She was only 21 years old. Joel posed the question, if parents are willing to do anything to keep their children safe, why do so many parents still drive distracted?  He has classes with kids and he will ask them to raise their hands if mom and dad drive distracted and he said typically around 70% raise their hands.  Joel is optimistic that we can get people to put their phones down and he's starting with elementary school age kids. April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month, a perfect opportunity to encourage your family, friends, and peers to end distracted driving. In reading some recent statistics, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration stated that roughly 20% of injuries occurring in car crashes involve distracted driving. The Center for Diseases Control stated that Distracted driving claims eight lives per day — approximately 3,500 -- and an additional 387,000 people were injured in motor vehicle crashes involving a distracted driver. With young people among the most likely to text and talk behind the wheel, this week on #TheDailyDrive we have three traffic safety experts who would like to tell you about EyesDrive, a national campaign with easy to share social content that educates, advocates, and builds awareness on the dangers of distracted driving. Welcome to RIMScast. Your host is Justin Smulison, Business Content Manager at RIMS, the Risk and Insurance Management Society.   This week on RIMScast, Justin is discussing Distracting Driving Awareness Month with Lisa Robinson, the Senior Program Manager of Road Strategy for the National Safety Council.   In 2020, the Annual National Distracted Driving Awareness Month was rescheduled from April to October. This year marks its 10th anniversary of spreading awareness about distracted driving and helping to make our roadways and people safer.   In this episode, Lisa Robinson discusses why distracted driving continues to be on the risk radar for several employers and debunks some of the myths associated with distracted driving. She also provides a lot of great tips and announces a related contest that listeners can participate in!   Key Takeaways: [:01] About RIMS’ Transitional Membership. [:25] About today’s episode. [:35] Current RIMS features, offerings, and events. [1:20] More about today’s episode with Lisa Robinson. [1:41] Justin welcomes Lisa Robinson to the podcast. [1:54] This year marks the 10th anniversary of The Annual National Distracted Driving Awareness Month, hosted by the National Safety Council. Lisa shares about the changes she has seen over this time. [2:51] The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported 6283 pedestrians who were killed in motor vehicle crashes in the U.S. in 2018, which is down from 2017 but has overall trended upward since 2009. How do pedestrians and bicyclists factor into the equation of solving distracted driving? [4:45] Is it true that people are more distracted or get into more accidents within a couple of miles within their own home? [5:53] There is a lot of talk about the lack of data around distracted driving from various industries. Lisa shares her thoughts and perspective. [7:36] Lisa debunks some myths around distracted driving and shares some of the risks of distracted driving beyond the phone. [8:36] How do fleets factor into this equation? [9:20] How fatigue factors into distracted driving. [10:19] About a past RIMScast episode: “Fatigue Risk Management with NSC’s Emily Whitcomb”. [11:25] Lisa shares some creative ways that employers could implement to emphasize how detrimental distracted driving can be toward an employee and the company as a whole. [15:55] How can technology be a positive influence in improving driver behavior? [17:31] Lisa elaborates on why it is that people text and drive. [18:55] How does reputation at an individual, employee, and corporate level factor in when there is a distracted driving incident that occurs on the job? [20:40] About the NSC’s Just Drive Pledge and what RIMScast listeners can do to further support the movement. [23:10] Lisa shares her parting words on how everyone can make a difference. April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month, so in this episode I talk about how this practice has become more of a threat to safety on our roadways than drunk driving, and how you can avoid being a part of the statistics. In 2002, distracted driving resulted in approximately 2,600 deaths, but that number increased by 22% in 2011 to 3,331 fatalities. Texting while driving is a leading cause of distracted driving, and the NHTSA reports that texting while driving is currently responsible for approximately 1.6 million accidents every year – about 25% of all driving accidents. So how can you keep from being a statistic? Well, I put together a dozen tips on what you can do to avoid driving distractedly.
