One of the greatest sophomore records in the past few decades of music was delivered to us in 2006 by a promising young singer-songwriter, Amy Jade Winehouse. Along with her co-pilots Salaam Remi and Mark Ronson, Amy took a departure from the sound of her debut album and went in a completely new direction...into the doo-wop, girl group sound of the 60s. This decision would prove to be one of the best moves of her career, a move that set the stage for her to create her master work. On January 10th, 2024 The Record Club kicked off the new year with our eleventh session, where we covered the incredible "Back to Black" by Amy Winehouse. This episode goes inside that night.

B. Cox reviews Nas' sixth studio album God's Son as it turns 20. Capping off a productive year, the Queens emcee released his third project in 12 months following up the classic album Stillmatic and the compilation of unreleased tracks The Lost Tapes. It was seen as a continuation of his "comeback". He dealt with problems and distractions during the recording of the album, including his continued beef with Jay-Z and the death of his mother earlier in the year due to cancer. Despite the setbacks, he released an album that was largely critically acclaimed with production from the likes of Salaam Remi, Alchemist, Ron Brows, Chucky Thompson, Agile, Eminem and Alicia Keys. The album featured three singles: the street anthem "Made You Look", the children inspired "I Can" and "Get Down". It was certified platinum and is often cited as Nas' most personal and candid album.Visit The Vault Classic Music Reviews Onlinewww.vaultclassicpod.comSupport The Vault Classic Music Review on Buy Me A Coffeehttps://www.buymeacoffee.com/vaultclassicpodShow NotesAlbumism: Nas' God's Son turns 20 | Album Anniversaryhttps://albumism.com/features/nas-gods-son-album-anniversaryBBC: 16 Albums That Define 2002 https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/articles/3ClfdFXPBSnc7s4cMBrjl4G/16-albums-that-define-2002FocusOnHipHop: Album Review | Nas - God's Son https://focushiphop.com/2016/06/26/album-review-nas-gods-son/ Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/the-vault-classic-music-reviews-podcast/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Musician and Writer Sasha Frere-Jones joins DJ Louie to discuss the tragically short career and life of the great British soul singer, Amy Winehouse. Louie and Sasha begin by discussing how an early death, perhaps before a pop star has even reached their peak, affects their legacy before diving into Amy's story, how she grew up on the music of jazz greats like Dinah Washington and Sarah Vaughn and ‘90s American hip hop superstars like Nas and Lauryn Hill and the ways that marriage formed the aesthetic of her debut album, 2003's Frank. They then discuss how a painful breakup led Amy both down a dangerous path with drugs and alcohol but also inspired her breakthrough sophomore album, 2006's modern classic Back to Black, a meticulously constructed throwback to ‘50s and ‘60s soul and girl group aesthetics made in collaboration with producers Mark Ronson and Salaam Remi. Louie and Sasha lay out the ways in which that album juxtaposed backwards-looking production with Amy's utterly singular and thoroughly-modern perspective on love, heartbreak and substance abuse, how Black's massive and expected success only exacerbated her problems, the toxicity of celebrity press coverage in the late 2000s, and how it all ultimately helped lead to Amy's untimely passing from alcohol poisoning in 2011. Lastly, Louie and Sasha discuss the long shadow of Amy Winehouse's legacy in pop culture, before ranking her in the official Pop Pantheon.

Amy Winehouse made music that sounded like alchemy, thanks in large part to collaborators like producer Salaam Remi. Alchemy was something that became increasingly absent from Amy's time outside the studio; in its place were lurking paparazzi, incessant boos, cases of Jack Daniels, and a life-sized gallery sculpture that predicted the worst. Alessia Cara uses pop music as a diary. Over the last five years, she has matured alongside her audience, first capturing the highs and lows of adolescence with camera-like clarity, and then documenting her first, tentative steps into adulthood on deeply resonant songs like “Trust My Lonely” and “Out Of Love.” Now, she looks inward—again—on album number three. In the Meantime reflects on a period of intense self-doubt and traces the Grammy winner's slow journey back to happiness. “There's a sense of duality to this entire project, that's the common thread,” Cara reveals. “It's introspection and despair, followed by the first inkling of hope.” The 24-year-old teases both ends of that spectrum on the album's first two singles. “Shape Shifter,” a feisty, mid-tempo bop, represents the dark, while the instantly catchy “Sweet Dream” symbolizes the light. The former was recorded in producer Salaam Remi's home studio—a holy place of sorts for Cara. “I was super nervous because that was where Amy Winehouse wrote all her music,” she says, still in awe. “I remember thinking, ‘Amy if you're out there, please don't let me look dumb!” A sweeping kiss-off that oozes attitude and swagger, “Shape Shifter” has all the elements of a summer smash. “I felt a little mistreated by somebody and a little wronged,” Cara admits. “I was in a period of my life where I was just mad at the world.” She channeled those feelings into a fictional narrative about a cheating husband. “The song would be the wife's response,” she explains. “It ended up just coming out of me. I don't know if it was the universe or maybe Amy really had my back.” “Sweet Dream” is similarly multi-layered. The song explores pandemic-induced anxiety and insomnia, not that you would know it from frequent collaborator Jon Levine's bright, breezy production. “I like writing darker lyrics over the top of a lighter instrumental. I've always enjoyed that juxtaposition,” Cara says. The result is one of 2021's most deceptively hard-hitting earworms and another reminder that nobody does relatable pop quite like the “Here” hitmaker. Speaking of that ubiquitous loner anthem, Cara's early success informs her new music—at least indirectly. “I think being thrust into the music world at 18, I never really had the chance to process my emotions,” she says. “Now that I've had a year of stillness [due to the Covid-19 pandemic], I realize how special and insane that time in my life was.” That's putting it mildly. Cara exploded onto the music scene in 2015 when “Here” became the unofficial theme song for millennials. It went nuclear on streaming services and then crossed over to pop radio, eventually peaking at No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 and selling three million copies. Her platinum-selling debut album, Know-It-All, delivered another smash hit with “Scars to Your Beautiful” and she memorably contributed “How Far I'll Go” to the Moana soundtrack. Cara then added further platinum plaques to her collection with “Stay,” a dizzying club collaboration with Zedd, and an unforgettable feature on Logic's “1-800-273-8255.” The Brampton, Ontario native resurfaced in 2018 with The Pains Of Growing, which won a Juno Award for Best Album and cemented Cara as one of the foremost singer/songwriters of her generation. It seems like the magnitude of those achievements is only just sinking in. “The fact that I'm three albums in is crazy,” she muses. “It has been such a wild experience. I don't know if I'll ever fully grasp it.” The experimental, deeply personal approach of “Shape Shifter” and “Sweet Dream” is reflective of the rest of In the Meantime, too. Take “Better Days,” a soaring ballad that details Cara's rock bottom. “I had a little get together on New Year's Eve 2020,” she remembers. “I felt this profound, deep sadness and sense of hopelessness. I went to my bathroom and started crying. I felt like there were no good days ahead.” Ultimately, it was a turning point. “It's when I really started working on myself and was able to get out of that gloomy space.” A lyric from the song inspired the album's title. “So it goes, you live and then you die,” Cara belts on the heartstrings-tugging anthem. “The hardest pill to swallow is the meantime.” But if “Better Days” is a glimpse of the multi-platinum artist at her lowest, “Apartment Song” represents the flip side. Produced by Joel Little, the album closer is about practicing gratitude. “I was finding living alone a little bit challenging,” she says. “Then, one day, I just looked around my place. I just had this moment of sheer happiness, finding joy in being and living alone.” In addition to Joel Little, Saalam Remi, and Jon Levine, other producers that helped craft the dense, multi-layered soundscape of In the Meantime include Greg Kurstin and J Kash along with Canadian heavyweights Mike Wise, Billboard, Doc McKinney, Banx & Ranx, and Boi-1da. In many ways, the album is a snapshot of an artist finally processing the seismic shift of becoming a household name in a remarkably short period of time. Working with this vast cast of collaborators, Cara was able to dig deep, like she always has. But this time, she's doing so with a goal that sounds simultaneously modest and herculean: “I want to make music that outlives me—that's universal enough to hit a chord with people and endure.”

An artist who's breakthrough album landed her a grammy and a world tour, alongside U2. An artist who's worked with Timbaland, Salaam Remi and Pharrell Williams, and who writes 99% of her own songs. With huge accolades to her name, the thing I wanted to understand by looking at Nelly Furtado, is how she's morphed and transformed so much throughout her career. With an unconventional sound and a consistent gravitational pull towards worldly sounds which are quite hard to really describe Nelly surprised many with the scale of her success. Now 15years after the release of I'm like a bird… this is a lesson in an artists evolution. By Nelly Furtado. Lex Handles:@lexonthedecks See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Remember the remix? Remember buying that cassette single because you needed that b-side featuring that new remix? Remember the remix that breathed new life into a track you had just starting grown tired of? Remember hearing the debut of a new rapper on a remix? Remember splurging and buying that maxi-single because it had not just 1 remix, but 2? And don't get me started on the unreleased b-side gems. That's a whole nother episode. The remix is a lost art today, but in the 90s it meant something. Some remixes had different vocals, and some different beats. Some remixes were just flat-out better than the originals. Some remixes started and even saved careers for many rappers and producers. Remember the first time you heard On The Run? What about the incredible Stress remix? Remember hearing Mos Def on the Stakes Is High Remix? Episode 65 is our first installment of our Remix series. Thanks to guys like Pete Rock, Marley Marl, DJ Premier, DJ Muggs, Salaam Remi, Large Pro, Da Beatminerz, Diamond D and Buckwild to name a few, the remix became a staple in 90s hip-hop. We got 68+ remixes on Episode 65 and we're just getting warmed-up, too! At the break, the gang discusses the beauty of the remix. We pick our favorites in each set (3) and take you down music memory lane with stories mixed-in with some unexpected hilarity. It's an addiction. It's something that not only has changed lives but saved lives. “The sweetest thing I've ever known. Just like a kiss on a collar bone” - Lauryn Hill. Music has been the biggest part of my heart, brain, and life for as long as I can remember. I started The Idea Fountain: Life Changing Conversations but to date we have never really talked about music. I think that's because a lot of music interviews can be promotional. When it comes to artists who have changed my life… I mean artists not songs…. There's 2Pac. He's not available. Kathleen Hanna and the Riot Grrrl movement really shaped who I am today (still working on that). There IS one person that worked created SO much music, that somehow got woven into the identity, memories, and culture of who I am that my life is forever changed - it's Salaam Remi. We're talking Fugees, Nas, and Amy Winehouse just to name a few. In true “Sawubona” fashion he sees artists, who are artists, in every sense of the word. He grew up loving the radio. And he's one of the best guys in music. We started talking music and the floodgates opened - this is the longest Idea Fountain episode to date but there are also so many gems. Enjoy!
