This week, I am creating The Ultimate Mixtape by asking 65 different people (previous My Weekly Mixtape guests, friends of the show & the amazing Patreon Mixtapers) the same question: If you had to choose one song for the ultimate mixtape (any song / any genre), that would be locked away in a time capsule for others to discover years or decades for now…which song would you choose and why?  Now, I'm not lost on the fact that the question is just a spin on the “desert island song” question that a lot of my guests have been asked countless times. The twist for the next few episodes is: I am taking those 65 song choices (all of which are from various bands, artists, decades, genres and tempos), and curating them into what I hope will be a properly sequenced playlist from a musical perspective!  At the very least? This was a fun & unique twist on a question as old as interviews themselves. But at its best? Congratulations, you're listening to The Ultimate Mixtape!!  This ep. Includes the second collection of 20 responses! Be sure to check out Vol. 1 and stay tuned for Vol. 3 to get the full experience!   Guests appearing in Vol. 2 (in no particular order): Matt Scannell of Vertical Horizon, ZZ Ward, Jesse Dayton, Jon Loree of Tantric & Smile Empty Soul, Jamie DiTringo of The Sees, Jim Santora, Author of The Underrated Rock Book, Sherry Thomas of The Aquarian Magazine, Leah Jones of The Struts Life, Alex Gomez of The Sleevie G. This week, I'm joined by The Doobie Brothers' Ed Toth to talk about his musical journey that started as a child, jamming along to songs by the band, to his 9 year role as the drummer of Vertical Horizon which, in a full circle moment, lead to his role playing drums for the Doobie Brothers, a role he's held for the last 2 decades. In this episode, we discuss: the stories behind Vertical Horizon's hit album “Everything You Want” (which turned 25 last year, and was a feature of a My Weekly Mixtape Album Dive episode), as well as the 2003 follow up “Go;” the decision behind his departure from Vertical Horizon and the band's continued relationship to this day; his role within the Doobie Brothers, that started out as one of the dual drummers, along side of Michael Hossack as well as Tony Pia, to his role as the band's sole drummer; his 2017 project Button, which also features fellow Doobie Brothers member John Cowan, along with Keith Howland (formerly of Chicago); the songs that are essential to a Doobie Brothers live show, which includes more than just the radio staples; playing the band's albums “Toulouse Street” & “The Captain & Me” in their entirety; the band's plans for 2025, and so much more! Bonus Episode: Sean Hurley Breaks Down His Most Iconic Basslines Sean Hurley is a renowned bassist of both studio and stage, known for his dynamic playing and musicality among the top artists in Pop and Rock Music. He gained significant recognition as sideman for John Mayer, dating back to the Battle Studies tour (2010), and then continuing on as a session bassist, contributing to some Mayer's most popular hits on Born and Raised, Paradise Valley, and Sob Rock. Hurley also played a crucial role in Robin Thicke's break-out album (The Evolution of Robin Thicke), laying down smooth, groove-driven basslines that helped define Thicke's signature sound and R&B style. Additionally, Hurley toured and recorded with Vertical Horizon during their debut album, adding depth and precision to the band's alternative rock vibe, ultimately leading to several chart-topping hits. Here I'll sit down with Sean to talk about his extensive session career, his iconic bass playing, the gear uses to get his signature sound, and get him to re-create some of his most iconic tones for the biggest hits he played on.   SPONSORS Sweetwater Gear Exchange | Sweetwater's Used Gear Marketplace Sign up FREE with no seller fees when you put your earnings on a Sweetwater gift card https://sweetwater.com/used   Sean's Preferred Amplifier | Ampeg B15  Check out Ampeg's NEW pedal-format B15 & SVT all-in-one DI https://ampeg.com/products/pedals/sgt...   Sean's Preferred Strings | LaBella  La Bella 760FL (43-104) https://www.labella.com/product/760fl/ La Bella RX-N4D (45-65-85-105)  https://www.labella.com/product/rx-n4d/   Sean's Preferred Overdrive | EBS Valve Drive  https://ebssweden.com/content2/effect...   Sean's Preferred Tuner | Peterson StroboStomp  https://www.petersontuners.com/shop/p...   Sean's Preferred Cables | Asterope Pro Studio:  https://www.asterope.com/custom-shop/... REVERED AMERICAN GUITARIST/SINGER/SONGWRITER/JOHN WESLEY ON TOUR WITH ALT ROCK BAND VERTICAL HORIZON: EXCLUSIVE ON INTERVIEWING THE LEGENDS WITH RAY SHASHO! Hello everyone and welcome to another edition of Interviewing the Legends I'm your host Ray Shasho. John Wesley has built a long and varied career as a songwriter, “sideman” guitarist, and recording artist. His music has been called lyrically sensitive and musically dynamic. His songwriting style incorporates emotionally charged vocals that evoke the honesty and intimacy of Roger Waters and Patty Griffin coupled with a melodic yet intricate guitar style reminiscent of David Gilmour, Alex Lifeson, Jeff Beck, and Warren Haynes. Wesley's guitar-driven acoustic and electric songs represent the cultivation of many inspirations — alternative, progressive, art, and classic rock genres intertwined with poignant lyrics drawn from the poetry of the common man. What really appeals to Wesley's fans worldwide is a spark of sincerity and sensitivity so oft absent in today's mainstream music In 2021, Wesley began touring as a guitarist and backing vocalist for alternative rock band from D.C. Florida native McCoy Gibbs made the move to Nashville, Tennessee at the age of 18 to pursue a Music Business degree at Belmont University.  He not only earned that degree, but also made lifelong connections and friendships while falling in love with the city, energy, and opportunity that is Nashville.  The crazy part is that Gibbs didn't really learn to play drums until his college years.  For this natural musician, drums and rhythm came naturally and he found his groove, literally. After college, Gibbs emerged as a drummer while playing with pop/rock band Hot Celle Rae.  He then went on to become an independent drummer to soak in all the music he could.  During this time he met tons of musicians, bands and artists, cut his teeth on the grind of Broadway bars and “honky tonks,” and jumped in a van for a random show in Montana.  He loved every minute of it. In 2013, his hard work paid off when Gibbs successfully auditioned for CMA-nominated Duo of the Year, Love and Theft, and hit the road for the busiest year of his life thus far.  It hasn't slowed down for him since.  From touring, live TV performances, music videos and award shows, Gibbs has kept himself quite busy. Gibbs is currently playing with 2017 CMA New Artist of the Year nominee Lauren Alaina, and continues to find other ways to fill in the occasional off day with sessions, shows, and housework.  If there is an example of hard work, passion, and preparation paying off, McCoy Gibbs is that example.   Some Things That Came Up:  -2:45 Tall drummers  -4:15 Playing the Opry -5:00 Imposter Syndrome?  -5:20 Musical family. Has it really been 25 years since "Everything You Want" took over the airwaves? The 90s are littered with one hit or album wonders, artists that broke out, but were forced to break down thanks to a chaotic music biz, but VH mastermind Matt Scannell has not only survived but thrived. He could have packed it in after the label buried their follow up album to the double platinum breakthrough, or he could have called it quits at any point while scratching to make it as an indie artist. But, instead, he's gone from strength to strength, gaining the admiration of people like Neil Peart and Richard Marx along the way. The band is about to hit the road with Gin Blossoms and Toad the Wet Sprocket to celebrate those glory days. Hear his stories from how he met the legends to his love of watches. As a young kid growing up in a musical family in St. Louis Minnesota, he discovered KISS, and from that moment on, in addition to being a hockey player in his youth (and running his first ever 5K at the age of six), all he wanted to do was become a guitarist. His mother said that was fine, but he had to learn piano first, and after 3 years of piano lessons, he could pick up the guitar. He didn't complete those three years of lessons until he was 18 years old. By his mid 20's he was teaching music, even though he was self-taught. As a stay at home dad (his wife was an editor of a medical journal), he needed to contribute to the family income, and teaching seemed the natural thing to do. That along with flipping houses (his first one took him 5 years), his outside endeavors allowed him to pursue his musical career. In this episode, we discuss how sometimes, our creative dreams can get in the way of good financial sense, how we rely on others to handle that for us (such as record labels), or completely ignore the fact of putting money away for that rainy day. How do we finance one's career? How do you sustain your love for music in the long run, when things aren't quite working out the way you thought?
