Harvey Danger vocalist Sean Nelson makes a good case for his group being, in his words, "the last band through the door" of the alternative revolution: Though the quartet went gold thanks to the frenetic, inescapable "Flagpole Sitta" as the nineties closed, the landscape for them (and cohorts such as Cake, Semisonic or Fastball) would look much different a year later. By 2000, a sudden contingent of beefy backwards cappers, led by the likes of Limp Bizkit and Papa Roach, had commandeered arenas and the airwaves as an antithesis to pop radio. Paired with a massive label shake-up, this left Harvey Danger's expansive second album King James Version DOA. But like a lot of unsung masterworks, many have praised King James Version over the last quarter century for its dialed-in cacophony and sarcastic swagger -- enough to drum up major excitement for a first-ever vinyl pressing, which hit shelves as a Record Store Day exclusive recently from both Barsuk and Latent Print Records. Today, Nelson gives us the full arc of how King James Version was born, died and rose again, taking its throne on 12-inch format to mark the album's 25th anniversary. These days, large-scale high-production music festivals take over major cities and regularly attract crowds of every genre — including the current version of Lollapalooza that draws a casual 400,000 people to its resident Chicago stomping grounds. But kick it back a few decades and this kind of maximalist mega-show wasn't quite the norm it is now, especially for musical tastes outside of the mainstream. In their second collaborative book, Lollapalooza: The Uncensored Story of Alternative Rock's Wildest Festival, music journalists Richard Bienstock and Tom Beaujour flash back to when the Lollapalooza we know now was a new tour concept bringing 1990s alternative artists and ideas center stage. Lollapalooza first transports readers back to the festival's origins – a 20+ city summer sprawl highlighting alternative music, art, and counterculture, conceived by Perry Farrell as a farewell tour for his band Jane's Addiction. From 1991-1997, this breakthrough tour shifted the scope of live music experiences and helped forge a new path for the decade's subcultures to reach the masses and the media. Bienstock and Beaujour have compiled hundreds of new interviews to dig into the dirt of how the historic festival came into being at every level – from headlining artists and record label execs to tour organizers and promoters to freakshow performers, stage crews, and roadies. Lollapalooza is packed with gritty details of an era of shows that defied genres and drew crowds across style lines. Music, art, and politics drawing from alt-rock, goth, industrial, metal, punk, hip-hop, EDM, and avant-garde explorations – all coming together under one big tent. Featuring original interviews with iconic artists like Green Day, Patti Smith, Rage Against the Machine, Ice-T, Pearl Jam, Sonic Youth, Soundgarden, Nine Inch Nails, Jane's Addiction, Tool, Smashing Pumpkins, Alice in Chains, Metallica, and many more, this collection amplifies voices that helped shape generations of contemporary thinkers, creative activists, and live music audiences. Journeying through 90s nostalgia, uncensored first-hand accounts, and the long-term reverberations of a groundbreaking tour, Bienstock and Beaujour document a high-impact chapter of modern American music. A VIP pass to the action onstage and backstage, on the road and behind the scenes – Lollapalooza details the cultural shift of the alternative rock revolution and the echoes still heard through concert crowds today. Richard Bienstock is a journalist, musician, and author whose work has been featured in the New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Rolling Stone, Billboard, and Spin. He is the executive editor of Guitar Aficionado magazine and former senior editor of Guitar World and has authored and co-authored books including Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck and Slash: An Intimate Portrait.  Tom Beaujour is a journalist, music producer, and engineer who has been featured in television shows like Orange is the New Black, A Handmaid's Tale, and Criminal Minds. He is a co-founder and former editor-in-chief of Revolver and has contributed to Rolling Stone, the New York Times, Blender, and Billboard. He is the co-author of Nöthin' But a Good Time: The Uncensored History of the '80s Hard Rock Explosion, alongside Richard Bienstock. Upon rejoining the band following his departure in the Get Back sessions, George pulled his more serious material, most of which would end up on All Things Must Pass. Along with his blusey and lightweight "For You Blue," he also brought in a stomping little piano song he wrote during the sessions, "Old Brown Shoe." It wouldn't find a home for a few months until the band needed a b-side to "The Ballad of John & Yoko," and even then, it remains one of the more obscure songs in the Beatles catalogue. But that said, I've always loved it. George sings like he's really having fun with it, and whoever the hell is playing whatever on this song (it's all very murky and mysterious) is really killing it. But what's he singing about? George's shoe game was pretty solid after all. Maybe it's about stepping out with a new love? Maybe it's about leaving someone...or someone(s)? It's always a pleasure to welcome our old pal Sean Nelson back to RTB! Sean is best known as the singer of the band Harvey Danger, who's song "Flagpole Sitta" is one of the 90s defining songs, and the tip of the iceburg of a ton of great music in their catalogue that you'd do yourselves a favor to dig into (along with is own solo work). He's also now the host of his own podcast, The Wonder of It All, a deep dive in to the pros and cons of success. He's a great conversationalist so it only makes sense his podcast would be fantastic. What makes a song a good road trip song? This is something Katy has been musing over for several years now.   What better person to ask than a musician who has crossed the country on tour numerous times?   This week, Katy sits down with musician and podcaster John Roderick to talk about the allure of the American road trip, as well as what you should listen to while you are doing it.   John talks about his experience hitchhiking across the US as a recent high school graduate, and even hopping on a freight train, and how it sparked a love for overland travel. Now that his band touring days are over, he has begun taking road trips again, this time with his 90-year-old mother and his 12-year-old daughter.   He also describes how, as a native Alaskan, the continental US often felt like a foreign country growing up and how that was one of the things that encouraged him to begin exploring the country. He also shares his simple strategy for introducing both order and randomness into a road trip, as well as taking you places you wouldn't otherwise go.   John Roderick is the co-host of Roderick on the Line and Omnibus with Ken Jennings. He is the lead singer and songwriter for The Long Winters and has also toured with the band Harvey Danger. Ch-Chk! This week we step out of the garage to discuss many people's favourite song, "Save It For Later" by The (English) Beat (1:27). A ringing guitar sound, soaring strings, and cheeky lyrics with some clever Catcher in the wry-ness. Dave Wakeling's timeless tune has a meaningful feel & an appealingly feelingful meaning! A lil later, his elder Pete Townshend showed his reverence for the song, making a quiet, beautiful, and vulnerable epic out of it (1:08:25). In 1999, Harvey Danger partied with the song (1:38:35). A real contrast to PT's version, this one is sorta snotty & irreverent, but still captures the elliptical feel of the song. Dot Dot Dot!!! Stick around after the sign-off for a special bonus version of the song by a Mystery Band!

Sean Nelson is a writer and musician, known widely as the lead singer of the band Harvey Danger, whose 1998 single “Flagpole Sitta” became a staple of “alternative rock” radio and MTV and an inescapable earworm in 90s pop culture. In Part One of this conversation, we talk about what “alternative” means, tracing a line from the 1960s psychedelic culture that produced insane shit like the Monkees movie Head (1968) to the Seattle scene that drew Sean and many others in the early 1990s. Note: This episode was originally taped several days before the release of "Got To Get You Into My Life (Second Version/Unnumbered Mix)" from the upcoming Revolver Super Deluxe reissue. We reconvened several days after that track's release to discuss the alternate version, and how it not only compares to the original, but how it changes our perceptions of the track. That conversation has been added to the end of our ranking discussion. One of the defining traits of Revolver is the vast differences between its' songs. The sessions started off with John's psychedelic masterpiece "Tomorrow Never Knows," and then moved from the paisley, trippy world to the sunshine and R&B bombast of Paul's "Got To Get You Into My Life." He must've known it was full of potential, as he lead the band through 2 different arrangements of it, then sat on it for several weeks before landing on the song's iconic horn arrangement. As we learn recently though, that melody was around as part of a full band, guitar melody. Yet one of Paul's strengths has always been pulling the most out of a song's potential, and he does it swimmingly here. It's a bright, confident blast of Stax/Motown-influenced R&B, yet feels distinctly like something that would come out of swinging London in the summer of '66. One of my only wishes was that the final version had more of the full band energy in it. And wouldn't you know it, as soon as I say that in a podcast episode, days later, a version with the full band gets released! ALSO: At #133, yeah, I totally blew it. I don't know what I was thinking when I ranked this song #133. Mea culpa. I humbly offer my apologies on this gross misstep. We're happy to welcome this week's guest, singer/songwriter/musician Sean Nelson back to the podcast! As the first member of our illustrious 5-timers club, Sean (formerly of Harvey Danger) joins us to discuss the thrill of hearing new Beatles songs, why buying physical albums seems to be part of the Beatles experience, Paul's ode to chocolate, getting to be an honorary Rutle, and he and Julia share their best curly hair tips. So we'll be featuring a few "best of" Spot Lyte On… episodes over the next few weeks. Marco Collins is a Seattle radio personality best known as the flagship DJ and Music Director at Seattle's 107.7 ‘The End' during the 1990s grunge explosion which landed him a spot in The Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame.  Although he worked at a number of radio stations on the West Coast, VH1, and several record labels/management teams, the role he played in the 90s is what made Seattle synonymous with grunge music. Marco was instrumental in breaking artists such as Nirvana, Beck, Weezer, The Presidents of the United States of America, Foo Fighters, Garbage, and Harvey Danger. He also championed little-known bands, often being the one to break them into the mainstream. The bands that Marco broke went on to international stardom, which helped establish him as one of music's most influential tastemakers. Learn more about Lyte.
