Connie Wang never intended to write a book about her mother. It felt almost too cliched – the first generation immigrant writing about her parent's sacrifice. But her mother, with her rejection of the trope that she should be a model minority, her belief that the perfect dinner is two creme brulees, and her intense devotion to the movie “Magic Mike XXL,” made her an irresistible topic for Wang. In her new memoir, “Oh My Mother!” Wang recounts her travels with her mother to Vegas, Versailles and Disney World. Winnifred Jong is the creator of the hit webseries Tokens (season 2 premiering on the Roku Channel on January 10th). Set in the world of actors cast by productions desperate to hit their diversity quotas, Season 2 of TOKENS pivots from the comedic overuse of On Call Casting, the democratic Uber-ization of diverse representation in Season 1, to a comedy about the hunger-gaming of casting and the need to stay ahead of the trend. Sammie Pang (Connie Wang), in her quest to find a meaningful role, quits On Call Casting and lands a Hollywood agent and, seemingly, the role of a lifetime. She soon realizes being on top isn't all that it's cracked up to be. Season 2 moves the idea of inclusion in front of the camera to the need for authenticity behind the camera. To listen in your preferred app, click “Listen in podcast app.” Then it should automatically populate there every week.Hey!This week I brought on my friend Connie Wang, executive editor of Refinery29, to talk about consumerism and the pathologies we develop around what we buy. Connie is a cultural commentator who has written about style for years, and I happen to love her taste, so I was curious to get her perspective this week (after my last newsletter #50 on beautiful dining chairs). We confront questions like: What's the difference between having good taste and being on trend? Is it okay to feel defined by your things? Is it possible to vote with your wallet? What does it actually mean to take care of yourself? Et cetera. Here's Connie picking up my call:I've always been a nester and feel deeply impacted by my physical surroundings (whether in the form of my home or my clothes), and I know many of you probably feel the same. This discussion isn't meant to undermine the validity of that, but rather unpack how we metabolize and express those needs in the modern world, and when they get overshadowed by other forces. Some links to things we mention:-Connie's RIP to Opening Ceremony-Connie's piece about Asian representation-adrienne maree brown on Pleasure ActivismThanks for listening!HaleyThis month a portion of subscriber proceeds will be redistributed to CAAV, an organization working to build grassroots community power across diverse poor and working class Asian immigrant and refugee communities in New York City.Give me feedback • Subscribe • Request a free subscription • Ask Dear Baby a question This is a public episode. #73: Connie Wang is the creator behind The Pharma Dental, a platform meant to help and inspire others in learning to never settle or take the easy way out and to seek a life of fulfillment, regardless if you are in the healthcare field or not. Connie initially attended pharmacy school and halfway through, she felt extremely burnt out because she realized that she was not passionate about the field and missed having a creative element to it. She has always been expressive and enjoyed art, but also knew that pursuing a career in arts alone was not the path for her and wanted to find a way to have a direct impact on patients and their health. That’s when she discovered dentistry; to create the perfect aesthetic smile, get the shades just right, work with different materials and tools to create fillings, crowns, dentures - it was  the perfect mix of both art and healthcare. Connie finished pharmacy school, despite knowing she would not pursue a path in this field because she knew it would strengthen her understanding of the whole body and it has proved valuable in her knowledge of how to holistically treat patients. She worked on her dental school applications during pharmacy school and graduated with her doctorate of pharmacy in May 2019 and then started her journey in dentistry at Tufts Dental School in July 2019. Since then, Connie has been utilizing her page The Pharma Dental to share with others about her story, as well as working as a part-time marketing intern for a floss start-up company. In 2011, Teen Vogue drew attention to harmful consequences of insensitively chosen fancy dress costumes that reduce beliefs, cultures and people to garish stereotypes. In previous episodes of Dress: Fancy, Lucy and Ben have considered the painful consequences of badly informed costume choices and in this episode they continue this dialogue, reflecting in far more depth on the widening debates about cultural appropriation and dressing up.
