Surprised? We're dropping in your feed a bit earlier this week because we wanted to celebrate Lunar New Year with you guysThis week we're talking about how Lunar New Year has become more important as we get older - especially if you're a child of immigrants and don't have many family near you.We understand that for many people, Lunar New Year will be a bit different. Just hours before we started recording, our city Victoria in Australia went into a 5 day lockdown sowe're also spending it a bit different. In this episode, we talk about New Year superstitions and how some of them sound a bit unrealistic. We also discuss how even though we may not necessarily believe in many of them, we have kind of followed them by default because it has been drilled into us since we were young by our parents. We also discuss whether as millennials living in Western countries, if we will be continuing these traditions. This week for recommendation time, we are recommending you to get behind the #AsiansAreHuman & #TheyCantBurnUsAll movement to rise awareness about the increased hate crimes against Asians everywhere around the world. Another month, another cultural appropriation! This week we are switching things up. You might notice the show sounds a bit different and that's because we'll only be focusing on one topic per week to give us more time to really dig deeper into the topics we cover. Also, we're both expecting really a busy year for us personally so we wanted to make it manageable for ourselves.BUT let's talk about the problematic sex and relationship coach Kim Anami's music video called 'Kung Fu Vagina'. Anami landed in hot waters last week after she culturally appropriated Asian culture to sell and promote her online courses. There's a few problematic things about the videoIt samples Carl Douglas' catchy but problematic 70's song ' Kung Fu Fighting' which has the oriental riffThe music video fetishizes Asian womenAnami wears chopsticks in her hairMismatch Chinese & Japanese culture: although the intention to appropriate Chinese culture, she wears a Kimino...It uses the WONTON FONT, which further perpetuates what Westerners think Chinese characters look likeSince recording, we have learnt that she's been deleting comments about those pointing out the cultural appropriation and Twitter users have found that she's publicly liked anti-BLM tweets. Do we see a pattern here? This week, Phil recommends watching the Korean drama 'True Beauty' which is available on Viki. In 2018, this young CEO established Goldelucks Bakery! With hard work, a little perseverance and dedication, he and his family began to combine the perfect ingredients for these sweet treats. Initially when the pandemic hit, their business took a major hit due to food/ordering restrictions. But after going back to the drawing board and revamping their business approach, they figured out the recipe to success. Being so innovative and determined, caused him to receive a new delivery order every 51 SECONDS and that was DURING THE PANDEMIC! Here is a little trivia for you as it pertains to Phil's main purpose. Is it the 3 stores that he has? Is it the customers lined up around the bakery waiting for their chance to order? Or could it be that 24 Karat Gold donut he created? No! His perseverance is fueled by one major thing and that is to give his deserving parents the life that they have always dreamed of. Press play and enjoy! Connect with Phil: https://www.goldelucks.com.au/ IG @goldelucksdoughnuts Connect with Coach Tea: www.cu-nw.com IG @ChangedUpNowWhat Thank You For Your Continued Support!

Hello Juicy Lemoners! We're taking a bit of a break this week so we're revisiting some of our favourite moments in the past year! Can you believe it's been almost a year since LEMON was launched?!Fighting anti-Asian racism in AustraliaRising anti-China sentiments in the early days of COVID-19 led to an increased number of racist attacks towards Asian-Australians. In this segment, we discuss and share our experiences of the casual racism we faced but also talk about how many Asian-Australians actually don't know where the line is drawn for 'casual racism' because it's something that we've all grown up with and dealt with on a daily basis. Why do Asian people Anglicised our names? In this segment, we explore why our parents decided to give us English names and why so many international students coming to Australia are encouraged by their teachers to adopt and Anglicise their names. The Asian Black ProblemBlack Lives Matters has been one of the biggest movements of our generation but for the Asian community, it has always been viewed as a white vs black person problem. Hello Juicy Lemoners! Welcome to this week's episode!SEGMENT 1: Guess vs Ask CultureThere's two types of people in this world - guess people and ask people.Guess culture is where you're raised to only ask for favours after overthinking about it and if you know the answer is going to be yes whereas, ask culture are people who are taught to just ask for things because what's the worst thing that can happen? This week, we're revisiting one of our favourite chats!Dami Im first came onto our screens in 2013 where she went on to win the entire X FACTOR competition. Despite her CRAZY talented vocal chords, people felt the need to voice their opinion that she did not deserve to win because she looks Chinese (even though she was actually born in South Korea)When you think of Asian representation in media, how many can you actually think of? Not many right? So like most Asians in Western countries, we look to Dami because she’s on the forefront of creation representation in mainstream media. She has even gone on to having a number ONE single and album as well as earning us our highest placement as runner up on Eurovision, where she was watched by more than 200 million people. In this week’s IN CONVERSATION, Dami opens up about her childhood and how she was one of four Asian kids in her school. This week, we're taking it back to one our favourite interviews. On this episode, we are joined by the founders of Subtle Asian Traits, Angela and Kerry Kang. In late 2018, the Kang siblings and their friends started a Facebook group during a weekend Chinese class. What was meant to be fun turned into a cultural phenomenon. Hundreds of thousands of Asian millennials joined the Facebook group in a matter of days. The group is now the biggest Asian community on Facebook but with more than 1.5 million members, SAT is also one of the biggest Facebook groups in the world. From juicy unposted memes to being invited to speak at Facebook, we talk about everything with co-founders of Subtle Asian Traits, Kerry and Angela. We discuss the humble beginnings of Subtle Asian Traits which was only founded a year ago by a group of friends that met at Chinese School. Was this the only useful that has come out of Chinese School? What started out as memes about collecting toothpicks and serviettes at restaurants became the biggest community on Facebook. This immense response was because this was the first time there really was something relatable for Asian-Australians and Asian-Americans.Subtle Asian Traits didn’t just become a safe place for bubble tea addicts to find one another, but it became a comfortable place to share life experiences. Who else could relate to the strict career expectations that migrant parents place on their children? These posts harvest great love and support by other members of the group, where strangers often comment encouragement and advice as they feel a sense of bond and connectedness with other members in the community.Despite the highs, Angela and Kerry share the difficulties the group has had. This includes thriving for more diverse representation of all Asian ethnicities within the groups, and, the struggles of monitoring and approving every single post to ensure quality memes.Subtle Asian Traits: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1343933772408499/Join our Facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/lemonpodcastFollow on Instagram: http://instagram.com/lemonpodcastHosted by:Phillip Kuoch: https://www.instagram.com/sirkuoch/Tom Tan: https://www.instagram.com/tommayo/ See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

How did Phillip and Goldelucks Dougnuts Sell 1500 Dougnuts in TWO HOURS!!? On this episode of the Bean Talking Podcast we talk to Phillip Kuoch On July 12, 2016, Philip posted a picture online of Goldeluck’s new croissant-doughnut called the ‘dossant’ and people from all over Melbourne would come to the little suburban bakery in Croydon at 5:30 am opening time. The dossant began to take a life of its own. From selling just 6 dossants on the first day, the numbers of dossants began to multiply rapidly. At Goldeluck’s first pop up store, more than 1,500 dossants was sold out in 1.5 hours with a one per person purchase limit. Not too long after the dossants were introduced, Goldeluck’s made global headlines when it introduced the world’s first croissant-doughnut covered in real 24 karat edible gold. The gold dossant was featured in Australia’s mainstream media including the Herald Sun, Broadsheet, Nova FM, and made headlines in countries such as China, Indonesia and America. In April 2018, the Goldeluck’s Doughnut brand was established when Goldeluck’s launched its first store dedicated to its doughnuts at Eastland Shopping Centre. Due to COVID-19, many Asian people around the world are experiencing heightened racism like nothing before.Unfortunately, with COVID-19 originating from Wuhan, China, hygiene practises in Asian countries and culture are being questioned by the global community. Videos like these are damaging to the Asian community because it generalises all Asian people and allows people to write hurtful comments like:“Imagine the habits they have behind closed doors especially when they work in the food industry” - one user wrote under the videoSure, it can be easy to just say all Asians are dirty and unhygienic (rewind)but perhaps first... maybe we should talk about some useful hygiene practises. #1 -No shoes in the houseYou know you’re at an Asian household when you see a massive shoe rack at the front door. Almost in every Asian house, guests are required to take off their shoes before entering the house. The reason is quite simple - there is a lot of germs and bacteria that you collect from your outdoor activities - According to the University of Arizona your shoes have 421,000 bacteria! So, please. Take off your shoes before you enter your house! #2 - Hand washing dishesThere’s a lot of jokes about Asian parents not using dishwashers and preferring to hand-wash each plate. But if there was one thing that we all learnt from COVID-19, it is how important using soap and disinfectants are. When Asian people wash dishes, we make sure that each plate is scrubbed with soap and washed off with fresh clean water - no soaking it all in the same old water! #3 Showering before sleeping It is the old-age debate in the Western world about whether to shower in the morning or at night. But in Asian culture, we get taught by our parents to change into home clothes when arriving back home and taking a nice warm shower before bed. The reason? You’re covered in sweat & germs throughout the day and you don’t want to bring all of that back into your home. And plus, it’s relaxing to have a warm shower before bed! #4 Wearing a mask when you’re sickIn the early days of COVID-19, many people in the Western world were confronted and offended when Asian people began wearing face masks.. Joanna, tell us what is the theme of this week's cover cover up?[00:01:03] I don't it would be good how to explain it. Our director.[00:01:08] Look, I was going for like an 80s or 90s theme, so I Googled 80s, 90s fetish shit with fruits because, you know, we have the LEMON show and people just posing with fur in a very weird way. So with I decided, hey, Phil, why don't we just take off our shirts and pears with fruit so mildly erotic?[00:01:25] Join us first time I'm watching gay porn. What was that like? No, it's not your first time. Not your first time. Oh, I don't know. It was it was an experience.[00:01:39] We had some really weird shots involving tops.[00:01:43] And I was a bit but also bit conscious. Were you? Yes. You know, the thing is, you're conscious about it because we live in a neighbourhood where old, like everybody knows each other. And the windows were put on a show for the night. And we it just happened that we'll furnish having a photo shoot just as school was finishing as well. So I had the school boundaries. Right. Because you look quite close with school as well. Well, like that introduction that's my name is Thomas Tan. And I'm Philip Kuoch. And coming up later on the show, we speak to Ophie Ho, who is a go boss and how she's transforming women's lives around Australia with her business. But first, how is your week? Had a very fun week. Actually, we went to the Pentatonix concert. We did.[00:00:41] And I swear, I feel like because I like an acapella group. Right. I feel like everyone that was at the concert was like a sing off, because when you want to get this crouse's sing it just sing like a massive choir. Anyone Senate. Amazing.[00:00:54] I think you can actually see the hard work and the dedication like the years that it takes for you to get to know your band members as well as know exactly what you have to do because harmonies are hardly telling you. It's like you have to sing in perfect pitch key and get to know exactly where to go. Boop, boop, boop. If you miss it like a doo doo or a bup bup. That means that you pretty much share the whole whole group off.[00:01:14] I love how you appreciate, like, you know, the music side of it. For me, the whole time I was thinking about was the thing about the business side. I was like probably the most profitable band in the world because we we did discuss a little bit how much they were earning that night. Because like they didn't have any bandmates. It's just that making sounds of their mouth. So so like they didn't have to hire like dancers, all a bandmates. It was just the making sounds of their mouth. But they got sick.[00:01:40] If one of them or two of them got sick, then like concerts cancelled.[00:01:43] Let's take a live look now outside of work. Ariana Grande, they lick and spit on the merchandise. There can be a hundred people in the room. Rise and shine. China. China. China. China. China. China. China.[00:02:04] We... And joining us on the show today, we talk to a makeup guru and trends activists Kara Tran. But first, how is your week?[00:00:51] I'm just wondering what we did this week. But this week has been a big blow for me because of Valentine's Day. So as you guys know, I earn a donut company. And as part of that company, we make Derek gift boxes and did it because of stuff like that. So Valentine's Day was one of our biggest days of the year where people order declaring arts and days for their loved ones. And yes, so Friday was a big day. And thank you for helping me, Thomas. You're most welcome. How did you feel? Have you ever recovered from the Friday news?[00:01:20] It wasn't too bad. I think last year was a lot worse. And this year? This year, a lot more organized. But you woke up at 2:00 a.m.. I did.[00:01:28] And I woke up at 3:00 a.m. But knowing that, it's just that even the days leading up towards I was working like 10, 12 hours, Ali, days preparing everything for its big day, but everything went smoothly compared to last year.[00:01:40] So this year, we did about 200 deliveries and 20 orders, which is insane amount of orders. We had about 15 drivers going out to deliver all around Melbourne. And yeah, thanks to you, it all went very smoothly. Helps keep everything intact.[00:01:55] Yes, I did. But I'm surprised by how serious people take Valentine's Day. Yeah, I like because it was it was a crazy day and there's a lot of orders going through.[00:02:04] Obviously, we're gonna miss... Hello, hello! Welcome to this week's episode. On today's episode, Tom breaks down during the recording after we discuss about the story of Korean singer Yang Joon-il, also dubbed as the 90's G-Dragon.If you're not aware of his story, the singer was an up and coming singer brought from America to Korea. He wasn't very fluent in Korean and used to incorporate a lot of English into his music at a time where Korea's relationship with the English speaking world was not looked at positively. He was literally unfairly kicked out of the country due to his English. He went back to America and became an English teacher before spending most of his life as a waiter in a restaurant. Thanks to a trend in Korea called 'Newtro' millennials discovered the G-Dragon lookalike and learnt about his story. His story touched the nation and a search began to search for him. After a gruelling long search, a TV show in Korea found the singer and he was able to perform his songs again after 30 years. We also talk about the Super Bowl half time and how Shakira and Jennifer Lopez KILLED it. Plus, there's a Christian activist who's trying to sue them for trillions of dollars for the 'inappropriate' performance - his words, not ours. There was also a 90's magazine competition running and the prize was the opportunity to 'sleep' with US President Donald Trump. Any takers?AND FINALLY, we discuss the rules of texting. Hello our juicy lemons! This week we have finally recovered and feeling like crap on last episode (we had one hour's sleep and put together the show last minute, sorry!)On today's episode, we talk about the recovery from our trip in China and how we actually thought we had the coronavirus. Thomas was showing similar symptoms and so he went to the hospital and was isolated. Long story short, we freaked out for no reason and it turned out to be a different kind of virus. Here's what discussed this week:James Corden responds to reports that he actually doesn’t drive in Car Pool KaraokeLate night talk show host James Corden has responded to rumours that actually doesn’t drive in his hit segment Car Pool Karaoke. A video of him and Justin Bieber filming a segment went viral this week of their car getting towed. It was viewed more than 13m times. He said on-air that he is normally driving unless the segment required some dangerous things such as dancing or required a lot of attention. In this case, the segment with JB was towed because producers thought it would be more safe. Taylor Swift Talks About Eating Disorders in New Netflix Doc: Why That MattersTaylor Swift’s new documentary on Netflix has dropped and she made several candid revelations about her life. The singer reveals that she’s now learnt to not look pictures of herself every day because it can trigger her. "You don't ever say to yourself, 'I have an eating disorder,' but you know you're making a list of everything that you put in your mouth that day and you know that's probably not right, but then again there's so many diet blogs that tell you that's what you should," she says.HBO to remake ‘Parasite’ into English seriesHBO has announced that they’ll be re-making Bong Joon-ho’s blockbuster hit ‘Parasite’ into an English series. The news comes after the Korean film has broken records left and right and scoring nominations and wins at the Academy Awards, Golden Globes and SAGs awards. Why does Hollywood have to keep re-making Asian cinema and not just appreciate it for what it is?Bong’s speech at Golden Globes: “Once you overcome the 1-inch-tall barrier of subtitles, you will be introduced to so many more amazing films.”Billie Eilish got the iconic sound in 'Bad Guy' from Sydney!!While the Grammy Award winner chatted to Rolling Stone recently about her hit song 'Bad Guy', she revealed the inspiration behind the famous tune. She said that she was out for a walk in Sydney crossing the road with her mum before hearing the ‘doop doop’ waiting sound at the crossing. She recorded the tune and brought it back to her brother and incorporated it into ‘bad guy’. Does Anyone Have a ‘Personal Life’ Anymore? How do you respond when someone asks you ‘what do you do in your personal life?’We recently came across an essay which talked about whether or not ‘personal life’ existed anymore in this day and age due to the rise of social media, people turning hobbies into hustles, finding ways to make their lives more efficient and turning their selves into ‘brands’. So what does a personal life in this day and age mean? I like looking back now that it wasn't even that good, but I really wanted it and other imagining myself getting the Oscars and everything.[00:00:16] And so we had three rounds and it was just to be like a kind of schoolgirl who got lost and got into a bit of trouble. Drag Race star Gia Gunn has opened up for the first time about postponing her transition surgery to compete on the latest season of All Stars. Speaking to Lemon Podcast, Gunn said, “My surgery was postponed because I knew if I had gotten surgery, I wouldn’t have been able to go on the show.”Gunn said having the opportunity to be the first transgender woman on the show outweighed her own priorities to have surgery and that she had used the money she saved to buy outfits to compete. She later started a GoFundMe page to raise $30,000 for her surgery after competing on the show last year. The decision to return for All Stars was not an easy decision for Gia Gunn, who famously called RuPaul out for his comments on why transgender women weren’t allowed to compete on the franchise. After apologising for his comments, the show invited Gunn to compete on All Stars, to which she said she was only brought back as a ‘diversity hire’ and for her trans visibility. However, Gunn had an altercation with RuPaul on the show which did not go to air.“I was not having the best day that day and I was kind of looking for her to be more supportive in the moment and I just didn’t feel that from her,”“I thought I was brought on for my visibility, I guess not being acknowledged for simply being trans and now a beautiful woman, was hurtful.”RuPaul’s Drag Race is now a global franchise and is in several countries including the UK, Chile, Thailand and soon in Canada & Australia. When asked on whether she would return to the franchise, Gia Gunn said she had no interest in coming back.“I don’t think it takes a rocket scientist to say that she is sold out,” she said.“She doesn’t really care much anymore other than her pay cheque; where she’s gonna stand and what she’s gonna say and that's why the show has lost so much creativity and abundance and all these things that it lacks.”Join our Facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/lemonpodcastFollow on Instagram: http://instagram.com/lemonpodcastHosted by:Phillip Kuoch: https://www.instagram.com/sirkuoch/Tom Tan: https://www.instagram.com/tommayo/This episode was brought to you by Goldeluck's Doughnuts. But first, how is your week?[00:00:45] I think you should go for some bit embarrassed to talk about this.[00:00:53] Well, a lot of people don't know that. And Fuel has this thing where whenever it comes to events, he gets a bit blurred. I think like he does remember the location, the time. So we rocked up to I had to apply for leave at work to go to Mama Mia. And when we got to the venue, we realized about a week early.[00:01:30] And then last week, we lost two. On today’s episode we are joined by the founders of Subtle Asian Traits, Angela and Kerry Kang. This includes thriving for more diverse representation of all Asian ethnicities within the groups, and, the struggles of monitoring and approving every single post to ensure quality memes.Subtle Asian Traits: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1343933772408499/Join our Facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/lemonpodcastFollow on Instagram: http://instagram.com/lemonpodcastHosted by:Phillip Kuoch: https://www.instagram.com/sirkuoch/Tom Tan: https://www.instagram.com/tommayo/TRANSCRIBED AUDIO****PLEASE NOTE that this was automatically transcribed and it may not be accurate. “Where should the focus be for my upcoming keynote?” “How do I avoid spamming my database?” “Can I start another business in my 50s?” "Should I run an online survey?” "Can I have your podcast workflow?” These are just some of the questions you've been sending me over the past few months, and today I finally get around to answering them. Question - Rhys Donovan of the Animal Rehab Klinik Hey Timbo, I'm having a debate with my business partner about an upcoming presentation that we're doing, and we've got very different opinions on how we should structure it...so I figured I'd ask you for your opinion, because I can't think of anyone more qualified to answer it! The business I am in is animal allied healthcare/rehabilitation - just like when us humans are sore we might see a physio, chiro or massage therapist, but we provide that service for the family pet. We've scored a gig presenting to a room full of veterinarians (our main source of referrals), right after the main presentation which is on hip replacements in animals. Our goal is to get every vet in that room sending us at least one case in the next 3 months. This will be the best platform that we've had so far to get our message across, so it's important we nail it. I'm of the opinion that we should focus our presentation on how strengthening & rehabilitation can help their patients with hip problems, because that's what the Vets came there for. However, my business partner doesn't want to be pigeon-holed as just the ‘hip rehab' place because we can (and do) a lot more than that. So, he wants to talk about a range of things that we can help their patients with. I think both points are valid, I just don't know what is the better option ¯_(?)_/¯ How would a seasoned marketing guru and presenter like yourself handle this one? Kindest of regards, Rhys. I'm looking for some advice on better ways to market my small business. I launched a year ago and growth has been quite slow. I have a basic email setup regarding autoresponder as I hate spam and have trouble getting my head around spamming the few customers I have (150 contacts with about 100 purchasing within that number.) I have been sending out free products to ‘up and coming' Instagram influencers for a post and a story pointing out the positive points in our bundles. This is fantastic for exposure and IG profile views and al that BUT! Hardly any of them convert. If I got a small percentage of them converting I doubt I'd be writing to you. Stay sustainable! Im re emailing you my message I sent you on Facebook ……. I just want to let you know that I have just started listening to your podcasts whilst driving back and forth to work , You make my dreary drive worth it ! I don't know how yet , but I know you will be mentoring me in my next venture . 8 years ago I sold my business Ameras Palace Belly Dance Boutique , that is now in its 32nd year ( pretty good for a small business ) I opened it in 1987 and its still going - granted didn't make big dollars , but I created great pathways for like minded dancers around Australia - and I guarantee every Belly Dancer in Australia bought at least one product from there Im now working full time as I moved to Caves Beach NSW 18 months ago . I am itching to get back into my own business - and have come up with an idea , Cave Woman ( IN Caves Beach) I can just see this area as the Byron Bay of 20 years ago. I just know my mindset needs to change from what it was from Ameras Palace ( which I opened with nothing ) to this project that needs to make money this time ( as I have a mortgage up here ) how do I start again in my fifties with no start up funds ? Amera x Question - Sam Krief of Stay Kinetic Hey Timbo, I'm a new business owner and I have set up a small podiatry supplies business (medical supplies) I just have a couple of questions and hoping for some of your wisdom. I have gone back to the very start of your podcast And in the process of making my way through all of your episodes. First question is around my email. You have just listened to an episode where it talks about an unprofessional email. I have set mine up as staykinetic(at)outlook(dot)com And I thought that sounded reasonably professional. And I didn't want to spend extra money on securing a different email when I thought this one was ok? My second question is I don't really know where to start with marketing the launch of my business to podiatrists. I have already done a bit of a soft launch with people in my direct network, but am in the process of trying to think of ideas to reach podiatry clinic owners outside my personal network. For reference I am a young (27) Podiatrist myself. Anyway I would love any help you could give me Cheers Sam Relevant Small Business Big Marketing episodes to Sam's question: Episode 326 - How to make more money by working less with Daniel Gibbs from Posture Podiatry Episode 387 - How to create a happy business that thrives with dentist Paddi Lund Question - Would-be student Troy Heinz Hi Tim, Love what you do, just wanted to ask a question around studying marketing. Would it be wise to go off to university and waste 4-5 years of your life, when in today's world social media is producing 100's of videos around “marketing” that helps educate people? Does the qualifications really matter? Or would you suggest starting in sales then work your way into marketing as a career? Cheers, Look forward to hearing from you. Question - Roger Harrower of The Modern Butcher Hey timbo. I own a small retail butcher shop but am also pursuing other ventures. i hear a lot about market research but i don't really know much about it. where do you start to run an online survey or is there companies that sell this sort of data. any info would be great or reference to a past podcast if you have covered this before. love the show it's very helpful and more importantly motivating kind regards Roger Relevant Small Business Big Marketing episodes to Roger's question: Episode 435 - Sam Canning runs six fancy butcher's shops through Melbourne's leafy suburbs Episode 422 - A $1,500 online survey lead to a 34% increase in sales for this craft beer retailer Question - Jonathon Painting of Jono's Jerky Gday Timbo! First of all, I love the show. I've listened to other business podcasts before but nothing provides as much value as yours. Pure Marketing G.O.L.D as you say! My wife and I run a business called Jono's Jerky where we focus on creating a range of premium, full flavoured beef jerky. Currently we're getting ready to launch a new product which has the potential to totally transform our business and take it to the next level. The product I'm talking about is a flavour of jerky that no one has done before... A Cheeseburger flavour! (I actually got the idea after listening to your interview with Phillip Kuoch, episode 441) Anyway, I have been going through your back catalogue to pick up as many tips as I can to help this launch be successful. Two of the best ones I found were the interviews with Kara from the Kader Boot Co and Tom Maclean from Sofi Spritz. I'm emailing to see what other episodes you can think of that are specific to new product launches or line extensions that might be useful for me? Also I'd like to finish with a tip for your listeners that has worked wonders for me! Every time I listen to an episode of SMBM I think of other business owners in my network who might enjoy and get good value out of that particular episode. For example customers, distributors, suppliers, friends or just someone who I'd like to connect with! It's a simple thing and people really appreciate that I'm thinking about them, after all we can all get stuck in our own business bubble a lot of the time! I look forward to hearing from you! Jono. Full-time student Phillip Kuoch fell into the bakery business by accident when his father fell ill shortly after buying the business. Luckily, with 24-hours in everyday, Phillip embraced the challenge and now he's just launched a brand extension in a donut franchise … and who doesn't love a donut?! Here's the email Phillip sent me requesting to be interviewed. It was a “Yes” from me straight away (Mainly because he was a long time listener ;0): Hey Timbo! I've been a long time listener and I've applied a lot of the advice and stories from your show to my own business over the last three years and I feel like I should give back what I've learned to the SBBM community. Three years ago, I took over a bakery business and lost a lot of business due to my naiveness in taking on the challenge to operate the business without any baking experience. I met with a lot of hardships with the previous owners trying to sabotage me and with many new businesses opening nearby taking away our business. Fast forward three years now, our business is currently booming and we just opened a second store, with a third pop up store opening tomorrow at QV (come and visit!). We have been ranked as one of the best doughnut shops by several food websites, including the Herald Sun and we also made international news last year by introducing the world's first croissant-doughnut covered in real 24 karat gold. Not meaning to (humble) brag, but I started this business when I was 21 and ran the business whilst I was completing my undergraduate degree in marketing and journalism. I'd love to share my story with you and if you were interested to know more, I'd love to talk! So, in episode 441 of your favourite marketing podcast, Phillip reveals: Why he chose to take on the bakery as well as study at uni full time How he manages his way through adversity What role innovation plays in growing the business How he generates free (global) publicity Why he's decided to franchise the business How he deals with imposter syndrome And plenty more ...
