After a LONG hiatus, Mystery Science Marshall is back! In our segment FORCE FRIENDS, join host Marshall Laidlaw and co-host Peter Heryla IV to analyze the first four parts of the highly anticipated new Disney+ series set in the Star Wars universe, Obi-Wan Kenobi. Marshall and Peter discuss their initial expectations for the series before diving into Obi-Wan's character journey and the deep trauma he's experiencing by being thrust back into the action and encountering Darth Vader, his greatest failure. The hosts ponder Reva's mysterious backstory and how fascinatingly different Moses Ingram's character is then most Star Wars villains. The surprise and delight of Leia's inclusion breathes a discussion on parallels between Obi-Wan and Leia's relationship--where both characters are learning from one another--to Obi-Wan's mentoring relationship with Luke in the original trilogy. Strong similarities exist between Obi-Wan's and Vader's stories also, as both characters are journeying through the lowest and darkest stages of their lives but in vastly different ways. Marshall discusses the messages of hope and the wonderful water symbolism sprinkled through the episodes. Theorizing about the final two episodes, Marshall and Peter both want to see another confrontation between Obi-Wan and Vader. Marshall speculates that we will somehow see Hayden Christianson out of the suit portraying Anakin (but Vader Anakin). Peter wants a definitive answer about Reva's past and to see a lightsaber battle between Reva and Obi-Wan. To conclude, the hosts play a humorous round of Ship-It or Rip-It with random Star Wars characters. We're so excited that you've chosen to listen to this podcast! Thanks for listening to Mystery, Science, Marshall! This week, Marshall welcomes back Peter to the podcast to discuss episode four of Marvel's newest Disney+ series "The Falcon and the Winter Soldier" in our segment Marvel Madness. And boy, what an episode was it! We begin our discussion at the end: with the shocking, bloody conclusion. In discussing John Walker's character, we explore the effect of his military past on his current actions, praise Wyatt Russel's performance, and again pose this show's central question: does the end justify the means? Peter and Marshall both appreciate how this series' political discussions reflect our real world and current politics--most notably with discourse on the protests after George Floyd's murder in Minneapolis. Is violence ever justified? Who gets to decide who lives and who died? Episode four touches on all these questions and more in amazing ways. Another question this episode raises is would you take the super soldier serum? Peter discusses the immense responsibility having the serum holds. We question whether or not Sam would ever take the serum? Does it really corrupt people? We end our discussion by checking in with Bucky's character and discussing his future. Thanks for listening to Mystery, Science, Marshall! I'm so glad you're joining us for the podcast's coverage of Marvel's Disney+ series "The Falcon and the Winter Soldier." In this episode, Marshall welcomes his best friend Rachel Hauschildt to the podcast to talk about episode three of the show entitled "Power Broker." This was a very different episode than the past two. Marshall and Rachel begin by discussing Bucky and asking the question of what does Bucky really want? They agree it was scary to see Bucky fall so easily back into the Winter Soldier persona. Both hosts were surprised at the increased level of violence utilized in this episode, appreciating how the writers are leaning into the darkness of this situation. In discussing Zemo, Marshall raves about the villain's unpredictable and mischievous nature. With looking at John Walker's story, they notice interesting parallels to Bucky's previous decisions, pondering the question of does the end justify the means? Rachel loved seeing Sharon Carter in the series, and Marshall theorizes about her true motives. Finally, the two discuss how this series explores responsibility and identity along with the looming presence of the Global Repatriation Council. After the ad break, Marshall and Rachel challenge each other to write a Haiku about a Marvel character. Thank you for listening to Mystery, Science, Marshall. Welcome back to our coverage of Marvel's new Disney + series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier on our segment Marvel Madness! This week Amelia Reinitz returns to the show talk about the jammed-packed second episode of the series. First, the two discuss some recent Marvel movie news, mainly that Black Widow's release date has shifted yet again to July 6th. Then they commence into a great conversation about the sophistication of this series' writing. Praising the showrunner Malcom Spellman, Marshall and Amelia applaud the rich relationship between Sam and Bucky and the episode's conversation about racial disparities. Both hosts are deeply suspicious of the new "Captain America" John Walker. Many theories swirl about Zemo's role in next weeks episode and the backstory of Karli and the Flag-Smashers. Other topics include the Isaiah character's role and the Snap/Blip's ramification on world economics, politics, and mental health. This week, Grace O'Brien is back on the podcast to discuss the first episode of Marvel's new Disney + series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier entitled "New World Order." While this series is very different from WandaVision and tonally more like MARVEL's other films, Grace and Marshall were both surprised and delighted at the premiere episode's lack of action, taking its time instead to dig deeper into Sam and Bucky's mindsets. They discuss common themes between Bucky and Sam, and how both heroes are struggling with discerning their new calling after Avengers: Endgame. Marshall is excited to see where the Flag-Smashers, the series' new villains, political plotline will go, and Grace is curious to learn more about the new Captain America played by Wyatt Russel. They both hope MARVEL will lean into the political discussions already sprinkled throughout episode one as the series progresses. To conclude, Grace and Marshall play a fun round of ship it or rip it, MARVEL character edition.
