefine athlete welfare. I share a pinch-me moment singing the national anthem amidst sports greats, reinforcing the profound sense of brotherhood that permeates these charity golf events. Furthermore, we venture into the evolving relationship between cannabis businesses and sports sponsorships, particularly in legally complex states like Nevada, and how pioneers are navigating these waters. Wrapping up our engaging session, Derek and I paint a picture of the electric atmosphere at the celebrity golf classic, where fans and sports heroes mingle on the green. Personal growth tales intertwine with the larger narrative, highlighting Vegas's unique ability to foster serendipitous connections and friendships. We tease the prospect of candid discussions about cannabis in professional sports at upcoming events, stoking the flames of anticipation for what's to come. This episode is a compelling cocktail of personal stories, business acumen, and the undeniable thrill of a city alive with the roar of the crowd and the promise of change.
Navigating the jagged path of personal redemption and family intricacies can be as treacherous as it is enlightening. Brett Raymer of "Tanked" fame joins me, Bryan Hopkins, in a raw and riveting conversation that peels back the curtain on his life, both in front of the camera and away from it. We tackle everything from Brett's journey through the pain of a career-ending injury and early brushes with substance use to the efforts to clear his name when his reputation and family's peace were on the line. My own story interweaves with Brett's, revealing a transformative move from New York to Las Vegas that sparked a sequence of life-altering events. Listeners will hear tales of the Vegas nightlife that led to love and trouble, and the hustle of the '90s that forged the bonds of family and friendship—sometimes in the fire of betrayal. It's a saga that proves the glitz and glamour of television fame comes with its own set of sacrifices and emotional tolls. But amidst the backdrop of public life, the potency of human connection stands undeterred. This episode isn't shy about diving into the heartache of a hidden extramarital affair, the strain of addiction, and the financial scandals that arise when the cameras stop rolling. We unravel the complexities of keeping secrets for the sake of success, and the resilience it takes to rise from the ashes of a canceled TV show and a business in turmoil. Brett's story is one of persistence, of rebuilding, and of the unwavering love for his family—a testament to the strength found in vulnerability and truth. @smp.ink @stickypawsstudios @jpscomputers @elvismonroe @trubeautybytrevor5498 @WestCoastTattooParlor Sponsors: https://www.instagram.com/smp.ink/ Podcast Socials: https://www.instagram.com/heroesjourneypodcast/ https://www.facebook.com/heroesjourneypodcast https://twitter.com/HeroesJourneyP https://www.tiktok.com/@heroesjourneypodcast https://www.instagram.com/elvismonroeofficial/

This week on the Team Never Quit Podcast, Marcus and Melanie delve into the dynamic world of education and entrepreneurship with special guests, Jeff and Laura Sandefer of Acton Academy. Jeff, a seasoned entrepreneur and esteemed Socratic Guide, has a remarkable dual life, having founded multiple successful businesses and earned accolades as an outstanding teacher at the University of Texas. Laura, co-founder of Acton Academy and an author, takes us on her Hero's Journey in education, chronicled in her book "Courage to Grow." Acton Academy's learner-driven model has spread across the globe with over 130 locations, emphasizing real-world projects, apprenticeships, and Socratic discussions. The school's foundation lies in the Hero's Journey, a narrative pattern guiding children through adventures, victories, and transformations. Laura passionately discusses Acton Academy's commitment to inspiring children to find their callings, employing adaptive game-based programs and online tools like Khan Academy to teach core skills. Laura and Jeff share their passion for giving children hands-on entrepreneurial experience through Acton Academy's Children's Business Fairs. These fairs provide children with opportunities to be entrepreneurs, fostering confidence, imparting valuable lessons, and preparing them for success in a rapidly changing world. Join us on this insightful journey with Jeff and Laura Sandefer as they discuss Acton Academy's innovative approach to education, combining entrepreneurship, the Hero's Journey, and hands-on experiences to inspire and equip the next generation of independent thinkers and lifelong learners. Website – https://www.actonacademy.org/ Sponsors: - aeropress.com/TNQ - Uncommongoods.com/TNQ In this episode you will hear: • The best teacher in the best school in Austin TX just told us not to send our children to traditional school because they'd be chained to a desk and lectured to all day. (7:17) • I'm not homeschooling. That wasn't in my blood at all. (7:33) • One of the narratives of the experience is The Heroes Journey. (9:25) • An ordinary person hears a call, sets out on an adventure, wrestles monsters, has mentors and guides, seeking a treasure all the way. And they may or may not get the treasure, but they return home a changed person, ready to share their new ideas and character with the world around them. Then, they set out on a new adventure again. (9:38) • Every time they get knocked down – they may not win, but they'll get back up. (10:13) • What a hero's journey does is distinguish hero vs victim. Any child at an Acton Academy starts claiming the identity of the hero. That's not someone who wins all the time; its someone who gets back up after they fall down. (10:23) • The hero takes responsibility and starts problem-solving, whereas a victim outs the blame on somebody else. (10:59) • They learn ways to work through problems with gritty decision-making (11:28) • The 3 big monsters starting at age 6: We start wresting with Victim-hood, Resistance, and Distraction. (12:18) • Sometimes your big brother needs to pick you up and say “get back in the fight.” (16:11) • IQ is so overrated - because its perseverance, grit, and getting along with people. That's what really matters. (19:30) • People who are there because they want to be there, they choose to be there, and they're on a mission for their life (21:08) • No adult on campus is ever allowed to answer a question. (25:43) • Things get chaotic – Part of the model is letting things fall into chaos, and let order arise as the young people figure out how to solve the problem. (26:41) • What's the best thing about Acton Academy? They'll say freedom. (27:11) • We believe every single child is a genius, who deserves to find a calling and change the world. (42:15) • The cave you fear to enter is where your treasure lies. (44:37)
Selling and storytelling in sales is a dynamic combination that transforms a mere transaction into a captivating and meaningful experience. Effective salesmanship is not just about pushing a product; it's about understanding the customer's needs and desires, uncovering their pain points, and presenting a solution that resonates with their emotions and aspirations. Storytelling plays a pivotal role in this process, as it weaves a narrative that engages, empathizes, and connects with the customer personally. A well-crafted story humanizes the brand and fosters trust, building a bridge of understanding that paves the way for a genuine, long-lasting relationship between the seller and the buyer. In this episode, Tom Jackobs shares tips and strategies for effective selling, how to craft and use personal stories, the role of public speaking in sales, and how he revitalized his business through effective selling and storytelling but also transitioned to coaching other professionals. Tom is an entrepreneur whose journey began as a 16-year-old mobile DJ, and he unknowingly delved into Direct Response Marketing before the internet era. He dabbled in various businesses, including fitness, where he dramatically increased annual revenue from $100,000 to $500,000 in one year through effective selling techniques. After simplifying his fitness business, he transitioned to coaching other professionals and traveling worldwide, selling approximately $4 million worth of his coaching program. Today, he teaches service providers the art of storytelling to enhance their sales efforts, demonstrating the transformative power of persistence, adaptability, and storytelling in business. Tune in! Episode 232 welcomes Matt LaFleur who shares his journey as a rare disease patient with Friedreich's ataxia (FA). Matt talks about how he transitioned from viewing himself as a victim of FA to seeing himself as a hero in his own story. He describes the impact of the diagnosis as an "inciting event" and highlights how the hero's journey is not just a linear path but a cyclical one. Matt emphasizes the importance of taking responsibility and finding little victories along the way, despite the ongoing presence of FA. The discussion touches on various aspects of life with a rare disease, relationships, and personal growth. Matt also shares his experience of presenting at the FA Symposium and how he and his co-presenters used mythical characters to relate their topics to the hero's journey concept. The episode offers a unique perspective on finding inspiration and resilience in the face of adversity. This episode of the MAPS podcast takes us through the deeply moving and inspirational story of Justin Lapree, a veteran who nearly lost everything and then came through the otherside to help lead the charge on providing sacred medicinal care to our veterans and first responders. No single population has moved the needle in helping the world to understand how psychedelics can be used effective than our veterans. Justin's story will move you in ways that are both inspirational and frustrating when you learn how under served the veteran population really is. Justin Lapree served in the Marine Corps from 2001 to 2005. His second deployment to Iraq in 2004 left him at the bottom of a dark abyss upon his return home, and the Middle East took something from him, that he wouldn't come to understand for years to come. During his five years as an Austin Firefighter, he would witness a magnitude of traumatic events where lives were lost; mass shootings, the Austin serial bomber, consistent overdoses, and fatality collisions. While he had come so far since his failed suicide attempt in 2018, he noticed the darkness once more creeping in because of his job environment. In February 2022, he resigned from the Fire Department knowing he'd found a higher purpose and wanted to serve in another way. Thus, Heroic Path to Light was born. His vision was to create a non-profit that served the Veteran, First Responder and Gold/White star communities in hopes that their suffering could end by building community and utilizing sacred entheogenic ceremonies. "As the Founder and President of Heroic Path to Light, I'm still on my journey, but want to meet you where you are, because I have seen firsthand that healing happens in community and together, we can get through anything."
