Flying Across the WorldThe brotherhood of the United States Air Force is evident when listening to Dr. Daryl Smith and Walt Price interact. Clearly, they share a common bond from their many years of flying together on strategic missions that centered on national security.Their bond is even stronger because of their shared faith in Jesus Christ.Smith, now a professor at Cedarville University, remains in contact with his flying mate, Price, who works at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base and resides just east of Cedarville University. For years, they not only flew together, but they worshipped together at Patterson Park Church in Beavercreek. While their bond is tight, their paths to the Air Force were drastically different. It wasn't until Smith was 13 that he gained an interest in flying, thanks to an aunt who took this young Cincinnati Reds fan to the United States Air Force Academy. For Smith, the trip to the Academy was interesting, but his interest was to play for the Reds. Little did he know that his trip with his aunt would change the trajectory of his life.Likewise, Price wanted to be an astronaut, but he soon realized that he needed a stronger commitment to academics in school to reach that height. So, he joined the ROTC program at North Carolina State University and his path crystalized toward a career in the Air Force.

Finding Your True WorthIn today's 100th episode of the Open Your Eyes podcast, McKay focuses on the theme of finding your true worth, beginning with the inspiring story of Bruce Willis. A famous and gifted actor, Willis' success came after overcoming the challenge of childhood stuttering and finding his voice through humor, which eventually helped him discover his passion for acting. Highlighting the themes of speech development, the power of humor, the importance of self-discovery, and how these all culminated in Willis's breakthrough role in the television series Moonlighting, McKay notes that Bruce's story offers lessons that we can all learn about overcoming obstacles and finding our true calling. Our host also goes on to use the lesson of the potter and the clay to explore the molding and shaping of our lives. He draws from Scripture to emphasize that we are all works of God's hand and must learn and grow from our challenges, failures, and difficult life experiences to become who we are meant to be. The story of the Hereford cows further reinforces the theme of finding purpose in the difficult experiences of life by encouraging us to face life's storms with confidence and resilience. Ultimately, today's very special milestone episode reminds us all to recognize our worth, and to embrace and grow from our challenges in order to fulfill our potential and make a positive contribution in the world.Episode Highlights:Bruce Willis' journey to becoming a famous and successful actorThe molding and shaping of our livesGrowing from our challenges, failures, and difficult life experiences Becoming who we are meant to beOur worth and contribution to the worldThe story of the Hereford cowsEnhancing the lives of those around us and making the world a better placeGain knowledge from afflictions and trialsThe great peace to be found in understanding that our lives are being shaped for a purposeQuotes:"Perhaps there's someone, maybe you, who needs what we'll talk about, and I hope it gives you some hope.""Somehow, when he acted, he didn't stutter.""Bruce found his true worth by enrolling in drama school and working with a speech therapist.""Success doesn't come easy, but when you find your true calling, it's all worth it.""There is great peace when you believe that there is purpose in the molding and shaping of your life.""Likewise, you and I sometimes need a bit of regrinding to help us become who we're supposed to become.""And here's the thing - when we experience challenges, there are opposing forces telling us to quit, to give into discouragement, to feel insignificant.""Don't give in to discouragement. This endeavor leads to a significant paradigm shift. "Our jobs as sales, marketing, B2B executives, whatever, is to make that fiction become a reality. Park Howell is an internationally renowned speaker, consultant, coach, and author known as the world's most industrious storyteller. With 35+ years of brand creation experience, Park has grown purpose-driven brands by as much as 600% and is the founder of Business, The Business of Story, a proven platform based on his 10-step story cycle system. The Most Common Myth that Blocks Our Love

What if the love we seek is right under our noses? What if most of we've been told about our sensuality is simply not true and that pleasure is is actually the fastest and most powerful way to embody love, gratitude, peace and compassion? What if we were able to do a little myth busting and explore our pleasure through a different, sacred lens? Who would we be? What would we create? The Goddess of Love; a sacred essence that lives in all of us and was once revered, then dethroned, has not been fully anchored and expressed on this planet for thousands of years. There were times in ancient human history when Venus (just one of Her many names) reigned supreme, pleasure was sacred and life was good, or at the very least way better. (Riane Eisler's book Sacred Pleasure dives deeply into this.)Since then, we've been fed a strong narrative that pleasure is hedonistic, selfish, taboo, dangerous and among many other things. Certainly not anything a "serious spiritual person" would pursue. This creates a lot imbalance and toxicity. We've seen this play out in so many spiritual institutions, including the yoga world. Denouncing sensuality and sexuality on the one hand, sexual abuse and scandal on the other. Or, as in some Tantra schools, applying a dominator, top down/ Guru approach to sacred sexuality(not what Venus is about at all!)  and creating its own flavor of imbalance, disfunction and abuse.I feel that if we truly want to move beyond the dominator systems that have wreaked havoc on the planet for thousands of years and to co-create a new world paradigm based in love, beauty and partnership, healing and embracing our sensuality is a great place to start. We need to stop kicking pleasure to the curb and start seeing it as a legit spiritual path. We need a direct experience of it. It's an inside job.The yoga of Venus is making a come back. We've got some myth busting to do.In this episode I riff on:Prevailing myths about sensuality that abound in pleasure-negative societiesWhy we all need mindset work around pleasureHow some popular spiritual leaders miss the mark on pleasureDemonizing and bypass in the spiritual development worldThe problem with denouncing pleasure, sensuality and desireHow sacred feminine principles get dissed in most spiritual workWhy embodiment is so keyHow embodied pleasure cultivates joy, peace, pleasure and loveHow pleasure is the ultimate spiritual hackPleasure as a pathPleasure and embodied loveA simple breath practice to embody your loveWant to dive deeper?Check out the Pleasure Queen Activation Meditation here (7 minutes)Join my free breathwork membership; Shakti Core Breathwork Journeys

A Small Voice: Conversations With Photographers

Gregory Crewdson's photographs have entered the American visual lexicon, taking their place alongside the paintings of Edward Hopper and the films of Alfred Hitchcock and David Lynch as indelible evocations of a silent psychological interzone between the everyday and the uncanny. Often working with a large team, Crewdson typically plans each image with meticulous attention to detail, orchestrating light, color, and production design to conjure dreamlike scenes infused with mystery and suspense. While the small-town settings of many of Crewdson's images are broadly familiar, he is careful to avoid signifiers of identifiable sites and moments, establishing a world outside time.Born in Brooklyn, New York, Crewdson is a graduate of SUNY Purchase and the Yale University School of Art, where he is now director of graduate studies in photography. He lives and works in New York and Massachusetts. In a career spanning more than three decades, he has produced a succession of widely acclaimed bodies of work, from Natural Wonder (1992–97) to Cathedral of the Pines (2013–14). Beneath the Roses (2003–08), a series of pictures that took nearly ten years to complete—and which employed a crew of more than one hundred people—was the subject of the 2012 feature documentary Gregory Crewdson: Brief Encounters, by Ben Shapiro.Crewdson's emblematic series Twilight (1998–2002) ushers the viewer into a nocturnal arena of alienation and desire that is at once forbidding and darkly magnetic. In these lush photographs, the elements intervene unexpectedly and alarmingly into suburban domestic space. Crewdson's psychological realism is tempered in these images by their heightened theatricality, while themes of memory and imagination, the banal and the fantastic, function in concert with a narrative of pain and redemption that runs through American history and its picturing.Cathedral of the Pines, which was first exhibited at Gagosian in New York in 2016, depicts unnamed figures situated in the forests around the town of Becket, Massachusetts. In scenes that evoke nineteenth-century American and European history paintings, the works' subjects appear traumatized by mysterious events or suspended in a fugue state. Working with a small crew to maintain an intimate and immediate atmosphere, the artist also used people close to him as models. But even once we know who “plays” the protagonists, their actions remain cryptic and their relationships unclear. “There are no answers here,” states the artist, “only questions.” The 2018–19 series An Eclipse of Moths is set amid down-at-heel postindustrial locations including an abandoned factory and a disused taxi depot. They serve as backdrops for Crewdson's enigmatic dramas of decay and potential rebirth.Gregory's most recent body of work, Eveningside (2021-2022), was shot in B&W and formed the centrepiece of a retrospective trilogy of work, alongside Cathedral of the Pines and An Eclipse of Moths, in a major exhibition at Galerie D'Italia in Turin from October 2022 until January 2023. A older series called Fireflies (1996) was also included as ‘both connective tissue and counterpoint…'. A book, also entitled Eveningside, was published to accompany the show. On episode 198, Gregory discusses, among other things:The three phases of his creative processWhy he chose B&W for EveningsideHis transition from film to digitalThe abiding themes in his workHow every artist has one story to tellFalling in love with photography from day oneHis love of moviesThe significance of nudity in his workAllowing for ‘a certain kind of unexpected beauty and mystery' to come out of the processWindowsNever being quite satisfied with the resultsThe relationship between true beauty and sadnessThe act of making a picture being an act of seperation from the worldThe way in which the subjects of his work always seem disconnected and alone…And how that references the act of making the picture.ReferencedThe Night of the HunterThe Last Picture ShowMankRomaRick SandsLaurie Simmonds Gallery | Instagram“I've said many times, I feel like every artist has one story to tell and that central story is told through an artists lifetime, and when you come of age in your early twenties you're confronted with movies and artwork that you love or you hate and you're defined in a certain way as a kind of aesthetic being, and then you spend your life sort of working out those things, and trying to find yourself within that frame of influences.”

Today I want to share with you one of my favorite sensual embodiment practices: The Taoist Breast Massage. I've been practicing Breast Massage as a daily body meditation for over 10 years and it has completely transformed my physical breasts and my relationship with my breasts. It's also deepened my connection to my feminine essence and my experience of embodied love and pleasure.Breast Massage is one of the simplest and most effective ways to increase your self-love and radiance, balance your hormones, and nourish your libido naturally. It's one of the foundational practices in the Jade Egg practice and an important gateway into becoming multi-orgasmic.When you  do a regular breast massage practice you begin to self cultivate the "love hormone" Oxytocin. Which I feel is what most of us are craving. Yes, you can create your very own love chemistry! From the Taoist perspective, the breasts are considered to be our positive/Yang pole and the seat of our Love Chi for women. This is how we give our gifts to the world and where we source our love and nurturing for ourselves and others. When we are armored in the heart, energy gets stagnant in the breasts. This not only affects our physical health, but also blocks our love, joy, and creative expression.Breast massage circulates blood and lymph which is critical for breast health, but it also circulates chi or energy which keeps us vibrant, radiant and in love with ourselves and with life.A daily mindful sensual breast massage is a great way to love yourself up. It will keep your energy flowing in a healthy way and allow your sexual energy to fuel you. No more giving from an empty cup!Sounds good? I'm a big science fiction reader. I also like to watch a lot of science fiction on television. But I have little interest in writing science fiction because it's the type of genre that I like to read when I want to switch off.The best science fiction or speculative fiction books always have a big idea behind them. They have topics they want to tackle and often explain how these things may change our world for the better or worse.I love learning from speculative science fiction authors because it's great to hear how they approach big ideas and turn them into a piece of work that readers can enjoy. That's what this week's guest has done. His name is Gary Bengier, and he is the author of the award-winning speculative fiction or cross-fiction book, Unfettered Journey. I was fascinated to catch up with Gary because he had another career before he became a science fiction author. He was the CFO for eBay back in the late 1990s. Katie O'mara is the driving force behind Trail Magik, an outdoor brand whose mission is to make hiking and backpacking with toddlers efficient and more enjoyable. Once kids grow out of their backpack-style carriers, parents are forced into deciding how far their little ones can hike before needing to be picked up, but oftentimes riding in a backpack is too much trouble because all the toddler really needs is a small break from walking. That's where Trail Magik comes in.Katie and her husband developed a lightweight and simple solution to giving toddlers a break from the trail by designing an adaptable kid carrier that attaches to any normal backpack. It allows a child to be carried on the front rather than the back and can be easily stowed away when not used.As a parent with kids who have outgrown their larger carrier, I found myself looking for the solution that Trail Magik offers and after a bit of research, purchased one. I then reached out directly to Katie to see if she'd be willing to come on the show to talk about what they have going on and she kindly said she would.Katie is the best. She has a heart of gold and sincerely cares about her community. From the struggles of owning a small business to the ups and downs of being an outdoor family, we cover all of it in this episode and I came away from our conversation feeling inspired and encouraged. For those out there with young families trying to figure this whole thing out, I think this episode will be a bright spot in your day. It's conversations like this one that keep me going and I'm glad that people like Katie are out there encouraging others to be adventurous with their families. If you're interested in picking up a carrier of your own or for someone else, you can use the code BYLAND to save 10% off at www.trailmagik.com.Show NotesIntroductionsThe Trail Magik origin storyWhy the carrier works for walking toddlersEntrepreneurial lifeLearning to get outdoors with kidsPreparing for new outdoor adventuresWhat it's like putting a product into the worldThe importance of being yourselfFeeling the pressure to adventureDo what you WANT to do out thereDefining an “outdoor” familyGrowing up in the outdoorsWhy parents feel the pull to bring their kids outsideCreating an outdoor lifestyleBiggest barriers for parents and kids in the outdoorsLearning to enjoy the hiking parts of backpackingKatie's closing thoughtsHow to followup with Katie and Trail MagikLinkswww.trailmagik.comClick Here for 10% off ( or use code: BYLAND at checkout)InstagramYouTubeBy Land LinksLEARN HOW TO BACKPACK: https://courses.byland.co/learnhowtobackpackYOUTUBE: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UChSSISEgIfwYz2cc0aHQj3gJOIN A FACEBOOK GROUP: https://byland.co/facebook-groupsINSTAGRAM: https://www.instagram.com/emory_by_landLEAVE A TIP: https://byland.co/donate

So many things can prevent athletes from playing the sports that they are passionate about, but there is one thing that most athletes have faced throughout their time on the field or court: injuries. No matter how long you're out of play, it can be an emotional and difficult process when you have to watch instead of participate. The book Playing on High Ground by Ray Santiago highlights this theme and gives readers advice and Biblical intelligence that can aid in handling an ailment like an injury. That's why we invited on Ray, author, sports psychologist, and founder of Renewed Mind Performance for a conversation on how athletes can face injuries with God and use the Bible to find peace, comfort, and direction.Throughout the conversation, listen out for topics such as:“If God loves us so much, why does He allow bad things to happen like injuries?”The need for psychologists within the sports worldThe mental toughness of Jesus ChristHow athletes can remain patient when they do get injuredGo buy Playing on High Ground and other books by Ray!Check out Renewed Mind Performance and learn more about Ray!View our NEW website!Make sure to follow the show!

When we shift our mindset to view obstacles as opportunities, our whole world changes. Challenges and adversity will come our way, and while it is important to allow ourselves the time and place to feel all the feelings that come along with them, there comes a time to dust ourselves off and keep going. Dealing with loss, whether it's a loved one, a business, or a dream can be so painful, but it also comes with gifts if we choose to let it. Today's guest has experienced painful loss and depression but made a choice to commit to his personal growth and choose gratitude for this life each and every day.Mark Ferrelli had an entrepreneurial spirit all his life and knew he was destined to create great things. After the loss of his mother and grandfather in a short time, and then losing everything in his business curing COVID, he became depressed and felt hopeless. After letting himself feel all the feelings that came along with those losses, he woke up one day and chose gratitude for each day that we get to be alive and have access to food and water that so many people around the world don't experience. He felt called to create his brand “This New Day” to inspire others to realize the power of gratitude and that this life is too great to live in a victim mentality. In this episode, Mark shares his journey through entrepreneurship and his commitment to growth throughout his life. Through his insight, you will be inspired to let go of the thoughts that are not serving you and are holding you back from your potential, and instead commit to feeling grateful for all you have been given, good or bad, and use it all to reach your highest self.
