In this Episode we sit down with DJ's J-Funk and DJ Tempo. The Bay Area is home to some of the greatest artist in electronic music. Many have started their careers there and J-Funk is no exception. Always armed with a big smile and hearty laugh this San Jose based artist has learned to channel his good vibe mentality into infectious house music. A DJ since the mid-nineties J-Funk has paid his dues spinning everything from high-energy to hip-hop at house parties, school dances, and clubs. J-Funk has been heavily influenced by the funky grooves of seventies Disco and R&B. His extensive mobile DJ and club experience have given him a keen sense of what will get the party people moving and according to J-Funk " that's what it's all about." DJ Tempo representing Funk Lab Crew is a San Jose native that has been in the DJ scene for well over 20 plus years. Throughout his career he has also been a promoter, MC and mobile DJ. He started off DJ'ing with all of his friends that lived in the same neighborhood. He then branched off to mixing at house parties, dances, community events, bay area bars, clubs and raves. His biggest event was DJ'ing at was Metropolis in San Jose at the Santa Clara County Fairgrounds which held over 20,000 plus party goers. DJ Tempo's favorite music to spin is funky, disco, and vocal house. But over the years he has transitioned to playing all genres like hip hop, R & B, old school and freestyle which has given him more opportunities to move the crowd and get the people on the dance floor doing what he does best.In Part 2 we talk about how they created a DJ "Supercrew" which became the Funklab which started with their first event The Funklab BBQ. They talk about the dynamic of the Funklab which is a mixture of hip-hop and house music DJ's which each have their own unique style. We talk about their beginnings of throwing rave parties back in the 1990's and the funny story of how they threw a rave at a barn in the middle of nowhere and how they actually met the owners. We reminisce of how San Jose was the place to be for huge festivals such as the Cinco De Mayo festival in the 1990's where 300,000 people from all over would come to San Jose for this huge event. We also discuss how their career began taking off after starting to throw their own parties and how they began to make a name for themselves which still lives on to this day. We also talk about how the pandemic has created a huge virtual space for artists and DJ's and how the Funklab is now hosting a twitch channel. J-Funk talks about his hesitation to go virtual at first but how that changed and now they are excited to grow their twitch channel and online presence. We also discuss how their careers were always supported by their families and it became a family business and how this has always been a huge driving force in their success. J-Funk and DJ Tempo give some great advice for young DJ's out there. And we finish it off with Jho asking her world famous six powerful questions. This was a wholesome and funky episode! But over the years he has transitioned to playing all genres like hip hop, R & B, old school and freestyle which has given him more opportunities to move the crowd and get the people on the dance floor doing what he does best.In Part 1 we discuss the story of how they grew up in the same neighborhood and were childhood friends. The neighbors were such good friends they even made a gate in their fences to be able to walk right through. They talk about being the good kids who were creative and stayed home in order to avoid trouble. Growing up they were not the jocks and had to find a hobby so they turned to deejaying and music. Being the children of young parents, their families were really into music and family parties. Their parents exposed them to lots of different types of music such as 70's rock, funk, jazz and Spanish music. J-Funk tells the story of his first ever DJ'ing experience at a school dance where the DJ left and he had to step in and wing it. They started their careers DJing High Energy music because they liked the dance party scene which was huge in San Jose. They talk about being so young they couldn't go out so they were “bedroom DJ's” and as DJ Tempo puts it, the pandemic turned everyone into bedroom DJ's nowadays. They talk about never being given the opportunity to DJ in the beginning of their careers, so they had to do it on their own and create their own parties. This built the hustle in them and to this day the FUNKLAB is still going strong due to this mindset of doing to themselves and hustle for opportunities. J-Funk talks about his Dad investing in him and buying him DJ equipment but still taught him the value of money by making him pay him back. However, this investment his father made in him started their mobile DJ career. Mobile DJ'ing forced them to become diverse in the style and music they play due to diverse crowds. We also talk about where funk lab started and why it started and how it saved them from the streets. We also talk about how they select music and how it was picking out records back in the day. And how Funk Lab is now a 30 year grass roots movement with a strong following. We discuss their first huge party at the fairgrounds which was a wild and crazy experience! JUBBA WHITE, White Stone Productions - Brand New Album - YOU Jubba White & Friends “Music is a universal language, and Reggae, as a genre represents so much of what we are facing globally.” Jubba White/White Stone Productions Many artists grow their talent as young adults. Jubba White entered the world banging on kitchen pots and exercising his dynamic lungs at three years old. Born in the rural area of May Pen, Clarendon (Jamaica), Jubba learned to sing and play the drums in church, where his mother was a foundation member and sang in the choir. During high school, Jubba and his childhood friend, Rohan “Maka Lox” Gordon (guitar), joined forces with Phillip ‘Winta’ James (keys) and Veron “Koxx” Dinnall (bassie) to form a powerhouse quartet. These four talented young men quickly made an impact on the local scene. Jubba was first to enrol in the Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts (Kingston), and began studies in the Caribbean, Latin American, and Jazz music. Soon the entire band enrolled. In 1997, the band was approached to take further their career under the name Ruption Kru. This opportunity resulted in numerous tours across Europe, supporting reggae icons such as the Mighty Diamonds, The Heptones, Big Youth, and more. That same year, they performed on their first professional studio album by The Ethiopians (Tuff Gong Studios), entitled ‘Tougher than Stone.’ More tours were added. In 1998, Jubba and some bandmates became the personal support band for Bushman, and in 1999, for Junior Kelly. Both were premier rising stars at the time. Jubba and the band played an instrumental role in some of their recordings, and live shows for both artists. Both hosts reveal their top five Star Wars musical themes, leitmotifs, or moments as composed by John Williams. Through their long conversation, the two discuss the universal truths and emotions of music, character growth as indicated by leitmotif development, the importance of chorus, and John William's ability to tell grand stories with both large, bombastic statements and subtle, subdued themes. Special shout out to Frank Lehman and his Complete Catalog of the Musical Themes of Star Wars, accessed here: https://franklehman.com/starwars/. All special music used in this episode was composed by John Williams and falls under fair use. We're so excited that you've chosen to listen to this podcast! New episodes will be released each week on Friday afternoons. You can follow Marshall on social media @marshall_films on Instagram, @MarshallFilms1 on Twitter, and MarshallFilm123 on YouTube. SOAR, that's who.  Suncoast Organized Animal Relief. Stephen and Sharon manage an organization that fills the gaps.  When shelters need help with food and supplies, they can turn to SOAR for the puppy food and cleanup supplies required to keep operating. I first met Patrick Neher when I was an 18-year-old student at Northwestern University, and I've followed along with his career ever since.   Honestly, I can't believe that it has taken me this long to interview him for the podcast! After teaching at the University of Arizona for 28 years, Patrick has relocated to Bellingham, Washington.  He is immersed in composing new works... including two new double bass concertos! We dig into all kinds of things: growing up in New Mexico attending Juilliard and studying with David Walter (be ready for a funny story about this!) taking his bass on the subway and surviving blackouts in New York City meeting François Rabbath and switching rom a block technique to an open hand technique how the right hand is core to Rabbath’s approach Patrick's “natural tempo, natural forms” approach We also feature several excerpts from Patrick's wonderful solo albums.  It was a pleasure to spend some time with this active artist who has contributed so much to the double bass! Today’s episode features an interview with the great Bert Turetzky. With nearly 60 years spent championing new works for the contrabass, Bert truly is the father of modern bass playing.  Bert has recently released a memoir titled A Different View which chronicles his life spent in music.  It delves into his early years growing up in Connecticut, his dreams of becoming a jazz player, his orchestral experiences, teaching at the Hartt School and the University of California San Diego, and it covers in great detail his work as an advocate for the contrabass.   We also feature clips from a University of California Television broadcast from 2008 titled Bertram Turetzky and Friends: Music for Contrabass.  This program featured solo and chamber works, including four premieres and several pieces that have made Bert famous. The entire program is available on YouTube.  Be sure to check out the YouTube video for Bert’s wonderful descriptions of these works.   Audio used in the podcast: Seven Miscellaneous by Donald Erb Onde (World Premiere) by Salvatore Macchia Inside by Kenneth Gaburo Contrabajissimo (World Premiere) by Astor Piazzolla   Links: Bert Turetzky - video interview about A Different View (43 min) Bertram Turetzky and Friends: Music for Contrabass A Different View - memoir by Bertram Turetzky Bert’s Wikipedia page
