NVR Podcast #3 - Harmonising or Reconciliation? Peter Jakob & Rachael Aylmer
Hello and welcome to PartnershipProject's first Parent Podcast. This year we are focusing on Parental Presence in the form of monthly podcasts and blog posts. These voices will be from current or past parents who have been referred to PartnershipProjects via a local authority or agency to work with our accredited NVR practitioners. Here, they are permitting us to host their stories, their struggles and successes in their own words, using this platform to share their growth and continued practice of the approach. We hope that each podcast highlights the unique differences in which NVR can support change in family settings. This first podcast introduces Sarah an SGO who has been working with our accredited NVR practitioner Dr Tony Meehan https://www.partnershipprojectsuk.com/people/tony-meehan/ Tony has worked with Sarah for 18 months and utilised the NVR principles to support Sarah with her nonverbal autistic grandson, Harley. A special edition by Peter Jakob and Joanne Buchmüller, writer and Specialist Family and Systemic Psychotherapist in which they discuss the dilemmas in how NVR can be used to support parents and their children with Neurodivergence. They highlight how the exploration of parental erasure and not mattering are the starting points and that resistance methods such as announcements are secondary ways in which parents raise presence, hear their own voice and sense of agency. They caution on the dangers of focusing solely on the methods as a potential to further parental erasure. They also share other important shifts from the classical ideas and how to 'pare back' and simplify methods so that they can be used across children's whole development. Shila Desai and Peter Jakob discuss some additions to Child focused Practices in NVR . Unmet needs were categorised in four ways which included the need to belong, to feel safe and secure, the need for autonomy with a sense of accomplishment and fourth the need for a coherent and benign narrative of worth and being loved. This podcast throws up a fifth need which is the 'Need for Justice' and how NVR has ignored this 'big elephant' in the room. How do we help adults to initiate justice seeking for their young person and to hold an accountability for their own past failures by using methods such as self announcements whilst continuing to show commitment and responsibility for the future. Enjoy. Please note there is an abrupt ending at the end of this episode and Peter was unable to say goodbye.PartnershipProjects is the UK's leading NVR (Non-Violent Resistance) Training provider for professionals and parent coaching. Our professional Podcasts are hosted by highly qualified trainers and practitioners, including Shila Desai, Jill Lubienski, Dr Peter Jakob, Rachael Aylmer, and influential guests. In this episode Jill Lubienski and Dr Peter Jakob discuss the wider applications of NVR, focusing on areas of practice not originally considered within the NVR family approach developed by Haim Omer. Discussion includes how NVR could be used for example in situations where a young person refuses to comply with diabetic medication; in communities where there is gang-related violence; how practitioners might utilise imaginary methods with siblings to resist escalation; and NVR practices in wider systemic contexts around the family. Peter talks about his own work on 'Vectors of Resistance' and considers how practitioners can raise their presence and accountability and resist collusion with oppressive systems, using NVR methods to challenge parent blaming practices. Jill and Peter encourage practitioners to speak freely about the more non-traditional edges of NVR practice they are involved in and invite questions on these new areas for future consideration and discussion.PartnershipProjects is the UK's leading NVR (Non-Violent Resistance) Training provider for professionals and parent coaching. Our professional Podcasts are hosted by highly qualified trainers and practitioners, including Shila Desai, Jill Lubienski, Dr Peter Jakob, Rachael Aylmer, and influential guests. In light of recent events (war) taking our focus, we felt strongly to reflect on what builds peace. This is an emotional piece that we were compelled to speak about. With Shila Desai & Peter Jakob.
In this episode Shila Desai speaks to Vasiliki Loumpa- a Family and Systemic Psychotherapist/ NVR Accredited Practitioner about how she uses NVR and its adaptations in working with young people's mental health. We explore how de-escalation in symptoms is possible and how practitioners create space to re-connect with for parents unheard needs.Don't forget to check the PartnershipProjects Website for our 1 day conference on 12th September and also new dates for our training courses from Autumn 2023.
In this podcast, Shila Desai and Peter Jakob explore the difficult impact of situational mutism, social withdrawal and shutdown faced by parents and carers when young people are no longer engaging with the world. The conversation explores the needs of young people and their withdrawal being situated within an attempt to find a solution. Peter and Shila explore how resistance by parents and a caring community can bring back life energy, the ability to persevere and to invite dialogue again. Some personal anecdotes are shared which we hope you enjoy.Don't forget to click on the link for more details about our latest 1-day conference in Birmingham on 12th September 2023.https://www.partnershipprojectsuk.com/project/past-present-and-future-of-nvr-in-the-uk-and-beyond/
In this podcast, Jill Lubienski and Peter Jakob consider the position of women and NVR. Many of our clients are women in situations of distress, who are left alone to cope in often dangerous family situations and then frequently blamed by agencies and others for not being 'good enough' parents. Peter and Jill explore NVR's lack of consideration as a whole of issues of gender and violence. They discuss how this lack of a feminist sensibility has left women exposed and their struggles underappreciated and invalidated when the lens of gender is not taken into account in the NVR work. Peter and Jill focus on amplifying those parts of the client which want to resist socially prescribed and unhelpful gender-based roles and beliefs and how the creative use of supporters may facilitate courageous acts of redefinition, one small step at a time.
In this episode, Jill Lubienski and Peter Jakob discuss possibilities for how to keep going in tough times. Peter and Jill elaborate on a metaphor of climbing a mountain - how our work in NVR and within the systems in which we are located, can be akin to such an experience, where we have to find ways of coping in unfamiliar locations and in inclement weather, employing various resources and survival skills which we may have needed in the past, but forgotten. Jill and Peter discuss their ideas of what helps us to reignite our energy to keep going. What puts us in touch with our resources and creativity? How and when NVR can be a map to help navigate this treacherous terrain? What sort of support from others can help keep us from falling into despair and unhelpful blaming patterns? Importantly, what can ultimately make our work sweeter?
Peter Jakob introduces Shila Desai and together they discuss the idea of how to cultivate stillness in the demands and uncertainties that families and practitioners face. The idea of a First Aid Still Box is explored and how both physical supplies and mentalising practices can be included in such a box to create a halt before taking action.
Peter Jakob and Jill Lubienski take inspiration from Martin Luther King Jr. in exploring the theme of connecting heart and mind and taking action in an NVR frame.

Tony Meehan and Rachael Aylmer talk about how schools can adopt a new approach to behaviours in school, using New Authority. We referenced a book by Paul Dix - When the Adults Change Everything ChangesWe referenced a YouTube clip - Dads Patrol (in the US) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OdPaqt6RY_QWe referenced Toby Newton - Headteacher in a Hong Kong school - ICHK and a exert of the behaviour policy in his school."Our conviction as a school is that for 95% of the time and for 95% of the students, deviations from the behaviour for learning can be resolved through informal conversation and counselling. Research and our own experience suggest that timely, sympathetic and constructive intervention is most effective, and can usually obviate the need for any formal procedures to be put in place. Implicit in this is the knowledge that oftentimes, behavioural conduct is the only voice students have to express themselves. Our role as teachers is to provide students with alternative ways in which to do this successfully. As teachers, we should be mindful of the fact that we are setting up a significant part of our student's worlds and that this needs to be done with the guidance, patience and understanding."Behaviour for learning policy, ICHK international school Hong Kong,Headteacher: Toby Newton
