Rainy night/ car interior—There are two 80s songs that are my absolute nemesis. Songs dealt to me over the radio by guys like Casey Kasem and Rick Dees on our way to or back from church. (How Rick Dees survived the 90s and early aughts onslaught of “nuts” hurled at his name is beyond me).Two songs appear in my head regularly and must be sung aloud to satisfy a tic.“On the Wings of Love,” by Jeffrey Osborne inexplicably (I didn't own the album) appears in my head daily. I only ever heard the song sandwiched between copy or commercials on Sunday mornings in 1982. I'm not sure “On the Wings of Love” ever peaked any top tens. Yet if my life were to be played off in my willing and unwilling musical obsessions, “On the Wings of Love” would be #1. Sigh.Number two is “I Love a Rainy Night,” and that ***** hit #1 on those important top musical charts that I'm just realizing I have no idea how they're measured. Okay, I'm looking at Billboard Hot 100 on Wikipedia and it says “rankings are based on sales (physical and digital), online streaming, and radio airplay in the U.S.” I feel like that could be juiced on the streaming and radio side to tilt numbers, right? Actually why am I conspiracy-ing this I have no idea what I'm talking about and who cares. Why wouldn't “I Love a Rainy Night” appear in my head every time it is both raining and nighttime? The song is literally about loving a crying night sky. And it's snappy af.I, too, love a rainy night.

She tells us about growing up with a mom who allowed messes and was a creative spirit herself. After graduating with a degree in editorial journalism, Elizabeth regales us with stories from the PR firm where she learned to have great writing productivity and also met celebrities like Frank Sinatra, Paul Newman, Bob Hope and Rick Dees. Vicki and I ooh-and-aah over Elizabeth's long list of interesting writing projects including her weekly column for the most viewed swim website and feature pieces like one about young swimmers who were on deck when the 1973 Chilean coup took place. We benefit from Elizabeth's great wisdom about switching projects when stuck creatively – from writing, blogging, playing the flute, and back again. She also shared the book that inspired her blogging journey – The Artist's Way by Julia Cameron. This is a great episode filled with wonderful stories from the delightful, inspirated and creative Elizabeth Wickham. We know you'll love it. Show notes: Episode 21 show notes on HoTM E.A. Kurt "Big Boy" Alexander, The Voice of L.A. and the host of the wildly successful “Big Boy's Neighborhood," did the Hoffman Process in July of 2022. There are many themes in this beautiful conversation with Kurt and Drew. One theme is Kurt's realization that he knew very well who "Big Boy" is but didn't know who Kurt really is. He continues to be determined to do the deep work to come to know Kurt. Another theme is the power of coming to see the unconscious and compulsive patterns we adopt to navigate our family systems and survive the difficulties of childhood. Kurt never knew his father so logically it would make sense that he didn't even know where to begin to name the patterns he adopted from his dad. As you'll hear, the very nature of absence creates deep unconscious patterning. Kurt's story of how he came to see these patterns in his Process is poignant and tender. This conversation spirals through layers of understanding, echoing the nature of transformational work. As it goes deeper, the understanding Kurt shares about his life and who he is does, too. His generosity of Spirit shines through as his vulnerability gives us a glimpse into both his inner child and his Spiritual Self. More About Kurt "Big Boy" Alexander: “Big Boy” was born in Chicago and moved to California at the age of two. He became acquainted with the music world while DJing at parties.  Today, “Big Boy” is The Voice of L.A. and the host of the wildly successful “Big Boy's Neighborhood,” every morning on iHeart Media's Real 92.3 the home of Hip Hop music in Los Angeles.   He has dominated the ratings in all of the timeslots he has occupied ever since he first started his career in radio, from nights, afternoons, and mornings.  The National Association of Broadcasters has recognized “Big Boy”s exceptional talent with the Marconi Award, a very rare three times. He is also an awarded member of the Radio Hall of Fame. “Big Boy” has been featured on many television shows including “Keeping Up With The Kardashians” and “HBO's Entourage.” He also debuted his own radio station in the wildly successful “Grand Theft Auto” video game and his YouTube channel, “BigBoyTV” has more than 200 million views of celebrity interviews. Along with various other charity work, “Big Boy” stepped up for his community during the COVID-19 pandemic. He fed hundreds of frontline essential workers at hospitals all over Los Angeles. As Mentioned in this Episode: Augie Johnson & Side Effect "Side Effect was an American disco and jazz-funk band that recorded between 1972 and 1982. The group was formed in Los Angeles, California in 1972 by Augie Johnson who became their leader." Rick Dees "Rigdon Osmond Dees III..., best known as Rick Dees, is an American entertainer, radio personality, comedian, actor, and voice artist, best known for his internationally syndicated radio show The Rick Dees Weekly Top 40 Countdown and for the 1976 satirical novelty song "Disco Duck". Scooter Braun "Scott Samuel "Scooter" Braun..., is an American record executive, talent agent, and entrepreneur. Known as the manager for artists such as Ariana Grande, Justin Bieber..." Tread Perilously's crossover month proves as a good excuse to examine episode seven of The Brady Bunch Variety Hour -- a crossover in its own right! In the narrative sketches, the school-aged Brady kids meet the children from What's Happening!! when they are moved to the Bradys' studio classroom for the day. The actors always present as themselves, but the show tries very hard to make them behave as their characters. Nevertheless, the quick rapport between the two groups leads Peter to suggest the What's Happening!! kids be guests on the Bradys' variety program. Will Mike and Carol be as pleased? Also, will they be able to articulate why they don't want young actors who play kids from Watts on the show? Paul Pakler from Paul and Corey Cross the Streams joins Erik and Justin for a look at 1970s variety television. Erik, being on assignment, must use a lower-quality microphone. Paul blames Richard Nixon (haroo!) for the enduring popularity of the Brady concept. Justin tries to find some modern personalities who could host a variety show. Erik blames Ken Ober for Susan Olsen's downward spiral. The horror of Alice's musical number is defined in detail and Rick Dees is almost ignored. Danielle Spencer proves to be the episode MVP and Fake Jan makes a small impression.

Frank Murphy's friend Kristen Detrow is today's co-host. When she lived in California, Kristen called herself Kris. Frank is wearing another shirt he bought at the estate sale at Prestige Tuxedo. The shirts belonged to the late father of Eddie Mannis. Kristen loves to shop at estate sales.  Frank jokes that he should have a yard sale to sell copies of the book he's trying to write. He started writing his memoirs after losing a radio job but stopped when he started a podcast. Tim Coleman urged Frank to finish the book. Kristen says she will be Frank's accountability partner.  Kristen offers to call Frank at 4:00 in the morning. Frank says 4:00 is the worst hour. It's bad for people who stay up late and for people who get up early. Kristen's husband Jeff did morning radio for 35 years. She says he would show up at 6:05 for a show that started at 6:00.  Frank tells how he and his coworkers at KROQ would notice that Rick Dees prerecorded the first 90 minutes of his show on KIIS. They had tapes of Rick reacting to earthquakes of various intensity.  Frank missed a few Southern California earthquakes because he was traveling when they struck. A lucky leprechaun figurine on the fireplace was the only thing in Frank's house that broke during the 1994 Northridge earthquake.  Frank and his wife Jere visited Historic Brushy Mountain State Penitentiary. They saw displays of prisoners' weapons and items smuggled into the prison. Townspeople could get their laundry done at the prison for free.  Kristen and her husband took their daughter Mia to Brushy Mountain. They took a guided tour given by a former prisoner named George who did time for blowing up a country club when attempting to break into the safe. Kristen had to translate George's thick accent for Mia.  Frank likes regional accents. In East Tennessee, people flatten the long I sound. Kristen and Frank compare California accents.  One Sunday, Frank and Jere visited their friend Fr. Michael Woods in Fairfield Glade. After Mass, Frank and Jere went to Buc-ee's in Crossville to get brisket sandwiches. Kristen and her husband Jeff have been to that Buc-ee's and to one near Calhoun, Georgia. Kristen likes to get pecan chicken salad at Buc-ee's.  Frank says Buc-ee's was a convenience store but Kristen says it's more than that. Buc-ee's seems to sell their own version of things like Beaver Nuggets instead of cheese puffs or caramel corn. They had free samples of Beaver Nuggets. They sell many kinds of Buc-ee's merchandise including clothing from head to toe. Frank thought it was silly that they sell no-show socks.
