Kevin just watched a horrible movie and can't wait to tell the Mayor all about it! So kids, welcome to 1978's Record City. It's purportedly a comedy, but yikes, not a single joke lands. But at least the setting is fun, since the whole thing takes place at a late 70s California record store, and they have the Blondie and Jim Croce posters to prove it. The movie is also notable for its ensemble cast of familiar faces from Flopcast favorites like Love Boat, Fantasy Island, Brady Bunch, Batman, Lost Saucer, and even Pink Lady and Jeff. Get ready for some wacky (and problematic and cringeworthy) record store hijinks that completely fail to entertain. Meanwhile, just outside Record City, there's a big talent show hosted by a certain Disco Duck-singing DJ, and starring a certain Sledge-O-Matic-wielding comedian. Do we recommend that you watch Record City? Absolutely not. Does Record City somehow feature just one single arm from a gorilla suit? Oh yes, it sure does. The Flopcast website! The ESO Network! Kurt "Big Boy" Alexander, The Voice of L.A. and the host of the wildly successful “Big Boy's Neighborhood," did the Hoffman Process in July of 2022. There are many themes in this beautiful conversation with Kurt and Drew. One theme is Kurt's realization that he knew very well who "Big Boy" is but didn't know who Kurt really is. He continues to be determined to do the deep work to come to know Kurt. Another theme is the power of coming to see the unconscious and compulsive patterns we adopt to navigate our family systems and survive the difficulties of childhood. Kurt never knew his father so logically it would make sense that he didn't even know where to begin to name the patterns he adopted from his dad. As you'll hear, the very nature of absence creates deep unconscious patterning. Kurt's story of how he came to see these patterns in his Process is poignant and tender. This conversation spirals through layers of understanding, echoing the nature of transformational work. As it goes deeper, the understanding Kurt shares about his life and who he is does, too. His generosity of Spirit shines through as his vulnerability gives us a glimpse into both his inner child and his Spiritual Self. More About Kurt "Big Boy" Alexander: “Big Boy” was born in Chicago and moved to California at the age of two. He became acquainted with the music world while DJing at parties. Today, “Big Boy” is The Voice of L.A. and the host of the wildly successful “Big Boy's Neighborhood,” every morning on iHeart Media's Real 92.3 the home of Hip Hop music in Los Angeles. He has dominated the ratings in all of the timeslots he has occupied ever since he first started his career in radio, from nights, afternoons, and mornings. The National Association of Broadcasters has recognized “Big Boy”s exceptional talent with the Marconi Award, a very rare three times. He is also an awarded member of the Radio Hall of Fame. “Big Boy” has been featured on many television shows including “Keeping Up With The Kardashians” and “HBO's Entourage.” He also debuted his own radio station in the wildly successful “Grand Theft Auto” video game and his YouTube channel, “BigBoyTV” has more than 200 million views of celebrity interviews. Along with various other charity work, “Big Boy” stepped up for his community during the COVID-19 pandemic. He fed hundreds of frontline essential workers at hospitals all over Los Angeles. As Mentioned in this Episode: Augie Johnson & Side Effect "Side Effect was an American disco and jazz-funk band that recorded between 1972 and 1982. The group was formed in Los Angeles, California in 1972 by Augie Johnson who became their leader." Rick Dees "Rigdon Osmond Dees III..., best known as Rick Dees, is an American entertainer, radio personality, comedian, actor, and voice artist, best known for his internationally syndicated radio show The Rick Dees Weekly Top 40 Countdown and for the 1976 satirical novelty song "Disco Duck". Scooter Braun "Scott Samuel "Scooter" Braun..., is an American record executive, talent agent, and entrepreneur. Known as the manager for artists such as Ariana Grande, Justin Bieber..." Listen to Scott 'Scooter' Braun on the Hoffman Podcast The Hoffman App The transformational journey to discovering your authentic self does not end after the completion of a Hoffman program. Rather, it is just beginning. That is why we created this app, full of guidance, practices, and visualizations to inspire and help you achieve your personal goals. We like to think of it as “Hoffman in your pocket. Version one of our app is only available in the iOS App Store for all devices, but the same 30-day integration program is available here, on a mobile-optimized page, for all operating systems. Coming off the hill... Kurt is referring to our beautiful new retreat site in Petaluma, California. Our center sits atop a hill on 180 acres. Lance talks about today's pop and country music and why it sucks. He opines it's a filtering issue. There's just no filter on what flushes down the internet stream. There used to be record companies and radio and TV programmers standing guard. Though, all of them must have been asleep at the switch with Disco Duck, Muskrat Love, et al. Et al. is a legal term - Google it!If anyone, and he means anyone, can record at home, and dump their cough, cough, "craft" onto the net there's no one to say, Hell no. Comedic performer and renowned radio personality, Rick Dees has made an indelible mark in the entertainment world with his captivating enthusiasm and quick-witted style. His number one internationally syndicated radio show, "The Rick Dees Weekly Top 40", is heard each weekend by more than 70 million people around the world, including virtually every city in the United States, 125 countries, 27 massive ships at sea, and on the Armed Forces Radio Network. Dees' familiar voice and multitude of characters have become a mainstay of the American psyche and have even extended into Beijing, China becoming the first English speaking radio show to entertain Chinese listeners on weekends.Dees became the hottest property in radio when he began hosting the top-rated morning radio show in Los Angeles on KIIS-FM in July of 1981. In a short time, he turned KIIS-FM into the number one revenue generating radio station in America. With unprecedented ratings success, Dees garnered many accolades including being named Billboard Radio Personality Of The Year ten years in a row. Additional honors included the Marconi Award, induction into the National Radio Hall Of Fame, and his induction into the National Association Of Broadcasters' Hall Of Fame.Latest ventures expanded Dees' abundant entertainment brands to mobile apps. His innovative hit music app BYOChannel streams an ever-expanding universe of music channels, plus invites users to "build their own" personalized channels for FREE using its growing 40-million track song library. Dees further upped the digital ante with his "Rick Dees Hit Music app, putting his "Rick Dees Weekly Top 40" and "Daily Dees" directly into the hands of every Apple and Android device owner.Rick Dees' introduction to the international entertainment arena began during the disco craze of the late 70's. Dees wrote and recorded "Disco Duck, the award-winning runaway hit that sold more than six million copies. This platinum recording earned him a People's Choice Award (1977) and the BMI Award for highest record sales in one year. In 1984 Dees received a Grammy Award nomination for his comedy album, "Hurt Me Baby - Make Me Write Bad Checks" and was further honored by winning his own Grammy Governor's Award.Television came calling in the early 90s with Dees hosting multiple late-night television series on both the ABC and Fox Television Networks. He guest-starred on "Roseanne", "Married With Children", "Cheers", "Diagnosis Murder" and many other hit television shows while also hosting the popular syndicated hit series "Solid Gold" from Paramount Television. His globally-recognized voice has been enjoyed on numerous animated features including "The Flintstones" where he starred as "Rock Dees", "Jetsons: The Movie "portraying "Rocket Rick", and most recently a featured voice in the cast of the hit Fox Entertainment series Family Guy.In feature films, Rick Dees held a leading role in the biographical film La Bamba portraying Ted Quillen, the young man who helped launch the career of rock 'n' roll star Ritchie Valens. While his ingrained sense of the absurd and his fervent love of comedy have earned him top ratings in every city in which he has performed, Dees also has become a consummate businessman and entrepreneur outside the radio world. He is the founder/partner of what is now the "Cooking Channel" on Discovery Networks. An avid outdoorsman, Dees is passionate about preserving the open land in America, and farms both crops and cattle in central Kentucky. He loves water skiing and golf, has a handicap of 6 on the links, and caddied at The Masters in Augusta, Georgia for PGA champion Mark O'Meara. An ardent pastry chef, Rick loves to bake - especially anything with chocolate. His desserts cookbook "Rick Dees All-Time Top 40 Greatest Desserts" has received rave reviews. Dees graciously donates all of its sales to the Salvation Army.

Some of these songs...I can't even find the years they were released. Drink Your Wine - Free Reign (1968?) Pop/Rock group from Evansville, Indiana. Originally known as The Corvettes. Frantz - Exhibition Tonight (1983) Freddy Cannon with Ron Dante - Down On Beale Street (2019) I have featured both of these guys from time to time. Not always in a flattering light. So it goes. Ennio Morricone - Here's To You (1971) (feat. Joan Baez) This song, from the movie Sacco and Vanzetti, has its own Wikipedia page. You should read about Sacco and Vanzetti. James Luther Dickinson - John Brown (1972) Linda Sexton - Unborn (197?) Lyn Todd - Devil Woman (1980) Claude Peloquin/Jean Sauvageau - Monsieur l'Indien (Quebec 1974) "Recorded in one take, “Monsieur L’Indien’s” haunting loops were created using an analog/mechanical hybrid: small motors rotated an arm equipped with magnets which triggered pre-programmed sensors featuring snares and bass sounds, like the Wurlitzer Sound Man. Péloquin’s contribution was a haunting spoken-word piece about civilization slowly taking over First Nations by building high voltage electric lines around Monsieur l’Indien’s house. It was a slap in the face of Québec’s government, which had nationalized hydroelectricity some ten years earlier. “Frontiers are the hemorrhoids around a nationalist rash,” says Péloquin." The instrument was called a "Sauvageau machine". The Emporium - I'm So Glad/Rain/I Dig Rock and Roll Music (1970) The Tremeloes - Yellow River (1970) Traffic - Paper Sun (1967) I love this song. Always did. Steve Winwood was and is amazing. This was Traffic's first single. Waiting For The Sun - Waiting For the Sun (1978) Golden Half (ゴールデン・ハーフ) - 24,000 Kisses (1972) Wikipedia: Golden Half (Gōruden Hāfu) was an early 1970s J-pop band made up of 5 hafu members including Maria Mori, Eva Mary and Luna Takamura. Golden Half was promoted by Watanabe Productions and was composed in September 1970 to sing and go-go dance on the Fuji TV show BEAT POP. They often sang western pop songs in Japanese and split in 1974. The band appeared in the nightclub scenes in Yasuharu Hasebe's Stray Cat Rock: Sex Hunter where they performed their hit song Kiiroi Sakuranbo ("Yellow Cherry"). WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE THEIR PERFORMANCE???? As my son would say, this song slaps. WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE THE TRAILER???? Trust me. You both do. Coalkitchen - Keep On Pushin (1977) Listen to the "pushin'" and you'll know it instantly as the hook in the Salt-n-Pepa song to come out years later. Those rap producers were no fools. Thieves. But not fools. Love - Walk Right In (1974) Yes, this is the same Arthur Lee band from psychedelia's heyday. Well, the same brand. Just totally different musicians. Charles Wilp - Werbung als Kunst - Afri Cola Werbung (1968) Another video you HAVE to see. "Sexy-mini-super-flower-pop-op-cola - everything is in Afri-Cola... " Famous models from the 1960s such as Marianne Faithfull, Amanda Lear, Donna Summer, Marsha Hunt [Ed: whom I have featured on this show many times - she had Mick Jagger's baby...] were depicted behind a pane of glass with ice crystals on advertising motifs for the rap-like slogan. According to Wilps, the idea for this arose during a visit to the Marshall Space Center in Huntsville (Alabama), where the Saturn V rocket was built at the time: The frozen, liquid oxygen stored in the workshop led to the formation of ice flowers on the windows of the moving cabins, behind the employees had hung pin-up photos of the 1960s beauties. Project 122 Featuring Charlie Green - Bus Stop (Electric Slide) (1990) Odyssey 5 – Everybody's Complaining (1974) Speed Glue Shinki - Calm Down (1972) Springbok - Night Fever (1978) A South African recording in the spirit of "Now That's What I Call Music", but it predated it. Except none of these recordings are by the original artists. They're cheap knockoffs. The Christopher Hayes Movement - Tribute To Jimi (1970) Marsha Hunt's 22 - Medusa (1973) The Equals - Black Skin Blue Eyed Boys (1970) Written by Eddie Grant, who, as POACA recall, had a hit with "Electric Avenue". The Piglets - Johnny Reggae (1971) Written, produced, and directed by Jonathan King, a relatively big deal in the UK (he came up with the "Ooga Chacka" intro to "Hooked On A Feeling" which was the hook for the US hit by Blue Swede) but in the US his only hit was "Everyone's Gone To The Moon" in 1967. He was another version of Kim Fowley, ever-teetering on the edge of an entire era without actually making any sort of big artistic difference. The Surfers - Windsurfin' (1978) It takes about 16 years for a trend to make it from the US to Sweden, I guess. The Wildweeds - I'm Dreaming (1968) Cadet Concept was the same label that featured Rotary Connection. Tony Fabbri - Tony The Cool Casanova (197?) I can find very little information on this guy, but I like this song for some reason. C.W. McCall - Kidnap America (1980) C.W. McCall was a character created by musician Billy Dale, for his advertising agency. The character was created for and first appeared in a commercial for Old Home Bread. Then, with producer Chip Davis, later to be famous for Mannheim Steamroller, he recorded a smash hit in the '70s with their CB/Trucker song, Convoy. This particular song was recorded in response to the hostage crisis in Iran from the previous year. Its effect remains to be fully measured. Moon Blood - Come Out Of Her (1970) Patrice Manget/Blue Gene Tyranny - Condom Sense (1981) Title song to a safe sex education film from 1981. The Residents - Loss of Innocence (1980) My second favorite Residents song. This album featured 40 minute-long songs. The album featured guest singers like Andy Partridge of XTC, Lene Lovich, and David Byrne of Talking Heads. Yes, THAT David Byrne. Amusement parks are caked with sounds A solid hunk of meat A barker's sweat flings from his tongue His tattoo shines with heat A wary stranger stands and sways Enraptured by his stance Two-headed goats come stumbling by And give a troubled glance The barker looks into the eyes The stranger tries to bend The barker swears to more delights For all who seek within The stranger enters canvas doors And smells the fresh-cut hay The barker points to Siamese twins The stranger looks away The eyes of horse-faced women Watch the few who wander through They sense the tension in the air And smell the sweet taboo A heart beats fast against a chest The stranger leaves the tent The waves of people drown the sounds Of loss of innocence

To finish the break-neck recording sessions for Rubber Soul, the band dug back into the archives for the song "Wait," originally recorded and shelved during the Help! album soundtrack. A new overdubs, and voila! A fine album track, it's a great performance from all parties, but it also has a hint of the beat-group that the band had outgrown by this album, so it's got an interesting vibe of being a Help song in a Rubber Soul costume. One wonders if late 65 Beatles would've recorded this in the same style as early 65 Beatles, considering the growth they'd made personally, professionally, and musically in that year. Joining us to this week is singer/songwriter Micah McKee. Micah has been a fixture in the New Orleans scene for years, with the bands Little Maker, The Essentials, and on his own. He also hosts the American 100 podcast, a podcast that explores the music of America by way of the history of the Billboard Top 100 chart. On this episode, recorded on Inauguration Day, we discuss everything from the relief of welcoming in a new administration, getting into the Beatles via the right album at the right time, making an album on your own with total control, to Disco Duck and recording a podcast with a robot named Rando. Micah's new album "Abundences" will be out Feb 16th, and our episode features the tracks "Your Favorite Beatle" and "Someone Lost The Map." You can check out Micah's music at https://micahmckee.bandcamp.com and pre-order "Abundences" at http://www.campersrule.com/artists/micahmckee. Andy Black has been involved in the Memphis music scene since he was in high school. He played bass and sang with the Strayfers. I know, because I was there. We met at Frayser High School and we have been friends ever since. He was at Shoe Productions for years helping create little ditties like "The Dog Police", "Disco Duck" and "Memphis I'm Coming Home To You." I talked to Andy about his time at Shoe Studio and the documentary about the importance of Shoe to the history of Memphis music. We also talked about working with Pat and Susanne Taylor for the first time they ever worked together on "Memphis I'm Coming Home to You" and that's not the Breaks. There is also more to the story of that song and Andy explains what the song is all about. He also talks about his new project with David Beaver.

This week Aaron Rubio dives onto the musical grenade that is "Disco Duck", the 1976 number one hit by Rick Dees and his Cast of Idiots. Perhaps known best for his long-running Top 40 countdown program, Rick Dees also recorded a string of disco parody songs in the 1970s that featured duets with personified woodland creatures. Despite the ridiculous nature of the songs, one of them managed to hit number one, thanks to the cocaine-fueled, undiscerning sonic landscape of the disco era. Why did Rick Dees let producers of Saturday Night Fever use "Disco Duck" in the film, but not allow it on the soundtrack? How is the tale of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde reflected in this song? What dollar amount can be put on the emotional trauma caused by parading around in a giant duck suit? All these questions and more will be answered on this week's episode of Single File. Your participation matters. Please don't forget to rate this song at singlefilepod.com!!! Kirk takes the wheel as “Music Raygun” goes back in time to the 1970s, when everything was bright and shiny on the outside, but sort of washed out and profoundly bleak beneath the surface. That's right: It's our disco episode. There’s Travolta, “Dance Fever” and, of course, a “Soul Train” line. That’s all to be expected. Less expected is… Ethel Merman? And don’t worry; we also sit through “Disco Duck.” Yeah. We do that. For you. All this, plus a fish saves the city of Pittsburgh. This debriefing on "record nerd Christmas" is better late than never, right? Bobby and The Colonel hit Memphis for Record Store Day this year to score some special releases from New Zealand and enjoy some local brews from the Bluff City. Stache(less) held things down in Nashville, eschewing the long shopping lines in favor of free beer and live bands. RSD releases getting the nod include LPs by Spelling Mistakes, The Scavengers, La De Da's, Pagans live, retrospectives of Idle Race and The Moles, 7"s by Nirvana, Ron Jeremy, Milk & Cookies, Devo/Flaming Lips and Sonics/Mudhoney split 7"s, Dinosaur Jr. 7" box set, and "1990 Bronx Warriors" and "Last House on the Left" soundtrack LPs. PLUS: This episode marks the maiden recording from the new Total BS Headquarters at Stately Hazzard Manor, nestled somewhere in the Bobbywood Hills. The Colonel suspects some of his "residual fanciness" may be influencing Stache(less). Jerry Lawler is fingered as a suspect in the unsolved mystery of who let the dogs out. And was the advent of punk rock the most important moment in American music in 1977, or does that honor belong to "Disco Duck?"
