“I Want Candy” by Bow Wow Wow (f/ Alex Goldman)

In the summer of 1982, the punky, upbeat sound of Bow Wow Wow's cover of “I Want Candy” served as a perfect compliment to both the warm weather and the music revolution that was MTV. The band was fronted by the very young Annabella Lwin, whose energy, style, and mohawk made her as memorable as the song itself. It was the controversial vision of fashion designer, manager, lyricist, and provocateur Malcolm McLaren that helped propel the band to stardom, but once they achieved success, he grew bored and moved on. The band's demise soon followed, leaving a legacy of quirky music and questionable choices to discuss. This week, we're joined by accomplished podcaster Alex Goldman to do just that, and decide if we can separate the art from the child exploitation.  One Hit Thunder is brought to you by DistroKid, the ultimate partner for taking your music to the next level. In the midst of the late 2015 charts that featured the likes of Justin Bieber, The Weeknd, Adele, and Drake, you'll find Elle King, the raspy-voiced singer-songwriter whose sound was a cross between country and rock. Her Top 10 hit “Ex's & Oh's” was a critically acclaimed track that describes Elle's past relationships with needy men and how they tend to come back to haunt her. The music video flipped gender roles and satirized the objectification of women by featuring a whole host of scantily-clad men, and Elle seemed to be a strong feminist voice that would be in our lives for a long time. She even had a crossover appeal that allowed her to share the stage with anyone from Modest Mouse to Ed Sheeran. Has enough time even passed for us to be able to officially call Elle King a one hit wonder, or should we all be yelling “you can do it!” while she works on new material? Today, we're joined by podcaster and YouTuber Robert Bacon to dive into her career and see if we should be “makin' copies” of her albums for each other. They were collaborating with everyone from The B-52s to the Looney Tunes, and raising the spirits of anyone who stumbled across their music. By 2008, however, they called it quits, never to reunite EVEN after the song took on a life of its own in countless movies and TV shows over the course of the past decade. “Mercy” by Duffy

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 29, 2026 47:47

In 2008, Welsh singer-songwriter Duffy looked ready to take over the world of music. Her Motown-inspired single “Mercy” was a huge hit all over the globe (with the notable exception of the United States.) Despite its moderate chart success in the US, the song was featured in movies, TV shows, and it even earned her a Grammy. Duffy's momentum continued into her second album, and just when she seemed poised to NEVER be discussed on a podcast about one hit wonders, her career suddenly hit the brakes. Years later, she shared the harrowing story behind the reason for this, and a forthcoming documentary will shed even more light on her tragic story. Though we'll undoubtedly learn so much more about Duffy once it's released, we're diving into her life, times, and soulful music this week on the show.  One Hit Thunder is brought to you by DistroKid, the ultimate partner for taking your music to the next level. “How Do You Talk to an Angel” by The Heights (f/ Jim Logrando and Trisha Novy)

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 22, 2026 79:50

The Heights was a short-lived TV show about a diverse seven-piece band that aired on Fox in the early 90s. Each episode ended with a music video that kinda encapsulated the whole episode, and at the end of the pilot episode, a young actor named Jamie Walters sung a song so powerful that it would be the end of the road for, well, “End of the Road” from Boyz II Men's epic 13 week run at #1 on the Hot 100. “How Do You Talk to an Angel” would then become the show's theme song by the third episode, and this fictional band was topping the charts. Funny enough, the show is called The Heights, and the band lives in an undisclosed place called “The Heights”, but they never actually say that it's the band's name on the show. It's unclear if the band even had a name. It didn't matter. Despite the song's massive success, the show was canceled after 13 episodes, and we're left to wonder how many more hits the show could've spawned if Aaron Spelling hadn't given up on it. This week, we're joined by the married couple of Jim Logrando and Trisha Novy to decide if there were even MORE heights that could've been reached if this television band could've gotten that Season 2 renewal. 2015 was a blissfully oblivious moment in America, when the future hadn't yet caught up to us and all we wanted to do was dance, party, and eat dessert in the sand. It makes sense, then, that DNCE's hit “Cake By the Ocean” would become a massive success, with its funky grooves and sugary melodies. Fronted by a shoeless Joe Jonas, the song was born from a hilariously mistranslated drink order and was completely unavoidable, whether you liked it or not. This week, Joe Ferejan sits in to help decide whether DNCE brought the thunder beyond their hit, or if eating baked goods on the beach is just a relic of days long gone. In 1985, MTV was in the thick of the rock revolution. You couldn't turn on the channel without seeing guys with big hair and loud guitars playing to sexy, scantily clad women, and Y&T's “Summertime Girls” was no exception. This long-running Bay Area band was well respected in the world of hard rock and had amassed legions of fans around the globe, yet they remained somewhat under the radar in the American mainstream. Although the band wrote “Summertime Girls” as a joke, their record label insisted they record it, a decision that initially seemed like a stroke of genius when the song became their most well-known hit in the States. It wasn't long, however, before a backlash set in, and the fiercely determined band was forced back to square one. This week, we're joined by Horror Movie Night's Scott Roger to dive into the life and times of Y&T, a prolific band that may have made one huge, albeit catchy, mistake. Right in the thick of it was Of Monsters and Men, whose Top 20 single “Little Talks” became instantly recognizable from its opening horn melody alone. The Icelandic band quickly found themselves everywhere, being featured in commercials, woven into blockbuster films, and even performing in a memorable episode of Game of Thrones. Not to toot our own horn, but this is our 300th episode of One Hit Thunder, so we HAD to focus on a song about tooting your own horn. It's unclear if anyone has ever actually referred to masturbating as “tooting their own horn”, but that's not the point here. The point IS that in 1991, you could be riding in the car with your grandparents and hear “I Touch Myself”, an ode to self-pleasure from Australia's Divinyls. In their home country, the Divinyls were a long-running and successful band, but it wasn't until their collaboration with the writers of “Like a Virgin” that they crossed over to the US. Ian offers a look behind the curtain at the song's construction, including its layered instrumentation, unique pre-chorus, and the clever use of samples—most notably the shout of “Oh!” lifted from Andrew Dice Clay's stand-up album. He also recounts how a chance encounter with Rick Rubin at a New York restaurant led to Rubin casually granting sample clearance with the words, “Fax my office in the morning.” The conversation explores the emotional and musical influences that shaped the track, the challenges of creating in the analog era, and how personal experiences and playful experimentation helped fuel the song's unforgettable energy.
