Sarah Moss, the celebrated author of Ghost Wall, discusses her new novel Ripeness, which oscillates between tension-filled contemporary Ireland and a heady summer in 1960s Italy. Dylan Jones discusses his new book 1975: The Year The World Forgot and debates whether this was the best year for music with chief music critic of the Daily Telegraph, Neil McCormick. After reports of an emerging deal between the UK and Greece around the status of the Elgin Marbles, we talk to Geoffrey Robertson KC, campaigner for their return, about the legal ramifications. A new statue of Stalin has appeared on the Moscow Underground at Taganskaya station. After de-Stalinisation in the 60s it seems that the Russian authorities are now reintroducing images of the former leader, showing him in a positive light and ignoring his reign of terror. Tom speaks with the BBC's man in the Russian capital, Steve Rosenberg, about what this might mean. And we finish the programme with a specially written poem from Fred D'Aguiar, Professor of English at the University of California, about the government response to the migrant deportation protests.Presenter: Tom Sutcliffe Producer: Simon Richardson

Loose Ends this week is all about finding the light. Poet, performer and broadcaster Michael Rosen is touring a one man show making sense of some of the darker moments of his life. Dylan Jones was the editor of era-defining magazines like i-D, Arena and British GQ in the 1990s and noughties. Now his memoir, These Foolish Things - tells how he left behind a difficult childhood to embrace a career that encompasses hobnobbing with celebrities from Elton John to Tracey Emin, taking phone calls from David Bowie and recommending a tailor to Gordon Brown. There's dark themes too to the Texan comedian Kemah Bob's new show Miss Fortunate which tells the story of a disastrous solo trip to Thailand. It was hailed as "chest-achingly funny" and "charismatic" by the critics and won her a Best Newcomer nomination at Edinburgh Festival Last year. The actress Barbara Flynn knows how to pick her projects, appearing in Cracker, Cranford and now the BBC's hit drama Beyond Paradise where cosy crime meets health concerns, heated relationships and family niggles. With music by the winner of Channel 4's talent show The Piano Brad Kella, who is about to tour with Take That's Gary Barlow and the folk singer and protest song writer Grace Petrie.Presented by Stuart Maconie Produced in Salford by Olive Clancy

In this week's bonus episode, Dylan Jones shares his entrepreneurial journey, which includes serving in the Air Force, a Master's degree in business analytics, a failed software business, and a brand new consumer packaged goods business that draws on his knowledge of military working dogs—most importantly that it can be a challenge to keep military dogs (and pets) hydrated. Jones came up with a solution and started selling it at farmers markets where he would simply announce, “Hey, I have Gatorade for dogs.” That drove interest and sales, but not enough to make money. And when his wife delivered their second child, Jones started thinking about maybe selling out his inventory and looking for a job. But then, at one of the last farmers markets he planned to attend, he ran into an investor. That led to a conversation, an investment, a reformulation, a rebrand as Lyx, and a product that is now rolling out with big aspirations, especially for a solopreneur. As Jones puts it, “We want to be the Kleenex or the Google or the Apple of dog hydration.”

From Persian blue salt to Murray River pink salt and every colour in between, sodium chloride has been essential for millennia. The Great Wall of China was funded by a salt tax and hunger for this mineral has led to revolutions in India and France. Salt is so versatile, it can melt ice on roads, clean wounds and repel slugs from your home. Chefs tell us to season generously with salt and our bodies also need this staple to function. But health experts say we're eating way too much of it. How do we get that balance right? In this episode, Lee Tran Lam talks to salt-maker Alice Laing, restaurateurs Dylan Jones and Tomoya Kawasaki, and health director Peter Breadon.

Dylan Jones once described the Eighties as being shaped by ‘a new type of bohemianism, one empowered by a certainty and an optimism that was only fleeting back in the sixties.' *Moreso, K.Tel records importantly reminded us that home taping was killing music. So, it's November 1981, and this young music fan is feverishly taking ownership of two cassettes in his local Woolworths. One blue, one red. One bought, one free. Together this maiden compilation purchase - from the aforementioned compilation giant K.Tel, Charthits ‘81 - as kicked off by the ever so eighties drum crash from Dave Stewart and Barbara Gaskin – was the start of a lifelong love for variously compiled pop. One that would lead to, well, NOW. Forty years later and the superlative team at NOW HQ delivered their Yearbook for 1981. 85 of the biggest, brightest and best hits (thank you Mr. Mulligan for that very nice tagline). A year that started tragically with the death of John Lennon, and ended with Susanne and Joanne from the Human League with spray foam in their mouths amidst highly flammable Christmas trees in BBC Television Centre. And inbetween, a dazzling twelve months where the decade began to take shape and form an identity that remains with us today. Pop, soul, disco, funk, rock, reggae and metal. All present and correct. But, as Thursday nights on BBC1 would testify through those iconic theme tunes of Tomorrow's World and the newly christened TOTP Yellow Pearl in July, electronica was elbowing its way through the queue at the Blitz club to make a defining mark on the sights and sounds of 1981.With the able assistance of guests Chi and Ian from ElectricityClub.co.uk, this episode revisits the NOW Yearbook 1981 (and it's stellar accompanying extra volume!). An iconic line up of music and memories awaits including Duran, Duran, Ultravox, Soft Cell, Kim Wilde, The Human League and ABBA. We explore how the year saw some seventies survivors glam up and mobilise for this new decade with assistance from the new video pioneers such as Russell Mulcahy and David Mallet. We also consider how retro never sounded so good, what made a good (and bad) medley hit, how tribal factions and cultural identity shaped our school days (and the streets across the UK), how news and popular culture were living under the ever present threat of global destruction and how pop saved us all once again.Grab some blank tapes, switch off one of the three channels on your TV and join us as we head back to a glorious year in pop, 1981.Ridicule is, as you know, nothing to be scared of. * Sweet Dreams: The Story of the New Romantics: Dylan Jones (2020) Hosted on Acast. Dylan Jones is a true titan of the world of media … someone who has helped shape the cultural landscape of the UK for the last four decades.  A lad from High Wycombe who rose to become one of the best connected and sharpest operators here and in the US … along the way editing GQ magazine 22-year years, writing or editing over 25 books and picking up a cabinet full of awards including an OBE.  He is now Editor in Chief of London's Evening Standard.  Dylan's latest book – his memoir These Foolish Things, tells the story of this successful, glamourous life in rich detail, but is also a moving, revealing story of success in spite of a number of deeply personal crises.   Dylan's childhood was blighted by physical and emotional abuse at the hands of his ex-RAF officer father – beatings that left him with a stammer and scars you don't see.  Having escaped to seek freedom and a life in London, Dylan – as a 17-year-old – was raped.  Throughout this courageous and, at times difficult, conversation, Dylan's resilience and, as he puts it, ‘very particular' approach to crisis shines through.  Links    Dylan's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/DylanJones/?hl=en-gb  CharitiesHoffman process: https://www.hoffmaninstitute.co.uk/about-the-process/Rape Crisis: https://rapecrisis.org.uk/find-a-centre/  BooksThese Foolish Things (2024): https://www.amazon.co.uk/These-Foolish-Things-Dylan-Jones/dp/1408719851  Stream/buy ‘Allies' by Some Velvet Morning: https://ampl.ink/qp6bm   Some Velvet Morning Website: www.somevelvetmorning.co.uk      Your Daily Practice: Sleep by Myndstream: https://open.spotify.com/track/5OX9XgJufFz9g63o2Dv2i5?si=b2f9397c92084682    This podcast is brought to you by Crisis What Crisis? We've known Dylan since the days he was editing i-D, Arena and GQ and he's been a regular on our podcasts talking about his books on Live Aid, the ‘80s, David Bowie and Wichita Lineman. And he's finally written his memoir, These Foolish Things, full of insights and stories about glam rock, punk, the Blitz, four decades of the magazine world and the people he interviewed and shepherded into awards shows. You'll hear the delightful clang of the odd dropped name here, along with … … Shirley MacLaine, Michael Caine and the power of fame when it was harder to achieve. … seeing Leigh Bowery in daylight.  … the real story of Kylie's “bare bum” tennis shoot. … does every good memoir involve a degree of treachery? … why Hollywood's still obsessed with print. … William Hague's 14 pints, Nick Clegg's 30 women and other self-selling GQ scoops. … Piers Morgan and Alastair Campbell (“the rottweilers”) and other interrogators who'd always come back with a cover line, usually involving a number. … how politicians make great interviews as they're used to aggression. … “not now, I'm filming!”: life in the Arena office. … i-D, the Face, nightclubs and “intoxicating” London in the early ‘80s. … magazine covers and the fine art of horse-trading. Order These Foolish Things here:https://www.amazon.co.uk/These-Foolish-Things-Dylan-Jones/dp/1408719851Find out more about how to help us keep the conversation going: https://www.patreon.com/wordinhyourear Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. A calling to tell her truth publicly became a one-woman show in tribute to women's strength and vulnerability

In the human potential world, we have a saying that is very true. “What is personal is universal.” On one hand, for good reason, you may be a private person where being vulnerable in front of people, especially on video, or anywhere publicly, can feel very uncomfortable and not acceptable. So, you keep it to yourself reserved for very close family and friends. That's respected. Then there are others like myself and my guest, Dylan Jones, where we know there is a double blessing when we are courageous enough to listen to our intuition and be publicly vulnerable with our truth. The double blessing is the receiving of support from others you hoped for and being an inspiration to others and impacting their lives through your own story of struggle to transformation. That is the gift in the challenge. For Dylan, who is an actress and transformational life coach, her decision to deliver her vulnerability was a calling for healing through her own one woman show called Siren Song currently being presented at the Hollywood Fringe Festival June 13-30 – Her specific dates for her show are June 14, 24, 28 “I have always known that acting was my thumbprint and destiny from the time I was very young. It has often felt like it chose me as it is so much a part of how I see the world,” says Dylan. Her Siren Song solo show invokes acting icons Bette Davis, Barbara Stanwyck and Greta Garbo to unwind the riddle of how to be a woman when the women you wanted to be like aren't real and the woman who raised you is disappearing before your eyes. Her mother was her touchstone most of her life. Now Dylan watches over her mother who is under careful supervision for an illness. Imagine if you could ask your childhood icons anything, what would it be? What would they want us to know that they never got to say? So with that, you will have the privilege of hearing how this work of art came to be from her own life tapestry behind the scenes of how this performance was created.

Dylan Jones, the CMO of Podium Nutrition joins us in this episode to share the story of Podium - from a small CrossFit supplement brand to an emerging lifestyle performance brand, with ambitions to become the leading nutrition brand for Olympic athletes by the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. The key? Focusing on lifestyle and entertaining content to build authenticity over traditional product marketing. Dylan talks about the importance of understanding the core "pain points" of a niche audience and creating valuable content & experiences around those points, rather than just “pushing products” like salesmen.Podium established credibility within the CrossFit community through partnerships with influencers like Matt Frazier and Buttery Bros (who also later became equity owners). We learnt that brands should focus on developing a unique personality that entertains customers, not just ‘educates' them. Furthermore, Dylan shares valuable insights on successfully transitioning from a niche market to a broader audience while cautioning against the dangers of "over-partnering." For marketers aiming to build culturally relevant brands with passionate ‘fans', this conversation is packed with practical advice and insights from Podium's journey to becoming culturally relevant.Watch the video version of this podcast on YouTube

Hello Rank Squad! We're into the festive spirit here at Ranks FC and we thought we'd do something a little bit different for a laugh today. Dean has been trawling the four corners of the internet to find some of the most interesting and potentially controversial takes that he could discover - that were still worthy of discussion. We talk about whether Evan Ferguson could truly reach levels similar to that of Erling Haaland; why some people consider Jurgen Klopp a better manager than Pep Guardiola; if footballers genuinely care less about their clubs than they did 20 years ago; whether the Champions League this season will be won once again by an underdog - and who might qualify for that tag; and if Jude Bellingham is on a course to have a better career than the likes of Kylian Mbappé; before ranking each of those takes in terms of how valid they could be. Before that, there's Things We Love, where Dean applauds the teams who have forced their way into title race conversations out of seemingly nowhere - Girona, Aston Villa, Bayer Leverkusen and OGC Nice; and Jack gets excited about a few disruptors a little further down their respective tables - Bologna in Serie A, and Athletic Club in La Liga. Finally, Dean gives us some Christmas Guru Wisdom, with his tips for the festive season; and youngest Ranks FC heir Dylan Jones sings us all out on a jolly festive tune. It's Ranks!  And remember, if you'd like more from the Rank Squad, including extra podcasts every Monday and Friday (including our weekly Postbox taking a look at the whole weekend of football) and access to our brilliant Discord community, then why not join us here on Patreon?
