The wisdom and the work continues in this powerful episode of Latinas from the Block to the Boardroom, host Theresa E. Gonzales speaks with Dr. Angela Gallegos Castillo and Program Director Carlos Izaguirre from Instituto Familiar de la Raza (IFRSF). Together, they discuss the deep roots of community-based healing, cultural preservation, and collective empowerment through indigenous traditions and mental health (Wellness)  advocacy in the Mission District of San Francisco, California,  for over 46 years. Instituto Familiar de la Raza's powerful interconnected medical network with UCSF and other California Non-profits is a statement to community strength, local and state healthcare recognition and organizing for health and wellness resources to keep communities safe and healthy. You can listen to some of their wellness programs online through their YouTube Channel. Key Highlights: • The origin and mission of Instituto Familiar de la Raza – a 46-year legacy of healing. • How cultural identity and ancestry are essential to individual and collective resilience. • The Promotoras model: Building peer-led support systems grounded in community wisdom. • Advocacy for bilingual, bicultural healthcare professionals and culturally responsive services. • The importance of reclaiming ancestral healing practices alongside modern systems. This conversation reminds us that healing begins with remembering who we are and where we come from. By embracing indigenous traditions and collective strength, Instituto Familiar de la Raza offers a model for community resilience and empowerment. [School of Everything Else 2025] All the way back in 2017 I put together an absolutely EPIC musical journey through the first eight years of the MCU, from Iron Man all the way up to Doctor Strange. So much time has passed since then (cue many gifs of Matt Damon drinking from the wrong Grail) and Marvel has not followed my sound advice about allowing each hero (and maybe a villain or two) to retain a theme that reprises with every subsequent appearance. However, that does not mean there haven't been some truly excellent scores composed, which got side-lined in the clickbaity rush to pronounce Marvel as being formulaic, failing or indeed signifying the baleful death of film. Here for you now is a compendium of themes and sonic explorations as Phase 3 draws to its epic conclusion and Phases 4 and 5 wend their way from the small screen to the big and back again. I look forward to a third volume of these shows sometime in the early 2030s, when the Fantastic Four, the X-Men, Secret Wars and whatever happens with Spider-Man and whatever inevitable soft reboot brings us to a new era of superhero cinema. 1.     The Falcon and the Winter Soldier (‘Louisiana Hero' by Henry Jackman) 2.     Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (‘Dad' by Tyler Bates) 3.     Spider-Man Homecoming (Michael Giacchino) 4.     Thor: Ragnarok (‘Main Title' by Mark Mothersbourough) 5.     Black Panther (‘Wakanda', ‘Warrior Falls' and ‘Killmonger' by Ludwig Goransson) 6.     Infinity War (Alan Silvestri) 7.     Captain Marvel (‘Main Theme' and ‘All Fired Up' by Pinar Toprak) 8.     Black Widow (‘Yelena Belova' and ‘Natasha Soars' by Lorne Balfe) 9.     WandaVision (‘Opening Themes: 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s' and ‘End Cretids' by Kristen Anderson-Lopez, Robert Lopez and Christophe Beck) 10. Our 6th season opens up a deeper conversation, regarding higher education, community and resources for the next generation of workforce for our Latine Youth. Our guest is Dr. Antonia O. Franco, COO and President of DigitalNest.org. Dr. Antonia O. Franco's career spans nearly thirty years of executive and management experience in the nonprofit, philanthropic and government sectors advancing access, equity and a voice to marginalized communities. She has worked extensively on leading organizational change, creating strategic partnerships and community building, and scaling the work of programs, initiatives and organizations. She oversees the programmatic and operational initiatives that support the scaling efforts spanning the five rural communities of Watsonville, Salinas, Gilroy, Modesto and Stockton.  Dr. Antonia and I  discuss her inspiring journey into higher education, through perseverance and by highlighting the pivotal role her family, community support, and how she saw that representation matters. If you can see it, you can be it.  Growing up in an agricultural community in Arizona, Dr. Franco's story is a testament to the power of nurturing curiosity and providing opportunities for young people to envision and achieve their aspirations. Dr. Franco and I discuss the current lack of diversity in tech and educational leadership and stress the importance of motivating more of our Latine community to pursue careers in education, technology and the  STEM industries. By showcasing various career paths, organizations like Digital Nest are guiding young people toward building economic equity by fulfilling impactful careers by utilizing tech and helping them into their first career within tech organizations.  We both emphasize how important it is to pay it forward to our future generations by the change we are setting in motion through organizations, such as Digital Nest and by using this podcast platform to lift our voices. We are delighted to have Dr. Antonia O. Our special guest, Mony Ruiz Velasco- Deputy Director of Equality Illionios, and proud queer Latina, wife and mother who shares her extensive experience as a human rights advocate and attorney, emphasizing the importance of continued advocacy and visibility for LGBTQ+ communities. In this episode we reflect on her personal journey growing up in Mexico and South Texas, and her commitment to making it easier for future generations to find support and acceptance, as many young Latine LGBTQ+ youth don't feel safe or supported. The conversation underscores the importance of providing an inclusive environment, to feel safe in expressing their identities, especially for LGBTQ Latine youth and within our communities of color, who experience higher rates of verbal assault, physical violence, homelessness and suicidal thoughts compared to their peers.  We also discuss and celebrate significant legislative victories, such as the requirement for LGBTQ history to be taught in schools, showcasing the resilience and vibrancy of the LGBTQ community, such as the Stonewall riots, the ACT UP movement and learning how to find community and resources.  The significance of voting this year is not over-hyped nor should be sidelined, as over 500 anti-LGBTQ+ bills have been initiated, and some advanced into law, to ban books, advance incarceration sentencing and deny access to healthcare for LGBTQ+ youth, which significantly impacts marginalized communities of color.  With the stakes so high in this election year, the impact of state bills that aim to undermine our freedoms and civil rights will significantly create a humanitarian crisis over the next few years. We highlight the need for community unity and the role of truth in combating these challenges. We are so thankful to have truth sources, such as Mony and the representation of Equality Illinois on our podcast, to continue our needed education and resources to keep communities safe. Ph.D.  Associate Professor University of Kentucky College of Communication and Information School of Information Science will share with us her dedication to leveraging Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) for positive social change, which originated from a panel conversation from the Latina Futures Symposium created by the UCLA Chicano Studies Research Center and the UCLA Latino Policy & Politics Institute earlier this year, to bridge a conversation across our social media usage, AI for businesses and also for political misinformation.  Fatima's roots in Honduras and her role at the American embassy during the tumultuous events of 9-11 gave her a profound insight into the significance of information management. She shares with us her pivotal moments that helped reshaped her perception of technology—from an initial optimism about its universal benefits to a more critical awareness of the power dynamics and societal influences that mold its use and to holds and harnesses the access. In the heart of our conversation, Fatima shed light on digital inequity, making a vital distinction from the oft-cited digital divide. She argued that digital inequity goes beyond mere access to technology—it is deeply intertwined with broader social structures such as race, gender, immigration status, and economic conditions. Illustrating this point, she brought up inspiring cases like rural Argentine communities creating digital infrastructures through cooperatives, challenging the normative corporate grip on technological advancement. Today, we're joined by the creative and innovative founder of Nopalera,  Sandra Lilia Velazquez. Sandra takes us on a journey through a powerful narrative of embracing Chicana identity, to  her band Pistolera, to crafting beauty products with the Mexican cactus, the Nopal,  that encapsulates Mexican heritage.  The Nopal cactus isn't just a plant; it's a testament to the untapped potential within Latino communities, as we, Latinos,  know how utilize the entire Nopal: From The pads, which have medicinal purpose in being cooked, to the yummy “tunas” the reddish/purple fruit that grow from the cactus pads that you can eat!   But Sandra's mission for Nopalera is clear:  to be bold and worthy of luxury.  Together, we discuss how we can elevate Latino goods in the marketplace, much like the esteemed European luxury brands, and to ensure these products evoke the respect and value they deserve from consumers. It's about self worth, as we clearly saw in her famous SharkTank episode, and her pivotal start up journey, where the challenges of learning the operational ropes with technology and trademarks, demonstrated her resilience in entrepreneurship.  Overall, she presents a passionate appeal to all listeners to support Nopalera's mission, by showing the power of customer advocacy in shaping a brand's success-We need to ask for the products where we shop, such as Ulta and Sephora, the higher end retailers where we see other European beauty and bath products.  We belong there too.  Sandra's story is one of resilience, identity, and the bold spirit of entrepreneurship to change our narrative.  If you would like more information about Nopalera, you can visit their website at Nopalera.co and if you would like to learn more about Sandra, you can visit her website, which is full of valuable information, you can go to Sanda Lilia Velazquez.com  Highlights: (06:57 - 07:23) The Ordinary Nopal in Everyday Life (09:40 - 10:41) Community Power Dominates Brand Influence (16:48 - 18:11) Latinas in Leadership and Ownership (21:08 - 22:06) Importance of Business Licensing and Trademarks (26:19 - 26:45) Cost of Learning the Hard Way (34:57 - 36:04) Empowering Latinas in Corporate Leadership Connect with Latinas From The Block To The Boardroom Website: www.latinasb2b.com  YouTube @Latinasb2b Join newsletter: www.latinasb2b.com Facebook: @Latinasb2b.marketing  Instagram: @Latinasb2b  X.com: @LatinasB2B  Podcast Executive production by Theresa E. We now end Season Two with Bradley Whitford, whose mentor (and university theater professor) was, in fact, Alek's as well. Bradley Whitford is, of course, a three-time Emmy Award-winner actor, known for his work on THE WEST WING, TRANSPARENT, and now, as the enigmatic Commander Joseph Lawrence on THE HANDMAID'S TALE. As Brad explains, he's "now at the age when his mentors are no longer... mentoring." So we are thrilled to have with us Paul Milisch, the producing director of theater at Madison East High School, where a certain Mr. Whitford was a student years ago.  Nancy Flores, former journalist of the American Austin Statesman, founder of Cultura Media and Editor and Publisher of Austin Vida,  and I discuss how do Latinos find trusted news sources within our communites especially after Covid-19 and the election of 2020. Before the pandemic hit and the elections of 2016, local news resources began to disappear, leaving many community members vulnerable to fake information through social media and ROBO calls of false information of voting by mail,  due to a lack of local news resources, that left many rural and suburban areas  as News Deserts. However, Nancy is changing this narrative by creating trust and transparency from her community by asking the community what they want to hear and see and then by sharing through her platform of local news and cultura, Austin Vida a bilingual digital news platform. Veronica Colon Rosairio. Executive director of Fundacion de mujeres en Puerto Rico was founded by women in the Diaspora and within Puerto Rico, which promotes social justice and supports the economic security, safety, health, reproductive autonomy and general empowerment of women, girls and gender-fluid individuals in Puerto Rico. Why is this so important? The women and outer communities of PR have continuously been left on the margins, particularly women, since colonial times of the island and it has been a corporate tax free haven to exploit folks and keep them in poverty. Think Hawaii 2.0. After Hurricane Marie hit her home country of Puerto Rico, Veronica went back home to leverage her US top tier educational background, with an 11 year career within a Washington, DC think tank, to help rebuild the country through an ecosystem of non-profits creating an entrepreneurial environment to help communities see ownership and organizing women at the forefront to lead a new transformation of Puerto Rico.  Veronica and I discuss the importance of this new leadership and a socio-economic change for women to be at the forefront due to the history of Puerto Rico and the US relationships over the years. Particularly the big corporations and Pharma which has had a long history of creating clinical trials with the first birth control pills tested on Puerto Rican Women which were hugely controversial and was also known as  The Pill Trials to lead into the first testing distribution of Opioids in Puerto Rico. The history of Puerto Rican people has long been colonized by Spain and the US by creating more profits to the wealthy since the early 1900's as per this documentary we refenced call “La Operacion '' which at minute 7, is where we see the economic displacement begin of the farming communities and lower income neighborhoods, then by sterilizing women to control the populations. There is a lot to unpack in this episode, but the goal is to start discussions of our histories that are slowly being erased and how these policies of colonization, which we clearly opened our eyes to the concept through social media with Gaza and Israel, has long been a thing here in the US starting with the Indigenous populations. It's time to start healing and moving forward by learning more and advocating for those that are not resourced to live humanely.  By providing women leadership and entrepreneurial skills to help rebuild communities, creates a pathways for the right investments getting to the people that need them the most, not to those who profit from the land ownerships and corporations that feed the broken policies of Puerto Rico. It's time for us, women of color and our allies, to invest in social equity that  builds communities into better women's healthcare and a new economic sustainable society for future generations.  For context in this episode, we referenced the Madrigal sisters which is in reference to the Madrigal ten, which was a legal case of  Madrigal v. Quilligan in Los Angeles California  from the 1970's challenged  the forced sterilzation of latina women without their consent. But this is not anything new, and can not be forgotten, just as UnidosUS provides us with more information and context on forced sterization of Latinas here that is also happening in ICE detention centers.  Thank you for supporting this episode. This is the first episode of a special 4-part takeover with cast & creatives from Hulu's new musical series UP HERE. Make sure to stream the entire 21 song UP HERE soundtrack everywhere you find your music. Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Bobby Lopez are living proof that two is better than one. They have now co-created a romantic musical comedy called “UP HERE”, streaming exclusively on Hulu. The talented and award-winning duo talk about their humble beginnings and how they crossed paths, all thanks to the BMI workshop. They share the underlying themes of “Up Here”, which includes reestablishing relationships as we go through changes in life that they deeply relate with as a couple. Having the luxury of working together, they look back on their previous projects such as “Coco” “Finding Nemo” and “Frozen”, and how sometimes their work is a reflection of their experiences and what they're feeling and going through at the moment. Having never worked in television before, the two talk about what the process is like and why it's been an eye-opening experience for them. Kirsten and Bobby also recall their time working together for WandaVision and why it's the most fun they've ever had working on anything. Ultimately, the power duo's success can be attributed to two things: the desire to keep getting better and to connect with people. Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Bobby Lopez are two talented individuals who have collaborated and co-created music and lyrics for movies and television shows, including “Frozen 1” and “Frozen 2”, “Coco”, “Finding Nemo the Musical”, “Wonder Pets”, “Winnie the Pooh”, and “WandaVision”. Kristen is an Oscar, Emmy, and Grammy award-winning songwriter who helped create Broadway's first a capella musical, “In Transit” while Bobby is the world's only official double EGOT winner who helped create “Avenue Q”, “Book of Mormon” for Broadway and has written for shows like “Phineas and Ferb”, “Scrubs”, and “The Simpsons”. For their latest project, Kristen and Bobby are co-creating a romantic musical comedy called “UP HEREUp Here”, now streaming on Hulu.
