In the early days, railroads faced numerous challenges gaining access to various places along their proposed routes. This was the case in the mountains of Southwest Virginia. Gaining access to the coal fields presented major hurdles for railroad engineers. Their solution was, if they couldn't go over or around the mountain, they would go through it.
