Alex Andreou and Naomi Smith welcome special guest Rafael Behr to talk about the choices facing the Starmer government. Or as Raf put it "the fork on the road that everyone seems to see, but Starmer refuses to acknowledge. And - why has our right wing media landscape become so Americanised? If he is not prepared to do that now, when the atmospherics are what they are and the entire world order has been turned upside-down, maybe we have to accept he is just not going to do it.” “There is no way to explain why one would think TikTok is dangerous because the firm is close to the Chinese regime, but X is fine because it is fully owned by a rich guy that does Nazi salutes, to think one agenda dangerous but not the other, that doesn't involve some basic ‘state-bad, private-good' belief.”  “There is a profound crisis in the British Right, because the refutation of their big-picture political model has been so thorough - not just Brexit, austerity, the Truss budget, the most popular thing Sunak ever did was to pay everyone's wages - they have nowhere to go.”  CALLS TO ACTION Go here to add your voice on what our new UK/EU relationship should look like. https://www.commonsensedeal.com/ Foxglove - the UK organisation fighting for tech equality can be found here. Carmen & Bolude marks something of a first for Australian films. Here is a comedy about two close friends, Carmen (Michela Carattini) and Bolude (Bolude Watson), who both call Australia home. Carmen proudly embraces her Latin heritage, while Bolude navigates the line between Western values and her Nigerian roots. Together, they take on the world and the rampant Americanised identity politics that have caused much society to turn against itself. We meet Carmen on the subways of New York where a man uses the close proximity of a packed train to touch her. Carmen loudly and proudly advocates for herself, standing up against the patriarchal dominance of the spaces we live. When we meet Bolude, she is also working abroad in new York, a home away from home where she needs to navigate the surprise marriage proposal from her white Aussie boyfriend Tommy (Liam Grienke). That navigation means a careful consideration of how she approaches her cultural roots, and the path that she wants to follow in her life. After all, it's quite likely that her father Akin (Wale Ojo) would disapprove of the marriage. And disapprove he does, giving Bolude the ultimatum that she needs to collect 100 welcomes from Australian locals to prove to her father that she has a home away from home. What follows is a bright and delightful celebration of sisterhood, friendship, and remembering the cultural roots that tie us to our parents and our past. What makes Carmen & Bolude something of a first for Australian films is in its proudly women-led foundations, driven by voices that want to hear themselves on screen in an industry that regularly asks for more diversity on screen. We so rarely get to hear from the Nigerian diaspora on screen in Australia, so to not only see and hear their stories, but to also witness the joy of dance, is an impactful step forward for Australian cinema.Carmen & Bolude is a joyous, life affirming comedy that'll have you grinning from start to finish. Full of rich and beautiful characters that make you feel like you're spending time with family and friends. It's a genuine delight, and I'm grateful for the time and openness that both Michela and Bolude shared with me in the following interview.Carmen & Bolude is produced by Yolandi Franken and Michela Carattini, with Michela co-directing alongside Maria Isabel Delaossa. Michela and Bolude co-wrote the script together, and take co-lead duties in the film, with a supporting cast that includes David Collins, Olivia Vasquez, Wale Ojo, and many more.In the following discussion, Michela and Bolude talk about the journey to getting this story on screen, the joy of dance, and the importance of seeing and hearing your own stories on screen.Carmen & Bolude will be screening at the Hayden Orpheum on 19 March 2025, with further screenings around Australia. Talking Flutes!
The Great Flute Debate - Flutist vs Flautist. E: 323 with Jean-Paul Wright

Talking Flutes!

Is this really that important?!  To some apparently it is! Hello, flute enthusiasts! This week on Talking Flutes, we dive into a topic that has sparked much debate within the flute-playing community: should we call ourselves flautists or flutists? takes us on an engaging journey through the history, cultural context, and personal preferences that shape this ongoing discussion. The origins of the terms flautist and flutist are as varied as the music we play. The word "flute" itself comes from the Latin "flatus," meaning blowing or breath, which is central to the instrument's identity. The term "flautist" first appeared in English literature in the early 19th century, derived from the Italian "flautista." This Italian influence was significant during a period when many English-speaking musicians looked to Italy for musical inspiration. But why did we borrow an Italian term when "flutist" already existed? Some suggest that "flautist" added a sense of sophistication and prestige, reflective of the European classical tradition. Others believe it was simply a matter of style and preference. Today's use of these terms varies by region. In the United States and Canada, "flutist" is overwhelmingly preferred, likely due to the American emphasis on linguistic efficiency. Major musical institutions like the National Flute Association have standardised this term. Across the pond in the United Kingdom, "flautist" is the term of choice, aligning with the British love for tradition and European musical terms. In Australia and New Zealand, the British influence means "flautist" is more common, though American influences bring some variation. In South Africa, British English has historically dominated, making "flautist" more prevalent. Interestingly, in non-English speaking countries, the term used is often a straightforward derivation of the word "flute," with less controversy. For instance, French speakers use "flûtiste," and Germans use "Flötist," both aligning more closely with "flautist." So, why does this matter so much to people? For many musicians, the term they use is closely tied to their identity. In the classical music world, where tradition is paramount, calling oneself a "flautist" connects to the rich history of European classical music. Conversely, "flutist" feels more modern and accessible, appealing to those who find "flautist" elitist or pretentious. The debate also has professional implications. In the US, using "flautist" might be seen as unusual, while in the UK, "flutist" might come across as overly Americanised. This choice can reflect broader questions of professionalism and authority within the flute community. Ultimately, whether you call yourself a flautist, flutist, or simply a flute player, what truly matters is the music you create and the connection you make with your audience. Language evolves, and so do we as musicians. So, let's celebrate the diversity in our community and focus on what unites us: our love for the flute. Free to visit! ‘The reason I'm painting this way is that I want to be a machine, and I feel that whatever I do and do machine-like is what I want to do.'ANDY WARHOLAndy Warhol (1928 – 1987) explored the intersection between art and commerce like no other artist in history. Beginning his career as a commercial illustrator, his transition to contemporary artist was marked by the depiction of everyday products such as Campbell's Soup cans, Brillo boxes and Coca-Cola bottles.Born Andrew Warhola, the artist ‘Americanised' his name and transformed himself into a brand. He contrived a public persona that was apparently naïve to the implications of his work; ever armed with glib remarks to deflect questions from journalists. As he became active in numerous industries, ‘Andy Warhol' became a record label, a production company and a publisher. His commitment to the exploration of commercial themes persisted throughout his career as is best demonstrated by the Ads series, created towards the end of his life. Through these works, Warhol elevated advertisements, transforming them into vibrant, captivating works of art. In doing so, he blurred the line between commercial design and fine art more directly than at any point in his career.Warhol's seismic contribution to art history is that he tied his work to a collective consciousness more closely than any other artist had before. His art is a pure reflection of popular culture in his lifetime and the spirit of western capitalism.Andy Warhol, Beyond the Brand will run until 7th April. Astonishing sums are being spent in the US election, so we drill down into the figures. Sheila Krumholz, executive director of the Center for Responsive Politics, talks us through how much campaigns are spending. In Germany spending on elections is a fraction of that in the US, and with greater oversight, as Tanit Koch, managing director at news channel n-tv, explains. We hear about strict new electoral spending rules in South Africa from Dr Magnus Ohman, specialist in African political finance at the International Foundation for Electoral Systems. And following a boost in political donations for the last Australian elections we ask Danielle Wood from the Grattan Institute in Melbourne whether it is inevitable that political campaign financing around the world is going to become more Americanised. Also in the programme, UK prime minister Boris Johnson has said the country must "get ready" for no EU trade deal by the end of the year. David Herzenhorn is bureau chief for Politico in Brussels and tells us why a deal is still proving so hard to reach. Plus, the Israeli parliament has approved a US-brokered agreement between the United Arab Emirates and Israel, and earlier this week the first cargo ship to sail under its terms docked at the Israeli port of Haifa, having travelled from Dubai. We find out why relations between the sides are warming now, from Bernard Avishai, professor of political economy at Dartmouth College in the United States.

Should we view someone greeting us Ni Hao Ma as language appreciation? What makes you Pufferfish?Australian comedian Hannah Gadsby who released critically acclaimed Nanette has returned with a new Netflix special called Douglas In the show, she talks about what makes her instantly outraged, even at the mention of it. Some things that makes her blow up like a puffer fish are: paleo diets and people Americanised their languageWhat makes you pufferfish?Making a show for white AustraliaBig Brother returned for the first time in 6 years and the first 3 contestants eliminated from the show were people of colourFijian-Australian Laura was first to go, followed by ‘confident and loud’ Chinese Australian housemate Allan Liang and then Korean-Australian SooBong Hwang.People of Colour contestants are chosen to be loud and have strong personalities whilst cauasian contestants are ‘everyday joes’ Caucasian Examples: Zoe is a caring teacher and mum of 2, Ian loves nature and science, Chad is a hot tradiePoC examples: Allan is the loud Asian guy who’s in it to win it. Laura is pro-black, vegan and doesn’t care what people thinkAngela (who is Kenyan) is unapologetic with strong opinionsDo you think that producers are casting PoC for entertainment value or for relability? True or False? It doesn't matter where in the UK a singer is from or how they sound when they speak, when the song begins the regional accent usually ends. Whilst British music has more than held its own on the world stage over the last fifty years or so, you have to admit that the range and breadth of British regional accents isn’t always represented in people’s singing voices. Adele, Cheryl Cole, Jamelia, Mick Jagger, Ozzy Osbourne, all of whom have distinctly regional accents but adopt an Americanised singing style. Or do they? The Talking Machine explores the use of British accents in music.

LA 025: The Three Step Secret to Your Success

Let me start by telling you that I have found the secret to success is not a 20 step process. It's not even a ten-step journey. No, not even seven steps to success. It's three steps. Seriously. After all this time and experience I've stumbled upon the secret to success, and it is a three step process! That's it, just three. And it's not going to be a secret for long. But before you get overly excited it's not a shortcut, nor is it a silver bullet. But it is a simple three step process. Why are there No Shortcuts? As I look back on my life, I finally begin to see a pattern emerging. You see, if you looked at my CV (resume for those of you preferring American English), it's rather difficult to make sense of all the, rather odd, directions my career appears to have taken. The term "chef" is a little grand for my first real job. More chief pot washer and floor scrubber than chef exactly. If you already know me, then you almost certainly know that my first career was as a chef. Well, perhaps the term 'chef' is a little grand for my first real job that was frying eggs and bacon, peeling potatoes, washing pots and scrubbing floors. I did, later train as a commis chef, became a sous chef and became a head chef. I also did my stints behind the bar and waiting in the restaurant. You see, while I had some abilities in cooking, no one was going to allow me to run a kitchen until I understood what was happening in all parts of the kitchen, and to know my diners. I went to University to study hotel management because now I wanted more than a kitchen. I loved being front of house as well. I enjoyed running back of house too. My industrial placement, which today would be Americanised into an internship, exposed me to the delights of housekeeping and cleaning rooms after an Irish stag weekend. And many other delightful and disgusting moments. I presided over a disastrous lunch for 3500 militant unionists at their conference that, due to my lack of leadership, was served lukewarm and two hours late. Used the wrong extinguisher on a fryer fire to the amusement of everyone who did not lose their eyebrows. I even managed to spill soup on the lap of a kindly Royal personage. If you speak to anyone in the hotel business, they too can regale you with stories of exhaustion, disasters, drunkards and learning. Yes, learning. But there are those who insist that it has to be easier than this. Then I'll meet a young manager in another industry. They got themselves a degree in business, for example, and they get an Associate Director title or a Vice President title. It's an entry level position but with a fancy name and a pretty fancy salary. They expect to be in a managerial role within a year or two and want to know what they need to know to get there as fast as possible. The expensive shortcut that isn’t The MBA is regarded as an instant success secret to megabuck salaries. Another myth. Many have embarked on an MBA, and having spent a small fortune on their education, want to know why they haven’t gotten to be a senior manager yet. People are signing up for courses that promise instant results even though they've been burnt more than once already. I've fallen victim to this thinking myself on many more occasions that I like to admit. I cast an envious eye on someone else's success and think that if only I can emulate them, I too will have that instant success. Of course, it's nonsense. You know that it is nonsense. You too have found out that there are no shortcuts. Or at least, according to Maya Angelou, there are no shortcuts to any place worth going. So now, I look back and think, if only I had cut across the meandering path of my career. There are some useful diversions but many useless ones. And ultimately, had I known that I was coming this way, I could easily have cut across. The trouble is, of course, that we don’t know which direction is the real shortcut. If I had known that I would essentially end up teaching, writing and recording audio, I should really have taken a course in journalism or teaching. Or both, just to be sure. But then my Godfather did ask me some 40 years ago what I wanted to do with my life as he watched me scrub the floor of the café's kitchen. Then, I wanted the shortcut to having a clean floor without actually putting in any effort… The leadership field guide that promises to require work and effort to achieve success. Buy yours now and get started. I wrote the book When I wrote my leadership field guide: "What's Better Today?" I set out to be different from all the other leadership instant success books out there. I even wrote on the cover as a warning "There are no silver bullets; no quick and easy solutions; it will not happen overnight." It's one of the very few times I actually agree with the Iron Lady: "I do not know anyone who has got to the top without hard work. That is the recipe. It will not always get you to the top, but should get you pretty near." -- Margaret Thatcher Hurry up already, what are the three steps? The world is an impatient place I know, and you are keen to find out. The real road to success is often long and winding. You get there by putting one step in front of the other and keep on keeping on. Success starts with: deciding what you want from life and choosing that you are going to work for it every day And every day you keep on keeping on If you’re disappointed, you’re not alone. And if you’re young and hungry, the chances are pretty high that you’re going to forget this for a while and seek a much nicer answer and some other magic formula. But that's the thing, this IS the magic formula. It's no shortcut. It's no silver bullet; it's not instant. As George Bernard Shaw said: "The people who get on in this world are the people who get up and look for the circumstances they want, and, if they can’t find them, make them." Round two of the fiscal cliff saga has once again opened the old debate and the the role of the US dollar as the currency of first reserve. Leading the way are the Chinese, suggesting that a 'de Americanised world' might be more appropriate - perhaps the yuan could be used instead? This is all seems highly unlikely and no doubt once the current situation is resolved, and it will be, the status quo will be established once again. For the foreseeable future, the US dollar remains the currency to watch, and in this weeks episode find out why and how.
