Most Bible studies teach people to understand a passage. Scripture deep dives train leaders to see patterns, solve problems, and follow the way of Jesus in real life. In this episode, Chuck Wood, Dave Miller, and Mark unpack why reading large chunks of Scripture together can shift paradigms faster than another polished teaching session. You'll hear how deep dives help leaders move from passive listening to active discovery, and why the slow, messy process may be exactly what forms people who can lead.Save Your Seat for the "Lost to Leader" 45 Min Zoom Lab next month: https://www.covomultipliers.com/from-lost-to-leader.htmlFind Dave on Substack: https://substack.com/@damillertimeAnd Mark on Substack: https://substack.com/@multiplyingdisciplesAnd Chuck: https://substack.com/@chuckwoodii
Portland filmmaker Brian Lindstrom died last Friday, May 15, 2026 at age 65. He was diagnosed with the rare brain disease Progressive Supranuclear Palsy only last month. “He was a stellar husband. He was the most magnificent dad,” wrote his wife author Cheryl Strayed on Instagram Friday. “He was a man whose every word and deed was driven by kindness, compassion, and generosity. He saw the goodness in everyone. He believed that we are all sacred and redeemable.” Lindstrom was a guest on “Think Out Loud" in 2015 to talk about his film “Mothering Inside,” a program that aimed to keep families intact after mothers are sent to prison. He said the film was the third in a trilogy, after “Finding Normal” and “Alien Boy: The Life and Death of James Chasse," all centered around one thing: “Really trying to shine a light on people that we, as society, usually put an X through, and try to reveal their humanity and strength. And I feel so privileged to have been let into the program and to really see these women, not only nurture and develop bonds with their children, but really work on themselves and change. Their kind of life story in a sense, to change the way they thought of themselves and to put their experiences in a different context: one based on strength … I found that wonderful spiritual humility that comes about when someone takes a hard look at their life, admits that it's not working, and will do anything to change it.” It was Lindstrom’s wish that any donations made in his memory go to the Family Preservation Project, the organization that runs the “Mothering Inside” program. To hear a longer excerpt that includes a participant in the program who was in conversation with Lindstrom and “Think Out Loud” host Dave Miller, click the arrow below.

Stacey Abrams has published more than a dozen books over the last 25 years. Those include thrillers, romance novels, children’s books and political memoirs and manifestos. That would be a full career for most people, but Stacey Abrams seems to have more energy than most people. While she has always been a writer, she has also been a tax attorney, a Georgia state lawmaker, the minority leader of the Georgia House of Representatives and the first Black woman in U.S. history to become the gubernatorial nominee of a major political party. Abrams has launched multiple nonprofit organizations and for-profit companies, with a longstanding focus on voter registration and voter’s rights. Her new book is “Coded Justice.” She spoke with “Think Out Loud” host Dave Miller in front of an audience at the 2025 Portland Book Festival.
Dave Miller, who served as a Worship and Creative Arts Pastor at churches in Las Vegas, Central KY, and Western MI has also spent the last fifteen years on the go helping churches on a variety of topics from strategy to technology and facility redesign. He's most passionate, however, about helping young leaders take their healthiest first steps into ministry. He's an avid cyclist, Cincinnati Reds fan, and “Poppi” to Jamie & Benny.Kristin previously served on staff at churches in Denver overseeing Operations, First Impressions, and Global/Local Outreach. She's also recruited students to ministry as an Admissions Director. She's passionate about equipping young leaders to pave the way for others to meet Jesus, not unlike her own testimony of encountering Christ on a rare visit to a church with her family when she was 9.As the co-founder of LP, she keeps the big picture in mind. She's a foodie, loves to cook and entertain with friends and family, and is a fan of words but can't seem to find many who will play Scrabble with her!Dave & Kristin join Dale to discuss the long-lasting impact of developing residency programs within your ministry to raise up the next generation of leaders.Show Notes: https://95network.org/95podcast-324-summary-how-church-residency-programs-develop-next-gen-leaders-w-dave-kristin-miller-episode-324/Support the show

In this episode of the H3X Podcast, Dave Miller reflects on how an old FFA motto — “Learning to do, Doing to learn, Earning to live, Living to serve” — unexpectedly provides a framework for disciple-making and leadership development. Drawing from a recent marketplace ministry discussion, he explores the tension between training and learning, execution and essence, and how the “radical middle” bridges both worlds. Through stories of mentorship, engineering, and ministry, Dave illustrates how maturity and wisdom grow through action, reflection, and grace. Listeners will walk away with renewed clarity on how to integrate faith, work, and mission through a mindset of abundance rather than scarcity.Referenced Concepts and Tools:FFA Motto: Learning to do, Doing to learn, Earning to live, Living to serveThe “Radical Middle”: Balancing training with learning, execution with essence“Bucket and Drip” training approach — content download followed by long-term application“Practices and Principles” framework for disciple-makingMarketplace ministry tensions: mechanics vs. maturityAbundance mindset vs. scarcity mindset in leadership developmentReal-life illustrations: engineering mentorship, disciple training, and multi-city collaborationTakeaways:The harvest field is the great equalizer — practice reveals what training can't.Wisdom is earned through the doing — grace fills the gaps.Unity grows when the mission focuses outward, not on competing paradigms.

Dr. Dave Miller, DVM, PhD has a new chapter on euthanasia in zoological settings in the forthcoming second edition of Veterinary Euthanasia Techniques, edited by Kathleen A. Cooney, DVM. In the chapter he and his co-author, yours truly, try to describe the additional pressures and considerations on euthanasia in public display situations. It is no longer enough to simply be aware of the latest methods of humane euthanasia across exotic species. Given all the legal, ethical, coworker, regulatory, and public sentiment perspectives in the age of social media, it is more important than ever for zoos and aquariums to adopt a wholistic approach to quality of life assessments and end of life decision-making. British primatologist and conservationist Jane Goodall died last week at the age of 91. Goodall revolutionized our understanding of chimpanzees, our closest living relatives. She was mentored by the renowned anthropologist and paleontologist Louis Leakey, who helped fund her first trip to Tanzania in 1960 when she was 26-years-old. With no formal scientific training, she made the discovery that chimpanzees were capable of using and making tools – a skill scientists previously thought only humans were capable of doing. Goodall not only founded her own institute to promote the conservation of chimpanzees, she also embarked on a decades-long advocacy for humanitarian causes and environmental protections around the world. In 2011, “Think Out Loud” host Dave Miller interviewed Jane Goodall when she visited Oregon. We listen back to that conversation about her remarkable life and more than a half century of studying chimpanzees that has helped shape insights into our own behaviors and evolution within the animal kingdom.

On this episode of Fishing the DMV, I'm joined by Dave Miller to dive into one of the most heated conservation debates facing our waters today overspray of herbicides in our local bodies of water. We tackle a hot-button issue shaking up the fishing and conservation community: The decision to use diquat dibromide—a federally approved herbicide that's banned in the European Union—to combat the spread of subaquatic grass has sparked serious concerns. Critics warn it is creating ecological disasters, killing fish in lakes, making people sick, and even causing the deaths of pets.A recent opinion piece slammed the move as reckless and undemocratic, arguing that spraying chemicals into public waterways risks fish kills, long-term ecological damage, and public health concerns. Critics point out the decision was made quietly by federal and state agencies, without town halls, public consent, or community input, raising serious questions about accountability.Even more concerning, this is part of a pilot program that could expand to other states if considered successful—potentially setting a precedent for how invasive species are managed nationwide. Meanwhile, alternatives such as mechanical removal and less toxic treatments have largely been overlooked. In this episode of the H3X Podcast, Dave Miller and guest co-host Andy Befort sit down with Erin, a physician assistant living out a powerful co-vocational calling in Garden City, Kansas. With a heart for unreached people groups and a stethoscope in hand, Erin shares how prayer, perseverance, and practical love opened doors among her Somali neighbors. "Fair," as those who attend regularly call it, began in 1969 as a simple fundraiser for an alternative school. But over the last 56 years, it has turned into a veritable Oregon institution. Its mission is to create “experiences that nourish the spirit, explore living artfully and authentically on earth, and transform culture in magical, joyous and healthy ways.” In 2013, “Think Out Loud” went to the Oregon Country Fair and broadcast a show live from just outside the entrance gates to see how that mission was playing out. Oregon Art Beat has a new profile of the fair, which airs on OPB TV Thursday, July 10, and is now up on OPB’s YouTube channel. Our guests included fairgoers Lucy Kingsley, Geoff Silver, John Lyle and Suzi Prozanski, author of the book “Fruit of the Sixties: The Founding of the Oregon Country Fair,” as well as acoustic troubadour Brian Cutean. We also talked with Tripp Sommer, KLCC news director; Sheri Lundell, who helped plan the first fair in 1969, co-founder of the Portland Saturday Market and owner of Cafe 26; and Peter Yarrow (1938 - 2025), formerly of Peter, Paul and Mary, who performed at the 2013 fair. Production note: The 2013 live broadcast was hosted by Dave Miller, produced by Allison Frost, and engineered by Steven Kray and Jonathan Newsome. We had production help from interns Jessica Kittams, Alex Eidman, and Kathryn Boyd-Batstone.
As complexity in pharmaceutical development reaches new heights — especially with over 60% of recent FDA novel molecular entities falling outside traditional drug design rules — the need for advanced formulation and manufacturing strategies has never been greater. Precision medicine is no longer a future goal; it's a present necessity. And that's exactly where AustinPx comes in.At the forefront of this shift is AustinPx's KinetiSol technology, a powerful platform designed to make the “undevelopable” developable — transforming poorly soluble, highly potent small molecules into scalable, patient-ready therapies. Dr. Dave Miller, CSO, has spent more than 20 years in pharmaceutical R&D, helping drug developers navigate the challenges of bioavailability, permeability, and manufacturability for complex molecules.Today, we'll explore with Dave how CDMOs like AustinPx are empowering a new era of personalized treatment—while offering product protection strategies that help biopharma companies stand out in a competitive, cost-sensitive market. Oregon Governor Tina Kotek stopped by the OPB studio this week for an extended interview with Think Out Loud. She talked about her housing policy, what she views as her role in responding to the Trump administration and much more. It was a meaty conversation. Here’s governor Kotek with OPB’s Dave Miller
31 years of career experience. 2nd generation Firefighter. A Battalion Chief in the 4th Battalion on B Shift for the City Of Detroit. As a young child Dave watched how his father treated and respected all aspects of the fire service. Unfortunately due to the nature of the job Dave's father passed. But during those times he was also able to witness first hand the true side of brotherhood of the fire service. Dave knew on the inside he wanted to become a Detroit Firefighter. Dave's experience's with Detroit is truly one of a kind. One of his viewpoints is how Firefighters should get out of their own bubble and experience training outside the confines of your own organization. If you know nothing about Detroit I implore you to do your research and see what the men and women have been through and how they continue to persevere with pride day in and day out.
