Johnnee Angell has been holding down multiple pillars of Hip Hop in California since the early '90s, and he's got some stories to tell. We were lucky enough to sit down with him and hear about his journey from dancing in his third-grade talent show all the way up to having his own studio, Hall of Just Iz—and everything in between. Johnnee talked about growing up around country music and getting support from his mom and grandmother. Johnnee talks about the Fu-Schnickens and Das Efx being influences. Recording his first album in Mendocino in 2004 and the whole scene and crew happening in Mendo back then. On getting into the Humboldt music scene and setting up his own studio, the Hall of Just Iz. Johnnee Angell talked about making 5 albums during the pandemic with Turtle. Respect was given to the Fatbol Cypher and the Insight Cypher. Then we closed the podcast with a real in depth conversation about music as an art, and the implications and responsibilities involved. Shoutout to Johnnee Angell and make sure you stay tuned for more from the HipHopHumboldt podcast! #HumboldtHipHop #HumboldtCounty #humboldtcountyhistory #humboldtcountyhiphop #hiphophumboldt _________________________________________

Phil and Jake rank bicycles, scatting (aka scat singing), and feeding cats like babies on the List of Every Damn Thing. If you have something to add to the list, email it to list@everydamnthing.net (or get at us on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook).SHOW NOTES: We briefly discuss ventriloquism, including mention of Candice Bergen's father Edgar Bergen, who was an actor, comedian and Vaudeville and radio ventriloquist. He was a big star, bigger than it's possible to imagine someone being when his main thing is throwing his voice through a dummy that sits on his lap ON THE RADIO. Even on TV or movies it doesn't really make sense because all the sound comes from the same speaker so throwing his voice doesn't seem that impressive and editing can be done anyways. It just seems like the kind of thing that only would work in live performances but here we are! His show was on the radio for 20 years! Phil rode a bicycle across the USA from Yorktown, VA to Vallejo CA. He's a very private person and doesn't like to talk about it much unless you mention bikes, the USA, Virginia, Kentucky, Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Colorado, Utah, Nevada, California or any of the geographical features therein. Jake rode a bike around the island of Losinj, Croatia. Jake refers to wearing a “turtle shell brace” after his bike accident, but it's maybe more commonly called a clamshell brace. Madison Square Garden is the World's Most Famous Arena. It sits on top of Penn Station between 7th and 8th Ave in Manhattan. It's sort of ugly and it replaced the old Penn Station which was an architectural marvel. We mention it because Phil notes that the original MSG was the site of many indoor bicycle races (and was actually on Madison Avenue which made a lot more sense). Notable scatters discussed include Steven Tyler (of Aerosmith), David Lee Roth, Cab Calloway, Ella Fitzgerald Bone Thugs-N-Harmony are Cleveland rappers who were signed and promoted by the late Eazy-E before his death. They were really influential in their sing-songy delivery (which you could hear in Crucial Conflict, Three Six Mafia & Nelly) and their post Geto Boys "horrorcore" angle (similar to Gravediggaz). Their biggest successes were probably Crossroads, a meditation on death and First of the Month, a celebration of plenty. They once filme a video of their trip to Switzerland which was made to get Phil Collins to agree to let them sample him for their song Home. Here's the Bone Thugs sketch on Saturday Night Live that Jake mentions. MC Skat Cat was an animated cat that would rap in the early 90s. Most famously with Paula Abdul. Phil just listened to "Skat Strut" for the first time and enjoyed the Earth, Wind & Fire sample. “Scatman (ski-ba-bob-ba-dop-bop)” by Scatman John is not to be confused with Scatman Crothers. The Fu-Schnickens were a hip-hop trio that were very difficult to understand but nonetheless quite impressive because they rapped at double (maybe triple?) speed. Chip-Fu in particular was just incredible even if the speed of the words made you dizzy. I follow him on twitter but he just tweets at regular speed, sadly. As a white kid from rural California with zero cultural context, Phil didn't understand that I was hearing a Caribbean thing. Their Ring the Alarm samples the Tenor Saw classic. They're mostly remembered now for making Can We Rock with Shaquille O'Neal. Phil might have taken it too far to say Doo Wop music was scatting. The second half of "Sh-Booom" is a good example of what he was referring to though. “Heebie Jeebies” by Louis Armstrong and his Hot Five is, as of 2021, in the public domain. Phil's thinking we should make this our show's theme song. Both New Orleans and Queens can claim Louis Armstrong. He was from New Orleans but he moved to Corona, Queens (very close to where the Mets play) and lived there from 1943 until his death in 1971. The Harder They Fall on Netflix features “Broader Than Broadway” by Barrington Levy, which is a fantastic song. We discuss “Panama” by Van Halen. Phil says that the lyrics to this song don't matter at all and they might as well be scatting. Here's that twitter thread of old paintings with people feeding cats like babies. How many shirtless men wearing elaborate angel wings, gold lamé shorts & furry cha-cha heels are really just actual angels? Sophia Chang pulls no punches. As the self-described (and indeed) “first Asian woman in hip hop,” Chang carries herself—happily, proudly—with the bravado and swagger of the industry brethren she managed throughout much of the ’90s and 2000s, including Ol’ Dirty Bastard (O.D.B.), RZA, and GZA of the Wu-Tang Clan, Q-Tip and A Tribe Called Quest, and D’Angelo. What makes Chang’s career particularly remarkable, beyond her having worked with so many bold-faced hip hop names, is both the organicness and audaciousness of her journey: A chance encounter in 1985 with Joey Ramone led to a budding friendship with the punk icon and, in a roundabout way, to working for Paul Simon in the late ’80s; through frequenting downtown clubs at the time, she befriended the Wu-Tang Clan, becoming a longtime confidante, insider, and ally of the hip hop collective. By the early ’90s, Chang had landed an A&R gig at Jive Records, where she signed the Fu-Schnickens and worked with names like KRS-One and Tribe. In 1996, having become deeply engaged in kung fu—a practice and passion she picked up through her friendship with the Wu-Tang Clan—Chang decided to take a major turn, leaving the music business altogether to manage Shi Yan Ming, a Shaolin monk who became her partner and the father of her two children, and his New York City temple. Though the relationship didn’t last—the couple split up in 2007—it proved a key part of Chang’s spiritual journey, life, and career. She would return to hip hop after that, working on various projects with and for the likes of RZA, GZA, and D’Angelo for a few years. Now, at 54, Chang is preparing her next big move, stepping out from behind the curtain to tell—no, to own—her story. This fall, with Audible, she’s releasing The Baddest Bitch in the Room, a coming-of-age audiobook memoir that chronicles her peripatetic path. Chang is soon to venture into television, too, having recently sold a screenplay to HBO.Born and raised in Vancouver, the first-generation Korean Canadian will not and cannot be pigeonholed, pinned down, put in a box, or stereotyped. On this episode of Time Sensitive, Chang talks to Spencer Bailey with refreshing candor about her exploits in the 1990s hip hop world, including her close friendship with O.D.B., whom she managed; the ever-shifting landscape of racism, sexism, and ageism in America; and why she feels that now, more than ever, is her time to shine.

The poster child for Jive Records was one Robert Kelly. Because I have my own convictions, he is not a part of this mix - directly. We do hear from Aaliyah, D-Nice, The Souls of Mischief, Fu-Schnickens and Tupac.
We continue our trip around the world by following Amsterdam with a jaunt to Palo Alto, or anyway James Franco's grimdark version of Palo Alto. If you're still thrilled every time somebody says "Hi kids! Do you like violence?" this book may contain the pages you've been waiting for. If Sammy Hagar singing "you're like rock candy, baby—hot, sweet, and sticky" is how you like your descriptions of the act of physical love, this book may deserve a place on your shelf. Or, maybe, if you just have a serious thing for the products of creative writing programs, Palo Alto may satisfy. Otherwise, come along if you care—come along if you dare—take a ride to the land inside of Silicon Valley. NOTE: this book contains serious quantities of objectionable content, including teen sex, not all of it consensual, violence, and racism and other forms of bigotry. Also, the author has been accused of inappropriate and exploitative sexual behavior, which we were not aware of at recording time: we apologize for not being aware of this. Had we known, we would have likely been much more critical of the book's content, or maybe not have discussed the book at all. (34:23) And of course, we talk about what we're into (49:50) and more Dad Moments (1:26:39). Chip-Fu is no stranger to the realm of hip hop music. As a radical member of a platinum-selling hip hop group the Fu Schnickens, his intricately interwoven flow left us all light headed, exhausted and wheezing for more. Get ready to inhale again, because Chip's back with a breath of fresh air for the entire industry. The trials and tribulations of life, love and music helped Chip conceive his latest project titled M.A.T.H (Music, Appreciation, Art, Time and Healing), The New Curriculum. Though his style remains on the cutting edge of hip hop, as a solo artist Chip has much more room to be creative. Reggae music is evident throughout the entire work and Chip's natural talent interblends both worlds instinctively. After collaborating with Shaquille O'Neal on the platinum album "Shaq Diesel", Chip gained a stronger sense of passion for the music business. This led him to establish his own company BLAQ-INK Entertainment. The production team gives up and coming artists direction and an avenue to cultivate their abilities as performers. Wisdom and responsibility also leads Chip to speak on two important topics: the paths he chose in life and the musical roads that need to be repaved in the industry. Music should be seen as a never ending jigsaw puzzle composed of intricate cut outs, says Chip. Additionally, Chip touches daily issues, which are not necessarily the wish lists many artists prefer to muse about. We'll learn more about Chip, his business moves, and the right steps for an independent artist on this show.
