For this episode we're joined by the excellent Val Mabbs, who talks to us about writing for Record Mirror in the late '60s and early '70s. We start with our guest's early life as a mod in Hertfordshire – and her memories of seeing the Who/the High Numbers in 1964/5. Val then explains how she got her foot in the door at the Mirror and recalls colleagues such as Norman Jopling, Charlie Gillett and Lon Goddard, not forgetting Peter Jones, the editor who first spotted her potential as an interviewer. Val talks us through her encounters with such legends as Jimi Hendrix, John Lennon and Marc Bolan (not to mention Status Quo, for whose double-denim "outfits" she can take indirect credit). En passant we hear clips from Chris Welch's 2005 audio interview with John Walker, surely the handsomest of the three Walker "Brothers" he first met in 1965. After Barney gives a nod to the week's free feature about Bob Dylan "going electric" at 1965's Newport Folk Festival, Val resumes her story and brings us up to the present day. We also pay tribute to the late Ozzy Osbourne and discuss the real origins of heavy metal. Finally, Mark and Jasper talk us out with remarks on newly-added library pieces about Graham Nash (1967), Lady Gaga (2012) and Billie Eilish (2019). Many thanks to special guest Val Mabbs. Pieces discussed: Jimi Hendrix: "Western Movie For Jimi" Says The Man Himself, T. Rex: Marc's science fiction film, John and Yoko: The Apple and the Grapefruit, The Walker Brothers' John Walker audio, Al Kooper: The On the Tracks Interview, How Bob Dylan And The Holy Trinity Changed Music Forever, Scene of the Crime: Bob Dylan at Newport, Elijah Wald: Dylan Goes Electric! Newport, Seeger, Dylan and the Night That Split the '60s, Black Sabbath, Ozzy Osbourne: How Black Was My Sabbath, Ozzy Osbourne: Lord of the Wings, The Hollies: The change in Graham, Lady Gaga: The most extraordinary popstar Mark Ellen has ever met and Billie Eilish at Reading Festival.

What if your search for connection took you somewhere you never meant to go—almost costing you everything? John Walker grew up building computers and exploring early internet forums, always looking for a place to fit in. As a teenager, he hacked his school network and spent hours on IRC, but loneliness crept in. Drugs became a fun exploration and a social experiment. But soon, addiction pulled him into homelessness and jail. Even at his lowest, John turned to online communities. He ran IRC bots to keep recovery chatrooms safe from trolls and built scrapers to solve tough data problems at work. These technical challenges gave him a reason to keep going, even when face-to-face life felt impossible. But the real turning point came when John stopped trying to hide his differences. Hosts Riki and Matthew welcome returning guest Jessica Plummer to dive deep into Marvel's Thunderbolts* and its bold attempt to explore mental illness within the superhero genre. The discussion examines whether the film succeeds in portraying depression authentically or falls into problematic tropes about sad white men needing rescue. The hosts debate whether the film's treatment of Bob/Sentry reinforces toxic masculinity tropes or genuinely explores community support for mental health struggles. Jessica argues that Yelena remains the true protagonist throughout, while Matthew initially worried the film prioritized Bob's emotional journey over everyone else's.How does the movie portray different types of depression across its ensemble cast? The conversation explores how each character—Yelena's open struggles, Bucky's careful masking, Alexi's self-medication—represents different manifestations of depression and coping mechanisms. The hosts examine whether the film successfully shows that depression isn't one-size-fits-all.Can superhero blockbusters meaningfully address serious mental health issues? The discussion weighs whether films with action sequences and quips can authentically explore topics like depression, or if the entertainment format undermines the message. They consider how Thunderbolts* compares to other MCU attempts at mental health representation.Does the film's "group hug" resolution feel authentic or overly simplistic? Drawing from a Polygon article by Tasha Robinson, the hosts examine whether the movie adequately addresses the shame and complexity of accepting help during mental health crises, or if it presents an unrealistic fantasy of easy healing.Other Topics CoveredThe significance of Yelena as the true protagonist versus Bob as a supporting characterHow the film's non-romantic dynamic between Yelena and Bob affects the narrativeComparison between comic book Sentry/Void and the movie adaptationThe role of community and connection in mental health recoveryVisual metaphors for depression (the hole/ladder analogy, elevator shaft scene)John Walker's portrayal of domestic depression and toxic masculinityThe impact of different casting choices on the film's themesHow Thunderbolts fits within broader MCU mental health representationThe creative team's background in depression-focused storytelling (The Bear, Beef)**************************************************************************This episode is a production of Superhero Ethics, a The Ethical Panda Podcast and part of the TruStory FM Entertainment Podcast Network. Editors - Harry Yoon, ACE and Angela M. Catanzaro, ACE THUNDERBOLTS editors Harry Yoon and Angela M. Catanzaro each gained a whole new appreciation for production crews, having spent considerable time themselves cutting on-set and as a integral part of the process. Harry reflects on his previous working relationship with director Jake Schreier on Beef and how he came on board for THUNDERBOLTS. Angela also shares her excitement about joining the MCU after working on the feature film Prey. The editors delve into the collaborative process and the importance of depicting mental health themes, and also touch on the critical balancing act of creating a film that feels both intimate and action-packed. The discussion includes the unique musical approach of involving the composers early in the production and the nuances of fine-tuning comedic timing in the edit. Directed by Jake Schreier from a screenplay by Eric Pearson and Joanna Calo, THUNDERBOLTS* is the 36th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The story follows former black widow Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh) as she carries out deadly operations for CIA director Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus). De Fontaine faces imminent impeachment for her work with O.X.E. Group, so she dispatches Yelena, John Walker, Ava Starr, and Taskmaster to a covert O.X.E. facility under the pretense of a special assignment. Once there, they find themselves ensnared in a death trap, uniting the unconventional team of antiheroes as they take on a dangerous mission that will force them to confront the darkest corners of their pasts. HARRY YOON, ACE THUNDERBOLTS* marks Harry's second stint in the MCU with the first being Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021). Immediately prior to his work on that film, Harry was being lauded for his work with director Lee Isaac Chung on the Oscar®-nominated film, Minari (2020). Harry's other work includes the films The Last Black Man in San Francisco (2019), First Man (2018) and Detroit (2017). ANGELA M. CATANZARO, ACE Angela Catanzaro is a Los Angeles-based Emmy and Eddie Award-nominated editor who works in both television and feature films. Angela is a member of The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, the Motion Picture Editors Guild, American Cinema Editors, and serves on the editing faculty at the American Film Institute. Prior to THUNDERBOLTS*, Angela worked on the film Prey (2022) and such TV shows as Suits and The Man in the High Castle.
