Looks Unfamiliar is a podcast in which writer and occasional broadcaster Tim Worthington talks to a guest about some of the things that they remember that nobody else ever seems to.Joining Tim this time is actor Donna Rees, who's cheering from the terraces at any mention of Cupid And Psyche '85 by Scritti Politti, Ripping Yarns: Golden Gordon, The Rise And Rise Of Michael Rimmer, Kevin Turvey: The Man Behind The Green Door and Gonks Go Beat. Along the way we'll be celebrating the chart-topping pop career of the window cleaners from Pigeon Street, explaining how to impress Michael Palin by mentioning the basic concept of 'trains', listening to Charlie off Casualty's scary trad-folk album and trying to scientifically determine what actually constitutes a 'gonk'...You can find more editions of Looks Unfamiliar at http://timworthington.org/. You can also find Donna on Looks Unfamiliar talking about King Of The Castle, The Monty Python Matching Tie And Handkerchief, The Innes Book of Records and Melody here.If you enjoy Looks Unfamiliar, you can help to support the show by buying us a coffee here. If you ask Green Gartside he probably knows the - boom boom - Perfect Way to make one.

Alan Tyler in conversation with David Eastaugh http://www.alantyler.com/ https://alantyler.bandcamp.com/merch/how-to-never-have-a-hit-the-confessions-of-an-unsuccessful-singer-songwriter Alan Tyler is the singer of The Rockingbirds, the chaotic, swashbuckling country-rockers who galloped haphazardly into the 90s Camden indie scene, got signed, appeared on Top Of The Pops, went head to head with Nirvana at Reading ‘92, and produced, eventually, four albums of unsurpassed Americana. From DIY/punk beginnings, in 1980 Tyler arrived at the experimentalists' haven of the London Musicians Collective and was soon playing swingy pop at Bernie Rhodes' Club Left, sharing the agitpop aspirations of Scritti Politti and other Rough Trade acts before being there at the dawn of Creation Records. At various times he's been a choirboy, a fanzine writer, a Young Socialist, a tap dancer, a polytechnic philosopher, a cycle dispatch rider, a news-monitoring video pirate, an ill-suited civil servant, and a Deptford Creek dwelling river poet. Long after his Heavenly Recordings heyday, Tyler remains a stalwart of London's roots music scene: a critically recognised singer-songwriter who has never had a single hit.
Dotun and Tim are joined by Djibril Diop and callers want to talk about Guardiola's influence on modern football, Nottingham Forest's lofty league position, playing Sunday league football, inconsistent refereeing and whether Josh Windass will move to Brazilian club Santos. There's also time for Scritti Politti's song Oh Patti (Don't Feel Sorry for Loverboy) featuring Miles Davis and related jazz discussion!

Whether you know it or not, you've been listening to Fonzi Thornton for almost 50 years. As teenagers he and Luther Vandross formed a lifelong friendship and devoting their lives to music pays off for both - Luther becomes a giant among giants and Fonzi becomes one of the most sought after backup singers ever. Starting in Listen My Brother with Luther and friends Carlos Alomar and Robin Clark turns into a stint singing with Chic and then a lifelong partnership with Roxy Music and Bryan Ferry. Along the way there's been Bowie, Aretha, Scritti Politti, Candi Staton and tons more. Don't forget to watch him in the excellent new documentary Luther: Never Too Much that will be premiering on CNN on New Year's Day. Enjoy! www.luther.film www.patreon.com/c/thehustlepod

SPORT I SEJRSTIMEN? Lyt efter, til: A Flock Of Seagulls, AwolNation, Susan Bear, The Cabin Project, Carpark North, Chase Atlantic, Crash Test Dummies, Frankie Goes To Hollywood, Linkin Park, The Nits, Frank Ocean, Perfect Zebras, Pet Shop Boys, Queen, Rihanna, Scritti Politti, Vampire Weekend og Woodkid.
Episode 247: Multiple tidbits this week, including the lineup for the 2025 80's Cruise, and a tribute to Eric Carmen. You Don't Have to Yell! Did you ever notice that multiple 80's song titles include exclamation points in them? What's the deal with that?? Joe and Kari take a look at some songs from Scritti Politti, Donnie Iris, Thompson Twins, and others that beg the listener to SCREAM the song title in excitement. But did these songs EARN the right to use those exclamation points? That's what's up for debate in this episode!Could've Been: In this segment, Joe and Kari each swap out a song from the top 20 for a song in the bottom 20. Stray Cats and Styx take a hike to make room for a southern rock band and a surprisingly Yacht Rock singer.
How do art schools influence music? In No Machos or Pop Stars: When the Leeds Art Experiment Went Punk (Duke UP, 2022), Gavin Butt, a Professor of Fine Art at Northumbria University, Newcastle, tells the story of art, music and higher education in Leeds in the mid-1970s. Using archives and interviews, as well as analysis of the music and art of the era, the book shows the importance of art and art theory to a huge range of bands, including Gang of Four, Scritti Politti and Soft Cell. The analysis also takes a critical perspective on art, music and the era, thinking through the importance of class, gender, and racial inequalities to punk and post-punk. A rich and detailed defence of the importance of arts education, the book will be of interest across the arts and humanities, as well as for anyone wanting to know more about why Leeds matters! Festivus for the rest of us! The boys were in festive form the week before Christmas. Along with the usual football/futbol/soccer/sahhkerrr talk, there were rare mentions of Bruce Hornsby, Jim Reeves, Beyonce, and Scritti Politti. Yep, Scritti Politti. Look 'em up.
Hello and best wishes for the festive season. My gift to you is a brand new episode of the ‘Art on your sleeve' podcast. In this episode I speak with Paula Benson and Paul West from Form. There's a lot that I could say about this dynamic duo and their extraordinarily diverse pop portfolio, but it's probably easier to let them speak for themselves. So, here's a bit of an introduction lifted directly from their website. In the early 1990's founding partners Paul West and Paula Benson opened the London doors of graphic design and branding studio Form with two core philosophies: to create work we are proud of and to build real value for our clients through our thinking and particular approach to bold and recognisable design. With a background in music, within a few years we had worked with most of the major and indie record companies within the UK. We evolved by taking our passion to a wider range of clients in other sectors whilst winning awards for our creativity and gaining international respect along the way. Three decades later we remain just as enthusiastic about outstanding design and engaging communications – and the power they have to transform our clients' products and services. We are problem solvers and ensure our work connects with the target audience by understanding our client's goals and needs in an ever-changing market place. I spent a fantastic afternoon with Paula and Paul at at their studio, digging through an archive of incredible creativity. We reminisced about the many great artists that they have worked with over the last 30+ years, including Cocteau Twins, East 17, Deuce, 2wo Third3, Everything but the Girl, Scritti Politti, Natalie Imbruglia, Girls Aloud, Depeche Mode and Bright Light Bright Light, and many more. The podcast was recorded whilst quite literally sitting within their personal pop archive, so, at times, things get a bit crinkly and crunchy as we dig out way through parcels and packages filled with decades of delightful design. Hopefully, it doesn't spoil things for you, just try to imagine yourself within the space and go with it! Already a legend when I was booking rock clubs in New York back in the days, I was in a daze and don't think we ever spoke, but I was always aware whenever he was around by the admiring ruckus surrounding him. There were a number of near misses through the years, finally meeting him at one of Steve Postell's gigs some years ago, and then at Will Lee's a few years later. I pounced, as is my wont. We had a great time on here in 2019- and broken Thanksgiving bread of late, and so look forward to sitting down again with this man who has sat behind innumerable rock heroes, and, is one hisself. When British band Scritti Politti originally got together at Leeds Polytechnic in 1977, they were a punk-inspired collective of art students and squatters with a penchant towards Marxism. In the early 1980s leader Green Gartside scrapped all that and pivoted the band to a pop/soul sound that paid homage to American artists Michael Jackson and Aretha Franklin among others. If I look back at my life it's been relatively straight forward. There was a bit of a course correction after I graduated with an engineering masters and moved into personal training, but from there on it's more or less been a series of variations on the theme of wellbeing. I'm always fascinated by people who have lived a more unconventional life and finding out what makes them tick and I was delighted to be joined on the podcast by the ex-Scritti Politti drummer, Rockstar Activator Tom Morley. I met Tom at an event a few years ago and am a big fan of his work. His stories reel you in and give you snippets of a life spent crossing paths with the likes of Jamie Wheal, and we talk in this episode about creativity, tribes and story telling rhythm, identity and human connection, and how it all relates to our wellbeing and sense of place. I asked him to send me a bio to make sure that I got everything right and he replied with this: “Tom Morley has just sent me this. He says, "I don't want people to follow me, or pass my details on to anyone, or think of me in any way that's business related. My whole way of being is serenading serendipity, chanting to chance and drumming up a storm for social justice. All else is confetti in the wind. I've talked with the social media gurus and I wish them well. During the pandemic the world moved to a different paradigm. You either feel it or you don't. I'm not out to teach anyone anything. I'm just saying, "OK, here we are on this day. Let's see what we can do together. Given the skills we have and the time we've got let's create something. That's it." This is what we created last Thursday, I hope it gives you a bit of a boost! You can follow Tom on social media and his website: https://tommorley.com https://www.linkedin.com/in/tommorleyrockstar
