Another week, another round of College Football chaos, and Notre Dame is at the center of all of it. We dig into why the Irish bailed on bowl season, why the committee bent over backwards for Alabama and the ACC, and how James Madison crashing the party might actually fix the Playoff moving forward. Marcus Freeman gets the MTV Cribs treatment, Duke gets blamed for basically everything, and we take a hard look at what happens if Notre Dame finally snaps and walks away from the ACC. Plus: Oregon losing its shine, one of the wildest postgame interviews of the year, LeBron conspiracy theories, Xavier sweeping the Crosstown Shootout, MLB insanity with the Dodgers, Reds missing on Schwarber, and the growing Saudi shadow over baseball. We even close with private equity invading Utah athletics, the AP Poll telling on itself, and a FIFA “Peace Prize” that looks like it was handed out in homeroom. The Morning Shift dug into some of the Heisman finalists that were just announced on Monday night and teased some discussion of the CFP matchup between Alabama and Oklahoma.
Did the CFP committee get the playoff bracket right? Well, that depends on your perspective and your rooting interests. The bubble became awfully crowded, so not everyone was going to come away happy. Overall, Alabama and Miami seem like fair choices, but the course the committee charted to reach that destination became an exercise of the absurd. On today’s episode, hosts Blake Toppmeyer and John Adams offer their biggest grievances with this bracket – and with this committee – and propose a different way to approach the playoff. Is this season cause for playoff expansion? Not necessarily. There’s an argument for 16 teams, but there’s also a case for staying at 12 and dumping automatic bids in favor of a bracket filled exclusively through at-large bids. Let’s reconsider who gets to be on the CFP committee. Also in this episode, the hosts discuss potential playoff upsets, and they predict the national champion.

Mike and Steve interviewed Southeastern head football coach Frank Scelfo. Coach Scelfo discussed the Lions' upcoming appearance in the FCS Playoffs after winning the annual River Bell Classic against Nicholls State. Scelfo shared his thoughts on star defensive lineman Kaleb Proctor, the Lions' senior class, and Southeastern's special roster. He also criticized the NCAA's lack of leadership and previewed the Lions' playoff matchup against Illinois State. Mike, Charlie, and Steve played their weekly "Pick-Six" segment.
The CMAs tried to be everything at once: a celebration of country's roots, a launchpad for rising acts, and a glossy TV moment with crossover appeal. We sat down after watching every minute (twice) and cut through the noise with a blunt, song-first breakdown of what actually worked, what didn't, and why the fans' reality isn't showing up on stage. We start with Lainey Wilson's capable hosting and a performance that sparked debate about image and song fit. Then we zero in on the music: Chris Stapleton's band-first power, Zach Top's classic-country momentum, Red Clay Strays' raw charisma, and Stephen Wilson Jr.'s singular style. Kenny Chesney's thoughtful tribute to Brett James reminded us what sincerity looks like on a big stage, while a disco-styled duet left us wondering how a concept can eclipse the song. We also grapple with the Vince Gill tribute choice—how to honor an icon with the right voices and the right feel. The conversation keeps coming back to scale and stakes. If Entertainer of the Year is about ticket sales, streaming impact, and cultural reach, fans know who they're crowning. We talk candidly about the Morgan Wallen-sized gap between stadium reality and awards-night narrative, why certain categories feel hollow, and how the business can champion bands and vocal groups without blurring what those categories mean. Along the way, we call out who likely played live, where production helped or hurt, and which artists have “a thing” that cuts through. If you want a no-spin tour through the night's highs, lows, and head-scratchers—plus a grounded take on where country music is actually headed—this episode is your companion piece to the broadcast. Hit play, then tell us what we got right, where we're nuts, and who your real Entertainer of the Year is. If you're into honest country talk, subscribe, share with a friend, and leave a review so more fans can find the show. The Try That in a Small Town Podcast is powered by e|spaces!
