When her teenage daughter tried to speak one day, she had no voice and it lasted for almost a year, with trauma-induced mutism. Can you imagine what that would be like to live with, as a parent? When I met Rebecca I felt a connection, perhaps it was her smile or shared passions or rising above adversity after divorce or both having daughters. Perhaps is was a combination of all of it. One thing really stood out. Rebecca's courage to speak openly and authentically about the adversity that crossed her path in life, how she dealt with it and found the silver linings and is now, a master communicator. This shines through in the work Rebecca does, the way she speaks and shows up in the world and of course as a guest on this Podcast. We talk about morning rituals, music and the art of communication which, combined build connection. And we need more of that in this crazy busy world we live in. 06Selective Mutism is a complex childhood anxiety disorder characterized by a child's inability to speak in certain social situations, such as at school or in the community, despite being able to speak comfortably in more familiar settings, like at home with family. This condition transcends the idea of mere shyness or a wilful refusal to speak; it is deeply rooted in extreme social anxiety.

Are Autism and Asexuality linked? What is the difference between aromanticism and asexuality? What does asexuality look like in a relationship? PJ Âû (@pj_au_) is a US-based Autism advocate in modeling, acting and singing. Not only a multi-award-winning individual, PJ volunteers her time to support autistic people in her community to locate the support and help that they need. Although not her main focus, asexuality is part of who she is and relishes in the opportunity to provide representation for the ACE community. PJ's Links - https://linktr.ee/pj_a // My Links - https://linktr.ee/thomashenleyUK In this episode of the Thoughty Auti Podcast, Thomas Henley talks to PJ all about asexuality and its range of subgroups of individuals within the ACE spectrum; they also touch on the link between Autism and asexuality, and bond over the difficulties and realities of dating as a member of the ACE community. They start the conversation by bonding over their difficulties with Speech Apraxia and 'Selective' Mutism and how this encouraged PJ to focus more on modeling than her acting career. Todd from Bojack Horseman was mentioned multiple times, due to the representation his character gave the community as a male, Hispanic and asexual individual. PJ painfully tries to describe to Thomas the different sub-categories of Asexuality and jargon, which sparked up a conversation about the barriers to entry for learning about new topics like Autism. Thomas introduces his theories on why Autistic people are more likely to be asexual, such as sensory differences and indirect communication... but they both agreed that everyone's situation and the meaning don't require explanation to be valid, however interesting to delve into. Pj quoted over 50% of Autistic people identifying as on the ACE spectrum, and anywhere north of 70% for landing anywhere within the LGBTQA+ community. PJ opens up about her Hollywood'esque experience of meeting her now husband; after talking online and following each other's Cold Play Tumblr accounts for years they took a leap of faith and decided to give their relationship a go. They are a happily married s*x-repulsed Asexual couple. They end up talking about the common criticisms, stereotypes and comments asexuals have to deal with online and within interpersonal relationships. Agreeing that asexuality is a useful label, NOT something to do with garnering attention or having a libido, and something extremely useful to label yourself as when navigating the tumultuous world of dating! Human evolution is incredible. We come out of the womb knowing that our greatest chance of survival is to attach to a primary caretaker who will keep us safe. And that innate wisdom is what motivates children to seek closeness and connection to their secure base. When children suffer from an anxiety disorder the threat detector in their brain is on overdrive and more and more they rely on their parents to protect and soothe them. And while parents have the best intentions, this interpersonal dance can actually serve to increase the severity and frequency of anxiety in children. Dr. Eli Lebowitz of the Yale Child Study Center has pioneered a new treatment that interrupts that dance! By altering the way parents respond to their child when they are in distress, rather than fueling the flames of anxiety, parents are able to lessen the symptoms, all without asking their child to change his or her behavior in any way. SPACE has been a game changer in my private practice and I was delighted when Dr. Lebowitz agreed to come on the podcast to discuss the incredible work he is doing and the amazing results they are seeing. If you are interested in learning more about the work that Upshur Bren Psychology Group is doing to treat child anxiety and OCD with SPACE, go to upshurbren.com/space.

Valikuline mutism on ärevushäire, mida iseloomustab võimetus teatud olukordades verbaalselt suhelda ehk rääkida. Eesmärgiks on luua kaasahaarav ja mõtlemapanev arutelu, mille käigus jõutakse võimalusteni, kuidas lapsevanem, õpetaja, tugispetsialistid, ringijuhid saavad lapse toetamiseks koostööd teha. Arutelujuht: Kadi Jaanisoo-Kuld Arutelus osalejad: Terje Sild (lapsevanem), Gerli Mikk (eripedagoog), Katri-Evelin Kalaus (kliiniline psühholoog), Sirli Kivisaar (mänguterapeut), Lea Kutsar (kogemuse jagaja) Arutelu korraldaja: Paide Hillar Hanssoo põhikool

Do you struggle to get your words out? Feel yourself freeze when someone speaks to you? Do your words seem to get stuck in your throat? In this fascinating episode, we explore the relationship between social anxiety and selective mutism - a severe response to anxiety. We answer that dreaded question “why don’t you talk?” And you’ll discover how your behaviour might be helping to keep someone ‘stuck’ in their cycle of silence and fear -including how praise may actually reduce the likelihood of someone speaking up again. You’ll also hear about why ‘shy’ isn’t a helpful word to use to describe quieter children. You’ll learn about other ways that this fear response can show up that you might not have considered, and how you should respond if a child is using ‘silly talk’, animal noises, or a voice that isn’t their own - and why they might be doing this. Chelsea also demonstrates how very important it is to take a comfort zone stretch approach to overcoming selective mutism and anxiety as she explains what helped her to move through selective mutism to becoming a podcast host.
