Interview by Peter Jonathan Robertson in Surrey in 2006 Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
In 1970, the outdoor rock festival was a totally new idea in Ireland. Amidst press coverage of Woodstock and the Isle of Wight, focused on LSD and exagerated crowd trouble, the booking of Mungo Jerry, Thin Lizzy and others for Richmond Park would be the first Dublin experience of such a festival here. Why did this festival fail? And how, just a few short years later, had the festival become such an integral part of Irish youth culture?
It is June 1970. Ted Heath is days away from becoming British Prime Minister. Mungo Jerry are riding high at the top of the charts. And popular television personality Simon Dee's career is just about to collapse in a spectacular fashion. How ironic then that Dee should co-star in the film we're discussing this week, playing a popular television personality! Doctor In Trouble was the last of the Doctor film series, which by 1970 had fully committed to aping the Carry Ons. As well as Dee, Harry Secombe is one of the principle cast, and the star is Leslie Phillips playing Dr Tony Burke, who somehow manages to stow away on a luxury cruise liner and spends much of the voyage trying to evade the clutches of Master-At Arms-Freddie Jones! Oh, and Robert Morley's in it too. Secombe is brilliant, as you would expect, and Dee (although not given a huge amount to do) puts in a fairly creditable performance. Leslie Phillips is, well, Leslie Phillips and how did we forget to mention that the peerless Irene Handl pops up too? Joining Tyler this week is writer, director and actor John Hewer. John has been behind some tributes to and revivals of classic British comedy performers and shows, including The Bed Sitting Room, Tommy Cooper and Steptoe & Son. They talk about the history of the Doctor series, the sad decline of James Robertson-Justice, the rise and fall of Simon Dee, problematic gay stereotypes from around this period, seventies posh nosh and consider the prospect of a nude Welshman on the film set! You'll really dig it!
– ROGER EARL –Celebrating 50 years of Foghat in 2021, Roger Earl is still ferociously banging away! Born in London, England (Hampton Court & raised in Hounslow) in 1946 to a musical family where his father played piano at home and local pubs and there was always music in the house. Although he wanted to play piano, his older brother Colin Earl (keyboard player with the band Mungo Jerry of ‘In the Summertime' fame) won that right. Roger began to play drums at the age of 12, took lessons for two years, and played with local bands around London while working as a commercial artist. He had a measure of success before auditioning for and joining the British Blues band Savoy Brown at age 20, with whom he recorded 5 albums (1967-1970) and toured the U.S. extensively. In 1970, Roger and Lonesome Dave Peverett decided to leave Savoy Brown to form Foghat. They enlisted former Savoy bass player Tony Stevens and Slide guitarist Rod Price and the rest has been rock n' roll history.Moving from England to the North Shore of Long Island in 1973, the band settled around the Port Jefferson area since their manager lived there. Roger loved the area and being an avid fisherman, especially enjoyed the fishing.During the 70's Foghat had a series of hit records such as “I Just Want to Make Love to You”, “Fool for the City”, “Slow Ride”, “Stone Blue”, “Drivin' Wheel”, “Third Time Lucky” and more. They were known as the hardest working band in Rock n' Roll since they toured 10 out of 12 months during this period.FOGHAT has a new album out called SONIC MOJO! https://foghat.comhttps://foghat.com/tour

The above image is a drone-captured photograph of the scene directly outside my studio this week as Central Texas temperatures approach the quadruple digits. There's only 3 more months of these conditions to endure and since it's very likely none of us are going to make it, this seemed like a great opportunity to debut the first ever release of DOLLAR GENERAL CHRISTIAN MARCLAY (ie. Mungo Jerry's "In The Summertime", played on 3 different speeds on 3 different turntables for 100 minutes) however there seems to be an issue with the song's publisher, Essex Music (ie. they've blocked my messages). As such, I've been forced to come up with an entirely new program on the fly. As always, THANKS FOR UNDERSTANDING

In this episode, we go for a wild ride with a golden oldie that still smells factory fresh, "Brand New Cadillac" by Vince Taylor & His Playboys (1:53). Hear how this 1959 bopper is a "crossroads", deal-with-the-devil ditty, as signalled by the otherwordly opening string strumming. In 1964, The Renegades took the song to Finland, renaming it "Cadillac" and passing it off as an original - a clearcut case of grand theft auto (1:01:04) !! This model goes from 0 to 95 in seconds, flirting with near-silence before they put the pedal to the metal. In 1971, Mungo Jerry also performed a heist, making it to #1 in England (the song's birthplace) with a cool chop-shop job called "Baby Jump" - the very definition of a stomper (1:27:21). The end of our journey comes with The Clash, who put the vampy vehicle in pole position for their 1979 album, "London Calling" (2:00:57). But which tune will take the victory lap after winning the coveted Grand Prix, the Bo Diddley Award? and will the tires come off before we get there?!?!
there was a lot of discussion online yesterday yesterday about a cancelled EU tour by A.C. which to be perfectly frank, surprised me because if you cannot make a Seth Putnam hologram work out financially, I don't know what hope there is for holograms of anyone else. I do have a bit of experience in this realm having attempted to mount a hologram tour featuring Mungo Jerry's Ray Dorset in the early 2000's, but the project was thwarted when we learned Dorset was still very much alive (and touring). These are dark and confusing times to be sure, especially if someone were to mix and match key details from Seth Putnam and Ray Dorset's wikipedia biographies. I am confident no one reading this will do such a thing (thank you).

This week we meet Ray to see what he's up to and discover a pretty whacky side to him. In the segment that's all about you, a listener has asked me to find his idol, JENNIFER WARNES. She's a megastar who's been performing for more than six decades. With oscars, and a fistful of grammy awards, Jennifer has always managed to remain grounded and humble. She says that was in part due to the fact that her mother was her biggest fan and critic. Join us!

Host Grace Askew chats with the prolific, eccentric artist Muck Sticky on all things being a working artist. His story of finding strength in being an independent artist, staying true to his path - no matter how high his level of success - will truly inspire you.Born and raised in Memphis, TN, Muck Sticky comes from a long line of musicians. His great-grandparents founded one of the first gospel bluegrass quartets in 1929 known as The Wayfaring Strangers, and both of his grandfathers were well known musicians. One was Gene Lowery of The Dixie Four who often recorded at Sun Studios in Memphis, and sang backing vocals for artists like Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis and Charlie Rich.Between the ages of 16-23, Sticky was employed in many different fields including carpentry, restaurant service, bricklaying, water park lifeguard, and ice cream truck driver. In the year 2000, with the money he earned from his manual laborer job at a local convention service company, he bought an 8-track recorder and began creating his first album. In January 2001, he gave his first live performance at a “Battle of the Bands” concert in his hometown Memphis, TN. Since Sticky recorded all of his music alone, he decided to attach wigs, hats, sunglasses, and instruments to 6-foot tall floor lamps and call them his “band”. To this day he frequently brings them on stage during his shows, but the show has grown to include his mother, sister, best friends, and his fans.Sticky was featured on the MTV series $5 Cover, which centers around the careers of singers from the Memphis, TN area. The show is produced by Craig Brewer, director and writer of the 2005 movie, Hustle & Flow.[1]He has released a feature film entitled Muscadine Wine.A review described Sticky as an artist who "comes across as a backwoods midpoint between Beck and Mungo Jerry...somewhere between Slim Shady and Weird Al."[2]Watch his 2nd feature film, "Dig That, Zeebo Newton," here.Curated Spotify playlist for Muck Sticky can be listened to here.
