When AI Gets Creepy: A Personal Account of Phantom Copying and Digital Disturbance

Yesterday, something eerie happened. When AI Gets Creepy: A Personal Account of Phantom Copying and Digital Disturbance By Renaldo C. McKenzie | The Neoliberal Post renaldocmckenzie.com.I was working with my AI assistant, the ever-faithful digital companion I rely on for everything from research to editing, when I noticed something strange—unnerving, even. I hadn't copied any text, yet my words were being highlighted and duplicated without my instruction. After I typed a request, the screen turned stark white, as if buffering reality. Then, nearly half a minute later, the AI's results appeared—only to flash and highlight themselves, as though someone else was remotely copying them. It felt like someone—or something—was watching. Not reading—replicating. Not responding—rewriting my own commands in real time. My first thought? Had the AI been hacked? Was this the digital equivalent of a haunted house? The Ghost in the Machine: What I Feared Initially, I assumed it was just a glitch. Maybe a slow internet connection, maybe some lag in rendering the results. But when the text consistently highlighted itself, again and again, without input, I knew this was something different. It was as if an invisible hand hovered over my keyboard, following every keystroke, mimicking every move. Had AI systems recently come under attack? Had someone found a way to infiltrate the very tools we've come to trust so intimately with our information? I began to worry: Was someone spying through the AI interface? Could this be a case of prompt injection or malware manipulation? Is the AI platform or browser I use compromised? These are not idle questions in our current digital age, where artificial intelligence is deeply woven into our productivity, creativity, and even our private thoughts. Known Vulnerabilities and Real Risks While no widespread AI cyberattacks were reported at the time of this writing, several vulnerabilities have been noted by security experts—most notably “prompt injection” attacks. These involve sneaky, hidden commands that trick AI into leaking or performing tasks unintended by the user. In tandem with that, clipboard managers, browser extensions, or even compromised input tools can behave strangely—duplicating, highlighting, or echoing actions without your consent. But how are we, everyday users and creators, supposed to tell the difference between a bug and a breach? What You Can Do to Protect Yourself If you're reading this and have noticed your AI behaving oddly—listen to that instinct. Here are a few simple yet vital steps you can take: Disable suspicious browser extensions – One bad actor can hijack your experience. Scan your device for malware or clipboard hijackers – Tools that track your copy/paste can lead to major breaches. Use trusted and updated platforms only – AI tools in beta or sketchy sites can be vectors for attacks. Report the behavior – Let the platform's support team know. You might not be the only one. Be cautious with sensitive data – Never enter private passwords, financial information, or client data into an AI platform without absolute trust in its security. Final Thoughts: Don't Dismiss the Glitch What began as a minor annoyance ended as a wake-up call. As we rely more on AI to do everything from writing to decision-making, the potential for digital vulnerabilities grows. This isn't to breed paranoia—but to encourage preparedness. Our digital assistants may seem neutral, obedient, almost invisible. But behind the screen is a web of code, vulnerable to bad actors, software errors, and unseen surveillance. Stay alert. Ask questions. Don't let the ghost in your machine go unchallenged. Because the future is watching—but so should we. The momentum behind diversity, equity, and inclusion (DE&I) came to an abrupt halt at the start of the year. DE&I initiatives once championed as a force for workplace equity and growth are now being condemned, sidelined, and stripped of their visibility—at least until political winds shift again. But at what cost?We invited Margaret Spence, an expert and advocate for transformative and inclusive change, to discuss the cost of these reduced investments and what organizations can do to respond. Margaret motivates leaders to not focus on the term “DE&I,” but on what inclusion truly means for a culture, a workplace, and our collective future. Companies must shift from performative actions to unshakable and deeply embedded commitments that are designed to withstand political and economic turbulence.Margaret reminds us that the next generation deserves better than what we are willing to give it today. It is up to all of us—companies, employees, and communities—to ensure that the workplaces of tomorrow do not regress but instead rise to meet the promise of true inclusion. The question is not whether DE&I will survive, but whether we are willing to fight for the future it represents.Listen for key insights on:Shifting language away from traditional DEI termsHow individuals—and not just corporations—can advance inclusionThe threat of AI to workplace equity Resources + Links:Margaret Spence's LinkedInMargaret Spence on Episode 165 of Purpose 360Margaret Spence's WebsiteNew York Times: These Words Are Disappearing in the New Trump Administration (00:00) - Welcome to Purpose 360 (00:13) - Margaret Spence on DEI (02:40) - Margaret's Background (04:31) - Her Purpose (05:55) - Passion, Purpose, and Value (07:30) - Challenges in Diversity (10:48) - Fad with Shallow Roots (12:13) - Current Landscape (14:18) - Major Impacts (15:24) - 25% (17:22) - NYT Report (19:34) - What Language to Use (23:22) - What You Can Do (24:53) - Those Standing Up (26:42) - Dismantling Contracts (27:16) - Last Thoughts (30:46) - Wrap Up

How do you turn decades of expertise into a scalable thought leadership business? Ruth King, known as the Profit & Wealth Guru, shares her journey from one-on-one financial coaching to becoming a best-selling author and AI innovator. She began by helping small businesses demystify their financial statements, but quickly realized her reach was limited. Writing books became the answer. Her first book, "The Ugly Truth about Small Business: 50 (Never-Saw-It-Coming) Things That Can Go Wrong...and What You Can Do about It," featured lessons from 50 entrepreneurs, offering readers practical insights into navigating difficult challenges.. It struck a chord, leading to a series of books that continue to impact readers globally. Publishing was just the start. Ruth took her ideas to a wider audience by leveraging TV, radio, newsletters, and now podcasts. Weekly newsletters since the '90s have built her credibility, while speaking engagements and media appearances have kept her message evergreen. Her approach is simple: stories over statistics. Sharing real-life examples from her clients makes complex financial principles relatable and memorable, ensuring her audience stays engaged. As technology advanced, Ruth embraced AI to scale her impact. Recognizing its potential during a Mastermind session, she and her team developed a groundbreaking AI tool to simplify and analyze messy small business balance sheets. Rooted in her decades of expertise, this tool standardizes processes and delivers insights at scale—no Zoom required. It's a game-changer for small businesses seeking clarity and growth. For Ruth, it's not just about the numbers; it's about empowering entrepreneurs to grow profitably, build wealth, and create lasting success. Three Key Takeaways: • Stories Simplify Complexity: Ruth King's success lies in using real-life client stories to make financial principles accessible and memorable, demonstrating the power of storytelling in thought leadership. • Scaling Expertise Through AI: By embedding her decades of knowledge into an AI tool, Ruth has transformed her expertise into a scalable solution that helps small businesses make sense of their financials without needing her direct involvement. • Long-Term PR is Essential: Thought leadership isn't a one-and-done effort. Ruth's ongoing use of newsletters, speaking engagements, and media appearances ensures her message remains relevant and her audience continues to grow. Ruth understands that to have maximum impact you have to be able to go to scale.  If you want to learn more about "Scaling You" check out this video by Leveraging Thought Leadership CEO Peter Winick.

The 5 Types of People Who Can Ruin Your Life Series: Unmasking the Cruel Con ArtistIn the second episode of the "5 Types of People Who Can Ruin Your Life" series, Bill and Megan focus on one of the most challenging and dangerous high conflict personality types: those with antisocial personality traits, also known as cruel con artists. They explore what defines this personality type, how to identify the red flags, and most importantly, what you can do to protect yourself from their manipulative tactics.Bill and Megan start by discussing the key characteristics of people with antisocial personality traits, including their lack of empathy, remorse, and their tendency to lie and deceive without hesitation. They note that while not all individuals with antisocial traits are violent criminals, many engage in secretive behaviors that can be extremely harmful to those close to them. One of the main challenges with those who have antisocial personality traits is their ability to charm and manipulate others. Bill and Megan emphasize the importance of looking beyond surface-level charm and conducting thorough background checks when entering into any significant relationship, whether personal or professional. They also discuss the confusion and self-doubt that often arise when dealing with someone who has antisocial personality traits. Megan shares a personal experience of feeling confused and questioning her own perceptions when interacting with someone who exhibited these traits.Questions we answer in this episode:What are the key characteristics of someone with antisocial personality traits? How can you identify if someone you know might have antisocial personality traits? What are some common manipulative tactics used by people with antisocial personality traits? How can you protect yourself from being conned or harmed by someone with antisocial personality traits? What should you do if you suspect you're in a relationship with someone who has antisocial personality traits?Key Takeaways:People with antisocial personality traits lack empathy, remorse, and frequently lie and deceive others.Charm and manipulation are common traits, making it essential to look beyond surface-level impressions. Background checks and seeking input from others who know the person are crucial when entering significant relationships.Trust your gut feelings if something seems "off" or too good to be true.Prioritize self-protection and set clear boundaries when dealing with individuals suspected of having antisocial personality traits. This episode provides invaluable insights into the complex and often dangerous world of those with antisocial personality traits. As part of the "5 Types of People Who Can Ruin Your Life" series, it helps listeners understand the unique challenges posed by this specific high conflict personality type. By recognizing the red flags, common manipulative tactics, and the importance of self-protection, listeners will be better equipped to navigate relationships with these individuals. Bill and Megan's expertise and practical advice make this a must-listen for anyone looking to safeguard themselves and their loved ones from the devastating impact of cruel con artists.Links & Other NotesBOOKS5 Types of People Who Can Ruin Your LifeDating RadarHigh Conflict People in Legal DisputesIt's All Your Fault!Managing High Conflict People in CourtCOURSESHandling Family Law Cases Involving Antisocial High Conflict PeopleCONSULTATIONSConsultation with Bill or MeganARTICLESLiving with High-Conflict People: Do's and Don'ts for Living with an Antisocial High Conflict PeopleThe Sociopath: Antisocial High Conflict PeopleSociopaths and Their DeceptionsManipulators in Plain Sight: Spotting Antisocial Personality DisorderOUR WEBSITE: https://www.highconflictinstitute.com/Submit a Question for Bill and MeganAll of our books can be found in our online store or anywhere books are sold, including as e-books.You can also find these show notes at our site as well.Note: We are not diagnosing anyone in our discussions, merely discussing patterns of behavior. Dear Songwriter...

Dear Songwriter...

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 13, 2024 9:26

Intro:I received the first mix for my new song, from a Mixing Engineer the other day.And after doing this for almost two decades now, I have a much better understanding of what to listen for in a first mix.But that wasn't always the case…Back in 2009, I received the first draft of my band's first album, and thought to myself…“I think this sounds good?”It was a weird feeling…I felt like I should have said more, but I just didn't know what I didn't know. And I didn't know how to communicate any thoughts that I did have.It wasn't until I racked up these experiences that I realized…I lacked important knowledge and skillsets to listen, analyze, and communicate. So I'm going to break down the lessons I've learned, by sharing the three main elements I listen for, in a first mix…#1 - volume level of the vocalsSongwriters and singers, myself included, have a tendency to want loud, (or at least “louder”) vocals. It's only natural - you work hard on writing meaningful lyrics; you want those words to come through, you want people to relate to the message of your song. But proceed with caution…Because the relationship of vocals to instrumentals in a mix, is like salad dressing to greens. If your dressing simply sits on top of your salad, when you take that first bite, you may only taste the dressing…Instead of tasting the combination of dressing with greens that makes a salad delicious. And your vocals are no different. So when I get that first mix back, I pay special, close attention to this relationship between vocals and instrumental -AKA are the vocals “sitting on top of” the instrumental? Or are they blended in?And you'll see my note in the below email I sent to my mixing engineer, that I felt that the vocals were a little “hot” (“loud”)…AKA I felt like the blend I was looking for, wasn't there yet.#2 - volume level and presence of the kick drum, snare drum, and basslineA conventional rhythm section is made up of the drums and bass. And more specifically, the kick drum and snare drum, or whatever sounds are being used to represent that, provide the pulse. So the relationship between the kick drum, snare, and bass, is crucial. If those parts aren't working with each other…(for example, if one of those pieces is drowning out the other two)…Then that may need to be addressed.#3 - energy level of key transitionsSongs are made up of “big moments”.And how you transition into and out of those moments, is crucial. Now, it's important to note that these transitions and “big moments”, and how they work with each other, should be addressed during the actual songwriting process. You can't fix a songwriting issue with a production or mixing solution, after all. However, it's important that the mixing engineer enhance, and outline those transitions. So you'll see in the below email, I include a note about the second chorus “losing energy”.This will be an important adjustment - as there is a feeling of energy building in that section that I want the listeners to feel. What You Can Do with this:There are other elements to listen for when you get that first mix back from your producer/engineer.But these are the three I would suggest honing in on, at the very least.Especially if you are new to this experience.I would encourage you to practice “active listening”, not only to your songs, but to other artists' tunes.Start to pay attention to these relationships between vocals and instrumentals, and start to identify “big moments” in these songs. Conclusion:As always, I hope you found value from this episode.Happy Writing,ConnorBook a free call - http://www.connorfrost.com/startcall

Do we all have equal access to the benefits of longevity science? Undoubtedly not, although many of the proven interventions are more accessible than some people realize. "The metabolic benefits of appropriate nutrition, appropriate sleep, appropriate exercise, and also stress and a sense of purpose can outweigh even the very expensive interventions," says Dr. Robert Lufkin, one of the longevity experts featured in a new documentary series exploring ways we can live longer and better. Lufkin, the author of Lies I Taught in Medical School: How Conventional Medicine Is Making You Sicker and What You Can Do to Save Your Own Life, adds: "these are accessible to everyone and something we can all start doing now," with "proven effects on our longevity." The democratization of health care is at the core of Reversed: The Race for Longevity, which dives into the science and personal stories behind extending healthspan. Hosted by Nick Engerer the series aims to make longevity accessible to all - not just the wealthy.
