Let's talk about the pros and cons of SEO-ing your WordPress website. Building your website with WordPress can be great for SEO. But it can also screw up your SEO if you aren’t careful. In this episode we go over why and how to avoid the pitfalls. Episode Highlights 02:23 Was a little sneaky with the title to create some controversy. I think WordPress is great for some people to use and detrimental to others. 05:20 If you do have your website on WordPress, you don’t need to move it. There are great plugins, like Yoast, that can help you with your SEO on Wordpress. The variety of plugins are what make WordPress great for SEO. 08:41 The problem with WordPress comes when you are new to it or are uncomfortable using the back-end. If you don’t work with building websites all the time, you may get very overwhelmed with WordPress. 11:56 WordPress is very adaptable because you have access to so much on the back-end. But that can also be its problem. 13:41 Other website platforms, like SquareSpace, can be great for website building. If you are new to website building, you should consider one of the other platforms for your website. 18:19 Despite what people say, using WordPress for your website is not free. Technically, WordPress is a free software that anyone can use, but if you want people to see your website you will need to pay for a hosting service. 22:32 WordPress requires a lot more of your time for maintenance than other website platforms. You may end up spending time on your site that you’d rather spend elsewhere. 24:24 WordPress can suck for SEO because, a lot of the time, it just doesn’t get done. 25:48 My free gift for you today is the On Page SEO Checklist 3 Key Points There are many plugins that can make WordPress great for SEO. If you are not comfortable using the back-end, WordPress might not be for you. With WordPress, there are updates you will have to go in and do yourself. Meta tags have gotten a bad rap. But that’s because people keep confusing them with meta keywords. I can see why. On this episode of the Organizing Your Business podcast, we talk about Meta tags and how they continue to play an important role in SEO. Meta tags exist within the back-end code of websites. Even though they often get confused with meta keywords that is only part of the meta tag story. Let’s walk through the reasons why meta tags are still important for your SEO success. Episode Highlights: 03:21 When you have a website, you have a front-end that everyone sees and a back-end that is how you create the website. Within the back-end code, there are meta tags. 04:44 People figured out how to key-word stuff, and they would put in all the keywords they wanted people to search for. Because of this, Google said they were going to stop using meta keywords for SEO. 07:49 There is a difference, though, between meta keywords and meta tags, because we still have the meta title and meta description. 08:28 The meta title and meta description are what shows up in the search engine results. Your title and description are what get people to click on your search engine results. 11:27 My free gift for you today is the On-Page SEO Checklist 3 Key Points: Meta tags are part of the back-end code for websites. People began to keyword-stuff, which led search engines to stop using meta keywords for SEO - but this does not include the meta title and meta description. Meta titles and descriptions are what get people to click on search engine results. Do you have a podcast? Or make videos? Have you ever thought about having them transcribed? On this episode of the Organizing Your Business podcast, I talk to you about the importance of transcribing as well as my favorite transcribing service. I explain how a transcription of your video or podcast will help with SEO by increasing your word count and keyword count. And I rave about my new favorite transcription service. Episode Highlights: 03:22 - One of the factors for SEO is longer posts, more words in your posts. 04:00 - If you podcast or make videos, you may have highlights or links, but your posts will have very few words. 04:24 - Search engines aren’t able to listen to your podcasts to understand your content. 06:42 - Transcription allows you to have way more words in your posts. 07:38 - Also, words on the page are much easier to skim if someone doesn’t have a lot of time, or the desire or ability to listen. 08:52 - You don’t have to transcribe your own podcasts, there are companies that will do it for you. It’s important to choose a transcription company that will complete quality work and give you the best results. 11:37 - The new transcription service I recommend and why I love them. 15:43 - Where you should put the transcriptions? 16:40 - Your free gift - On-Page SEO checklist linked below. 3 Key Points: Transcribing allows you to have more words in your posts, which helps your SEO. If you aren’t able, there are companies that can transcribe your videos for a fee. I recommend Scribie for video transcriptions. Bigger is better, right? More, more, more. Especially when it comes to SEO traffic to your website, right? You want as much as you can get by ranking high for those one or two-word phrase keywords. Eh, not so fast. On this episode of the Organizing Your Business podcast, I talk about long tail keywords and why you don’t need to rank with short single keywords to be successful with SEO. I explain the difference between “short tail” or “major” keywords and long tail keywords and why long tail keywords are the better option for optimizing SEO as a small business. Episode Highlights: 02:56 - I have a gift at the end of the podcast to help with SEO. 04:05 - What is a keyword? 06:06 - If you are going to have a post, you want there to be a theme. 07:19 - Keywords are important for SEO because that’s how search engines know what a page or post is about. 12:06 - Long tail keywords are longer phrases. 15:00 - With the rise in voice assisted searches, people are more likely to use longer phrases when they are searching. 17:15 - If you rank only for major keywords, you may get a lot of traffic but have a high bounce rate (people clicking away quickly) and your SEO rankings will drop. 18:15 - If you rank high for long tail keywords you will have less traffic but people will stay on your website longer. 19:24 - There is much less competition for long tail keywords. 22:28 - How you can find long tail keywords, including my 2 favorite tools. 26:44 - Your free gift - On-Page SEO checklist linked below. 3 Key Points: Keywords let search engines know what a website, page or post is about. Long tail keywords are longer, more specific phrases. SEO is impacted by how long people stay on your page and getting the right targeted traffic. Perfectionism. Most of us suffer from it. Especially if you are the type to be reading this post. Heck, even most of those people that seem like they do everything half-assed, it’s usually because they want it to be so perfect they get paralyzed, and do nothing. In this episode, I talk about how perfection is impossible, so stop wasting so much time and effort in trying to reach it. If you strive for the “good,” you can use that extra time and effort to do more good. This episode is as much for me as it is for you. Episode Highlights: 01:01 - This Italian proverb, attributed to Voltaire, has been around for a long time! 04:40 - A story of how I need to be more like my son. 07:38 - Another example: The "imaginary" company that failed because of "perfection." 11:18 - Perfect doesn't really exist, and I explain why. 3 Key Points: Investing in perfection will ultimately slow down progress. Perfection is un-attainable. Get your "good" out there. If you don't get it out there, your "good" will never make it to those that need it. Do you want someone to steal your website? I’m guessing the answer is no. I wasn’t too happy when someone stole mine. It sucked. It still sucks. I’m working on getting it back. Luckily it’s an old website. Not my current one. It was kinda my own fault. I preach using difficult passwords and not reusing the same password... anywhere. But I wasn’t always so preachy. And I used to use much easier passwords. (hides face in shame) And I used the same passwords... all over the place. When I saw the light, I forgot to go back and change the password on my very first website because I wasn’t really using it anymore. I can make mistakes just like anyone else. (still hiding face in shame) Well… the next 3 podcast episodes are your chance to learn from my mistakes. Please listen. Today’s episode is about how you can use crazy, super-difficult passwords with ease. Use something different everywhere (including your own website login) without having to memorize 300+ passwords. Could you do that? I couldn’t. Just memorize 1. Yep, just 1. In this episode I’m going over 2 different services you can use to store your passwords and have them available when you need them. Content is King. That’s how the saying goes, anyway. But WHY is content king? It’s how you communicate with your audience. It’s how you build a relationship with your audience. It’s how you build the know-like-and-trust factor. The key to any good relationship is communication. And make no mistake, the key to a good business nowadays is relationships. Unless you are some giant company and can afford to spend millions to get your message EVERYWHERE and hope that it lands with the right person somewhere, you need to develop relationships to get people to listen to your message. (There is a whole other part to this about you listening in the relationship, but we will go into that in a future podcast.) In this podcast you will learn how to figure out what your audience wants to hear from you. And how often. ---------------------------------- If this podcast has been helpful for you, go ahead and - Subscribe in iTunes. We're talking all about SEO and why you should care about it. My guess is if you clicked on this episode, you know this is something you should be doing. I hope your New Year is going well. I am starting a series here all about search engine optimization, or SEO. Most people don't really like SEO because it's kind of annoying and difficult. But if you have a website, it's a necessary evil. Most people think it's just about finding keywords and stuffing them anywhere they can in their posts and pages, but it's actually much more than that. At the same time, it's not really as hard as you think. But it feels like a daunting subject because unless you're an SEO expert… and have been studying this forever... it's like, "Oh my gosh, you might as well tell me that I need to start coding my website from now on because it's just way too much on top of all the other things that you need to do.” We're just going to start breaking it down. In this podcast episode I'm going to tell you what it is and why you should care. Then in future episodes I'm going to tell you how you can do what you need to do with your SEO. First things first, what is SEO? It's what you do to rank in search engines. And I'm not talking about just Google… any search engine. Google is one of them. Bing, Yahoo, whatever else people use to look for stuff. But it's not you the big ones. It's also things like Facebook, Pinterest. Anywhere that you type into a search bar and people would go to look for something in particular. That is going to be a type of search engine. Just click here for your Blog Post SEO Checklist. I've got two resolutions for you. They're easy tech things that you can do to help you save some time. One is for your computer and one is for your phone. The first one for your computer is how to turn off your Facebook newsfeed. Unfortunately there isn't a way to do this on your phone yet, so that can still suck up your time. If you find yourself going to Facebook and just getting sucked into that newsfeed. And all of a sudden it's like an hour or two later. You go to do one thing… or look in a group… or just do some business stuff. And that newsfeed just sucks you in and you don't even like it. They tease you at first by posting a picture of a friend's kid. And it's cute. And the baby. And awesome things that you want to just like and support. Then all of a sudden you get into all the political stuff. And you just wanna scream and rip your hair out. And you're not even happy at the end of it. Then you realize that you've wasted like two hours reading all this stuff. Well, I can tell you how to turn off that newsfeed so you don't have to worry about it. You can go to Facebook. Do your group stuff. Do your business stuff. And then just get off of it. Because there's no newsfeed to suck you in. If this podcast has been helpful for you, go ahead and - Subscribe in iTunes. We're going over what is 404 error page and why should you care? And how it is either helping or hurting your online business. Here's a big hint. You really should care. What is a 404 error page? What in the world are you talking about Tia? It's called a file not found error. I'm sure you've come across a 404 error before. You go to a webpage, and you type in a specific URL or a specific page or blog post or something and that post is now gone. It's got a different URL, or it just doesn't exist anymore. So when you type in that specific URL, for example, you type in tiahain.com/15crazysauce. Well, there's nothing called 15-crazysauce, because that's not what I titled the episode. So if you typed that in, you would get my 404 error page. “It’s like I don't know what you're talking about and so I'm going to tell you I don't know what you're talking about." The way the website tells you that, is it gives you that 404 error page. It's like, "File not found, don't know what it is.” So the actual website exists, because if the website didn't exist it would say, "I don't even know what website you're talking about." You wouldn't get a specific 404 error page. The website exists, but that specific URL ON that website doesn't exist. If you have a bunch of different letters and just one letter could be wrong. It’ll take that person to the 404 error page. Most of the time, people get to a 404 error page because they're looking for something very specific. This episode is sponsored by your PDF with 404 Error Videos. You might be thinking to yourself, “Great, Tia! That’s all well and good but HOW am I supposed to create this 404 Error page you tell me I should design specifically? Don’t worry. I got you covered. A while ago, I created videos on how to make a 404 Error page if you have WordPress and LeadPages… if you have WordPress and a plugin… and if you use Squarespace. Just go to TiaHain.com/21download. You will get access to a PDF with the links to all the videos. Those videos will show you how to add a specific 404 Error Page if you have WordPress and Leadpages if you have SquareSpace, or if you just have WordPress and you want a good free plugin to use. We're almost at the end of the year, but this week's Tech Tip Tuesday is about an app that I love using to organize my recipes. And it may not sound like it's business related, but if you do a lot of cooking, this app will save you a ton of time that you can use for other things. So the app I'm talking about is called Paprika, as in… is it a spice or an herb? It's a spice, right? Paprika, the pretty red thing that you put on deviled eggs. I'm sure it goes in other stuff, too... Anyway, the app is called Paprika. I would suggest getting it. I'm not sure if you have to look for Paprika app for recipes or just look for Paprika in the App Store, but I've been using it for the last couple of years now. I didn't think I would use it. I'm like old school. I’ a -have my index cards- kind of person. And since I use my phone so much for everything anymore, I found the index cards are kind of annoying. And it's hard for me to find stuff. I would suggest getting this app if you love to cook or anything because it organizes your recipes so nicely. This is the third in the How To Build Your Own Website series. We went over WordPress.org. We went over WordPress.com. And today we are going over Squarespace. I have actually used all three at different times in my life. I'm getting tempted to go back to Squarespace. I already built my whole website, my current one, on WordPress.org. Because I'm so picky and I've been doing this so long, building websites for people, I have a hard time handing it off to someone else. Right now, I'm just trying to focus on the content for this podcast, and helping people organize their business systems and their technology and stuff. So I don't wanna get bogged down by redoing my website. But I actually really love Squarespace and the idea of Squarespace. In my opinion, if you are just getting started... You haven't used WordPress.org before. You aren't used to that kind of system. And you're not a super techy person. Like you really do not like the idea of digging into the CSS and possibly HTML and everything of your website to make it exactly how you want it... I would suggest to really give Squarespace a shot. This might be kind of a long episode. There’s a lot to go over. I'm gonna try and dig into it as much as possible. So if you go over these three episodes, you can really get an idea, and probably figure out which one you wanna go with. Squarespace is a really good one to use if you don't wanna hire it out. You just don't have the funds to have someone else build your website, but you don't really wanna learn a whole lot about technology. I'm going to break down Squarespace here into a bunch of different sections so we can just go over one section at a time to see how it works. We're going to go over an easy to use, super, super simple to use, and inexpensive transcription service for if you want anything transcribed. I'm talking about rev.com. Some of you may have heard of it. Some of you may not have heard of it. But I'm going to talk all about it and how you can use it and how much it costs, etc. First, an interesting little fact about me. I used to work for a closed captioning service. Long, long time ago, it seems like forever, I wanted to be an actress. So I moved to LA. Getting a job waiting tables is actually really difficult in LA. If you can do it, you can make really good money, but it's actually kind of difficult. One of the jobs I had was working for a closed captioning service. I wasn't the person that did the closed captioning live, because I am not that fast of a typist, but I'm really good at timing. Even though I wasn't the best typist in the world, I did really good at the closed captioning stuff. I thought when I wanted to transcribe things like my podcast or videos that I've made or any of that stuff, I'll just do it myself and it'll be really easy. It'll just be like when I used to work at the closed captioning place. It is not easy, and it takes a lot of time. Unless you are a super duper fast typist. Typing wasn't required when I was in school, so I never learned how to type without looking at the keyboard. Sometimes I can type well just because I've been doing it so long since now we work on computers. But trust me when I say that unless you are a super fast, accurate typist, one thing you are not going to want to do is type any of your own transcriptions. Any of your own closed captions, if you are doing them for videos or anything. This is not something you want to do for yourself. This is the first thing you want to outsource. This is the first thing I outsourced, it is super easy to do, and it's really not that expensive when you think about how much you're spending compared to how much time it would take you to do your own transcriptions for anything you're doing. Last week we went over WordPress.org, so this week we are going to compare WordPress.org to WordPress.com. Yeah, there's a big difference. WordPress dot org AND WordPress dot com. They are 2 completely different beasts. Well, not completely different. WordPress dot com is owned by the people who started WordPress dot org. But WordPress dot org is an open-source software that anyone can take and make work however they want. While WordPress dot com is a software-as-a-service company that is very similar to other website builders, like Squarespace, Wix, Weebly, etc. The reason I'm doing this episode is because a lot of people mix them up. I've had people tell me before that they're already on WordPress, but what I'm saying doesn't make much sense to what they're looking at. Then I take a look at their site and it's like, "Well, you're on WordPress.com, which is different than WordPress.org." It also makes a big difference in how your website works with your business, so you want to make sure you make the right choice. To make the right choice, you need to know all your options. Today, I am going to tell you how I use my Dropbox account on my phone to save me time and headaches. Welcome to another Tech Tip Tuesday. I'm going to go over how I use my Dropbox account on my phone to save me a lot of time and headaches. I actually have my phone in front of me, so hopefully, I won't do the thing where I'm looking at my phone and not talking to the microphone. I will do my best on this one, but I want to make sure I go over everything. It actually should be pretty quick, but there are a few things that seriously have been amazing and have totally saved my butt. I'm going to go over the few things that I've got on here. It looks like I've got one, two, three, four, five to go over, and these should all be available in the free version. I happen to have the pro version. One step up from free version. Where you pay 10 bucks a month. It is awesome and amazing. You get a ton of storage space that I haven't even come closing to using yet. But all these things should be available in the free version. One of the first things I do is… ***NOTE*** - Don’t know how important it is to you, but about half way through the episode I mentioned that I have 4 albums that pop up when I hit “Starred.” I meant folders. Not albums. Just in case it was a bit confusing. I didn’t even catch it until I was writing the notes. The next few Thursday episodes are going to be all about How to Choose the Best DIY Website Builder to build your website yourself. And today's episode is all about wordpress.org. For the next three Thursday episodes, I'm going to be going over the three kind of options that are out there. The best options that are out there for building your own website. This week we're going over wordpress.org. Next week I'm going to compare wordpress.org to wordpress.com. They get confused sometimes, so we'll go over exactly what the differences are and which one you'd rather use. And then the week after that I'm going to go over Squarespace. Squarespace is one of my favorite ones to use. Personally, I would say it's basically between wordpress.org and Squarespace. And then if you listen to the three episodes, you'll understand the differences and hopefully be able to choose which one is best for you. I decided to do this series on the How to Choose the Best DIY Website Builder because a lot of people, when they’re first starting a business, are on a budget. They need something that is free or almost free to get the things going. WordPress.org is one of the better ones to use. This is one you have more control over, but this is also one that you have to not be afraid of technology and realize that you’re going to get your hands a little dirty as far learning technology. It’s not going to be what they call a WYSIWYG. A what-you-see-is-what-you-get when you go to design it. You have to be open to learning technology.I’m just going to go over a few things that you want to do. This episode is sponsored by your FREE Blog Post SEO Checklist. We're going to go over an easy to use and free screen recording software. If you've been looking for a solution to record your computer screen without paying a fortune for a screen recording software, you are going to love this episode. I am super excited about this one. It may sound silly but I have been looking for a screen recording software that I could use on my PC. Because I have Macs and PCs. Because I'm weird that way. I use them for different things but that's neither here nor there. For my Mac I can just use QuickTime to record my screen. That’s never been a big deal. It would be nicer to have a nicer version of it, but it works great if I need to record my screen. I don't have anything for my PC without having to spend a fortune. Drives me crazy. I don't want to spend a ton of money just to record my screen. There is actually a software that I really like, if you are looking for something to not only record your screen but do video editing and you have a PC. I'll do another podcast about that later. Just to let you know it's called Filmora by Wondershare. But it still costs $60 for a lifetime access to it. This one that I'm going to tell you about is totally, totally free. So, if you're just looking for something to record your screen. Let's get into it. This episode is sponsored by your Loom Tutorial download. Part of my business is building websites for people. I get asked over and over again, do I really need a website for my business? The short answer is yes, you need a website. It doesn't even need to be something spectacular, but you do need a website for your business. And I'm going to spend this podcast telling you the reasons why you need a website for your business. In a future podcast, though, I think I will go over what you want to have on your website. The more important things to have on your website. But right now, this is just to convince you yes, you do need a website for your business. It's not that hard. They're actually pretty easy to make up nowadays. But let's just get into it, and go over the reasons why need one. This episode is sponsored by your FREE Blog Post SEO Checklist. Does the term SEO make you want to scream? Today's episode is all about Google Keep and the Notes app that comes with IOS. Now the reason I'm going over both of these and comparing them is because I'm actually trying to decide which one I want to use. There are lots of other notes apps out there. One of the big ones is Evernote. So if you're already using something like Evernote, this probably isn't even worth it for you. But the reason I'm going over Google Keep and Notes app is because these are both free. They're both basic but they both do a lot. I know Evernote has a free version. I've never really gotten into Evernote. I've kind of gotten option paralysis, so I think I would need to take a full on course on how to use Evernote. I've tried using it but then I just like... ooh... I totally get overwhelmed. I just want something basic for keeping notes on. I've been trying to use Google Keep, but I'm so used to using the Notes app that it's automatic for me to use the Notes app. I'm trying to use Google Keep to see if I actually like it better. But let's just go over what the functions are of each one. And then we'll go over and see which one probably would work better for you. Both of them you can take notes. Both of them sync up. As you listen to the podcast, you will hear what the differences are and how they are similar. As well as the pros and cons of each. This episode is sponsored by your FREE MailChimp Email Marketing How-to. If you have a business, you know you need an email list. But, what if you're just starting out, and your budget is close to zero. Or, maybe your budget is actually zero when it comes to using an email service provider right now. What are you gonna do? In this free gift that I have created for you, it's called MailChimp Email Marketing How-to. I show you how to use MailChimp's free service. So, MailChimp lets you use their service for free, with a few limitations for up to 2000 people on your list. And that sounds great. But, here's the problem with that. The way they have it setup, it's not intuitive on how to use their free service if you have more than one thing that you're giving away. So, basically you create these lists. But it's only good for one thing that you're giving away. If you go to give something else away, then it changes the first thing. Does that make sense? Well, anyway, you're gonna grab this free gift. Let's say to get people on your email list, you have two to three different freebies that you're trying to give away. But to set up to the three lists, it's a bit tricky.
