So we've been religiously using TikTok lately and unless you're living under a rock, that's where all the Gen Z's are hanging out. This week we are giving you the guide to Gen Z so you can understand and adapt yourself to fit in. Some things you need to think about are:Don't wear skinny jeansDon't use emojis unless it's this one
Surprised? We're dropping in your feed a bit earlier this week because we wanted to celebrate Lunar New Year with you guysThis week we're talking about how Lunar New Year has become more important as we get older - especially if you're a child of immigrants and don't have many family near you.We understand that for many people, Lunar New Year will be a bit different. Just hours before we started recording, our city Victoria in Australia went into a 5 day lockdown sowe're also spending it a bit different. In this episode, we talk about New Year superstitions and how some of them sound a bit unrealistic. We also discuss how even though we may not necessarily believe in many of them, we have kind of followed them by default because it has been drilled into us since we were young by our parents. We also discuss whether as millennials living in Western countries, if we will be continuing these traditions. This week for recommendation time, we are recommending you to get behind the #AsiansAreHuman & #TheyCantBurnUsAll movement to rise awareness about the increased hate crimes against Asians everywhere around the world. Another month, another cultural appropriation! This week we are switching things up. You might notice the show sounds a bit different and that's because we'll only be focusing on one topic per week to give us more time to really dig deeper into the topics we cover. Also, we're both expecting really a busy year for us personally so we wanted to make it manageable for ourselves.BUT let's talk about the problematic sex and relationship coach Kim Anami's music video called 'Kung Fu Vagina'. Anami landed in hot waters last week after she culturally appropriated Asian culture to sell and promote her online courses. There's a few problematic things about the videoIt samples Carl Douglas' catchy but problematic 70's song ' Kung Fu Fighting' which has the oriental riffThe music video fetishizes Asian womenAnami wears chopsticks in her hairMismatch Chinese & Japanese culture: although the intention to appropriate Chinese culture, she wears a Kimino...It uses the WONTON FONT, which further perpetuates what Westerners think Chinese characters look likeSince recording, we have learnt that she's been deleting comments about those pointing out the cultural appropriation and Twitter users have found that she's publicly liked anti-BLM tweets. Do we see a pattern here? This week, Phil recommends watching the Korean drama 'True Beauty' which is available on Viki. Hello Juicy Lemoners! We're taking a bit of a break this week so we're revisiting some of our favourite moments in the past year! Can you believe it's been almost a year since LEMON was launched?!Fighting anti-Asian racism in AustraliaRising anti-China sentiments in the early days of COVID-19 led to an increased number of racist attacks towards Asian-Australians. In this segment, we discuss and share our experiences of the casual racism we faced but also talk about how many Asian-Australians actually don't know where the line is drawn for 'casual racism' because it's something that we've all grown up with and dealt with on a daily basis. Why do Asian people Anglicised our names? In this segment, we explore why our parents decided to give us English names and why so many international students coming to Australia are encouraged by their teachers to adopt and Anglicise their names. The Asian Black ProblemBlack Lives Matters has been one of the biggest movements of our generation but for the Asian community, it has always been viewed as a white vs black person problem. In this episode, we discuss why Asian pop culture and societies in Asia need to do better to further the discussion around colourism and BLM.Join in on the discussion on our socials!Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/lemonpodcastshow/Instagram: http://bit.ly/2TPE0dfTwitter: http://bit.ly/2TEpfLaOur Spotify Playlist: https://spoti.fi/2IMmpxJHosted by:Phillip Kuoch: https://bit.ly/PhilsIGThomas Tan Tan: http://bit.ly/2TU4QCk Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/lemon. What’s in a name? Particularly in Australia, having a distinctly foreign name has its positives and negatives, and I’ve always had this inkling that there’s a different way we think about names in Australia compared to Chinese culture in particular, but I could never quite put my finger on it. This episode we explore how this difference in names affects us.Shoes Off is a written, produced and edited podcast that educates, connects and inspires Asian Australians, because we don’t talk about culture enough. This week, we're revisiting one of our favourite chats!Dami Im first came onto our screens in 2013 where she went on to win the entire X FACTOR competition. Despite her CRAZY talented vocal chords, people felt the need to voice their opinion that she did not deserve to win because she looks Chinese (even though she was actually born in South Korea)When you think of Asian representation in media, how many can you actually think of? Not many right? So like most Asians in Western countries, we look to Dami because she’s on the forefront of creation representation in mainstream media. She has even gone on to having a number ONE single and album as well as earning us our highest placement as runner up on Eurovision, where she was watched by more than 200 million people. In this week’s IN CONVERSATION, Dami opens up about her childhood and how she was one of four Asian kids in her school. This week, we're taking it back to one our favourite interviews. On this episode, we are joined by the founders of Subtle Asian Traits, Angela and Kerry Kang. In late 2018, the Kang siblings and their friends started a Facebook group during a weekend Chinese class. What was meant to be fun turned into a cultural phenomenon. Hundreds of thousands of Asian millennials joined the Facebook group in a matter of days. The group is now the biggest Asian community on Facebook but with more than 1.5 million members, SAT is also one of the biggest Facebook groups in the world. From juicy unposted memes to being invited to speak at Facebook, we talk about everything with co-founders of Subtle Asian Traits, Kerry and Angela. We discuss the humble beginnings of Subtle Asian Traits which was only founded a year ago by a group of friends that met at Chinese School. Was this the only useful that has come out of Chinese School? What started out as memes about collecting toothpicks and serviettes at restaurants became the biggest community on Facebook. This immense response was because this was the first time there really was something relatable for Asian-Australians and Asian-Americans.Subtle Asian Traits didn’t just become a safe place for bubble tea addicts to find one another, but it became a comfortable place to share life experiences. Who else could relate to the strict career expectations that migrant parents place on their children? These posts harvest great love and support by other members of the group, where strangers often comment encouragement and advice as they feel a sense of bond and connectedness with other members in the community.Despite the highs, Angela and Kerry share the difficulties the group has had. This includes thriving for more diverse representation of all Asian ethnicities within the groups, and, the struggles of monitoring and approving every single post to ensure quality memes.Subtle Asian Traits: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1343933772408499/Join our Facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/lemonpodcastFollow on Instagram: http://instagram.com/lemonpodcastHosted by:Phillip Kuoch: https://www.instagram.com/sirkuoch/Tom Tan: https://www.instagram.com/tommayo/ See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Due to COVID-19, many Asian people around the world are experiencing heightened racism like nothing before.Unfortunately, with COVID-19 originating from Wuhan, China, hygiene practises in Asian countries and culture are being questioned by the global community. Videos like these are damaging to the Asian community because it generalises all Asian people and allows people to write hurtful comments like:“Imagine the habits they have behind closed doors especially when they work in the food industry” - one user wrote under the videoSure, it can be easy to just say all Asians are dirty and unhygienic (rewind)but perhaps first... maybe we should talk about some useful hygiene practises. #1 -No shoes in the houseYou know you’re at an Asian household when you see a massive shoe rack at the front door. Almost in every Asian house, guests are required to take off their shoes before entering the house. The reason is quite simple - there is a lot of germs and bacteria that you collect from your outdoor activities - According to the University of Arizona your shoes have 421,000 bacteria! So, please. Take off your shoes before you enter your house! #2 - Hand washing dishesThere’s a lot of jokes about Asian parents not using dishwashers and preferring to hand-wash each plate. But if there was one thing that we all learnt from COVID-19, it is how important using soap and disinfectants are. When Asian people wash dishes, we make sure that each plate is scrubbed with soap and washed off with fresh clean water - no soaking it all in the same old water! #3 Showering before sleeping It is the old-age debate in the Western world about whether to shower in the morning or at night. But in Asian culture, we get taught by our parents to change into home clothes when arriving back home and taking a nice warm shower before bed. The reason? You’re covered in sweat & germs throughout the day and you don’t want to bring all of that back into your home. And plus, it’s relaxing to have a warm shower before bed! #4 Wearing a mask when you’re sickIn the early days of COVID-19, many people in the Western world were confronted and offended when Asian people began wearing face masks.. However, fast-forward a month or two later, there is an international shortage of masks. What most people don’t realise is that, Asian people wear face masks to prevent getting other people sick.
